1st Sunday of Lent
MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE
FRANCIS FOR LENT 2015
“Make
your hearts firm” (Jas 5:8)
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each
communities and every believer. Above all it is a “time of
grace” (2 Cor 6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he
himself has not first given us. “We love because he first has
loved us” (1 Jn 4:19). He is not aloof from us. Each one of us
has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us
and he seeks us out whenever we turn away from him. He is
interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be
indifferent to what happens to us. Usually, when we are
healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something
God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their
problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure…
Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and
comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today,
this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global
proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a
globalization of indifference. It is a problem which we, as
Christians, need to confront.
When the people of God are converted to his love, they
find answers to the questions that history continually raises.
One of the most urgent challenges which I would like to
address in this Message is precisely the globalization of
indifference.
Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a
real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we
need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry
out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our
world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation. In
the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of
the Son of God, the gate between God and man, between
heaven and earth, opens once for all. The Church is like the
hand holding open this gate, thanks to her proclamation of
God’s word, her celebration of the sacraments and her
witness of the faith which works through love (cf. Gal 5:6).
A merciful heart does not mean a weak heart. Anyone who
wishes to be merciful must have a strong and steadfast heart,
closed to the tempter but open to God. A heart which lets
itself be pierced by the Spirit so as to bring love along the
roads that lead to our brothers and sisters. And, ultimately, a
poor heart, one which realizes its own poverty and gives
itself freely for others.
During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask
the Lord: Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is
firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is
not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of
indifference.
It is my prayerful hope that this Lent will prove spiritually
fruitful for each believer and every ecclesial community. I
ask all of you to pray for me. May the Lord bless you and Our
Lady keep you.

Beyond the snowbanks...Spring Habitat Walks
Meetings are already taking place for several events in support
of Habitat for Humanity. These are particularly relevant in our
area because of the large housing project under way in
Freeport. In early February, an announcement was also made
about a new building project in Scarborough involving 13
housing units. Our churches help fundraising efforts with
volunteers for planning, participants at the events and people
to pledge financial support. Mark your Spring calendar ~ Good Friday Habitat Walk - April 3 - a full day of hiking
opportunity in Yarmouth and Cumberland and between the two
towns along Greely and Tuttle Roads.
Spring Race/Walk in Falmouth - Saturday morning, May 9. This
annual fundraising effort will take place along Route 88/
Foreside Road. It will be launched from St. Mary’s Episcopal
Church, Falmouth, and will involve our Parish. At this time, we
are asking parishioners, especially at Holy Martyrs to consider
helping with preparation in a monthly meeting held at St.
Mary’s by Anne Lafond. The Parish office and Social Justice
Commission can provide more details on these activities.

Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from
heaven and said: “I swear by myself, declares the LORD,
that because you acted as you did in not withholding from
me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make
your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and
the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take
possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your
descendants all the nations of the earth shall find
blessing—all this because you obeyed my command.”
The Word of the Lord
Opening Prayer
O God, who have commanded us
to listen to your beloved Son,
be pleased, we pray,
to nourish us inwardly by your word,
that, with spiritual sight made pure,
we may rejoice to behold your glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God,
for ever and ever. AMEN
QUESTION FOR UNDERSTANDING
Can you connect the story of Abraham and Isaac with
Jesus?
QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION

Mass Readings
Reading 1
Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18
God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son
Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of
Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a
height that I will point out to you.” When they came to the
place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar
there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out
and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD’s
messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham,
Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered. “Do not lay your
hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least
thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God,
since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.”
As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its
horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and
offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.

Responsorial Psalm
1st Sunday of Lent
Ps 116:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19
R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
I believed, even when I said,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
Precious in the eyes of the LORD
is the death of his faithful ones.
R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
O LORD, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the son of your handmaid;
you have loosed my bonds.
To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and I will call upon the name of the LORD.
R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
My vows to the LORD I will pay
in the presence of all his people,
In the courts of the house of the LORD,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
Reading 2
Romans 8: 31B-34
Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against
us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him
over for us all, how will he not also give us everything
else along with him? Who will bring a charge against
God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who will
condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died—or, rather, was
raised— who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed
intercedes for us.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
What is your reaction to what God has done?
Gospel
Mark 9:2-10
Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a
high mountain apart by themselves. And he was
transfigured before them, and his clothes became
dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach
them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to
Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us
make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the
cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to
him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw
anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming
down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate
what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of
Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to
themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Commentary—Echoing God’s Word
by Fr. Clem Thibodeau
Mark:
Mark anticipates already the scene on Mount Calvary
where Jesus will be revealed in glory as his heart is pierced
with the centurion's lance. Jesus is very explicit in pointing to
his death and resurrection as the final revelation and
meaning of his life and his teaching. This is the measure of
God's love for his faithful people.
On Mount Sinai, Moses, too, was transfigured in glory. Where
God is, his servants become radiant. From the cloud we hear
the same voice we heard at his baptism, with the addition
that we should “listen to him,” as was said of Moses
(Deuteronomy 18: 15). Moses represents the Law, Torah;
Elijah represents the prophets. The booths which Peter
proposes are signs of God's dwelling in the midst of his
people. Jesus says that this divine presence cannot be
complete until his death and resurrection have occurred.
Disciples need to be nourished by the Master. We cannot
long continue in discipleship without being fed by the power
and spirit of the one whom we follow. Christian disciples must
stay close to Christ, must continue to listen to his teaching,
must observe the power of his works, must recline at table
with him and lay their heads on his breast. In the Church
community, we encounter him in intimacy. We listen to him in
the Scriptures proclaimed. We receive power and authority
from outpourings of his Spirit. We share his Body and Blood
in Eucharist. We commune with him in prayer. Thus, the
disciples of today also are nurtured and strengthened. They
too are transformed into his likeness. Mark uses every
occasion to teach the disciples of Jesus, those who lived in
the last quarter of the first Christian century. He has Jesus
teaching his disciples so that the disciples of every age after
that will also be taught by Jesus. His disciples are most often
slow to understand and quite dimwitted. Mark is saying
something about disciples in his day, and ours!

Conclude with Closing Prayer
Genesis:
The Book of Genesis is not just an ordinary history of our
origins as a human race, not even just the story of the origins
of the Jewish people. It is not history in the sense in which
we know it today. Genesis is primarily a testament or a
religious witness account of origins. The values and
commitments underlying the narratives are the message, not
the brute facts. These are faith stories, treasured by a faithful
people, for the sake of handing on the faith from one
generation to the other. Christians read Genesis with a still
further meaning. For example, Abraham represents God the
Father who is willing to give up what is the very dearest to
him, his own son. In the Christian Scriptures, God will literally
give up the life of his Son, Jesus Christ, to death on the
cross. We are stunned into silence at the sacrifice of the Son
of God. We stand in silent awe as Abraham raises the knife
over the chest of his only son, Isaac. We do not understand
either scene. We simply bow our heads and obey!
It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.
For after he had told the disciples of his coming Death,
on the holy mountain he manifested to them his glory,
to show, even by the testimony of the law and the prophets,
that the Passion leads to the glory of the Resurrection. AMEN

Romans:

In the Letter to the Romans, St. Paul presents a highlyrefined theological discourse. Following the style and form of
public debates in the Greek world, Paul lays out the teaching
that Christians have nothing to fear from persecutions since
God has already proved his love for them by sending his Son
to the Hill of Calvary, just as Abraham brought his son to the
mountain for sacrifice.
