The Prayer Guide will help you to pray with focus and in unity with people all over the world, regardless of whether you pray on your own, with a friend, or as part of a prayer group. About 200 000 praying people make use of the preresearched prayer information presented as daily prayer pointers. Prayer topics range from issues in South Africa to issues affecting other countries or people groups in the world. The Prayer Guide is distributed across several different time zones. By making use of it, you form part of a prayer army in God's Kingdom – 24 hours a day! The prayer points are presented in different formats. Some prayer requests will state statistics and request you to pray for certain issues. Often the prayer information is presented as prayers written in the first person, as if spoken to the Lord in prayer. Prayers are often taken from Scripture. The Prayer Guide will also keep you up-to-date with the latest prayer events, national and international prayer initiatives, and other events that give one a broader picture of what is happening in the prayer movement. Training opportunities such as prayer seminars, prayer schools, etc. are often included. As we receive feedback from the Body of Christ, we also provide you with news of some of the breakthroughs that have resulted from the persistent prayer of Christians. You are most welcome to submit prayer information for publication. The Prayer Guide is published quarterly. Your information should therefore reach us 4 months prior to the first month of the publication of the issue in which you would like your prayer information to appear. Lastly: • Use this information to pray during your own personal prayer times. • Encourage other people to use the Prayer Guide. • Consider starting a small prayer group and then make use of some of these prayer points as prayer guidelines. • You are free to make use of any of the prayer topics mentioned in this publication in your own church prayer bulletin and prayer meetings. Praying friends, God is still relevant in 2015. There are many Christians that don't really see God and the Bible as being relevant in 2015. Increasingly I hear people say, 'I read the Bible, but I am also looking for intellectual stimulation'. A few discussions on the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7 can provide us with more than enough material for 'intellectual stimulation!' Ironically enough, when people come to the end of their arguments and intellectual discussions, they find they arrive at the same answers as are found in the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount! So, too, is the throne of God relevant for believers: It is where each person finds the answer to their problem, help for their need and where prayer influences and changes the lot of the poor and the unsaved. History belongs to the intercessors Andrew Murray said: God governs/rules the world and the Church through the prayers of His children. It remains a mystery why God chose to make the expansion of His kingdom and world order dependent upon the prayers of His children. However, it is a deep Scriptural truth and principle, which the Church must take seriously. If the Church of God does not take this principle seriously and assume her responsibility in prayer, she will not experience growth and victory. Neither will there be order in the world; but rather increasing poverty, pain, wars and the destruction of people's lives at every level of society. Jesus said; Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest. (Matthew 9:38).This is not a suggestion; it is a command! When Jesus said to His disciples; Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation (Mark 14:38), it is not just a good idea, and it is also much more than a warning! When Jesus prays His High Priestly prayer in John 17, He demonstrates the importance and indispensable nature of prayer. Jesus prayed to His Father for unity in the Church and protection of His followers (and everything connected to this). His example proves to us how important prayer is. It is an indispensable part of being a Christian and being the Church. When we read 1 Timothy 2:1-2, it is clear that Paul is not simply making a suggestion; rather, he is commanding the Church. We see in his letters that he viewed prayer as being indispensable to any type of spiritual ministry. There are not two Christian packages. Package 1: Being a Christian, prayer optional; and Package 2: Being a Christian with an additional, bonus prayer module. No sort of Christianity or spiritual ministry is described in the Bible without prayer being an essential part thereof. Prayer is never a 'vitamin supplement' to being a Christian or exercising a ministry. 3 Eugene Peterson's book, The Contemplative Pastor, describes prayer as …"a subversive activity" [that] involves a more or less open act of defiance against any claim by the current regime. This includes matters like anti-God, anti-Bible, anti-truth. Theologian, Karl Barth, also said; To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world. And, as we have seen, Andrew Murray was of the firm belief that God rules the world through the prayers of His saints… Prayer is the power that defeats Satan. It is through prayer that the Church on earth can access the power in heavenly places. The problem arises when the Church does her work without accessing the power available in the heavenly places. It is important that the children of God not get caught up in political ideologies and reasoning. Our responsibility is to approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we can receive mercy and grace in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16). It is to come before God with boldness and pray for the future of the Church, our country and the nations of the world. Paul gives a clear directive to the Church in 1 Timothy 2:1-4: Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. What a powerful pronouncement! When we pray for the government, peace comes and people live 'quiet and peaceable' lives in 'all godliness and reverence' in total submission to God! This leads to many being saved and coming to knowledge of the truth. Paul draws a connection here between prayer for the government on the one hand; and peace, living a peaceful life, submission to God, honesty, holiness and the salvation of people on the other hand. In light of this, theologian, Walter Wink's, comment in his book, History Belongs to the Intercessors, makes sense: Intercession visualizes an alternative future to the one apparently fated by the momentum of current forces. Prayer infuses the air of a time yet to be into the suffocating atmosphere of the present. History belongs to the intercessors who believe the future into being. Even a small number of people, firmly committed to the new inevitability on which they have fixed their imaginations, can decisively affect the shape the future takes. These shapers of the future are the intercessors, who call out of the future the longed-for new present. In Ezekiel 22:30-31 we read the following: So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads, says the Lord God. This implies that had God found someone to stand before Him in intercession for the city, He would not have destroyed it. But, He found no one to stand in the gap and act as intercessor to plead for His mercy. The result was that He had no choice but to destroy the city. In Isaiah 59:1-15 we read of the godlessness of Israel followed by the remarkable observation in verse 16: [God] saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor; 4 therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; and His own righteousness, it sustained Him. Notice that God sought someone to pray for Israel, and was surprised that He could find no one to intercede. Thus, when we pray, God answers, He relents from calamity, and He gives new life. When we don't pray, His judgment comes upon us. Therefore, let us take up our most holy responsibility to pray. We would like to call the Church afresh to put aside a specific time for prayer during the 10 days before Pentecost Sunday and to pray specifically for spiritual revival in every church community in the country. Congregations that would rather use their own theme are welcome to do so. Churches are encouraged to create daily prayer opportunities for communal prayer in one accord. Consider, especially, a '24-10': This is when individuals, Bible study groups, prayer groups, or youth groups etc. take prayer slots for an hour or two to fill the 240 hours in the ten days before Pentecost. Many agencies, churches and individuals believe that this year is a time for "ground-breaking earth-shattering prayer" in Libya. Pray4Libya.net has launched the Year of Prayer to mobilize and facilitate others who are called to pray for Libya. This is a critical moment in Libya's history, with major political and spiritual changes inside and outside the country. Now is the time to unite in prayer and seek God's purposes for Libya. Ways to get involved Sign up for weekly prayer updates via email To facilitate a unified prayer focus, Pray4Libya.net provides weekly prayer updates. We suggest that you print it and use it as a monthly prayer focus. It is of great encouragement to many Christians to know that other Christians are praying for the same thing at the same time as they are. This information can be added to churches' prayer bulletins as well as being used to focus individual prayer. A Christ-less sermon is a waste of time. - Spurgeon 8 March 2015: The Government We will be focusing very specifically on the government in the following three months. The Church has a responsibility to pray for the government. (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Politicians and government officials need prayer. When we pray for them, we are not simply praying that they do not make bad decisions, but we are praying for the Holy Spirit to help them make good decisions. Furthermore, we need to pray for the salvation of everyone in government, and for them to live hard-working and holy lives, with integrity and an attitude of servitude. April 2015: Farm attacks / murders and interpersonal relationships on farms Farm attacks/murders is a very emotive issue. This topic is a highly sensitive and politicized one, fraught with conflict, racism, misunderstanding, accusation and bitterness. It is often misused as a political ball to manipulate relationships between farmers and farm labourers and draw political advantage. In the process, farmers and their workers suffer. Much prayer is needed for this complicated situation. May 2015: Government We continue to pray for the government during May. 14 - 24 May: 10 Days of Prayer (Theme: Come, Holy Spirit). We would like to call the Church afresh to put aside a specific time for prayer during the ten days before Pentecost Sunday and to pray specifically for spiritual revival in every church community in the country. Please come and fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in You. May we abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Fill us with goodness and knowledge so we may admonish one another in love. Monday 2 March 2015 Salvation focus: Piracy syndicates and pirates The West Coast of Africa and the Horn of Africa are areas renowned for piracy, especially the hijacking of large freighter ships, which pirates use to extort ransom from shipping authorities. Please lift up in prayer today those choosing piracy as a career or because they fear the syndicates. Ask for the salvation of pirates and especially of syndicate leaders. The light of the wicked indeed goes out, and the flame of his fire does not shine. (Job 18:5). Pressure causes us to ask important questions about the purpose of our life and the condition of our relationship to God. - Mike Bickle 10 Tuesday 3 March 2015 Government focus: Economic stability Our country is currently going through difficult economic times. The National Executive Committee (NEC) underlined the damaging effects of workplace conflict, especially the long drawn-out strike in the mining industry, which has contributed to the contraction of the economy. Many people in government and the economic sector are living selfish lives, have given themselves to greed and are making unpractical and unwise decisions. Pray for stability in the workplace, for the will to work, and all demonic forces that drive people to destructive conduct to be bound in the name of Jesus Christ. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. (Colossians 2:15). http://www.anc.org.za/docs/anctoday/2014/at08.htm The Yao people of Malawi Malawi ranks 10th in the world for child marriage, with 50% of its children marrying before the age of 18. Please pray for wisdom as Operation Mobilisation (OM) Malawi is working to bring HOPE to the lives of orphans, vulnerable children and their guardians through Chiyembekezo 'Hope' School. (Psalm 68:5). Only 2% of the Yao people have been reached with the gospel. Pray for God's favour upon the OM Malawi discipleship training from 15 January to 15 April in the local language. OM Mulumikiza, [email protected], or www.omafrica.org Wednesday 4 March 2015 Government focus: Energy stability Key priorities of the government are the implementation of an Energy Master Plan to unlock the economic potential of the country. This pertains to the energy mix of electricity, gas and shale gas, petroleum and nuclear energy. Pray for Christians in influential positions to execute righteousness and justice with regard to these issues. Ask for them to have great favour to overcome every kind of demonic force which seeks to harm and destroy the building of a stronger economy in Jesus' Name. Because of the transgression of a land, many are its princes; but by a man of understanding and knowledge right will be prolonged. (Proverbs 28:2). http://www.anc.org.za/docs/anctoday/2014/at08.htm Establishing 24-7 houses of prayer The Overberg Prayer Network includes Hermanus, Caledon, Bredasdorp and the smaller surrounding towns. Praise the Lord for uniting the hearts of believers across denominational borders in this area. Ask God for a fresh outpouring of His Spirit of prayer upon the Church in the Overberg area, to unite even more hearts in prayer and pray for spiritual breakthroughs that will result in the salvation of many souls. But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. (1 Peter 4:7). Karin de Bruin, [email protected] or 084 305 2086. 