T
he addition to our community
centre will be 5 years old this
spring. Over that period we
have made many additions and improvements to provide events and
activities for the community. In the
past year we added a skate board
park, paved the Woodbine hockey
rink, replaced the basketball posts and court at Woodlands and made many smaller improvements to the
centre. This month I thought I would outline what improvements we are working on for this year and the
future. Our hockey rink and parking area lights at the
community centre are now over 20 years old and we
are planning to replace them this year. The centre is
getting busier so we are adding another bathroom to
the lower level. We never have enough storage space
so we plan to double the size of our garage. We are
looking into landscaping the skate park area and how
we can provide some sound abatement for the area.
Next year we will be converting some of our lower
area storage space into an additional meeting room
or activity area. In the future we will be looking at additional parking and community signage.

ASSOCIATION
Just a reminder that
Next event is for the big kids, the St. Paddy’s Dance on
March 21. Watch the Chronicle for details.
Watch for another family spaghetti dinner on April 12.
Unbeatable family price, bingo, prizes and a lot of fun.
So that covers events for youth, adults and families.
Come on out and take in some of these events.
If you haven’t got your community membership yet,
see the Chronicle for locations. We are close to the
one thousand mark and would like your support.

If you ask people in our area where they live, they say
Woodlands or Woodbine. So where does Woodcreek
come from? A little history lesson will give you the
answer.
Woodlands was established in 1976 and Woodbine 4
years later in 1980. The Woodlands Community Association was incorporated on May 21, 1980, and two
years later the Woodbine Community Association
was registered on October 19, 1982. In order to better serve the needs of the area, the Woodlands and
Woodbine Communities amalgamated on January
29, 1992 and the Community Association name was
changed to Woodcreek Community Association and
represents the 15,399 residents of both communities.
In 1987 a Community Centre building (approximately
1000 sq. Ft.) was built at 1991 Woodview Drive S. W.
In 2010 we added a 2500 sq. ft. addition with a full
basement. We now have a facility that can better
serve the needs of the community and provide a venue for meetings, banquets, dances, birthday parties,
you name it. A portion of the basement area provides
storage for our community groups.

CALGARY SENIOR
MEN’S SOFTBALL 55 +
Looking for men 55+ to join our league. No experience
necessary. We have three divisions and can accommodate all skill levels. At the end of April new players are
evaluated and teams are drafted.
The league plays at Triwood and Senator Patrick Burns,
one division plays in the day time, the other two play in
the evening. www.grandslamslopitch.com.
So when you hear the name WOODCREEK think both
of the communities.
A further point is that Woodcreek does have two
properties. Our main location is the Community Centre in Woodlands. We also have a Woodbine location
on Woodborough Road where we have tennis courts,
pickle ball courts, basketball hoop, skating rink and a
skate board park to be built in 2014. These are all part
of the Woodcreek Community Association.
One further organization we have in the community
is the Fish Creek Sports Association. They organize all
of the Woodcreek sporting activities. When you buy a
Woodcreek Community Association membership you
also become a member of Fish Creek Sports.

City of Calgary Community Tree Stewardship Program
coming to Woodcreek
The NeighbourWoods Residential Tree Planting Program is a volunteer tree stewardship initiative developed by The City of Calgary Parks to engage citizen
and community involvement in the replenishment,
growth and preservation of Calgary’s urban forest.
The urban forest includes all trees and shrubs growing in parks, river valleys, streets, roadways, and commercially and private lands, naturally occurring or
intentionally planted. The NeighbourWoods Program
was developed in 2007 in response to a council mandate to replenish and restore Calgary’s urban forest in
addition to educating Calgarians about the values of
trees.
Most people will readily admit the value of trees for
the aesthetic benefits they create and the shade they
provide, but trees are more than beautiful decorations. In an urban setting, trees can transform a landscape while improving the air we breathe, reducing
soil erosion and run-off, and providing habitat for
wildlife. Trees reduce home heating and cooling costs,
increase property value and improve the mental wellbeing of everyone around them. Trees reduce stress,
calm anxiety and help us reconnect with the natural

world. Trees can block or enhance scenic views, complement architecture, guide pedestrian traffic, buffer
street noise, and provide places for recreation. Due to
their size, trees are often thought of as belonging to
the whole community, regardless of actual ownership.
Over 100 years ago, the citizens of Calgary started
planting and protecting trees on residential streets.
William Pearce was instrumental in urging the City
to plant trees and develop parks along the Bow and
Elbow rivers as early as 1883 and envisioned Calgary
as an eventual city of trees. Citizens were encouraged to obtain and care for trees for private planting
and in 1894, with the co-operation of the CPR, native
trees were brought in from the mountains by railroad.
Ratepayers were advised that spruce trees could be
obtained for a cost of five cents each. In 1899, a railroad car of maple trees was ordered from Brandon,
Manitoba at a price of fifteen cents per tree to the
ratepayers.
With the advent of street tree planting, it became
necessary to pass a bylaw and in 1899, council passed
one of its earliest bylaws to protect the trees from
vandalism. In 1905, the board of trade again made
arrangements with the CPR to bring in spruce trees
from the mountains to sell to citizens for ten cents per
tree, double the price from 1894. This practice was repeated in 1913 by W.H. Reader (Reader Rock Garden).
Trees were so revered and planting trees was taken
so seriously that in the early 1900’s, Arbour Day was
considered a civic holiday with banks and other business institutions closed for the day.
As most of the early urban forest has perished due
to age and disease or is being removed for development, our current city council has the foresight to re-

