ROTARY DISTRICT 7690
FEBRUARY 2015 DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S NEWSLETTER
“Light Up Rotary”
Patrick Eakes, 205 Stage Coach Trail, Greensboro, NC 27409
February is an extremely important month
in our district. We celebrate a historic anniversary and two important Rotary initiatives.
Patrick Eakes
District Governor
February 23rd marks 110 years since Paul
Harris, Gustave Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and
Hiram Shorey met in Loehr’s office in Chicago.
I am sure those four men had no idea that
they were starting a powerful organization of
business and community leaders that would
grow to 34,000 clubs in over 200 countries
and geographical areas. This month, we
celebrate their creation, Rotary International,
with two powerful initiatives.
The first initiative is our district’s Women in
Rotary month. Clubs across our district are
holding events designed to introduce women
leaders to all that Rotary offers: fellowship,
personal and business development, and the
opportunity for service. I encourage you to
embrace this initiative by inviting a strong
female candidate to visit your club.
The second initiative is Rotary Has Heart, a
zone-wide celebration of service to our communities. I encourage you to support Rotary
Has Heart by sending me a summary of your
club’s most impactful community service
project completed this quarter, along with the
ways your club publicized the project. I will
select the project with the largest impact and
best publicity to submit to Rotary Zone 33 for
recognition.

I hope that in February, you will celebrate
both our historic founding in 1905 and how
far we have come, by celebrating Women in
Rotary and Rotary Has Heart.

WHAT: ROTARY PEACE SYMPOSIUM
WHEN: FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2015
WHERE: SHERATON HOTEL –
CHAPEL HILL
A Peace Symposium is planned for Friday,
April 10 at the Sheraton Hotel in Chapel Hill.
The theme for this special event is Peace
Begins With Us.” John Kenny, Past RI
President and Chair of The Rotary
Foundation Trustees will be the keynote
speaker. Others slated to speak will be Ryan
Rowe, 2012 Peace Scholar and CEO Diana
Mao of Nomi Network who will share
information on Human Trafficking. Diana
recently spoke at Rotary/UN Day in New
York. The program will also feature Rotaract
and Interact presentations and a Rotary Action Group for Peace. This is second year for
the symposium. Registration will begin at
8:30 am and the program at 9:30 am.
The day following the symposium the
Duke/UNC Peace Center Fellows
presentations are scheduled on the campus
of UNC-Chapel Hill.
The United States Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians will hold its national tournament in Hilton Head in May. I have played in
three of the last four USGFR tournaments, and I have found them to be among the best fellowship events I have experienced in Rotary. Golf is the reason for the tournament, but the real focus is on Rotarians and their guests having fun.
Hilton Head is easy to reach by car, and the weather is usually gorgeous there in mid-May. The tournament is open to
golfers of all abilities and uses a net Stableford system to keep the tournament fair to all concerned. Non-golfing guests
have a full tour schedule available to them.
The USGFR holds its national tournament in a different location each year, and since this is the fifth stop in the southeast in
the last seven years (following Orlando, Nashville, Greensboro, and Gulf Shores), it is not likely to be nearby anytime soon.
Hilton Head will be a great opportunity to have fun with other Rotarian golfers from across the country.
The USGFR was kind enough to schedule the tournament not to conflict with our District Conference, so I hope we will be
well-represented at the national tournament.

I look forward to seeing you in Hilton Head in May!

Friendship Exchange
May 2015
Once again our district is privileged to participate in an international Rotary
Friendship Exchange! We have the opportunity to genuinely experience another
culture by hosting and visiting one another. As we have learned, taking part in an
exchange is a wonderful way to make new friends and establish international
service partnerships.
This time, we have an opportunity to make friends with Rotarians from Rotary
District 1400 in Finland. Matti and Virpi Honkala and Risto and Leena Korva will
be visiting with us from May 21 to June 3, 2015. Travel plans call for them to stay
in the Guilford County area and then spend some time in the Surry County region
before returning to Greensboro to depart for San Paulo for the Rotary International Convention.
If your club is interested in assisting in hosting outings, meals, or adventures for
our guests during their visit, we will be happy to hear from you. Please contact
Cookie Billings, [email protected] to offer hosting assistance in the Guilford
County region, or Doug Yarboro, [email protected] in Surry County to
offer hosting for our guests during their scheduled stay in the that region.
Not that we need any incentive to be good hosts, but our new friends have
offered to return the hosting experience and invite a few Rotarians from our
district to visit in Finland! Please consider offering assistance as we make plans to
provide a memorable cultural experience for our new friends this May!

