NEWSLETTER Spring, 2015 - Sutton Bingham Sailing Club

NEWSLETTER
Spring, 2015
Thing about boats is, you can always sell them if you don’t like them. Can’t sell kids.
Lin Pardey - American writer of sailing books 1942 FROM THE COMMODORE
Hello to you all,
Christmas has been and gone,
the snowdrops are in full
flower and Spring seems just
around the corner.... Right
that’s enough of that. What
about sailing?
Well, the 2014 Boxing
Day Bash saw nine hardy
sailors enjoying some fairly
testing conditions after a
windless start whilst
spectators scoffed Hugh Tetlow’s splendid seasonal food and drink in the warmth of the
Clubhouse.
The new 2015 Freezer Series is delivering a refreshing variety of race winners and some
pretty good turnouts including one regular visiting boat. It’s also heralded the arrival of several
beauties brazenly strutting their stuff on the beach in the form of a curvaceous Devoti D-Zero and
two very technical Devoti D-Ones. It will be interesting to see how they compete. I’m sorry to
report that your new Commodore’s only notable achievement on the water was to capsize in no
wind at all 20 yards out whilst attempting to land. Hey ho.
The first big sailing event of the year is the Spring Warm Up and Banbury Chaser on 8th
March with visitors expected from Lyme Regis and Castle Cove. Please do come along and help
us regain the honours.
Back on shore the recent storms upturned at least ten boats. Fortunately the damage appears
to have been limited but this serves as a reminder to ensure our assets are securely tied down.
Hugh Tetlow kindly introduced me to Ivan Tinsley who is the Wessex Water Ranger for
Sutton Bingham. We had a very warm welcome at the Fishing Lodge and found that Ivan is very
supportive of our Club.
Onto a summary of Committee matters. We have: welcomed Chris Bottomley as the fourth
Trustee, documented Committee Member Roles and Responsibilities (see the Club Yahoo Site
under Files/Club Documents/Club Responsibilities 2015), agreed a list of regular maintenance and
one off repair tasks to be undertaken, prepared a 2014/15 budget and updated the Health and
Safety policy.
Congratulations to Rob Jamieson for recently passing a tough Regional Race Officer course
with a massive score of 94%. I’ll look forward to Rob’s guidance in future (don’t be too harsh on
us Rob). Meanwhile plans are afoot to beautify the Committee Boat to reflect Rob’s new status.
Many thanks to: Tim Robertson and Saffron Gallagher for cutting back the willow trees that
were obscuring the view of the OODs. The huge pile of willow branches in the trailer park will
give you an idea of the work put in! Also thanks to: Julia Green for her constant help around the
Club, to Alan Chinn for getting Dutyman up and running, to Richard Frost for coordinating the
Tera Training Events and to David Thomson for up dating the Club’s Health and Safety policy.
Finally, we're asking for volunteers to help at the Winter Working Party on 7th March (the
day before the Spring Warm Up & Banbury Chaser event). Please do come and support your Club.
Hugh Tetlow will be providing a free lunch for volunteers. I'll let you know nearer the time what
