Thought of the week
The children are finding out about the Anglican Church. Reverends Giles and Gill came
into school on Monday to tell us about the role of a bishop and archdeacon and the children
will also be finding out what priests do. 1 Corinthians 4, verse 1: Men should regard us as servants of
Christ and administrators of the mysteries of God.
World Book Day Thursday 5th March
All classes will be taking part in the World Book Day.
Please note that the children are not dressing up this year and the focus will be on the planned
activities throughout the day. World Book Day Tokens: Every child will be given £1 book token which
can be spent at participating bookshops. http://worldbookday.com/books
Scholastic Book Club: Children will be given a Scholastic Book Club leaflet to bring home and if you
wish to place an order for any of the books, this should be returned to the school office by Friday
13th March (World Book Day Tokens can be used with specific books in the leaflet).
Year 5/6 Hever Castle visit
“At Hever Castle, we were looking for facts about Anne Boleyn as this was her home before she got
married to Henry VIII. There was a wishing-well full of coins, people make a wish when they throw in
a coin.” Pip
“When we were at Hever Castle Thomas and I were looking at the torture and the history of people
who lived at the castle during the early Tudor times when Anne Boleyn was married to Henry VIII. I
thought the tools were quite impressive that they used.” Jacob
“I was amazed when I saw the wonderful gardens of Hever Castle. This included topiary which is
where trees and bushes are trimmed into shapes eg. ducks, pigs and people. There were also statues
of people who lived there in the past. The visit really helped with our topic because it brought it to
life.” Benedict
“I liked going through the maze and we played ‘It’ in there. It was funny because every time you
turned a corner you didn’t know who was ‘It’ or who was being chased. “ Sienna
“We are learning about the Tudors and Hever Castle was Anne Boleyn’s home. We looked at Anne
Boleyn’s bedroom where the bed frame was. We also looked at her big book of prayers and she had a
special room where she must have gone to pray. “ Lois
“My favourite room was the library because it was a very calm and quiet place where Anne Boleyn
could read. When I walked in I felt really calm and think I know how Anne Boleyn must have felt in
that room.” Kiera
Year 5/6 Swimming Gala at Sovereign Centre
Last Friday Year 5 and 6 swimmers attended a gala for all the schools across Eastbourne. There were
8 schools who took part and the team swam fantastically and managed to finish second, narrowly losing
out to Ocklynge.
“I had a lot of fun and I am really proud of the team for coming second in the competition. It was a
great day.” Isla
“It was exciting to compete against other schools at the gala, some of which we have met before. We
were really happy with our achievement.” Charlie
Netball Tournament at Pevensey and Westham
“We came first which is awesome! It was a challenge to play in this tournament, we lost one game out
of 9 matches. We look forward to our next challenge!” Bronwen
“This term we have been training with Bronwen’s mum, Mrs Trowhill. She has been fantastic and
taught us lots of netball skills, which paid off in the tournament. She also gave us lifts to and from
the tournament. Thanks Mrs Trowhill, you are our star!.” Eleni
Eastbourne Half-Marathon
On Sunday Mrs Grout, Mr Cline and Mrs Cloutt completed the Eastbourne Half Marathon! After
months of training in the rain and the dark, they were able to get to the finish line. The race was a
challenge but worth it thanks to all the support they were given. Thank you to all those who cheered
them on and sponsored them. So far they have raised over £800 for the Ben McNicol Trust. If you
would still like to make a donation please visit http://www.justgiving.com/StJohnsSchool.
“Good on them all, they are a great team of staff and supporters at St John's - it is wonderful
to have this ongoing support for the trust. Please pass on our thanks to the wonderful team of staff
at St. John's Meads who ran and who supported the team in their participation in the half marathon. “

ST JOHN’S CHURCH FESTIVAL BROCHURE COMPETITION
Guidelines for entries: Entries must be submitted by Friday 27th March at 3pm; no exceptions!
Thank you for considering entering into the competition to design the artwork for St John’s Festival
2015. The festival takes place from the 5th to the 8th June and includes a very busy fete on Saturday
6th with lots of games, food, and fun! The festival is a really popular local event and we would love to
use artwork created by local children prominently throughout the festival posters, brochures,
and festival weekend. So, here are the details…The competition is open to all pupils at St John’s
Meads CE, St Andrew’s, Bede’s, Moira House, and children who attend any of the Sunday clubs at St
John’s church.
The theme for the festival is “Hope & Light” and there are three different passages from the
Bible reflecting this theme that should be used as inspiration. They are:
James 1: 17
Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down
from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. (The
Message translation)
Genesis 1: 1 - 4
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty, a formless mass
cloaked in darkness. And the Spirit of God was hovering over its surface. Then God said, "Let there
be light," and there was light. And God saw that it was good. (New Living Translation)
John 12: 46
I am Light that has come into the world so that all who believe in me won't have to stay any longer in
the dark. (The Message translation)
Please feel free to incorporate the passage you choose, or words from the passage into your
design, although it’s not a condition.
Designs should be A4 size and can use any media; paint, collage, pencil, photography…though
designs should be 2D.
Entries should be submitted with your name, your school and class number, and the Bible
passage you chose. There will be three winners chosen, one each from KS1, KS2, and KS3.
Winners will be announced soon after the Easter holidays so let the competition begin!
Entries need to be handed in to:
St John’s Church, St John’s Road, Eastbourne, BN20 7ND