TRAINING: FUN AND VALUABLE
Pre-PETS training is an opportunity for President-elects to meet with the Assistant Governor (and in
some cases the District Governor Elect will also join you) to prepare for the President Elect Training
Seminar (PETS). Your Assistant Governor will schedule a meeting with area President-elects (PE) in
February or March to distribute training manuals and banners, discuss the PETS agenda and attendance expectations, review important dates, discuss the protocols and dates for the District Governor’s
official visit to your club, share resources, review goal setting expectations, etc. Please plan to work
with your Assistant Governor to be sure you can attend this important meeting.
HELD IN YOUR AREA AS SCHEDULED BY YOUR ASSISTANT GOVERNOR
President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) is a Rotary International required training for all club
President-elects and highly recommended for President-nominees as well. Our district is fortunate to
be a part of a seven-district training seminar held in Greensboro at the Koury Convention Center.
Not only will PEs and PNs have the opportunity to network with classmates, they will receive valuable
training, information about this year’s Presidential Citation and Gold Club, as well as hear inspirational and informative speakers from District, Zone, and Rotary International.
If you have not yet registered, please do so ASAP!

What is so great about Rotary is that we never
FINISH
STRONG!!! “rest on our laurels,” but are always forging
ahead “DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD.” Our
2015-16 District Governor, Larry Lassiter, has already been to
San Diego for training with his 500+ classmates from around the
world and President-Elect Training (PETS) is just about six weeks
away. As we begin in earnest planning for the new Rotary year,
we have some unfinished goals to achieve before June 30.
Following are some of those Foundation goals I hope your club is
focusing on:
ALL Clubs Attain 100% Sustaining Member Status - Our goal is to
“Lead the World.” By attaining 100% Sustaining Member status
your club will be recognized as a “Best Class Club” at the District
Conference at the Hotel Roanoke, April 30 – May 2. For the
clubs who have not officially attainted this status with the Rotary
Foundation, your intentions to do so by the end of the Rotary
year will suffice. Please strive to get your contributions in
during the April and early May timeframe. Also, don’t forget to
donate a minimum of $100 to the Annual fund for each member
no matter when they became a member of your club during the
2014-15 Rotary year.
ALL Clubs Maintain 100% Paul Harris Fellow Status - District
7690 has a proud distinction of being the first District in the
Rotary World that all members of every club were Paul Harris
Fellows at a given point in time. However, many clubs in the
district have not maintained this 100% Paul Harris Fellow status.
For those clubs who are not currently 100%, I hope you will put
forth the effort to re-attain this status by the June 30, 2015.
A 10% Increase in giving to the Annual Fund from the 2013-14
Rotary year – Our giving to the Annual Fund determines the
available dollars that can be used by our clubs for the work we
do in our communities and around the world. Fifty percent of
our contributions this Rotary year will come back to our district
in three years and can be used for District and Global Grant,
Vocational Training Teams and Scholarships. Let’s top the
$450,000 mark this year!
Who will be Number 14? It would be wonderful to recognize
the next Triple Crown Club at our District Conference. That club
will have attained 100% Paul Harris, Sustaining and Benefactor
status. Many clubs are close to attaining this prestigious recognition and there is time to achieve this distinction before District
Conference.
Remember OUR Rotary Foundation is Unique!
We address the Greatest needs
We have a reach Greater than the United Nations
We can go where politician and religious groups cannot

New Year for Youth Exchange Opportunities
You and your club can make this coming year very memorable by sponsoring a youth exchange student from another
district and country, supporting a community family with a summer youth exchange for a family to family visit, and
sponsoring a youth to take advantage of a long term program in another country with a Rotary district.
The Youth Exchange District Committee can assist clubs with this international youth program.

ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
We in District 7690 have two more local opportunities this year to experience and gain from the RLI resource.
Our District and Rotary will be best served by your participation in some way.
Given the stated belief of RLI:
“RLI believes that excellent leadership skills, an understanding of the power of our Rotary principles and programs, and utilization of Rotary’s network are essential to rendering paradigm-changing service to our communities and world. This program challenges, motivates and inspires Rotarians to engage Rotary and elevate their
Rotary experience to the next level of Service.”
No matter what your current “Rotary Description” might be now your presence at one of our sessions will prove
to be of great value to you personally, to Rotary and to the world. If, for example, you already “bleed Rotary
gold and blue,” your passion, experience and dedication will obviously be extremely valuable to those attending
who have not yet attained that awesome level. If, for example, you have been recently tagged to be an officer
for the first time in your Rotary journey, RLI is a good place to “cram” a lot of valuable information in just a few
hours (Some graduates have been quoted as saying the three sessions at RLI provide much better training than
at PETS!). And if, for example you are a “newbie” (and please accept my congratulations for being one of those
valuable assets to make the world a better place!) you can move more quickly to the goal of maximizing
“Service above Self.”
(And, perhaps, most importantly, if you are an old hand at Rotary and RLI or past the prime of going to yet
another RLI session your active encouragement of those in your club who have not yet attained your level is
critically needed. Please do encourage those around you to attend.)
Rotarian, your time is precious.
Make the most of it and attend RLI.
And attend soon – for too soon it will be too late.
Contact me or any RLI source if there are questions or concerns.
I sincerely hope to see you at Thomasville or Dobson.