we'll be tackling so you can come prepared. Please let me know if you can come so that Hugh can
get an idea of the numbers. I look forward to seeing you.
A ndy Roxburgh, Commodore
NOTICE OF DISPOSAL OF
ABANDONED
TRAILERS UNDER CLUB RULE 36
The recent clean-up day unearthed
about thirty boat trailers hidden under the
brambles in the trailer park (at the east end
of the dinghy park).
Many are in a sad state and most are
without identifiable owners. Some
appear to have been lovingly created by a
DIY genius crafting exotic materials whilst
others are from Dr Frankenstein's laboratory
including one with leading half leaf
independent suspension.
If you think you may own one of these
trailers then you must clearly mark it with
your name and, ideally, membership
number and pay the annual storage fee of
£15 p.a. via our Membership Secretary,
Merv Clark, email:
[email protected]. I've just
settled my debt!
You'll find the decent trailers lined up
along the back fence while those in disrepair
have been piled up a few yards away.
The trailer park will be checked by the
Committee at the end of March, 2015.
TRAILERS NOT MARKED WITH A
CLUB MEMBER’S NAME AND
NUMBER WILL BE DEEMED TO HAVE
BEEN ABANDONED AND DISPOSED
OF BY THE CLUB UNDER RULE 36.
Clearly we'd prefer not to have to
dispose of these trailers so the Committee
would be very grateful for your
cooperation!
Any of the above yours? If they are
please mark them with your name and stow
the trailer in the neat rows at the end of the
boat park.
Could this be modern art?
BOXING DAY BASH - 2014
11.30am. It’s cold, wet, no wind, really horrible
= race postponed. About 20 people milling
about, chatting and munching on Hugh’s ‘after
race’ spread.
Hugh Tetlow setting out his famous Boxing
Day Spread
12.30am. Cold, wet and some wind = r ace
started with eight boats launched. By the second
lap the breeze became a decent southerly which
continued to build.
Pete Barnstable got away well in a
borrowed Supernova with Chris Jones and Rob
Jamieson (Lasers) snapping at his transom. By
lap three Chris took the lead but then suffered an
awkward capsize giving Pete the lead again
which he held onto until the end of the race.
Meanwhile, Mike Riley and Paul Wilson
in one of the Club’s Trios battled it out with Paul
LeCornu (Solo) and John Rickard (Supernova)
had a good race until he went into irons on lap 4
which wrecked his chances.
Prizes were awarded for the first three
boats with the best dressed boat prize awarded to
Kelsey Green, the award was based on her
‘intent’ to dress her boat evidenced by the
massive pile of decorations she’d bought with
her.
Many thanks to everyone who came (even
if only to watch), to Nigel Leveridge and Wendy
Jackson for volunteering to be OODs and to
Hugh Tetlow for his array of savoury and sweet
delights, tea, coffees etc.
Results: 1st Chris Jones (Laser), 2nd Rob
Jamieson (Laser), 3rd Pete Barnstable
(Supernova), 4th Paul LeCornu (Solo), 5th Paul
Wilson & Mike Riley (Comet Trio), 6th Kelsey
Green (Laser Pico), 7th Andy Huntley (Laser
Radial), 8th John Rickard (Supernova).