11 Thursday 5 March 2015 Government focus: Land reform An external evaluation process has shown that the Western Cape Province enjoyed a 62% success rate with the running of its 246 agricultural land reform projects. Of the 38% failed projects, 24% were experiencing challenges, while 14% failed completely. Give thanks to the Lord for land that has been successfully transferred to new owners. Please pray for greater accuracy and planning in the handing over of farms to new owners, and that they will receive the necessary support to establish successful farming businesses. http://tinyurl.com/kfkwx4v Testimony JESUS VISITED MUSLIM MAN THREE TIMES Before he became a believer, the apostle Paul dragged Christians out of their houses to imprison or kill them. A modern day Iranian, named Taher, was no better. He even threatened to kill his own family because they became Christians. Like Paul, he received a vision of the Lord that turned his life upside down. Taher was the last person anyone expected to convert to Christianity. He was well respected as a Haji, a pilgrim who had made the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. His wife was a Haji-eh, she had also made the pilgrimage. So, when his daughter came to Christ, Taher was very angry. When his wife became a believer in Christ, he grew even angrier. When even his son turned his back on Islam and accepted Christ, his anger turned to rage. He tried to force his family back into Islam in every way he could. He quoted the Koran; he forbade them to visit the church; he beat them; and he threatened to inform the secret police. At one point, he even threatened to kill them with his bare hands. His efforts were to no avail. His family didn't leave Christ; instead, they left him and fled abroad. After the initial anger over his family's flight subsided, Taher began to feel lonely. In his growing despair, he memorized Koran verses and focused on Allah, whom he served so passionately. "Please show me your face," he begged. The resounding silence made him doubt. What if this god he was serving didn't exist after all and his family was right? He didn't know if he should believe Allah or Jesus, the Bible or the Koran. In desperation, he cried out, "I will believe in the God who reveals Himself to me." 12 The living God answered his prayers through a dream. In his dream, a Man riding a donkey came toward him. He had never seen the Man before, but the Man hugged him and said, "I will clean you from all your sins; you are free. I will give you rest. Believe in Me." Taher asked, "But what will happen if I sin again?" The Man on the donkey replied with the same words, "I will clean all your sins." Then the Man on the donkey left, leaving Taher dumbfounded. Another man approached him in his dream. "Do you know the man on the donkey?" the man asked. "No, I don't", Taher replied. "He is Jesus Christ," the man said. "He cleans your sins." Taher woke up and mulled over the dream. When he went back to sleep, the same dream played before him. Waking up a second time, he became afraid. He had served Allah for 45 years. He was a Haji. How could he leave Islam? But, when he finally fell asleep again, he had the same dream a third time. Waking up from this third dream, he could not escape the conviction that Jesus Christ was the only true God. Taher now also follows Jesus Christ. www.opendoorsusa.org/pray/prayer-updates/2014/May/a-modern-day-paul-in-iran Friday 6 March 2015 Women's World Day of Prayer The Women's World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women to observe a day of prayer on the first Friday in March each year. This year, women, men and children of more than 170 countries will gather to pray with the theme; I was a stranger, and you welcomed Me. (Matthew 25:35). Give thanks to the Lord for gathering people to pray, and for Him listening to their prayers. Saturday 7 March 2015 Prison prayer: Pretoria Central Prison Pretoria Central Prison (Kgosi Mampuru II Prison) is a large prison in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. This prison was the official place for capital punishment in South Africa before the death penalty was abolished. Condemned prisoners were held in a section of the prison called "The Pot". Pray today, for this prison, its inmates and all those employed there. Pray for God's intervention in difficult situations, reconciliation in the hearts and minds of inmates and for their 13 salvation. You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great. (2 Samuel 22:36). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretoria_Central_Prison Sunday 8 March 2015 Pray the names of God: Man of sorrows (Isaiah 53:3) I worship You for suffering all the sorrows of mankind on the Cross at Calvary. You faced all possible grief, sicknesses, diseases, anxieties and afflictions, all possible evil and calamities. There is really nothing left that can hinder me in a relationship with You that You Yourself did not taste. I praise You for Your willingness to be known as the 'Man of sorrows'. Nineteenth Global Day of Prayer for Myanmar (Burma) Today, people from across the world will join in prayer for Myanmar. At least one million villagers are fleeing before the Burmese army. Care for refugees is a great need. Please pray for God's intervention in the situation in Myanmar: Ask for the distribution of food, for the health conditions in refugee camps to improve and for the salvation of thousands who feel hopeless without God. Download this year's free prayer guide for Myanmar (Burma) for more information. www.prayforburma.org or [email protected] Monday 9 March 2015 Salvation focus: Depression Pray today, for individuals who suffer from depression, anxiety and other psychological illnesses. Ask that they will recognize the voice of God in their lives and put their trust in Him for salvation and healing. Pray for them to find purpose and hope in Jesus Christ. (Psalm 42:5). Prison prayer: Westville Prison Westville Prison is one of the largest prisons in South Africa and the only prison located in the Durban area. Lift up today in prayer, Westville prison. If you live in this area, ask the Lord how your church can be involved by taking definite, regular times of prayer at the prison praying for the specific needs and problems the personnel in this prison face. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westville_Prison Reconcile the relationship before resolving the problem. It was a wonderful week! Children literally streamed into the prayer room! There was a lot of hurt, pain and suffering that was touched by God. People had the opportunity to write names of those people whom they forgave in a sand pit, and after prayer, they would wipe out the name. Many tears of release flowed, and we trust the Lord shifted many things in the spiritual atmosphere! Both primary school children and adults spent much time making their lives right with the Lord. For free resources visit www.globalprayerwatch.org/7days Tuesday 10 March 2015 Government focus: Economic transformation processes Pointers to 'radical economic transformation' (in the context of changing the structure of the economy, increasing labour-absorption, ensuring that Black people become full and equal participants at all levels of the economy and, absorbing as many young people as possible into economic activity) are being identified in line with the implementation of plans to leverage State Owned Entities and Development Finance Institutions in the expansion of the productive sector. Pray for righteousness and justice to prevail over prejudice and for Biblical standards to prevail over emotional, unwise and racist-driven decisions. Ask for openness to being corrected and for change according to godly principles to be displayed by leaders. Five members of the gang were sentenced in July 2014 to between 3-12 years in prison for luring victims to Britain with false promises of legitimate work. The organizer, a 35-year-old Indian national, Vishal Chaudhary, received 12 years. The women were forced to have sex with up to 20 men a day. The gang managed the women from a makeshift call-centre using more than 40 mobile phones, each phone containing a victim's name, brothel location, and fees. The gang confiscated the victims' passports and threatened to tell their families they were prostitutes. Some of the women believed they were coming to Britain to work as baby-sitters, or administrative or cleaning jobs, after responding to online job postings. Most of the women came from Hungary; others were from Poland and the Czech Republic. Praise the Lord for answering prayers about human trafficking! www.news24.com/World/News/Brutal-UK-prostitution-gang-sentenced-20140703 ISIS brainwashes children "I'd like to join the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and kill with them because they kill infidels and apostates!" This statement repeatedly uttered in loud chants came from the mouth of a nine-year-old boy. Whenever stopped by a reporter, children routinely chanted the Islamic "doctrine" drilled into them. Please pray about the indoctrination of children by ISIS. Specially, lift up in prayer those nurseries who teach the Qur'an and Islam to very young children. Ask that Jesus reveals Himself to the young boys, aged 9-15, who are sent to Sharia camps to be further indoctrinated. Boys 16 or older are sent to military camps to be trained, either as jihadists or as martyrs. (Matthew 19:14). Wednesday 11 March 2015 Government focus: Educational stability The Education and Health Commission Report focuses on improving the quality and efficiency of the education system. It addressed the implementation of plans to increase the number of learners who take Mathematics and Science & Technology as subjects, ways to improve scholar transport, the procurement and delivery of books and learner material, and the redirecting of the National School Nutrition Program to capacitate Cooperatives. Please pray that the donation of goods to further these programmes will be approved, that nothing will be wasted, and that donations will reach those in need. Resist in prayer every instance of bureaucracy, pride and/or prejudice by governmental officials to the detriment of citizens. These projects are often abused 16 by government officials as well as contractors. In too many cases, they lead to self-enrichment. Pray that such schemes will be revealed and stopped. But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them; 'Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand'. Resolute action shall also be taken against private sector enterprises involved in corrupt activities such as bid-rigging, inflating prices and collusion. There is, however, no evidence as yet of any definite plans having been put in place to stop corruption. Pray for righteousness to arise as the foundation of God's throne in our nation. Ask for demonic forces enforcing their rule and keeping criminals from coming to justice to be broken in the name of Jesus. Now therefore, be wise, O kings; be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. May this be a period of intensified (hopefully day-and-night) prayer for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church and every congregation. We suggest that churches use "Come Holy Spirit" as the theme. Every church community is free to use their own theme, however. We encourage people to have a daily time of prayer, and we encourage churches to fill all 240 hours (in the ten-day period) with non-stop prayer and to unite the whole congregation in prayer. Encourage individuals, Bible Study groups, men's groups, cell groups, youth groups, prayer groups and women's groups to participate and take 1-2 hour prayer slots. Consider registering your church! Send an email to Lizette at [email protected] or call 021 919 7988 or 012 365 3213 for more information. 18 Monday 16 March 2015 Salvation focus: People considering suicide Van Stadens River Bridge in the Eastern Cape is associated with suicide. Pray for teachers to be disciplined in preparing lessons and to take responsibility for the work that has been entrusted to them. Too many teachers are irresponsible and this affects disciplined teachers so that their workload is too heavy and they struggle to cope with all that need to be done. Pray for children to have the desire to be educated and for them to respect their teachers. Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless. Pray today for those who have the opportunity to study to make the best of it, to have a mind to study, to abstain from destructive political events and to have the necessary funds to complete their studies. Pray for godly order and peace on all campuses and for all demonic hindrances and destructive forces to be destroyed and rendered powerless through the prayers of faithful students, as they cry out to God for the salvation of others and the establishing of His will and order on campuses and in the country. Saturday 21 March 2015 Equinox 2015 There are two equinoxes (Latin for 'equal night') each year occurring around March 21st and September 21st. These times are special to spiritualists and Satanists across the world, as they hold rituals in the hope of influencing the earth and her inhabitants according to their purposes. Let us, therefore, be watchful and pray at this time that the heavens will declare the glory and righteousness of the Lord and the firmament to show His handiwork. Pray for those involved in these activities to encounter the Living God as day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-3). Human Rights Day Human Rights Day (21 March) was officially declared a public holiday in 1994 following the inauguration of former president Nelson Mandela. From 18 June-17 July, there is a global initiative called 30 Days of Prayer where Christians worldwide will pray for Muslims. This will take place during the month of Ramadan when Muslims will fast for 30 days. Pray for a revelation of the love of God the Father for Muslims. We pray that they will realize that Jesus Christ shed His blood for them also so that they can be cleansed from sin and be sure that God will accept them as His children and be reconciled with Him. Please get the 30 Days booklet in time and mobilize as many Christians as possible to participate in this prayer initiative. Contact us at info@ jwipn.com or 012 365 3213. Tuesday 24 March 2015 Government focus: Unemployment Government launched the 1st phase of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) in 2004 and the 2nd phase in 2009 to address the country's unemployment. Between April 2009 and September 2013, 3.7 million work opportunities were created. The EPWP targets women and the youth. Over 50% of women and young people have benefited from the programme effectively. However, many jobs continue to be lost due to the economic strain of strikes. Pray today for a will to work among the people and for them to not steal or destroy company property. Pray for relationships to stabilize between workers and employers. Pray also for pride, racism and all demonic influences to be crushed in the workplace in Jesus' name. