Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus Came To Heal
Sick and heartbroken.
Discouraged, damaged and restored.
Jesus came to heal.
Sometimes it’s not about what we do.
It’s about what’s already been done.

From the Pastor
Lent Begins Wednesday
The Lenten Season begins with us calling to attention our
need for personal transformation on Ash Wednesday.
Masses will be celebrated at 7:30 am, 9 am and 7:30 pm. A
prayer service will be held simultaneously in the Church and
in the Meaney Hall Gym at 3:45 pm.
It is our hope that the adults of our community would think
not so much about giving things up for Lent, but about
forming new habits that last beyond Lent. Our small group
series will focus on prayer this year as will our Sunday
message series. Expand your prayer life beyond just the
memorized prayers you might have learned as a youth. Join
a group now. Take time to attend a Cornerstone Retreat (see
our website for the sign-up information). Once again this
year you can take advantage of the “go home overnight”
option at this retreat. You can sign up for the Dynamic
Catholic program: make this the Best Lent Ever (see
www.dynamiccatholic.com); attend daily Mass and follow
the scripture readings of the season; take some time each
Wednesday night in our Church between 7:30 and 8:30 pm
for a quiet reflection time during a Eucharistic Holy Hour priests will be available for confession each Wednesday
during that time as well; pray the stations of the cross with
us each Friday in Lent at 7:30 pm in Church; engage
yourself and others in some meaningful service project in
which you not only do good for others, but take time to
reflect upon the experience. Let’s make Lent a powerful
experience for our parish this year!
R.C.I.A. (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
I would like to express our congratulations and prayerful
support to those in our community who are preparing to
receive the initiation Sacraments at Easter and during the
Easter Season. This Sunday Sabrina Mizerak, Lorenzo
Mizerek and Eugene Ing will attend the Rite of Election at
the Cathedral Basilica in Newark. This formal step in the
process of their full initiation at Easter (Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist) marks their final preparation
time and acceptance to receive these Sacraments at the next
Easter Vigil. It is a time of joy for them, their families,
sponsors and our parish. Congratulations to each of them.
Our prayers are with you at this important moment in your
life.
On Saturday, February 21, Annabelle Farrales and Kathy
Sullivan will attend the Rite of Continuing Conversion at the
Cathedral. These two women, already one with us through
Baptism, will be completing their initiation during the Easter
Season by being accepted into the Roman Catholic faith and
receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and/or Eucharist.
Our prayers are with you as well.
I want to acknowledge our RCIA team for their faithful
service to all those preparing to be initiated into the fuller
life of the Church for their dedication, guidance, and
personal care of all these people.

Finally, there are many infants who will soon be baptized,
elementary students preparing for First Holy Communion
and our teenagers who are preparing to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation during the Easter Season. During
this Holy Season, we remember them in prayer as well as
those who are working with them to prepare them.

Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal
This year’s Appeal, Sharing God’s Blessings, is a
perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God’s generosity
to us and to share the blessings we have been given with
those around us. This year, our parish goal is
$131,649.00.
This year’s Appeal will continue to support the many
good works of the ministries throughout the Archdiocese.
We are often reminded by our Holy Father Pope Francis
and sacred scripture that in order to love one another we
must share the blessings which God has provided to us.
We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by
God and return it to Him so that not one of our brothers
and sisters goes without; without the gift of faith, without
the essential human needs, and without a personal
relationship with Our Lord.
The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food,
shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual
guidance and CYO programs available for the young;
insures the future leadership of the Church with
seminarian education and training; and most important,
brings Christ’s Good News to the people of the
Archdiocese. Thousands of people in the four counties
served by the Archdiocese of Newark are assisted each
year through various programs and ministries funded by
the Appeal. Our parish also benefits by receiving a
rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal. Watch this
year’s Annual Appeal video online at www.rcan.org/
sharing to see firsthand the impact that YOUR gift makes.
To learn more about the ministries of the Archdiocese of
Newark, please visit www.rcan.org/sharing.
“What counts above all else is “faith working through
love” (Gal 5:6). Works of love directed to one’s neighbor
are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior
grace of the Spirit.”
-Pope Francis

Parish Mission Statement
The Parish Community of St. Helen is a Roman Catholic Church
dedicated to
Worshipping God
by sharing the saving message of Jesus Christ
Serving Others
by supporting, comforting and assisting those in
need
Making Disciples
by fostering the spiritual growth of all its people
STRATEGY
St. Helen’s Church has the most registered families in its history,
yet currently, we report a pattern of lower Mass attendance.
• Our strategy is to make Church matter to our parishioners.
• Central to our plan is making Sunday Eucharist the source and
summit of our faith community as envisioned by the Second Vatican
Council.
• We commit ourselves to providing a weekend message that is
relevant and well-prepared.
• We commit ourselves to music that inspires the hearts of those
who join us while encouraging active participation among all.
• We commit ourselves to the children of our parish by inviting them
to age appropriate experiences of faith formation.
• We commit ourselves to reaching out to inactive parishioners,
encouraging those who attend Mass to engage in ministry and
spiritual growth, and challenging dedicated disciples to invite
newcomers to our community.
VALUES
• As a Roman Catholic faith community, we are shaped by both
God’s Word and our Sacred Traditions as handed on to the
successors of the Apostles.
• The Eucharist and the Sacraments are central to our faith. We
value ongoing conversion to Jesus Christ.
Daily prayer, scripture readings, small group participation and
ministry are the desired goal of all our members. We aim to make
disciples.
• We believe that service to others flows from our call to
discipleship. We believe in serving those in our parish community,
in our surrounding area, as well as those in special need in our
country and in the world.
• We believe in a missionary spirit.
• We have a special place for those that are searching for a
Catholic faith community where they will find a warm welcome,
personal pastoral care, and faith development opportunities that are
of high quality. We love seekers.