CLUBHOUSE DOOR LOCK
The new
Clubhouse door has
caused a few
problems as it is
battery operated and
despite the battery
being changed at
regular intervals,
there have been
several occasions
when members have
not been able to
unlock the door.
If the door
does not operate,
there is a key safe at
the back door of the
ladies’ changing
room which contains a key to gain entry to this
door. Slide down
the cover of the
safe and put in the
same code as the
main gate.
After using
the key return it to
the safe and inform
either the
Commodore or
Hugh Tetlow that
the main door
battery requires
replacing.
TOP SAILING TIP No 4
When fitting out your boat it helps to
have sheets and ropes of different colours picture doesn’t do the tip justice, you’ll have
to see the photo on the Club’s website. When
I bought my
Comet Trio
the main, jib
and
spinnaker
sheets,
kicking strap
and main
halliard were
all yellow.

COMING TO A RESERVOIR NEAR YOU
THE THURSDAY EVENING
SERIES - 2015
It won’t be long before the Thursday
Evening series is upon us – I for one am
looking forward to warmer weather and being
able to get out on the water on a weekly basis.
The 1st Mini Series will commence on
Thursday 9th April - Bronze start 1825, Silver
and Gold Fleet start at 1830.
Each week a minimum of one Race
Officer and two OODs are required – I will do
the first RO on April 9th, two OODs still
required. Please volunteer:
no duty cover = no racing!
All duty volunteers will be awarded
average points for duties (up to a maximum of 3
duties for the 21 race series). If you sail away at
a Nationals event for example and you tell me I
will award you average points BUT you must
be physically racing on the Thursday.
All boats are required to complete:
A minimum of 1 duty if you sail up to 5 races in
the 21 race series. A minimum of 2 duties if
you sail up to 10 and a minimum of 3 duties if
you sail more than 10 (one duty per Mini Series
is a good guide). Note: the Duty Opt Out does
not apply to the Thursday Evening Series.
Cadets are not expected to carry out
safety boat duties but I would like to encourage
them to complete at least one Assistant Race
Officer Duty during the Series).
Full instructions on how to be a Thursday
Night Race Officer will be available in the Race
Hut (Red Folder). Race Officers please use the
paper work provided for Thursday nights and
post a short report after their duty which
includes everyone’s results (finish and
corrected time) and a ‘RO’s Top Tip of the
Week’ on the Club’s Yahoo Group Page
If you haven’t done a Race Office duty
volunteer to be an Assistant RO.
OODs please ensure that two safety boats
are available and fully kitted out as close to
6pm as possible.
There will be a prize giving at the end of
the 1st Mini Series (May 21st ‘Bring a Cake to
Share’), end of 2nd Mini Series (July 9th – at the
Red House Pub) and end of 3rd Mini Series
(August 27th – BBQ at SBSC). Prize giving for
the 21 race series will be at the Annual Club
Prize Giving in October.
The Galley will also be open on Thursday
evenings for hot and cold drinks, cake and
snacks (no hot food) thanks to Julia Green.
See you on the water!

NOTES FROM THE MEMBERSHIP
SECRETARY
Merv Clark is currently visiting the
antipodes and he has asked me to put a few
notes in the newsletter with regard to the
responses to Club’s Development Questionnaire
which was delivered to all members with the
membership renewal forms.
Some good suggestions have been
received with improved launch and recovery
facilities and extending the Clubhouse among
the favourites. More inputs are welcome and
those that will be seriously considered by the
Committee will be announced in the next
newsletter.
Finally, there are several membership
renewals outstanding, please send them in as
soon as possible.

ANYONE SEEN THE VICE
COMMODORE?
Appearing in ‘Puss in Boots’ at
Montacute Village Hall, Phil Bailey
frightened us all as the wicked ogre - boo,
hiss. Marvellous make up Phil, we hardly
recognised you, oh yes we did!
It’s not just blokes who ‘man’ the safety boats!

HEROIC RESCUE BY 2nd SAFETY
BOAT
Sunday 11th December was an overcast
gusty day and while the second afternoon race
was in progress a distraught parent came to the
Clubhouse. She explained that her children
had been feeding the birds on the causeway
and one of the children had become so excited
that instead of throwing the bread, he had
thrown his favourite teddy bear into the water
by mistake.
With the OODs out on the water
watching over the racing fleet who could man
the second safety boat? Step forward Chris
Bottomley already dressed up for the water and
Julia Green who quickly donned a buoyancy
aid and they raced off and successfully rescued
a very wet bear and returned it to its owner.
Just one reason why we always want two
rescue boats when sailing is in progress on a
weekend.
NEW CLUB TRUSTEE
With David Thomson volunteering to
serve on the Club’s Main Committee he has
had to resign as a trustee of the Club.
In David’s place the Club is pleased
to announce that Chris Bottomley has
agreed to become a trustee joining Andy
Bond, Dr Neil Fraser and Peter Barnstable.