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Please pray that God will position faithful believers to ensure such projects are established successfully to meet the needs of those without income. Pray specially for openness and thankfulness amongst those who receive the opportunity to develop their skills to aid subsequent employment. Pray for unemployed youths to seek job opportunities diligently, even if it is menial work. Pray for those who are employed to be faithful employees who do not waste time or resources and who will become excellent at their jobs. Ask for worker unrest to settle in South Africa in the name of Jesus. Do not trust in oppression, nor vainly hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. (Psalm 62:10). The ANC is further committed to completing the bulk of the construction work on Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project during the next five years. Please pray for contractors to be faithful in doing their work, to use the best equipment and materials, and to complete the job on time. Ask that no deaths will occur at these and other building sites in our country in the name of Jesus. God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God. Along the road, you will be tested, stretched and stressed and these words from the Bible will give you much needed encouragement. Many of us who run businesses feel like a one-armed wallpaper hanger at times and it's easy to become too busy or too tired to pray. The following verses can help keep you grounded and focused in praying for God's purposes to prevail in your life and that of your business or work place. PRAY 1. Jeremiah 29:11-13: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. In order to have successful businesses, we must trust in the Lord. God's will is what is best for us. There will be times when we do not understand why things are happening in our businesses, but God is always trying to teach us and protect us. 2. Romans 8:18: For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. We would not know good days, if it were not for bad days! So, we need to thank God for the bad days too! Often in business, when we don't close a sale or get a contract that we invested a lot of time in, we take it personally. Start thinking about things in your business differently. When you don't get a contract, ask the Lord why, but do not become angry. It may be that it wasn't meant for you. In some cases, God does it to protect you. 3. Exodus 35:35: He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen, and of the weaver—those who do every work and those who design artistic works. God has given all of us talents that we can sell, but that doesn't mean we should all start businesses! First, make yourself a student of business. Develop your business and leadership skills so that you can turn your talent into a real business. 4. Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Always remember who you are in Christ and who Christ is in you! We are not defined by our bank accounts or the framed accomplishments on the wall. Never hesitate to share your testimony with others about what the Lord has done for you in business. God wants us to be fine examples of His light and love. 25 5. Joshua 1:8: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. The most important thing you can do for yourself, your family and your business is to pray daily. Start each day in meditation and prayer, and you will stay calm as the day's struggles come upon you. Read the Bible to stay encouraged and balanced. 6. Proverbs 16:3: Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established. Whenever you have doubt, go to the Lord in prayer, and wait on God to give you the answer. Do not move before you know God's will and have received His directions. Share your thoughts with your spouse or a prayer partner and have them pray with you. Remember that sometimes He may speak to us through visions and dreams, but make sure you test your dreams and visions: it must be in line with Scripture and ask friends what they sense it may mean. Sometimes God will send people to you with a message. It is of utmost importance that you always test everything, irrespective of the revelation or who brings the message. 7. Isaiah 45:3: I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the LORD, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel. There is no such thing as luck; only blessings sent from God. 8. Titus 3:14: And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful. It is important to be a co-worker with what God is doing. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. Focus your activities each day by hearing God's voice and asking Him to help you accomplish 5 things before 11a.m. daily. You will feel less stressed and get a lot more done each day! 9. Psalm 37:5-6: Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. There will be times when others will think that you are not taking the right direction in your business. Make sure in these times your pursuit is from His heart. Then boldly continue with what He showed you clearly. Always consider counsel, and always ask counsel of the Lord as well. Stay faithful and focused. When you think you have no more to give, give some more and you will be rewarded. 10. Isaiah 54:2-3: Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. You cannot wait until you are rich and successful before helping others. If you do 26 not help others now, you will most probably be too busy to help others when you are successful. Do not be afraid to enlarge your tent to partner with "so called" competitors. There really is enough business for everyone. 11. Romans 8:38-39: For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. If you have done something wrong, or made a mistake, admit it to the Lord. Do not hide anything from Him or try to fix a mistake yourself. Repent and He will forgive you. If you come to Him with your whole heart, He will help you. Be quick to forgive and pray for others. 12. 2 Corinthians 2:14: Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. Be thankful that you know God for all of His goodness. God wants us to be fine examples of His light and love. Testify to others of His goodness. Take special effort to honour His name and testify of Him. (Notes taken from www.succeedasyourownboss.com. Prayer thoughts added). Pray also for healing for those who have experienced the trauma of witnessing a farm attack or murder. Ask God to give them the ability to forgive and for people not to take vengeance. Pray for the physical and emotional healing of those who have survived such attacks and for the families who have been affected by the attack. Establishing 24-7 houses of prayer The Tyger Valley Prayer Network consists of churches across denominational borders in the Tyger Valley area. During their 7 Days of Prayer on the Wall in 2014, they exchanged pulpits, visited a corporate prayer room and celebrated the D4J (Durbanville for Jesus) project, in which all the congregations partook! Praise the Lord for the awesome testimonies of believers coming together across denominational borders. Pray for the protection of all those involved in this organizing team and for a fresh revelation of the heart of God for this area for 2015. But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. (1 Peter 4:7). Thursday 2 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms Worker unrest on farms is nothing new, it has been happening for decades. Many accusations are slung in both directions. Please pray for God's intervention so that farmers and their workers would understand one another and differences would be disputed in a sensible manner. Usually both parties feel that they are right and this complicates talks. Pray that people would discuss their bitterness and grievances with one another sensibly. Ask for God's intervention to grant both parties the ability to forgive and to trust one another again. 29 Friday 3 April 2015 Good Friday: Commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Passover, or Good Friday, always falls on the Friday before Passover Sunday. Most Christians in the Western world commemorate Good Friday today. Please pray for God to touch the hearts and minds of millions of people in South Africa and give them a renewed realization of the awesome gift of Life that they have received. Ask that many would have an understanding of God's grace. Pray for many eyes to be opened and thousands to turn from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness for sin and an inheritance amongst those sanctified by faith in Christ. (Acts 26:18). Social Justice: Learn to Earn Project Learn to Earn is a skills development and job creation organization, that seeks to develop especially unemployed people socially, economically, emotionally and spiritually. Skills development and training centres are based in Khayelitsha and Hermanus. Pray for such projects that endeavour to eradicate unemployment. Praise the Lord for the more than 9,500 unemployed people who have been trained since 1989 and who are now equipped with market-related skills. Pray for graduates who have become economically active to continue to grow their businesses. http://tinyurl.com/ly5nlzy Passover Jelly Bean prayer for children by Yvon Prehn, 30 March, 2011 A bag full of Jelly Beans is nice to eat, but it is also a picture that helps us remember Jesus' complete work on the Cross, which gives us hope beyond any earthly sweet. By using the colours of Jelly Beans, this prayer is a visual way to share the gospel message with children (and to the adults accompanying the children!). Sweets aren't nearly as intimidating as a sermon, and at Passover, it is a good idea to put some in a goodie bag to use as an illustration during a lesson or children's sermon. Consider printing each colour and accompanying verse on coloured paper for the children to hold when praying about each colour. This can also be done with your family at home. Why not put it on the fridge for all to observe during the whole Passover weekend? Below is the text for the Jelly Bean Prayer that you can use to create materials for Passover for children. 30 Jelly Bean Prayer Red is for the blood He shed on the cross. (John 19:17). Green is for the grass he made, His mercies are new every morning. (Isaiah 63:7). Yellow is for the sun so bright, He is the Sun of righteousness. (Malachi 4:2). Orange is for the edge of night, He is there even when we are in distress. (Psalm 118:5). Black is for all the sins we commit. (Psalm 69:5). White is for the grace he gave when He cleanses us from sin. (John 1:17). Purple is for his hour of sorrow when He suffered for all sin and all men. (1 Peter 3:18). Pink is for our new life in Him through the cross. This year the same event will take place from 10-12 April. Please pray for preperations to expand towards the Eastern Cape, the Free State and the Northern Cape. Ask for God to provide financialy, for the Holy Spirit to prepare the hearts of teens and draw them into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Jesus. Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! (Psalm 22:26b). Lindie Pienaar: www.imgainemovement.co.za of [email protected] Sunday 5 April 2015 Passover Sunday Most Christians in the Western world commemorate Passover Sunday today. The first Passover was in Egypt. The Israelites' faith in God exempted them from His wrath and judgment when He passed over the land of Egypt to kill the firstborn of every family. God said, …and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. (Exodus 12:13). Now, 2000 years later, we know that Jesus was killed as the final sacrifice for the sin of all people. Pray that Christians will give thanks to God for giving us Jesus Christ as a sacrifice. Ask for the unsaved to embrace Him as the gift of Eternal Life. Today, we celebrate Jesus Christ as the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 1:5-6). 31 Monday 6 April 2015 Resurrection Day Give thanks to the Lord, O you people, for it is good to give thanks and sing praises to His name, O Most High. (Psalm 92:1). Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! (Psalm 105:1). Praise the LORD! Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. (Psalm 106:1). Thank you, Father, for giving us Your Son, for adopting us as Your own in and through the blood of His Cross. 7 Days on the Wall Report Back: Somerset-West Primary Schools (Western Cape) The delivery of a small Wendy house came just in time for our prayer week and now serves as a permanent prayer room. At the Danie Ackermann Primary School, a classroom was prepared as a space for children to pray during break times. At Somerset-West Primary, the principal allowed mothers to set up a prayer room, and about 15-30 children came to pray during first break. Tears flowed over difficult home circumstances and many children returned again and again to 'fetch a hug' and a stamp on their hand stating 'PAID.' We explained to them that Jesus had paid for their sin on the Cross. Elsewhere, there were sandpits where children could write down the name of a person whom they needed to forgive. After a prayer of forgiveness, they would wipe away the name. There is so much power and healing released when we pray! We praise God for an amazing week of prayer. For free resources visit www.globalprayerwatch.org/7days Tuesday 7 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms There is often an unrealistically high expectation on the part of farm workers of high salaries. On the other hand, sometimes farmers reap a large profit, and the workers feel that they ought to share in this profit, at least in the form of a bonus. Pray for both parties to have insight and to be able to see the situation realistically. Profit and loss in the Agricultural sector is a complex issue and must be handled with great circumspection. Pray especially for workers to understand this, and for farmers to be gracious towards their workers. 