Taking Time To Smell The Roses
Every year since 1980, the days after the Christmas holiday leading up
to the start of the New Year are crunch time for the Rose Parade Float
Committee members and its army of about 800 volunteers to decorate
the float promoting RI. Drafted into that army, Sandhills Rotary Club
member Lloyd Navarro and his wife, Leslie, were selected to assist in
this year’s effort. “We always watch the Tournament of Roses Parade as
a New Year’s Day activity – it was an honor to participate in a meaningful way,” said Lloyd. With the theme "Changing Lives Through Clean
Water," this year’s 2015 Float promoting RI featured a water well with
candles lighting the way to clean water, thus highlighting the inspiring
story to a global audience about Rotary's significant projects that provide life-changing clean water throughout the world. The 2015 Float's
design succeeded in marrying the Parade's theme of "Inspiring Stories"
with this year's theme of Light Up Rotary for Rotary International.
Organized into two eight-hour shifts per day with no more than 40 volunteers working in unison on the Float, prior shifts had already prepared countless roses by trimming off stems and placing each rose in
tiny, green vials filled with water to keep the blooms vibrant and glued
coconut, petal cuttings, and leaves to designated areas the float’s hard styrofoam shell. Lloyd and Leslie
initially worked by applying glue to the back of Chrysanthemum blossoms while others simultaneously
applied stickier glue onto the shell frame, then the two teams merged to take turns placing each blossom
onto the float. Leslie remarked, “We were fortunate to work two consecutive days on the Float enabling
us to see it transform from a bland shell to the beautiful showpiece completely covered in organic materials of flowers, seeds, beans, bark, and greenery. It was very specific and detailed work needing to be
done in a required order, but truly rewarding labor.” With one shift of decorating experience, the next
day they supervised Interactors and Rotaractors in doing the Chrysanthemum process while graduating
to the near final process of covering other areas of the Float with the roses in the vials. All toiled feverishly only to stop for a half-hour break at each shift’s mid-point. “We did get two respites from the demanding work – a visit and photo opportunity with RI President C.K. Gary Huang and his spouse Corinna
Yao, and a pre-judging session by the Tournament of Roses Float Judges.” This gave Lloyd and Leslie the
chance to see up-close the eight other floats like Donate Life, Princess Cruises, Honda, and Kiwanis that
were being created by equally excited volunteers at the venue.
Sometime during the decorating, it struck Lloyd and others that the 2015 Float decorating experience is a
small microcosm of Rotary itself – fellowship, working hard, selfless giving, leadership, and greater good.
Flying back to North Carolina on New Year’s Eve, Lloyd and Leslie could not be prouder when the 2015
Float promoting RI was unveiled the next day to millions of television viewers throughout the world in
the 126th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade. Thank you to the individual and Rotary Club donors, and
volunteer decorators who helped to make it possible this year. And yes, they plan to be drafted into that
volunteer army next year.

It’s About Membership…
Ideas in Action!
Susie Kelly, Area Membership Advocate from Area 5 reports in:
Gate City Rotary: I have been told that their meetings are FUN--President Emily Hoole wanted to
highlight "Wearing Your Rotary Pin" this year, so she set about finding a horribly ugly
brooch. Each week, she picks one person from the club meeting and highlights the fact that they
are not wearing their Rotary pin by presenting them with the "Brooch of Shame" to wear during
that meeting. (just a fun idea shared)
Southern Guilford Rotary is starting this month an email list that will include speakers, visitors
and potential members that we are courting. We currently have an email that goes out each
week to our members highlighting the plans of the upcoming meeting--but it's very detailed and
specific. So, starting in January, we are putting together a list of contacts to send a shorter,
perhaps less detailed agenda each week. Before a name is added to the list, I send them a short
email asking them if it is okay to email them once per week (never more than that) AND let
them know that each email will be BCC so that no contact information is shared. I will let you
know if this develops into a successful plan--We think that getting others involved in our projects
will eventually net RESULTS.
At the November Presidents' Meeting, Area Advocate Allen Rembert and President Jay
Brennan of the Summit Rotary Club were there and I ask them to share their personal thoughts
on why Summit has been so successful-14 new members since July. Important Tip: The
membership committee members are told by the Sergeant at Arms where prospective guests
are seated so that several members can talk with them personally and welcome them. Jay and
Allen think that Summit members really BELIEVE that if they get guests to attend a meeting that
the membership committee will SELL Summit for them thus making recruitment as simple as
getting a guest to come to a meeting.
The following comment came from Jennifer Johnson, from the Greensboro Airport Club, about
their membership success this year. “I think our success has been attributed to welcoming/
positive energy at club meetings, weekly update emails, social media, and follow- up with
visitors.”
Thanks, Susie, your feedback of best practices will help us all…so remember our mantra:
“One Member …Per Member…” Just like the little engine that could, you can grow
membership, I know you can!
