Avoiding Drinking & Driving During Prom Season
DRY ROADS is an essay contest to promote awareness of the devastation that can result from drinking & driving,

especially for teens on prom night. Open to all 11 & 12 grade Birmingham City School students, the contest is
aimed at reducing the number of student accidents, injuries and deaths as a result of drinking and driving on prom
night in our community. DRY ROADS seeks to start the conversation amongst prom goers and their parents in a
creative and exciting way. Essay contest winners and their guests will experience chauffeur driven luxury
transportation to-and-from the prom courtesy of Prideline Transportation.
Winners and their guests will also receive an all-expense-paid dinner
courtesy of The Harbert Center.
CONTEST RULES:
1. Entries must be hand-delivered by the student to the City of
Birmingham Mayor’s Office Division of Youth Services.
2. Entries must be submitted by 4:30PM CST on Friday, February
20, 2015.
3. Contest judging will be conducted by an independent review
panel. Contestants may be asked to present their essay to the
selection committee.

4. Entries that do not conform to the format requirements or arrive
after the deadline will be disqualified.

ESSAY FORMAT:
1. The essay must be the student’s original work, 500 – 750 words
in length (not including the Works Cited page).
2. The essay must be in MLA format (double-spaced and in 12point type, Times New Roman, throughout with one-inch margins
on all sides of each page).
3. Citations, if any, must be in MLA format including a works cited
page.

4. The title of the essay should appear at the top of page one &
additional pages should be numbered on the top right; the
student’s name must appear on each page of the essay. Do not
include school name on essay.

Q: Which Birmingham high schools are eligible to participate?
A: Jackson-Olin, Parker, Ramsay, Woodlawn, Wenonah, Carver and Huffman High Schools.
Q: When will winners be notified?
A: Winners will be notified the 2

week of March 2015.
Q: How are the winners determined?
A: During the first round of evaluation, each school will have one (1) student essay to advance to the final round.
The selection committee will then rank the top seven (7) essays to determine the prize order.