32 Ghana: "One Kid, One Bible" Praise the Lord for The International Needs (IN) mission, which has launched a "One Kid, One Bible" campaign to poor children in Ghana (offering a Bible in conjunction with the education they provide for underprivileged children). IN now supports 10 schools in the Volta Region of Ghana giving 6,000 children a Christian education in an area where girls are sometimes given as slaves to pay off family debts. Pray with IN for God's provision of a Bible for every child and teacher and for Bible clubs to be set up to teach students and teachers how to read the Bible. http://news.om.org/newsbytes-article/r42521#5 or [email protected] Wednesday 8 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms Pray for Christian farmers to be free of any form of stinginess and to reward their workers fairly - a reasonable return for reasonable work. Many farmers operate on the basis of a minimum wage and this is not always the most prudent path to follow. Pray for generosity that can benefit everyone on the farm and for workers to fulfil their duty to work effectively and responsibly. Pray for the salvation of both farmers and workers, as well as mutual love and respect. (Matthew 6:33). SECRETS YOUR PASTOR'S WIFE WISHED YOU KNEW She's always there, in the background, sometimes with a welcoming smile up front, sometimes noticed and appreciated, sometimes being silently judged. Have you ever considered asking her to share some of her burdens candidly, honestly, even anonymously? Asking her; "If you could tell the church a few things about your role as a pastor's wife, what would you say?" This is also relevant for any other leader's wife. Ask the Lord to show you how you can perhaps reach out to Christian leaders' wives in your congregation. Here are a few pointers to pray for them. I wish people knew that we struggle to have family time. This was one common response received from every pastor's wife when interviewed. Over and over again, they shared numerous occasions where planned vacations had been cut short because of urgent matters. Family evenings often have to be rearranged due to a church member who is in crisis, and often there are middle-of-the-night emergencies and regular interruptions. A true day off is rare. Even on scheduled days off, their husbands are on call 24-7. Pray for your spiritual leaders and their families today. Pray for God's hand to be upon their family time and marriages, and for them to be able to attend their children's school and other events, as normal families do. Ask for them to have peace that surpasses all understanding. (Philippians 4:7). 33 I'm afraid of making mistakes. Our spiritual leaders' wives battle the same issues that every woman battles: marriage issues, extended family difficulties, sickness, finance, children who make poor choices, fear and insecurity. Some seasons of life are obviously harder than others. Therefore, watch out for such seasons in your leaders' wives' lives. Pray for the wives to have enough time to spend with the Lord. Ask for them to have inner strength and mercy, and for church members to be sensitive to their emotional needs and extend them grace. Pray for them to have wisdom and revelation regarding how to handle difficult situations. (Ephesians 1:17). Being a pastor's wife is the loneliest experience! The difficulty of finding friendships that are safe tops this list. Often you are seen as the one who must reach out to others. People often assume the pastor's wife is always invited. In reality, for whatever reason, many ladies fear befriending leaders' wives or do not think to include them for an event, or an occasional ladies night out. One woman shared, "Invite us to something just to get to know us. We like being known." Ask the Lord to help you to reach out to leader's wives in your church in a genuine and simple way. Pray for those reaching out to them not to share their secrets with others, to cover them and not expose their personal secrets shared for prayer. I welcome having conversations that are about things that do not pertain to church, or even Jesus. Believe it or not, many pastor's wives went to college and had full-time careers before becoming "Mrs. Pastor's/Leader's wife." They have interests, dreams, hobbies, likes and dislikes, and though they often serve beside their husband, they are individuals with their own unique gifts. Do not assume she has the same personality as her husband. Pray for the Lord to raise up true, loyal friends for leaders' wives in your church. Ask for leader's wives to be open and responsive to those wanting to bless them with their friendship, prayers and perhaps even physical blessings. Sundays are sometimes my least favourite day. One lady said, "Sundays are hard, and long, and there is no rest." To a pastor's wife, Sunday means an early morning of rushing around to have the family ready in their "Sunday Best." Although you may not see your pastor's wife on the platform, Sunday's are equally tiring for the whole family. Set a reminder on your mobile phone every Sunday morning to pray for peace in the homes of your leaders, for them to be strengthened for the day ahead and to enjoy their responsibilities. It's hard not to resent or lash out at members who openly criticize the ministry. "The hardest thing to face is church criticism: It's hurtful, offensive, and very hard not to take it personally. You feel guilty, responsible and angry for not being able to have prevented 34 certain things. Emotional emails, social media or gossip are like fiery darts". Please pray for the protection of leaders and their families. Ask for grace in the hearts of church members, and for them to take criticism to the Lord in prayer, instead of just dumping emotional non-factual (or factual) weight upon their leaders. Ask for God to heal past wounds and hurts in the hearts and lives of your spiritual leaders. Please don't look down on me or assume I don't support my husband just because you don't see me every time the church's doors are open. They are wives and/or mothers and are often responsible for running the whole household in the absence of their spouse due to his leadership responsibilities at church. Please pray for churches to consider remunerating leader's wives in instances where they give lots of their time at church. Also, pray for critics in your church to be filled with God's compassion for their leader's family and to pray for them on a regular basis. Ask for leaders' wives to do what they feel called to do in church and not only what has to be done. I wish people knew that we taught our children to make good choices, but sometimes they don't. Jokes about pastor's kids should be avoided at all costs. The risk of rebellion in a "preacher's kid" is no secret. They aren't perfect, and never will be, as are our own children also are not perfect. Pray for critics in church to realize the reality of their spiritual leader's children being merely normal and to pray for them as they do for their own children. Ask that leaders' children learn to walk in their faith, and just like other children, they need your encouragement and love to do so. Remember that every kind deed you show towards leaders' wives is really appreciated by them most of the time, when it is done in a sincere way. Give thanks to the Lord for leaders' wives who are loyal to the responsibilities they have at church, their husbands and their families. Pray for them to hear God's voice regarding His desire and call on their lives, which is much more than just being the wife of a leader. (Reprinted, with permission, from Shattered Magazine. Both farmers and workers must learn to forgive. The problem is that people do not usually like to admit their own guilt. Sometimes, guilt is acknowledged but the other party is also immediately fingered. The Bible asks believers to forgive unconditionally. It is important not to use the other party's guilt as a reason why you don't forgive. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matthew 6:14-15). Friday 10 April 2015 10-12 April 2015: #Imagine The #Imagine youth event will take place in different venues across the country from today until Sunday. Please pray for the safety of everyone gathering for this weekend's events across the country. Ask for a divine intervention of the Holy Spirit in the hearts and minds of thousands of young people, dedicating and re-dedicating their lives to Jesus Christ. Pray for every event and for unity amongst presentation teams. Please keep these events in prayer the entire weekend. But God raised Him from the dead. (Acts 13:30). Lindie Pienaar: www.imgainemovement.co.za of [email protected] Audio Scripture Ministries in Mozambique Audio Scripture Ministries recently visited the village of Tique-Tique in Mozambique to distribute audio Bibles. Please pray for the New Testament to be made available in the Ndau language of central Mozambique, as has been requested by the people, as well as for more audio Bibles to be distributed. A new studio was built last year and the team are now busy assembling and recording audio Scripture material for one of the first pain-management programs in central Mozambique. Praise the Lord for the work in the south of the country, which is taking off! Substance abuse has been directly linked to violence and sexual immorality and is a major source of income for organized crime and terrorist activities. Pray that the Holy Spirit would bring conviction of sin, righteousness, and of judgment of sin leading to repentence. (John 16:8-11). Pray for them to seek God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength (Deuteronomy 4:29), and place their trust in Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord. http://justprayno.org 36 More audio Bibles become available In the village of Matcheleni in southern Mozambique, Audio Scripture Ministries (ASM) teams reported a successful audio Bible distribution. Praise the Lord for another 28 audio Bibles that have been distributed here! You may wonder if 28 audio Bibles are enough, but often, listening groups form around the "preaching point" - the person who received the audio Bible. During the last distribution, 3 women testified of how they became believers of Jesus after listening to a borrowed audio Bible. They now have their own audio Bibles and plan to use them to share Jesus with their family and neighbours. Pray for the ASM team to be able to keep up with requests for audio Bibles, and for the Lord to use His Word to transform the nation. All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O LORD, when they hear the words of Your mouth. (Psalm 138:4). http://tinyurl.com/n6ocz7w Sunday 12 April 2015 Pray the names of God: Precious cornerstone (1 Peter 2:6; Isaiah 28:16) Jesus, You are the precious cornerstone, the whole Church rests in and on You. Not only are you a firm foundation, You also are so valuable - our Greatest Treasure - through You alone we become rich towards God. 14-24 May: Ten Days of Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit We are calling the Church to 10 days of prayer before Pentecost Sunday. May this be a period of intensified (hopefully day-and-night) prayer for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church and every congregation. We suggest that churches use "Come Holy Spirit" as the theme. Every church community is free to use their own theme, however. We encourage people to have a '24-10' - a daily time of prayer, and we encourage churches to fill all 240 hours (in the ten-day period) with non-stop prayer and to unite the whole congregation in prayer. 13 April 2015 Monday Salvation focus: Harbouring secret sin Pray for God to speak to Christians about secret sins (sin nobody knows about) and pet sins (things Christians do that are wrong but which they enjoy and do not want to give up) in their lives. Ask for a conviction of sin and a clear discernment of right and wrong, as well as for a willingness to return to God's ways wholeheartedly. (Acts 13:22). Pray for many lives to be restored completely to honour God. 37 Tuesday 14 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms A variety of reasons motivates farm murders. Many are as a result of avarice or are racially motivated. Unfortunately, racism still exists on many farms and workers are sometimes treated with great disrespect. On the other hand, workers also foster racism in their hearts, along with deep-seated feelings of humiliation and inferiority. The risk of misunderstanding, conflict, judgement and racism exists in every place where people of different races live and work together. Pray for every broken heart on farms. Racism is fanned into flame by pressure groups and political pronouncements. This often leads to revenge and counter-revenge. Pray that the Holy Spirit would reveal to everyone on farms every form of racism, bitterness, humiliation, injustice and fear and ways to deal with it. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. Therefore "IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM; IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP COALS OF FIRE ON HIS HEAD." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:1821). Kazakhstan Please pray earnestly for Christians to remain steadfast amidst a wave of government persecution that is seeking to close churches and arrest pastors using fabricated charges. Pray for small churches which have not been able to re-register with the government and which are now meeting illegally. Pray for efforts by Islamic extremists to seek recruits from Kazakhstan to fail. Cry out to the Lord to pour out a new wave of revival and to bring in a great harvest, similar or even more powerful than what happened in the early 1990's! O LORD, I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy. (Habakkuk 3:2). www.capn.info or [email protected] Wednesday 15 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms Unfortunately, covetousness in various forms occurs in both farmers and workers. This easily leads to the exploitation of workers, which in turn further builds feelings of injustice in them. The accumulator believes he is entitled to possess much. Where covetousness occurs, little respect is shown for the needs of the other person. Unchecked, such injustice may lead a person to feel that he is owed something and he may go so far as to damage or destroy the miser's property in vengeance. A covetousness person is never contented. 