Advances in credit card technology are helping businesses become more efficient while
cutting expenses for merchants and saving money for consumers.
Yesterday’s imprint machines have been replaced by mobile devices that plug into
phones and iPads. Utilizing wireless services like Wi-Fi, virtual point-of-sale payment
devices process real-time transactions, print out receipts and save on administrative fees.
This saves money for both merchants and consumers, as the rates charged for keypad
transactions online are lower than rates charged for each swipe of a card.
The proclivity of credit cards in the marketplace has spawned an entire industry utilized
by MasterCard, Visa and others, with each acting as a clearinghouse for billions of
electronic transactions.
According to one industry source, 77 percent of all point-of-sale transactions will be
conducted with a credit or debit card by 2017. Each swipe of the card and each online
transaction generates a fee for the bank that issued the card, an added expense for the
merchant and consumer.
Credit card interchanges maintained by MasterCard, Visa and other major cards have
between 200 and 300 rates. Merchant Service Processing (MSPs) companies target those
rates to generate savings for their customers.
MSPs are highly competitive, driven to develop software and other cost-effective

New program offers reliable, no-cost assistance for “green” businesses
By Deborah Smarth
Would you like your business to be “greener,”
use less energy and save money but you don’t
know where or how to start?
The New Jersey Small Business
Development Centers, also known as
America’s SBDC New Jersey, provide
comprehensive services and programs for
New Jersey entrepreneurs to help expand their
operations, manage their growth or start new
ventures.
Until recently, NJSBDC’s consulting
services focused primarily on core operational
activities, such as helping entrepreneurs
develop business plans, obtain financing,
identify new markets, develop marketing
and sales strategies, learn record-keeping
and accounting skills, find procurement
and international trade opportunities,
commercialize technology and develop an
e-commerce presence.
Thanks to a grant from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, the
NJSBDC network is now able to add
sustainability as a new specialty to its vast
repertoire of services. The new specialty
offers easily accessible services and a
business-friendly approach to help you start or
expand sustainability, or “green” practices, in
your business.
One component of this new specialty
program focuses on the pro-bono and
confidential management consulting services
for which the NJSBDC is renowned.
Our experts will provide you with basic
information to get you started with a more
environmentally conscious program and
help you develop an appropriate strategy.
The NJSBDC will provide you with an
expert counselor who is knowledgeable in all
facets of sustainability, energy conservation,
waste reduction, pollution prevention, toxics
mitigation and disaster preparedness.
In addition to the no-cost environmental
counseling services, the NJSBDC program, in
collaboration with the New Jersey Department
of Environmental Protection, has developed a
New Jersey Sustainability Business Registry.
This recently launched registry is a web site
(http://registry.njsbdc.com/) where businesses
can apply on-line and become recognized
for their efforts in adopting or increasing
as few as five sustainable practices from a
menu featuring dozens of sustainable actions
pertinent to any small business. Stacey
Schlosser, owner of Glassworks Studio
in Morristown, was one of the registry’s
first members and is delighted to share her
experience.
“I am so proud as a small business owner
to have a place to register and be recognized
for all of the large and small efforts I am
making on behalf of a sustainable future,” she
said. “The process of registering was quite
simple and I was able to use the recognition
in marketing materials to grow my business
by appealing to like-minded individuals. And
of course, as a business person every action
I registered for actually saved me money
with the exception of 100 percent renewable
energy, which cost a little bit more. But the
overall number is a plus for profitability. Last
year Glassworks had its largest profit ever.”
Stacey’s comments are an exact reflection of
how this program was envisioned. In addition
to many other free benefits, membership
and recognition in the Sustainable Business
Registry is a credible way for a business to
project its commitment to society and the
environment, as well as a factor that can add
to its growth and competitive advantage.
Registered businesses are entitled to use
and display the New Jersey Sustainable
Business logo/badge and are eligible for a new
NJSBDC Sustainable Business Award. This
honor will be bestowed at NJSBDC’s annual
Success Awards event in December, where
businesses from NJSBDC’s 12 regions and
specialty programs are recognized for growth
and significant accomplishments.

