DIRECTOR [email protected] Lisa Weesner COORDINATOR [email protected] Sunday, February 15, 2015 | The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” 1 COR. 10:1 Ashes Ashes, an ancient Jewish sign of penitence, begin the season of Lent this coming Wednesday. During Mass on Ash Wednesday, the faithful come forward to have ashes rubbed on their foreheads in the sign of the cross. The ashes come from the burned palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. The priest, deacon or other minister will say one of two formulas: “Turn away form sin and be faithful to the Gospel” or “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Ashes, black and gritty, remind us of the somber character of Lent. They symbolize the darkness in our lives which must be confronted and repented. They also remind us that just as something that has burned up is gone, what we have and who we are on this earth are not permanent. There is an urgency in the Lord calling us to conversion. Worn publicly, ashes remind us that we call each other to live the Gospel. Since Lent is a time of personal and communal conversion, it is an especially fitting time to cut back on life’s “extras.” We must remember that the purpose of Lent is not solely to give up things. It is to turn our lives from what does not really satisfy and to fill ourselves with what the Lord wants us to have. Even a look at advertising on television and other media proves the point: our culture promises fulfillment through material things. Finding something to do without can remind us that our heart’s desire can be filled only by God. May this coming Lent be a time of growth, renewal and conversion for all of us! Father David Parish Library I wish to thank all those who have offered to donate books to our up and coming Parish Library. At the present time, we will not be able to accept any books as there is a sufficient supply of reading materials that will fill the limited space we have. The library will be open sometime this spring. It will be a great addition to the educational aspect of parish life. Father David Page 2 | February 15, 2015 | The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pilgrimage to Knock, Ireland Dear Parishioners, I will be making a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland the first week in March. There I will be celebrating Mass at the Chapel of the Apparitions. I invite any parishioners who would like me to have their prayers of petition offered during the Mass to write them in the space below. You may then put the intentions in an envelope and I will make sure to mention them during the private Mass I will be celebrating. If you prefer to have your petitions kept confidential, indicate on the envelope “Confidential.” The envelope will then not be opened, but the petitions inside will be brought to our Blessed Mother. I will ask our Blessed Mother under the title of Our Lady of Knock to bring your petitions to our Lord. You may put the envelope in the collection basket with “Fr. David – Knock Pilgrimage” written on the front. You may also drop the envelope off at the Ministry Center or mail it to me. I would like to have the petitions in my possession by Monday, February 23, at the latest. While I am there, all of you will be remembered at Mass and in my prayers. I ask for your prayers as well. Thank you. Sincerely, Father David The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | February 15, 2015 | Page 3 COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE BISHOP Collection for Central & Eastern Europe Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Ash Wednesday, February 18, our diocese will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. The collection offers a way for Catholics in the United States to stand in solidarity with those who experience the ongoing effects of living under difficult circumstances across the globe. Grants funded by this collection support pastoral projects, scholarships, and Catholic organizations working in areas formerly under Soviet control. The bishops and people of these regions still face enormous challenges in restoring church structures and in rebuilding the cultural and spiritual life of the community, tasks that are often complicated by a lack of religious freedom. One funded group, a Czech association for women and children and the protection of unborn life (Obcanske sdruzeni ONZ—pomoc a poradenstvi pro zeny a divky), has worked for 23 years to reduce the rate of abortions in the Czech Republic. When the association opened its doors in 1990 after the Velvet Revolution, half of all pregnancies in the country ended in abortion. Through innovative counseling and support programs at six regional centers for women in difficult situations, the association has played a major role in reducing the abortion rate from 50 percent down to 20 percent. The centers work to protect the human dignity of both mothers and children, advocating for the right to life of the unborn. Recently, the association experienced a crisis when the Czech government withdrew operational support for its programs. The Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe provided a critical bridge grant that allowed the association to continue its operations while searching for a permanent funding solution. In 2014, the Czech Bishops’ Conference announced that it would fund the association's operating expenses from its own budget, thereby guaranteeing the future of the association and its crucial work. In order for projects like this one to continue, the collection needs your help. Please be generous. Your donation will continue to restore and build the future of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Thank you and God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop of Joliet Page 4 | February 15, 2015 | The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Administration [ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY Worship ] In today’s second reading, St. Paul urges the Corinthians to “do all for the glory of God.” If we follow that advice in everything we do, we cannot help but be good stewards. The collection amount for the weekend of February 7/8 totaled $18,579.00 Your generosity is most appreciated and needed. Thank you! 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Please Make a Generous Gift-Consider Pledging This weekend at Mass, we are privileged to participate in the diocesan-wide Commitment/In-Pew Weekend for the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). The CMAA is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a pledge and pay it in 10 payments. A significant gift to the CMAA will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget for our Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you prayerfully consider a pledge to the CMAA, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives to you. God extends His mercy to us each day, and you can be a part of “Extending God’s Mercy” to others through the CMAA. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our diocese. But each pledge does make a difference, because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry and services. For those of you who were unable to make a decision about your commitment this weekend, please prayerfully consider doing so online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or by returning a Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelope to the parish next week. If you received a pledge form in the mail, you may return it via mail. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $96,094 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Stewardship Prayer Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise you and we thank you for your great power and your tender, faithful love. Everything we are and everything we have is your gift, and after having created us you have given us into the keeping of your Son, Jesus Christ. Fill our minds with His truth and our hearts with His love, that in His Spirit we may be bonded together into a community of faith, a parish family, a caring people. In the Name and Spirit of Jesus, we commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent, our material gifts as an outward sign of the Treasure we hold in Jesus. According to the Roman Missal, the word "Alleluia" is not sung during liturgical celebrations until the Easter Vigil, which symbolizes our voluntary restraint of praise during the penitential Season of Lent. Most of the music during Masses the weekend of February 14-15 includes the word “Alleluia” in some form or another as it will be the Easter Vigil when we hear it once again. Lent is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This is also made manifest through the music at Sunday worship. One of the overarching themes in this cycle of readings is that of God’s love for us and mercy. We begin each Sunday liturgy by singing the refrain by John Angotti, “Return to God with all your heart. Surrender and be free. With humble hearts we cry to you: have mercy on us, Lord; forgive us our sin, we pray.” The other Latin chant used is “Agnus Dei” (Lamb of God). In singing ecclesial Latin, we impose Italianate pronunciation rules, so the “gn” combination sounds like “ny” as in "canyon", or the Spanish letter ñ (Agnus Dei = ahn-yoos day-ee). There is no Gloria on Sundays during the season of Lent. Lent concludes with the Triduum, which begins with the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. This is one of the liturgical celebrations in which we will next sing the Gloria. Two Solemnities, St. Joseph and The Annunciation of the Lord, fall “Lent is a season of on weekdays during Lent on March 19 penance, reflection, and 25, respectively. Even though it is Lent, the Gloria will still be said on and fasting, which these dates. prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This is also made manifest through the music at Sunday worship.” Our seasonal Responsorial Psalm encapsulates the message well: “With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.” Unlike many weekly Psalm responses in which only several verses are selected from the whole, we experience Psalm 130 in its entirety. The beginning verses point out that when we bring our prayers to God, who would stand if He kept track of all our failings? By trusting in Him more than anything, He shows us His merciful love through redemption for all of our sins. We will use Form A of the Penitential Act (Confiteor) during Lent. Since the text “Lord, have mercy” is not in the prayer directly, the Roman Missal calls for the text to be recited or sung immediately following. We will chant an unaccompanied version intoned by handbells, “Kyrie Eleison” – the only official Greek text of the Mass. The primary role of instruments during Lent and the Triduum is to support the singing of the cantor, choir, and assembly. Therefore, on February 14-15 you will hear the last of the grandiose organ recessionals before we cease to utilize instrumental music that does not support some sort of singing. Sometimes, the organist continues to play at the end of hymns to cover ritual action (ex. preparation of the altar and gifts or at the end of communion during the purification of the vessels). During Lent, you may observe increased silence as the music will stop completely once we have finished singing a hymn. Lastly, during the season of Lent you will not hear the church bells ring the Westminster Chimes on the hour and songbooks at the conclusion of Mass; however, the bells will continue to ring the call-toworship bells three minutes prior to each Mass. On Holy Thursday, the bells ring during the singing of the “Gloria” and then are retired completely for the remainder of the Triduum until the “Gloria” is once again sung at the Easter Vigil. We will utilize the full peal of bells with our carillon on Easter Sunday. —Kevin Burrow, Director of Music Ministry Page 6 | February 15, 2015 | The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18th LENTEN REGULATIONS Fasting and Abstinence During Lent 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Ash Wednesday: February 18, 2015 Ash Wednesday is a day of universal fast and abstinence in the Church. Today, the ashes are blessed and imposed after the homily. The ashes are of branches of the olive tree, or according to custom, of the palm or other trees, which have been blessed the previous year. The ordinary minister for the blessing of ashes is a priest or deacon. Other ministers (extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion) may assist with the imposition of ashes where there is genuine need. (Order of Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours and Celebration of the Eucharist, 2014 © Paulist Press, Inc.) The blessing and distribution of ashes may also take place outside Mass. In this case, the rite is preceded by a Liturgy of the Word, with the Entrance Antiphon, the Collect, and their readings with their chants as at Mass. Then follows the Homily and the blessing and distribution of ashes. The rite is concluded with the Universal Prayer, the Blessing, and the Dismissal of the Faithful. During 2014 the Pantry supplied food to 21,500 people, an increase of 18%. A total of 860,000 lbs. of food was distributed. Because of the continued generous support the pantry receives from St. James, other Glen Ellyn churches, community organizations, and the new Direct Connect Program, a partnership with local retailers, the pantry was able to meet the additional requests. The increased requests resulted in increased need for volunteer services. Volunteers donate a minimum of 2 to 3 hours each month to help fill orders, stock shelves and pickup food donated by retailers. In winter the pantry has a drop in volunteer services. Many volunteers leave the area for their winter homes. If you wish to volunteer, call Terri at 630-469-6988. Terri will be happy to arrange a time convenient for you.