1 Timothy 6:6-11: Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which 38 some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, o man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Read it carefully and pray this for farmers as well as farm workers. Thursday 16 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms Many farmers live in fear for their lives and put measures in place to protect themselves. Pray that farmers would also put their trust in God to protect them. Many farm workers also live in fear for their lives and intimidation often occurs amongst workers themselves, which places well-meaning workers in a difficult position as they could lose their lives in the process. Pray for relationships between farmers and workers to be such as to protect one another's interests and lives. Praise the Lord for wonderful testimonies of where farmers and workers have stood in the gap for each other during farm unrest in the Boland area last year! Ask the Holy Spirit to draw them out of darkness into the Light. Pray for their deliverance from evil, and for them to be freed and delivered from every desire opposing the will and purpose of God in their lives. (Galatians 5:19-21). Tuesday 21 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms It can happen easily that farmers or workers hold each other in contempt or feel malice towards one another due to previous behaviour, but the Word teaches us to esteem others better than ourselves. This is not an easy Scripture, but we must pray that Christians (farmers and workers) would subject themselves to this command from God and live it out. Pray for mutual respect and esteem and for grace for one another. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (Philippians 2:3). 40 Kyrgyzstan Give thanks to the Lord for moderate freedom of religion in this country. Continue to pray for villages where believers often suffer persecution from their Muslim relatives and neighbours. Ask for a new unity amongst churches and for true forgiveness and healing to take place in relationships. Pray for young leaders to rise up with a fresh passion and vision for what God has purposed to do in Kyrgyzstan. The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying, "Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass, and as I have purposed, so it shall stand: This is the purpose that is purposed against the whole earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. (Mark 16:18). http://tinyurl.com/pukcta6 Testimony Following Christ as a Muslim I live in the Middle East, born as a Muslim, and at the age of 18, I became a member of one of the Islamic groups and received training in using guns and making explosives. I wasn't very comfortable with what I was doing - hurting people for God's sake. I thought that either I or the group had misunderstood the teachings of God and started to study the Qur'an and the Hadith all over again. I met a Christian who didn't know much Christian theology, but who was full of love for others. Our group decided he must be killed, because he was Christian and didn't pay "Jiziah" (a tax levied on Christians and Jews living in an Islamic state, according to the Qur'an). I asked him if I could have a copy of the Bible and started reading it. I found a great disparity between what is actually written in the Bible and what I had heard people (Muslims and even nominal Christians) say about it. After almost a year of hard internal struggling, I decided I wanted to follow God as He shows Himself in Christ. 42 I prayed to Him, and for the first time in my life, I felt that God was there! I have been following Him since then. He changed all my life! I went off drugs and became a whole new person. My father delivered me to the Security Forces who arrested and imprisoned me for converting to Christianity. They tortured me with electric shocks, beatings, and hanging me by my wrists all night to try and force me to return to Islam. After few weeks of torture, I was put in solitary confinement for almost 1 year, but I couldn't deny the One who had given me life. Now, I am out of jail but have left my home country, as I am still wanted for apostasy. I still walk with Jesus, and I love Him because He loved me first and put Himself on the Cross for me. Show me anything that I love more than You, anything that I have made a higher priority than You. I pray that Your Holy Spirit would convict me deeply and powerfully concerning the idols in my life. Enable me to deal with them, for I worship and adore You as a pure, holy and jealous God. Focus on Internet Evangelism Day (IE Day) The focus of IE Day is to communicate the outreach potential of the Internet to the worldwide Church by explaining the strategies needed to use the web for evangelism, along with showcase examples, and to demonstrate the many ways people can become involved. Pray that individuals coming to the Lord via the Internet will soon be able to link up and meet with other believers in their vicinity and that they will grow and become strong and established in the knowledge of the Word of God. http://missionmanual.org/w/index.php?title=Internet_Evangelism_Day Monday 27 April 2015 Salvation focus: People suffering racism Racism takes many forms and people of all different people groups suffer from it in one form or another. Please pray for God's grace upon the hearts and minds of those at the receiving end of racist behaviour. Ask that they will be able to forgive quickly and not keep any offense in their hearts. Ask for Christians not to give in to feelings of uncertainty, bitterness or inferiority. Pray for the salvation of victims of racism and for their forgiveness of the offender to lead to reconciliation in many relationships. This, in turn, will lead to economic instability, which without exception leads to political violence. Farm stability is of utmost importance because the agricultural community provides food without which we cannot survive. Food scarcity pushes prices up and negatively affects everyone in the country, especially the poor. Pray for the government to take the necessary measures to ensure sustainable food security. Tajikistan Today, please lift Tajikistan up in prayer. Pray specifically for the poor economic situation that has forced many men to leave their families to seek employment in other countries. This poverty breeds human trafficking. Earnestly intercede for breakthroughs in attempts to rescue women from the sex trade and for trafficking syndicates and brothels to be exposed and shut down completely. Ask for spiritual growth for new believers, new leaders to be raised up and for the Gospel to reach the remote and unreached areas of this country. (John 4:42). www.capn.info or [email protected] Wednesday 29 April 2015 Interpersonal relationships on farms One of the main reasons for farm attacks is political pronouncements and empty promises made to farm workers. These promises lead to aggression and workers believe that they are entitled to things that do not belong to them. These pronouncements cause friction and create unrealistic expectation in people. It creates explosive situations. Pray that politicians would not make pronouncements merely to gain votes from the masses and pronouncement that stir up violence. Hundreds of workers have come to salvation. Many farmers have begun to look after their workers with great love and compassion, and on many farms, circumstances have greatly improved. On some farms, farmers and workers pray together regularly for the farm, the harvest and for one another's needs. Let us also say thank you for this change that God has wrought through His Holy Spirit in the country and pray that it will ripple out across the whole country, even in the most problematic areas. Establishing 24-7 houses of prayer Lift up in prayer the Northern Corridor Prayer Network in Bellville. The expectation in satanic circles at this time is that the sorcery evoked during satanic gyrations will come to fruition at full moon. Let us pray with great confidence in the name of Jesus to avert this evil expectation and expose the unfruitful works of darkness. (Ephesians 5:11). Ask God to reveal Himself to those captured in Satanism so that they realize that Jesus is the King of kings and turn their lives over to Him. www.kanaanministries.org or [email protected] Labour focus: Worker's Day Many countries around the world commemorate the contribution workers made to society on May Day, although some countries refrain due to the communist origin of the day. May Day has traditionally been a day of protest against low wages and poor working conditions. Please pray today for God's grace upon our nation. Cry out to Him for a revelation of His holiness. Pray that many would realize their need for God and that He alone is the One who can help. Pray without ceasing for peace in our country and for no lives to be lost at the May Day celebrations today. South Africa is wracked with labour unrest and tension; therefore, let us pray to God for new avenues of communication between workers and employers to be opened which will result in economic growth. Indeed, You are my God, my Saviour. You have loved me with an everlasting love. Jesus, I worship You as the One who came down from heaven to earth, who paid the price, who died and rose again, and who is seated at the right hand of the Father. There is only one name through which man can be saved, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Monday 4 May 2015 Salvation focus: Verbal abusers It is challenging to work or live with a person who has an abusive character. Ask the Lord to touch the person's heart with His loving-kindness and pray for his/her salvation and deliverance of destructive behaviour and words. Pray for him/her to experience the love of Jesus personally and to surrender his/her life to Him. (Proverbs 15:1). Focus on Buddhism during the Vesak festival The Vesak festival (or 'Buddha Day') will take place tomorrow. This festival celebrates three major events in the life of Buddha: His birth, enlightenment, and passing away (on the full moon of the 6th lunar month-May). It is the most important festival in the Buddhist calendar. Buddhist festivals are a time for joy giving Buddhists the opportunity to meet together to take the Three Refuges and learn more about Buddha's teachings. Families bring food, candles and flowers to the monks in the monasteries. In return, monks chant the scriptures, lead a period of meditation and give teachings on the themes of the festival. Today, please lift up in prayer all Buddhists and ask the Father to reveal the true living Lord Jesus Christ to them through the powerful working of the Holy Spirit so that many of them turn their lives over to Christ. Take time to proclaim this Scripture over Buddhists: The LORD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation. Government has promised to provide comprehensive support to smallholder farmers by speeding up land reform and providing technical, infrastructural and financial support. Support will also be provided to communities as well, to engage in food production and subsistence farming to promote food security. Much wisdom is needed because land reform and several issues linked to farming are highly emotive and politicized. Pray for God's intervention in this sector of our economy and resist the forces of evil that desire to destroy good relationships, goodwill and the kind-heartedness shown by many. Pray for breakthroughs in the agricultural sector and for an increase in the produce in our country. Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit. Visit www.adoptacopsa.co.za or info@ adoptacopsa.co.za What to pray for the police • Physical safety: Personal safety is a daily challenge in a society that is filled with violence, greed and hate. Ask that they will be alert to and able to handle dangerous situations. • Emotional safety: The mental, physical and emotional aspects of a police person are always on high alert. There is a combination of stress and anxiety always at work, which can impact the mind in many ways. Pray for them to be able to relax and focus on normal life situations. 