consultations, or for help with the New Jersey
Sustainable Business Registry application,

com. An experienced sustainability consultant
will be happy to speak with you in person,

Businesses learn how to go into hyper-growth
(Continued from page 1)
“The growth isn’t the hard part,” he said.
“Managing and sustaining the growth is the
challenge.”
One key to sustaining growth, he said, is
to manage costs. He told the audience the
only letter they will ever need to manage
costs within a volatile economy is L.
“Buy low and manage for cash flow,” he
said.
He advised the audience to never pay
retail for their assets. Whatever their
suppliers ask, they should offer 60 percent.
People will sell because everyone is cash
hungry, he assured them.
“You can get new or darn near new for
that price,” he said.
Gould referenced a recent survey that
showed 40 percent of happy and satisfied
customers would leave their current service
provider for another for a lower price.
“There is no customer loyalty anymore,”
he said. “They will go to whoever serves
them best.”
He had the audience write down the five
most common complaints consumers have
about their individual industry. He noted

how Netflix was created to specifically
address the five most common complaints
about DVD rentals, such as an item not
being in stock and late fees.
“Promise your customer (those five
complaints) ‘will never happen to you as
long as you are my customer,’” Gould said.
He told the story of how he started
a landscaping business and succeeded
right away because he was one of the few
landscapers who returned phone calls and
showed up when promised. His business
doubled five years in a row because he
addressed the most common complaints
about his competition.
“If you find out what everyone is upset
about in your industry and address that,
you’ll succeed,” he said.
Beginning this spring Gould will be
running a program for the chamber titled
“HyperGrowth! How to unleash the Growth
Potential in your business.” The course is

The Cutting Edge ...
Chamber kicks off 2015
As I write this message we have completed six weeks of 2015. Your Morris
County Chamber of Commerce is off to a great start.
On January 23, we hosted Ambassador John Bolton for our Annual
Meeting Luncheon and 650 of our members heard a detailed analysis of the
threats we face in cyberspace. One week later, the Women in Business Committee hosted Lt.
Col. Ingrid Parker, the first female Garrison Commander at Picatinny Arsenal, for a lunch event
that attracted close to 200 members. Lt. Col. Parker gave attendees an unvarnished look at her
commitment to the military and her conviction that female soldiers are as capable as their male
counterparts on and off the battlefield. She made the case for empowerment and mentoring of
young women to develop their opportunity to be leaders.
In mid- February, Carl Gould of 7 Stage Advisors was the keynote speaker at our Good
Morning, Morris breakfast. His topic – hyper-growth and the key strategies any business can
use to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. Carl chose the eve of Valentine’s Day to
stress the importance of falling in love with your customer as surveys show that up to 70 percent
of customers are willing to leave their current supplier if they believe they can have a better
experience with someone else.
Additionally, we had 300 people attend chamber committee meetings and seminars in the first
40 days of 2015. So a total of 1,500 people attended chamber events since the ball dropped in
Times Square.
In the next month we will be meeting in Morris County with three of the four legislative
leaders in Trenton, Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick, Senate Republican Leader Tom
Kean and Senate President Steve Sweeney. This will be a great opportunity for our members to
raise issues of importance to their businesses.
Last week I participated in a press conference in Trenton with organized labor and several
statewide organizations to support action to fix our Transportation Trust Fund. Functioning roads
and bridges are important to our state. Billions of dollars of goods come through our ports and
companies move their goods through our highway system to customers around the world. The
Department of Transportation has already closed one bridge in Morris County and others in the
state. The governor and Legislature need to create a sustainable funding source that will pay our
existing transportation debts and generate dollars for future maintenance and construction.