CLUB SOCIAL AND PRIZE GIVING
EVENING
RS TERA TRAINING WEEKENDS
24th/25th January & 14th/15th February
The two weekends were a success and
our Commodore has received positive
feedback from the Commodores of
Teignmouth Corinthian and Royal Torbay
Yacht Clubs who had asked to use our water
for the training events.
It was good to see youngsters from the
visiting and home clubs out on the water
enjoying themselves in the winter sunshine
whilst developing their skills in our sport.
The date of the Club’s annual Prize
Giving and Social event has been put back a
week to Sunday 25th October, 2015.
Lanes Hotel at West Coker has been
provisionally booked but it has been suggested
that there could be another venue. If you have
any thoughts on where this might be please
contact the editor.
PRESENTATION TO
EX COMMODORE
Gordon Parker joined the Club in the
early 80’s and came onto the committee in 1986
holding various positions until 1991 when he
took on the role of Commodore until 1998.
During this time his wife Jemima undertook the
running the galley every Sunday. On standing
down he took on the responsibility of Property
and Club House and supervised the
development of the new changing rooms, galley
and foreshore improvements and not forgetting
our sewerage treatment system which has saved
the Club thousands of pounds.
Gordon first sailed an Enterprise, moved
to a Comet and finally sailed a Comet Trio.
Gordon Parker was recently presented
with a tankard for Outstanding Commitment to
SBSC by Mike Burke and Hugh Tetlow.
Sessions were held on boat handling
and the all important rules of racing such that
cries of ‘Protest’ were heard during the later
races. We had all better watch out when these
young sailors come to race against us!
The weather was good for the time of
year and some of the visiting parents were
tempted to hire one of our Club Comet Trios
and took to the water.
The weekends would not have been
possible without the efforts of Richard Frost
who coordinated the whole event and, with
Andrew Frost, set up the safety boats and
cleared the pontoons early on chilly Saturday
mornings ready for the day. Also thanks to
the OODs who came early on the Sundays to
have everything ready for the day’s sailing.
Special thanks to Hugh Tetlow who
gave up his Saturdays and combined it with
one Sunday duty in the Galley and to Ann
Barker who ran the Galley on the second
Sunday.
WORKING PARTY DAY
Saturday 7th March 10.00 am - pm
We will be cleaning up the Club ready for the
year ahead and doing all those little jobs that
need doing including cleaning the racing
buoys, the race office, secure store, boat and
car park plus other maintenance tasks. If you
are coming please inform the Commodore.

SPRING ‘WARMUP’ AND BANBURY
CHASER OPEN MEETING
The first ‘Open’ event of 2015 will be
held at the Club on Sunday 8th March.
Three races are planned with the first
starting at our normal time of 11.30 am.
The Club will be racing against Lyme
Regis for the Banbury Chaser Cup. Points will
be awarded to boats competing depending on
how many visitors race.
Hopefully members from Castle Cove
Sailing Club will be racing with Lyme and us
towards the ‘Castle Cup’.
Extra safety boat crews will be on station
and we are hoping for a good turn out from
Club members to show our visitors a good
racing day. Your Club needs you!
FALMOUTH AWAY SAIL.
All members are invited to join me and
other regular participants in the Club’s ‘Annual
Away Sail’ at Falmouth.
This year the dates are: Friday 12th to
Monday 15th June. The super b Camon
Downs campsite is booked and we sail off Loe
Beach and explore the creeks, harbours and
cream cakes around the Carrick Roads,
Falmouth Harbour. A Premier Inn is close by
if you do not wish to camp and, of course, you
are welcome to come down for a shorter time.
For more information or to confirm your
intention to attend, please contact me, Alan

ARMCHAIR SAILING
Thursday 26th February
The evenings are
getting lighter and
thoughts are turning to
the Thursday Evening
Series that can’t be too
far away (start 9th April). Whilst not yet time
for evening sailing we thought it would be
great to get together and set the scene for many
happy Thursdays to come.
To this end, Thursday Sailors, Prospective
Thursday Sailors and anyone who fancies a
jolly evening are invited to join us at the Red
House for a social evening. Food can be
ordered at the bar and we have the use of the
skittle alley where we can skittle for a pig.
Come and join us and get your ‘aprèssail’ skills up to scratch.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Lou Hart, Rear Commodore