48 • • • • • • • • Their families: The families of law enforcement personnel are affected by the pressures their loved ones face on a daily basis. Divorce and forms of escapism (which are counterproductive to the mind, body, spirit and soul) may result. Pray for spouses to be understanding and for children to show love and appreciation for the career their parent chose. Wisdom at crime scenes: Policemen and -women must learn to make quick decisions in the situations that arise throughout the day. Pray for them to have wisdom, knowledge, a quick intellect, comprehension, and to execute their duties efficiently. Insight in situations: Situations faced by the police are sometimes very complex, especially when dealing with human nature. Understanding is "an exact comprehension by the human mind regarding the state of things, situations, or words that have been spoken." Pray for the police to have insight regarding what will best serve each person involved in the situation. Compassion for those they serve: It is easy to become bitter and unforgiving when they daily encounter negative circumstances. Pray for them to have a heart like Jesus Christ's and to be able to feel what an individual may be going through at the time and respond accordingly. Ask that their hearts never become hardened. Salvation: This is the greatest need of all, as salvation is the pathway to resolve all individual problems that may arise. Above all, always cry out for hearts to be receptive to the gospel. Their finances: We all face financial pressures. Our police personnel also have financial pressure. Pray for them in this area of need, asking that they not become involved in irregular practices or take bribes. Their health: The job stress in law enforcement can result in physiological changes in the body, which can, in turn, affect the physical health of the body. Pray for physical, psychological and emotional health. Integrity, honesty and dedication: A virtuous individual is to be highly regarded and respected. Temptation may present itself in any situation so that a person may fail at any time. Pray that they may have spiritual fortitude and strength to be honest and dedicated individuals with integrity. Prayer is the breath, the watchword, the comfort, the strength, the honour of a Christian. - Spurgeon 49 Testimony Younathan's story I grew up in the Arabian Gulf and was raised and loved by a Muslim family. Growing up, I studied the Qur'an in school every day. In my most difficult times, I wondered why God was so harsh and distant. As a Muslim, I believed (like other Muslims) that I had one angel on each of my shoulders, one that recorded my good deeds and one my bad deeds. As I started thinking about my life and the Qur'an, I realized that all Muslims, even the prophet Muhammad, would go to hell for sins they have committed. Wow! I knew that some of the biggest sins were unforgivable by God (according to the Qur'an), and unfortunately, I was doing them, so, I thought to myself, "Why is God so unfair? He created me from the beginning to punish me. He knew I was weak, but is going to punish me for my sins. He knows we have a sinful nature, but then punishes us for that!" The wall between God and me became greater and greater. I decided I may as well sin with abandon and enjoy it, since I was going to hell anyway. One morning an American Christian that I had met invited me for breakfast to discuss questions that I had. I asked him if he wanted to become Muslim, and he replied wisely. He said, 'You know, if Islam gave me what I have in Christianity, I would become Muslim.' And he told me that he had read the Qur'an. I felt like he really respected me and my Arab culture. A week after that, I again went to church with my friend and I'll never forget what happened: The pastor gave communion at the front of the church. I went forward and he said, 'Younathan, this is the blood of Jesus that was shed for you.' I was so touched that he knew my name (it is a big church). I gave my life to Christ. I have been waiting for the right time to go back to the Arab world to teach and reach out to Muslims there, and the time has now come. http://answering-islam.org/Testimonies/younathan.html The world's extremely poor According to a World Bank Report on global poverty, 64% of the world's extremely poor population lives in just 5 countries: India, China, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, when population figures are also considered, the report makes it clear that the overall situation is much worse in India and Nigeria than it is in China. China accounts for 19% of the world's population but "only" 13% of the world's poor population. Conversely, India has 18% of the world's total population but 33% of the world's poorest population live in India. Today, please lift up in prayer the poor and needy of our world. (Proverbs 19:17). Please pray for operations to be performed within legislative processes and for new projects to be rolled out and capacity constraints addressed. Pray for municipal workers to have wisdom when responding to service delivery protests. South Africa is becoming an urban country. By 2011, almost 63% of our population were residing in towns and cities and this trend is expected to continue over the coming decade. Pray that the Urban Development Framework will set out an efficient policy framework on how the urban system in South Africa can be reorganised so that cities and towns can be resource efficient and places where people can live meaningful lives for the next 20-30 years. Ask for God's rule and reign in these projects and for corruption to be rooted out completely and for permanent solutions to be found for poverty stricken citizens. Pray for the Holy Spirit to deliver families that often also suffer from attacks of evil spirits. Ask for believers to pray for the salvation of these individuals without ceasing, even fasting for breakthroughs. (Matthew 17:21). Revival is torrents of living water flowing out of the individual believer. - James A. Stewart 52 Tuesday 12 May 2015 Government focus: Serious crime Some progress has been made over the past 5 years in reducing the levels of serious crime, such as murders, aggravated robberies, crimes against women, children and other vulnerable groups, but they remain unacceptably high. The Special Investigating Unit, the Anti-Corruption Task Team, the Asset Forfeiture Unit and the Hawks, have made progress in their quest to combat corruption in society broadly and in the public sector. Pray for criminals to be caught and for there to be enough evidence gathered against them for their prosecution and that the process will happen speedily. Ask specifically for robbers to be caught red-handed and not escape arrest and that no lives will be lost in crossfire. Pray for professionals with experience to be employed to shut down syndicates. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers is not a terror to good works, but to evil. As of January 2015, HIV-positive patients started receiving free antiretroviral treatment once their CD4 count fell below 500, instead of the previous threshold of less than 350. Pray for meaningful decisions. However, the NDP is reactive (helping those already infected), and the focus also needs to be on prevention, as more than 90% of all new cases of HIV/AIDS is due to sexual transmission. Although many will deny it, the reason for the increase in the number of HIV/AIDS infections, in the largest number of instances, is because of immoral behaviour. Pray for God's intervention in the spreading of HIV/AIDS in (especially) poor and uneducated communities. Ask that people would be convicted of sexually 53 immoral behaviour. Pray for Christians to hear and accept the call to minister in these areas, also bringing the gospel to them. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? Revival in the Southern and Western Cape The first stirrings of the 1860 revival in the Southern and Western Cape, started in Montagu. James Cameron, the Methodist minister in Montagu, wrote a report to the Wesleyan Methodist Magazine in 1860: "Oh sir, what can I write? The Lord is doing wonders here … the Spirit is among us … prayer meetings every day and every night of the week … people who never prayed publicly are opening the mouth widely. Last Sunday I asked those who were exercised (seeking 54 God) to come early to the church for prayer meetings … they came in large numbers, very early … three o'clock in the morning. On Thursday, a poor farm girl began to pray. The words were of the Spirit, we all cried, 'God is here,' and young and old began crying for mercy … keeping on until about twelve noon … the Dutch Reformed people came out of their prayer meetings and joined us … the place was so crowded that a number had to pray outside." For many weeks, the awakening at Montagu was marked by intense conviction of sin, strong men crying out in anguish and repentance. Montagu underwent a complete transformation. The transformed lives of new believers caused unbelievers to ask the way to salvation. A community noted for its indifference was suddenly a community committed to serious religion. Cottage meetings with whole families of all races were held to pray and praise the Lord. All races, even on remote farms, experienced conversions. On one farm, a farmer heard loud crying one morning and found his wife's servant in agony of prayer for the forgiveness of her sins. Soon similar conversions occurred under similar circumstances. Six prayer meetings started. People were crying out, pleading that God would not pass them by. Hard-hearted men cried out to God in anguish. (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). Friday 15 May 2015 Day 2: 14-24 May: Come Holy Spirit! As you read through this historical account, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you and to lead you in what to pray. Pray in the first place for yourself, your own church, the church in general and especially for the church in Muslim-majority nations. HOAX VERIFICATION GUIDELINES It is human nature to respond spontaneously to sensationalist stories, particularly when related to human injustice and suffering. There is something appealing about being 'woken up' from our daily existence, and we respond instinctively feeling the need to 'do something' or 'get the word out' about an emergency or a tragedy. But, there is a danger of forwarding false information, or information which is misleading or incorrect. People's attention is then focused on this whilst there are genuine needs elsewhere that require our prayers. Furthermore, false information can lead to fear and confusion. Below are seven ways that might help the Christian community to test information before passing it on: 55 1. USE YOUR COMMON SENSE This might sound obvious, but very often the topic is something close to our hearts, so we may believe the story before weighing up the facts. Remember, if it is too good (or too bad) to be true, it probably is. If the message reveals extremely important information that nobody else from reputable media sources is discussing be very suspicious. Another application of common sense is simply to look at the content of the email. If the aim of the email seems to be more about persuading than about informing the reader be suspicious. Hoaxers are more interested in pushing people's emotional buttons than in communicating accurate information. Read carefully and think critically about what the message says. Look for logical inconsistencies, violations of common sense and blatantly false claims. Then start your research... 2. CLICK ON ANY AVAILABLE LINKS If there is a link somewhere in the email or text message, follow it to the website and see which other articles are published and whether the source looks like something that reports credible news. 3. DO A GOOGLE SEARCH Type in key words for the 'story', for example, "missionaries kidnapped in Afghanistan." If it is a genuine news story, it will be reported somewhere on mainstream media. If it is a hoax, the Google search will most likely call up some of the following websites (or similar ones) that deal with hoaxes: - http://www.snopes.com/ - http://www.hoax-slayer.com/ - http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/Internet/a/current_netlore.htm 4. ANALYSE THE SOURCE CRITICALLY If the story doesn't register on mainstream media or on any hoax pages, take a closer look at the kinds of web pages on which the story is appearing: Facebook and Twitter are full of 'shared' items that bounce from person to person but have no legitimacy. Blogs are not always reliable sources, as they are completely open to opinion and blogwriters are not accountable to any media bodies in the way that news reporters are. Christian websites are not always trustworthy - have a look to see what else is featured on the site. Also, search other Christian websites on the same subject before posting anything. 56 5. LOOK OUT FOR SATIRE Many of the stories that have very high emotional impact actually turn out to be satire - which means that they draw on, or are based on, some genuine fact but include other completely ridiculous claims (i.e. a little truth and a whole lot of noise). These are either intended as a joke, or are written in anger to make a point about a genuine injustice or tragic issue, but they can cause a major disturbance when they are taken as serious news. All satire websites are required to state somewhere that their reports are satirical, so look for a link on the website that says "ABOUT" or "ABOUT US." 6. LOOK OUT FOR 'CHAIN LETTER' FORMATS Chain letters generally include some emotional manipulation (e.g. "If you don't have the time to pass this on, don't be surprised if God doesn't have time for you") or incentive (e.g. "Forward this to 10 people and God will bless you"). Generally, the content in these kinds of emails is untrustworthy! 