The firm also announced that William Monks has joined the firm as a director in the

business administration from Pace University and a master’s in Forensic Accounting
from Florida Atlantic University. He also is certified in Financial Forensics and is a
Certified Valuation Analyst.
............................................................
The chamber is working with county officials on our local infrastructure plans and we have
scheduled a morning panel discussion on May 8, 10:00-11:30 a.m., to review the challenges we
have in Morris County. This will be followed by a luncheon with DOT Commissioner Jamie
Fox. I know that many of our members also are concerned about traffic congestion and getting
employees in suburban office parks to train stations more efficiently.
On another front, Gov. Christie’s Pension & Benefit Study Commission is looking at our state
funding challenges with pensions and benefits. The commission is chaired by Tom Healy, who
lives right here in Morris County, and this is another issue we need to monitor closely. There
will be a lot of pressure to not impact property taxes in any suggested fix for the current system,
which is approximately $60 billion underfunded. Will promised benefits be changed or will the
business community and others be asked to step up to the plate with additional tax dollars? I would expect we see something from the commission soon as the debate on the state budget
begins in earnest in the days ahead.

Earn More Program participants see results
By Michael Daigle
Jimmy Buffett probably would like the
Morris County Chamber of Commercesponsored Earn More Program because it
is about changes in latitude and changes in
attitude.
Once she defined those terms, all the
“head trash” – the worries about day-to-day
issues and processes – vanished and she
was able to focus on the direction of her
business.
Donna Miller, president and founder of
C3Workplace, organized the 12-session
seminar and was assisted by motivational
speaker Tommy Hilcken, owner of
Tommy’s Toolbox. She said the program
focuses on motivation, strategy and, most
important, behavior plans.
More important, “I got the confidence
to start over with a new vision and new
mission,” she added.
“We want business owners to look
at their companies in new and different
ways,” she said.
The 12 participants of the current
program are managers and owners of firms
that provide business-to-business services.
Sessions have focused on financial
planning, marketing, behavior planning and
accountability. The program runs through
March.
“One of the basic questions we ask is,
‘Are you living to run your business or is
your business running your life?’” Miller
said.
That question comes from Miller’s
observation that “the cost of running a
business is not just hard dollars, but time.”
The levels of business organization
of participants varied, Miller said. For
example, some did not have a business
plan. Yet the majority of the participants
have taken ideas from the sessions and
applied them to their businesses, she said.
“It’s about finding a balance,” Miller
said.
Too often, small business owners are so
wrapped up in the day-to-day details of
running the business they forget to look at
the over-all vision, she said.
Nina Tucker, owner of a three-year-old
marketing firm, Noesis Marketing, said
she was one of those who was “lost in the
weeds.”
The program helped her define what
she was good at and how to manage
her business based on that knowledge,
she explained. She learned several key
things that helped change the focus of the
business.
Attending the chamber’s recent Women in Business luncheon were (left to right) Rachel
Durkan of Paradigm Marketing and Design, Kathy Long of Always Best Care, Christy
Ward of M C Ward Images and Maria Farris of GBW Insurance.

“Define what your business is, what you
are good at and what business to go after,”
Tucker said.
7
That change allowed Tucker for the first
time to be able to say no to a potential
customer. Insecure in her business model
before, Tucker had grabbed whatever
business came her way because “you’re not
supposed to say ‘no’ to a customer,” she
said.
Now armed with a new vision, Tucker
has landed the biggest client her company
has ever had and now is on retainer, always
a goal and a way to provide stability.
“I know what I’m good at,” she said.
Laurel Bernstein, owner of Laurel
Bernstein & Associates, an executive
coaching and business development firm
in operation for seven years, said she came
to the program seeking to turn her business
model upside down.
She said she needed direction for
providing structure and vision.
“I don’t need to be motivated,” she said,
“I needed structure.”
One of her concerns was that clients
identify her company solely with her, in
part because the company carries her name.
But she has employees who need to be
recognized by clients in their own right, she
said. How to develop those relationships
is important to both the growth of her
associates and that of the company, she said
“We’re looking for that sweet spot,” she
said.
Bernstein said she was eager to hear
ideas about how to harness her strengths
– her presentation skills as opposed to
networking – and how to focus her business
strategy in successful client areas. She said
she had received more business inquiries
following training presentations than she
had from networking sessions.
She said the Earn More Program helped
her create a business model that is more
sophisticated and nuanced and she is
moving forward with confidence.
Miller said the next Earn More program
might start in April or May.