7. ASK SOME JOURNALISTIC QUESTIONS Look for the oldest postings of the story that you can find, and ask some questions: • Was the first 'reporter' someone who would have been in the location of the reported event at the time it supposedly occurred, or does the first 'report' look like it could be second-hand information? • Is the image of the reported event genuine, or is it an image from an entirely different event? Do a search for images on the Internet (using a site like TinEyehttps://www.tineye.com/). With a bit of sifting and scanning through the results, you should be able to see whether the image appears on any reputable mainstream media sources and whether the report connected with that image is on the same event that the image was attributed to in the message you received. Jeffrey's Exif Viewer (http://regex.info/exif.cgi) is another good site for investigating images and where they may have originated. If you still have any doubts, rather don't pass the email or text message on! http://www.incontextministries.org/index.php/investigate/hoaxology/2uncategorised/554-hoax-verification-guidelines The world is waiting to see whether professed Christians are serious about their relationship to the living God. - Edward E. Hindson 57 Where does the 10 Days of Pentecost in the Dutch Reformed Church originate? In Paarl, Rev. Van der Linde and his congregation had a deep desire for revival. From the beginning of 1861, there were some stirrings of the Holy Spirit in the congregation. More and more people started attending the prayer meetings. Then, before Pentecost Sunday 1861, Rev. Van der Linde called his congregation to 10 days of prayer, as the early Church had prayed for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Many people attended the prayer meetings during those ten days. On Pentecost Sunday there was great expectancy, there was a realization that something was about to happen. During the afternoon service, while Rev. Van der Linde was praying, the Spirit of God came in power and a remarkable revival followed in the months to come. In 1867, the Dutch Reformed Church Synod decided to encourage every church to observe 10 days of prayer every year before Pentecost Sunday. This practice led to much blessing and spiritual fruit over the next 150 years in the Dutch Reformed Church. (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). Pray in the first place for yourself, your own church, the church in general and especially for the church in Muslim-majority nations. When things 'turn for the better' in society The lifestyle of people, not only of new believers, changed. People started to live holy lives. Family relationships were restored. Husbands and fathers took their roles seriously and the biblical order in families was restored. There were many testimonies of reconciliation in families. Stories abounded of long-standing quarrels being settled, people living with hatred and an inability to forgive being reconciled to their neighbours, families and people in the business community. People from different races were reconciled, worshiped and prayed together and accepted one another in love. Businessmen stopped unlawful practices and were doing business in honesty and sincerity. Working conditions and the quality of work changed for the better. Juvenile crime and sexual immorality stopped. Drinking and cursing stopped. Slowly the prisons emptied. Criminals were converted. Old debts were paid. In Stellenbosch, a church bulletin read, "The whole of society has been changed, yes, turned literally upside down!" The power of Liberalism that undermined the authority of the Scriptures, and questioned and contested the basic doctrine of the Word, was broken to a great extent. The following Scripture references from the book of Acts give us an idea of the growth of the Church in the first number of years after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As you read these Scriptures, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in prayer. This is a true recount of Biblical revival • When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, 3,000 responded to that first appeal. (Acts 2:41). • They went from house-to-house and people were saved daily. (Acts 2:42-47). • Many who heard the message believed and the number of men grew to about 5,000. (Acts 4:4). • The number of believers increased immensely and they joined the apostles, multitudes of both men and women. (Acts 5:14). • God's message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted as well. (Acts 6:7). • The apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God's message. (Acts 8:14). • Many of them who heard the Word believed and turned to the Lord. (Acts 11:21). • A great many people were added to the Church. (Acts 11:24). • All who were chosen for eternal life became believers. (Acts 13:48). • The churches were strengthened in the faith and daily increased in number. (Acts 16:5). • Some believed, of the devout Greeks a great multitude. (Acts 17:4). Revival in KwaZulu Natal A revival among the Zulus in South Africa started in 1967 and this shows how God can break through the darkest circumstances and reach any group of people, at any time. Before the revival, it was mainly Zulu women who attended church services. But, when the revival started, men came to Christ just as readily as women. Erlo Stegen started as an evangelist in 1954. He would go to a region, put up a tent and hundreds would come to Christ, but after a year, only a handful 59 of people would still be in the church and considerably less after 2 years. In the long campaigns of 5-6 weeks, people would come in large numbers in the beginning, but the numbers dwindled. One day, a Zulu woman came to him and asked him to heal her daughter. The girl was possessed by a demon. A team prayed day and night for 3 weeks, but nothing changed. His question to God was, "Where is the power the Bible speaks of?" He came to the point where he was ready to give up. He felt that if this was the result of his hard work, it was not worthwhile continuing. Then, he decided to study the book of Acts with some 30 converts and co-workers. They saw that their lives did not measure up to Scripture and they realized that there was no power in their lives. Slowly, the Holy Spirit began to show them their sin of pride. They used to have their meetings in a cowshed that they had cleaned, but moved them to a tennis court. One day, the people of the town came to play tennis. Erlo was so embarrassed that he closed the window so that the tennis players would not hear the cries of the people. But he heard God telling him that if he closed the window, God would remain outside. God started to show them their hearts. Confession and repentance of sin followed. The prayer times increased in intensity and more sins were confessed. Some hardly slept or ate. In one meeting, a woman stood up and said, "I cannot stand this state of powerlessness anymore! Can I pray now?" One day, a few weeks after this prayer, the Spirit of God was suddenly poured out on them. They felt a clear movement of wind and heard a sound they could not explain. This changed everything. Suddenly, they had power to proclaim the gospel. A revival followed that continued strongly for at least 2 decades. (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). Tuesday 19 May 2015 Day 6: 14-24 May: Come Holy Spirit! As you read through this historical account, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you and to lead you in what to pray. Pray in the first place for yourself, your own church, the church in general and especially for the church in Muslim-majority nations. Revival encounters starting in Port Elizabeth Nicholas Bengu, a Zulu, called the "Black Billy Graham" by Time magazine, was the son of a Lutheran pastor, but joined the Communist Party as a young man. After his conversion in a Pentecostal church, he went to Bible School in Dumisa, Natal in 1936. One night, he had a dream in which he heard the words: "Africa must turn back to God." Out of this was born his "Back to God Crusade." For 40 years (1940-1980), his crusades worked systematically all over South Africa. His first big crusade was in 1945 in Port Elizabeth, with 1,000 converts in 6 weeks. He started work in East London and declared war on sin and crime. 60 Thousands were converted, among them thieves, gangsters and murderers. He preached to crowds numbering up to 7,000 people. It was like the book of Acts repeating itself. Often the sick were healed. At one place, a crippled man suddenly jumped up, threw away his crutches, started to walk and then run. There was uproar in the crowd! It happened while nobody was even praying for him. Sometimes, people were under the power of God so strongly that they could not walk. Many of them were prostrate and lay like dead people. Bengu sent for buses to pick them up to take them home. But, as soon as the drivers and conductors tried to pick them up, they also came under the power of the Holy Spirit. In this way many of the bus drivers and conductors were also converted. After a few days, the police asked the people not to bring any more stolen goods to the police station because there was not enough space to store them! Gang leaders brought their knives and other weapons. The Daily Dispatch newspaper carried an article that gave some detail of the goods being returned: 80 sheets of linen, 25 blankets, 24 jackets, 30 shirts, 25 dresses and much more. This happened before the police requested that they relinquish no more stolen goods. Sometimes, gangsters were so angry that they planned to kill Bengu, but God protected him. Pray in the first place for yourself, your own church, the church in general and especially for the church in Muslim-majority nations. An immoral English society turned to Jesus In 1776, England was in such a shocking state that some historians say people were more savage than could be imagined since the creation of the world. Some men sold their wives on auction in the cattle market. Immorality was so rampant that most birth registers were filled with illegitimate births. Drunkenness was so common that even 5 year-olds could be seen lying drunk in the gutters. Public houses advertised: "Guaranteed drunk for a penny, dead-drunk for tuppence (two pennies)." Vulgar demonstrations were the order of the day. Sex shows, with immorality blatantly displayed, could be seen on the streets. High society had low morals also: From the throne to the House of Lords and the House of Commons; many of men kept mistresses openly and had children with them. Gambling was common among both rich and poor. Women were so scantily dressed that one historian remarked at a ball with the king present, "She was as naked as a Greek sex goddess." Incidentally, the king enjoyed this open public flouting of convention through the display of women's bodies. The country was crippled by depression with tens of thousands unemployed. Sometimes, church services were disrupted by cursing, profanity and spitting; colleges were 61 burned down and it seemed as if there was no hope for society. In one of the districts of London, 506 of the 2,000 houses ran a "gin shop" (a place where alcohol was sold). According to the law of the land, there were 100 crimes that carried the death sentence. People were hanged for the most minor crimes, like spitting over the wall of a nobleman, but for the atrocities described above, there was no condemnation. King George III literally went mad. Children as young as 8 were hanged. The nation was morally, financially and spiritually bankrupt. But, Christians in England began to pray on Monday evenings for revival in England and the world. In 1780, churches started having concerts of prayer and prayed together in unity. After about 7 years of organized, dedicated and desperate prayer, revival broke out in the late 1780's in local congregations, communities and towns. (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). When Cape Town was the "Paris of the South" In 1809, Britain sent two regiments of soldiers to Cape Town. For 4 years, John Kendrick, a soldier and lay-preacher, and George Middlemiss, also a soldier, looked for a prayer meeting that they could attend. Kendrick said that he could not find one Christian among more than a 1,000 men in those 4 years. At the time, Cape Town was overrun with wickedness and immorality and was known as the "Paris of the South." Devout Christians were persecuted and mocked. In October 1809, an earthquake struck Cape Town and continued for 8 days. Rocks were dislodged from Table Mountain and houses destroyed, but nobody was injured. People fled to the Cape Flats in fear and trembling and watched in horror as the city was shaken furiously, as if by a giant hand. John Kendrick later reported, "It was the greatest thing that could have happened in Cape Town, as it brought a seriousness and fear of God upon the people in such a way that many began to thirst after revival. The spark of grace soon began to move from person to person. Prayer meetings commenced and a most wonderful cry for God's mercy followed. The places of worship frequently became so crowded that many were unable to approach the door. Soldiers sought the Lord with cries and tears. Notorious sinners were pleading pardon. The number of evangelicals in the Cape grew by hundreds." (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). 62 Friday 22 May 2015 Day 9: 14-24 May: Come Holy Spirit! Three awakenings in South Africa The revival which began in Cape Town in 1809 reached the Eastern Cape in 1822. Reverend William Shaw arrived with settlers from England and travelled inland to preach the gospel to the Dutch and English on the frontiers, as well as the Xhosa. In 1822, a revival shook Grahamstown, with a second revival 9 years later in 1831. The whole district was set alight, even in the midst of the infamous border wars between the Xhosa and Settlers and Dutch farmers. A third awakening occurred in 1837. Night after night, churches were crowded for prayer. The Methodist church alone doubled its membership. From Grahamstown, the awakening spread to the Transkei. One missionary wrote, "Here in Butterworth, the cries of the people under distress of soul become so general, that the people cannot hear my voice or the voices of those who pray for them; their cry is for God to have mercy on them. When we are compelled to break up the meeting, many go away from the chapel, sobbing." (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). June: 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslims. Contact us at [email protected] or 012 365 3213. James Edwin Orr's research on the "decade of revival" (19001910) proves that the worldwide revival was set in motion by the revival in the Boer concentration camps on the islands of Bermuda, St. Helena and Ceylon. Strangely enough, this revival broke out simultaneously in the different concentration camps, tens of thousands of miles apart, without any contact between the different camps. However, one inland concentration camp, at Fort Amednagar in India, received 1,000 prisoners from South Africa. A South African Reverend started a series of meetings in the camp. Initially there was little interest, but suddenly hundreds of young men were converted. It was a real and forceful revival which also resulted in many of the men being trained as missionaries after the war. The same type of revival happened in the camps at Bhimtal and Shahjanhapur (India) and Ceylon. Of the 2,000 prisoners in Shahjanhapur, two prisoners had a bitter quarrel. One night, they got together and decided to reconcile. They started to pray for the camp and the salvation of prisoners. In a very short time, about 1,000 came to the prayer meetings every evening and large numbers were converted. Revival accounts from St. Helena and Bermuda told the same story: ministers who accompanied the prisoners started to preach the Word very powerfully, prayer groups started, and large numbers of men were converted, many of whom became missionaries after the war. The Diatalawa concentration camp in Ceylon held 5,000 prisoners. Suddenly, thousands of prisoners started to gather for prayer, which led to the salvation of many, with 200 prisoners being trained as missionaries after the war, some even returning to Ceylon after the war. Sunday 24 May 2015 Pentecost Sunday 2015: "Come Holy Spirit" Lord, will you please do it again! Two thousand years ago, on Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church. Many times, however, the Church became stagnant and resisted the work of the Holy Spirit. But God, in His mercy, poured out His Spirit anew on the Church. We find evidence of some of these fresh outpourings of the Spirit in Acts 4:29-31, Acts 10:44-47 and Acts 11:15. Martyn 64 Lloyd-Jones, a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor, influential in the British evangelical movement of the 20th Century, said that when we read these Scriptures, the book of Galatians and the portion of Scripture found in 1 Corinthians 12-14, it becomes clear that the Church often experienced an extra-ordinary work of the Holy Spirit in her midst. (Taken from When God Comes by Bennie Mostert). Over centuries past, spiritual stagnation repeatedly left the Church powerless and lacking spiritual fruit. Again and again, the Holy Spirit was poured out afresh on the Church with remarkable results. Let us pray today, as over the past 10 days, for an extra-ordinary work of the Spirit of God in the Church, without which she will be rendered powerless and not witness the salvation of the unsaved or reach nations and those in need of hope with the gospel. We need God's divine power to do His work. Monday 25 May 2015 Salvation focus: Bullies Pray for children and adults whom you know who display bullying behaviour. Pray for them to have a personal experience of the gentleness and love of Jesus for them personally in their particular circumstance. Most bullies are hungry for love and kindness. Ask the Lord how you can help to soften and nurture such a person. Tuesday 26 May 2015 Focus on the government: Labour force About 24% of employed adults in South Africa are members of a trade union, Mines and Quarries being the most unionised industries, with 82% membership. Please pray for stability in our country over the next 3 months (strikes are most common during the 3-month period JuneAugust). Cry out to the Lord for the salvation of trade union leaders country-wide. Pray that they will not violate the workers' trust by destabilising the economy. www.eighty20.co.za and [email protected] United Kingdom paedophile challenge 'Dark net' is the term which refers to parts of the Internet that are hidden and hard to access without special software. Pray today from Ephesians 6:10-16, declaring the armour of God over the hearts and minds of every person in our country. Pray that every citizen will come to have the mind of Christ and their intentions will turn from evil to good. Ask for every form of demonic influence to dissolve completely through the declaration of the Word of the Lord into the spiritual atmosphere. Pray for government to keep its promises, do its work properly and for officials not to embezzle money. Always pray for the true salvation of all people in our country in Jesus' name. …every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. She is finding joy on her cancer journey. She looks for joy. She chooses joy. And she gives joy to others. She has bad days and is honest about them when they come, but, her focus is on the good things that God does for her in the midst of her journey. She and I both pray for a miracle but we also keep our focus on the goodness of God. Friends, family and co-workers have made the emotional load of cancer much lighter to carry. I have learned that there is an emotional weight for both the cancer survivor, and the spouse or caregiver. Some people understand that weight, and help lighten the load, while others say or do dumb things to make the load a little heavier. I thought you would enjoy these all too real faux pas." What not to say… • "My___ (sister, nephew, auntie, etc.) has cancer." Having someone else in your life with cancer doesn't help to comfort this person nor does it help you connect emotionally with them, especially if your person didn't survive! My advice: Don't mention others you know who have cancer. • "I had cancer and I found this amazing herbal remedy that helped so much. I think it cured me! It only cost $150/R1,500 a bottle a month." Vitamins, supplements and proven helps are a blessing if they are a gift. But, ask if you can give them. Don't promote or propose weird solutions or remedies that you or somebody else you know used. My advice: Don't give medical advice. • "Did you know that cancer is caused by a root of bitterness? Is there anybody you need to forgive? Forgiveness releases healing from cancer." At this point, it would be hard not to feel bitterness toward you! My advice: Ask them to leave! • "God will heal you if you have more faith." Enough said. My advice: Ask them to leave. • "Wow, you lost your hair." If someone says something awkward about losing your hair, they normally accompany the statement with rude staring. My advice: Be gracious and change the subject. • "Did you know cancer is caused by eating processed foods?" My response: "Then bring me a steak from free-range beef." • "I brought you a gift. I just love jigsaw puzzles. I think you will love this 5,000 piece puzzle of a herd of 500 zebras! I think it will be so relaxing for you and take your mind off…well, just enjoy it." My advice: Don't give gifts you are not sure will be helpful or wanted. Especially Zebra puzzles! • "God told me you don't have cancer!" My advice: Don't say that. Pray for that, but don't say it. 67 • "Drink five glasses a day of wild-grass smoothies mixed with Mongolian mushrooms. Tastes great and it works wonders. It does give you gas and bad constipation and stomach cramps, but it works." My response: "Wild what?!!!" Good to know Don't hug a person on chemo or allow anyone to visit them who has a cold, flu, etc., or who has been in contact with someone who is sick. Chemo treatment weakens the immune system and makes a person more vulnerable. A cold or flu can throw off the chemo treatment schedule and put a person at greater risk for the chemo not to have its intended impact of killing off cancer cells. What to say… Below are some things our friends have said or done for us that are a huge blessing. Here are a few suggestions… 1. Tell the person you care for them and you love them. It nourishes one's heart. 2. Say you are praying - if you are. It always encourages us to hear that. 3. Ask how they are doing. They have stories to tell! 4. If the person has lost their hair, compliment them on how cute they look, and move on to another topic. 5. Listen a lot. 6. Talk about life. Laugh. Catch up on family, and be yourself. Talk about movies you've seen, books you have read, people you know in common. Talk about everyday life. 7. Bring a meal - but ask what kind of food they like ahead of time. 8. Write encouraging notes, SMS messages, and send uplifting scriptures. 9. Give them flowers. They fill a bedroom or house with beauty. What to read when you or a friend has cancer If you want to know more, here are three books that have been very helpful to us: 1. The Chemotherapy Survival Guide, by Judith McKay and Tamara Schacher. This book was written by two oncology nurses and was immensely helpful and medically very informative. It describes what chemotherapy is, preparing for treatment, preventing and coping with side effects, eating right for recovery, getting the support you need, relieving stress, preparing for and managing care, and living life after cancer treatment. 2. Caring for a Loved One with Cancer, by June Hunt. Fifty very practical, 1-2 page chapters filled with ideas about how to care for a friend or family member with cancer. 3. Healed: Strength for Care Givers and Cancer Fighters, by Angela Peterson. It speaks more from the faith angle but without condemnation. Uplifting. 68 Jericho Walls International Prayer Network Please pray today for all Jericho Walls Prayer Network staff members (and their families), specifically for their physical health, safety and protection from spiritual oppression. Friday 29 May 2015 Unemployment in South Africa There are 7.58 million adults in South Africa who are either unemployed or who are discouraged job seekers. About 50% are under the age of 30. Recent proposals for changes in the agricultural sector have led to even more people losing their jobs or no longer being employed. Please pray for the government to have wisdom and to consider their decisions carefully before implementing them. Pray for governmental decisions not to be politically driven, but focussed on the needs of people. www.eighty20.co.za or [email protected] Uzbekistan Today, please lift the region of Karakalpakstan up in prayer. Please pray for delivery drivers to experience God's love in their work schedule. Pray for Christians to bless and pray for them and to lead many of them to Jesus. Also, pray for God to restore work to those who are unemployed in the delivery industry. 7 Days on the Wall Report Back: Tsitsikamma We saw God do miracles during our week of prayer not only in the prayer room but also on the streets. God healed a car guard's toothache that had extended to his ear. The swelling came down! We also encouraged him in the Lord and could also see his countenance change! We also prayed with his friend about a family matter, who then called his sister who also wanted prayer for her sin. She was overwhelmed and accepted Jesus! The United Nations (UN) estimates that there are 11,000 child soldiers in South Sudan's rebel and government armies. This is a conflict which has made few headlines but has cost many lives including those of the youngest and most vulnerable. Pray for children that are serving with rebel groups, including the notorious White Army, known for sending thousands of children into battle. Intercede for the safety of schools, as rebel fighters are known for taking whole classrooms custody. Ask for learners and teachers to be able to escape safely and for rebel bases to be found and destroyed. (Psalm 46:1). Pray for the end of the war. (Psalm 46:9). www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-29762263 WHY MUSLIMS ARE TURNING TO JESUS? In the late 1960s, there was a major turning to Christ among the Javanese in Indonesia following conflict between Muslims and communists. We have seen similar movements in North Africa and South Asia, along with smaller ones elsewhere. In fact, and perhaps counter-intuitively, the number of new Christians each year outstrips the number of new Muslims, even though the annual growth rate is higher for Muslims (1.81%) than for Christians (1.23%). Over the last century, the number of Christians has grown at a slower rate than Muslims (with Muslims increasing from 12% to 21% of the global population during that time), but this is hardly surprising. Christianity has more total followers than Islam. More people need to become Christians annually simply to remain at roughly a third of the world population. Muslims are increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, but elsewhere the growth is mostly by birth or immigration. The major growth for Protestants, especially evangelicals and Pentecostals, has been by conversion. So what attracts Muslims to follow Jesus? • Seeing a faith lived out: First, we can look at the experiences that most influence Muslims. Respondents ranked the Christian lifestyle as the most important influence in their decision to follow Christ. • Answered prayer: The next most important influence is the power of God in answering prayer and healing people. Like most of the factors that former Muslims list, experiences of God's supernatural intervention often increase after Muslims decide to follow Christ. • Closely related was the finding that some noted deliverance from demonic power as another reason they were attracted to Jesus. 71 • Dissatisfaction with Islam: The third biggest influence listed by respondents was dissatisfaction with the type of Islam they had experienced. They expressed unhappiness with the Qur'an, which they perceive as emphasizing God's punishment more than His love (although the Qur'an says he loves those who love him [3:31]). • Visions and dreams: As with Paul and Cornelius in Acts, visions and dreams played a role in the conversion of many. More than one in four respondents (27%) noted dreams and visions before their decision for Christ, 40% at the time of conversion, and 45% afterward. Many Muslims view dreams as a link between the seen and unseen worlds, and pre-conversion visions and dreams often lead Muslims to consult a Christian or the Bible. Frequently, a person in the vision, understood to be Jesus, radiates light or wears white. • The message: The Gospel message, especially its assurance of salvation and forgiveness, is also a significant attraction to Muslims. • The Bible: Next in attraction for Muslims are the spiritual truths in the Bible. The Qur'an attests that the Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospel (commonly understood as the New Testament) are from God. Even though Muslims are generally taught that these writings became corrupted, they often find them compelling reading and discover truth that they conclude must be from God. • The love of Christ: Particularly attractive to Muslims is the love expressed through the life and teachings of Jesus. When Christ's love transforms committed Christians into a loving community, many Muslims cited a desire to join such a fellowship as next in importance. • Subconscious influences: For the most part, respondents did not say that political or economic circumstances influenced their decisions, but it's hard not to notice that Iranians, Pakistanis, Afghans, Bangladeshis, and Algerians became more responsive after enduring Muslim political turmoil or attempts to impose Islamic law. Benin has over 2.2 million Bible-less people. There are 54 living languages spoken in Benin, which places it among the top 15 countries in the world who are in need of Bible translation. Praise the Lord for favour as Wycliffe Associates have been invited into the country! Ask the Lord for favour to construct a small translation centre here, which will provide training facilities and housing for mother-tongue translators. https://www.mnnonline.org/news/benin-bible-translation-you 72 NOTES: Email version of Prayer Guide The Jericho Walls Prayer Guide Receive the Jericho Walls Prayer Guide via email, or download it from our website.