plenish and repair it. The NeighbourWoods Program
was established to ensure future generations will
reap the benefits similar to the urban forest of the
past. Although the logistics and monetary values
have changed, the same concept of community tree
planting that was used over a century ago is being
revived.
At its heart, the NeighbourWoods program aims to
engage individuals and community associations to
take a stewardship role for the care and preservation
of Calgary’s urban forest. Since its inception in 2007,
the program has focussed on working with ten communities each year. Each community is given 100
trees and community members are invited to apply
to become Residential Tree Stewards of specific new
trees on their boulevards or back-of-walk area (city
owned property in front of their homes). Communities are chosen based on the health and condition
of the existing urban forest, community interest, and
tree planting opportunities in the community. Home
owners in these communities apply to the program
by calling 311 and applications are approved after
certain criteria are considered.
Once applications are approved, the home owner
becomes a Residential Tree Steward and works with
the City to choose the preferred tree species for their
site. Residential Tree Stewards are responsible for
planting the trees in pre-dug holes, contributing a
$30 per tree participation fee, commit to watering
and monitoring their sponsored tree(s) for five years.
All new trees are owned by The City and planted on
City property.
Residents of the participating communities are encouraged to volunteer with their Community Association to assist with promoting the program in
their community and planting day event planning
and implementation. For more information on the
NeighbourWoods Program, or to register to sponsor
a tree(s) by the March 31st deadline, please call 311
or visit www.calgary.ca/neighbourwoods. Contact
your Woodcreek Community Association at 403-2816112 or email [email protected] for more information
on the NeighbourWoods Program or volunteer opportunities in your community.

Skills Centre
Those of you who live in Woodcreek (the communities
of Woodlands and Woodbine) will have noticed a new
structure being built as an expansion to the William
Roper Hull School.
A major focus of Hull School is to prepare students to
live as contributing and productive adults when they
graduate. Unfortunately, many arrive at Hull lacking the
life skills necessary to build the foundation for a healthy
future. At Hull School, these essential skills are part of
the curriculum, including how to shop for and prepare
a healthy meal, how to budget and how to dress for,
present oneself at a job interview, and how to manage
one’s behaviour in various social contexts. To deliver this
program more effectively and impact an even larger
number of students, our 2,000 square foot addition –
the Work Experience and Life Skills Centre – is scheduled to open in May, 2015.
An expanded Work Experience and Life Skills program
will help ensure that each student leaving Hull School
has the necessary skills to care for themselves to their
best ability. The curriculum will focus on personal care,
behaviour management, résumé writing, job search
techniques, interview preparation, as well as time and
money management. Teachers will reinforce the importance of proper conduct in a job, being punctual,
well-groomed and socially appropriate, as they provide ongoing guidance to students in work experience
placements.
The Work Experience and Life Skills Centre will benefit
the next generation of young adults. In the long-term,
junior and senior high school students at Hull School
will build a solid foundation upon which to make wise
choices for themselves and conduct themselves more
successfully. We are helping our students become contributing members
of society. This will
lead to a stronger
and healthier future
for everyone.

The first day of spring is just around the corner on
March 20! This year we have been very fortunate to enjoy a relatively mild winter so far. Here’s hoping it will
continue, however I hope that you can still get out to
enjoy some tobogganing, skating and other winter activities before it all melts away.
February was a very important month in Scouting. ‘Robert Baden-Powell, the Founder of Scouting, was born
on February 22, 1857 in London, England. Members
of Scouting from around the world celebrate this date
as Baden-Powell Day. Canada celebrates Scout-Guide
Week from the Sunday before February 22 until the Sunday after. At this time, members of Scouts Canada and
Girl Guides of Canada plan and hold special activities to
promote our Movements. Scout-Guide Week 2015 takes
place from February 15 – 22.’ Woodcreek Scouts group
celebrated this special day with a Baden-Powell banquet night where the Venturers did an excellent job on
a power point presentation.
All of our sections have been busy and having a ton of
fun as usual.
The highlights from last month for the Beavers had to
be the great night making sock puppets and then taking turns putting on a puppet show. They enjoyed another fun weekend camp this time at the Calgary Zoo!
Building wooden bumble bees and race cars were other
highlights. Another recent family activity that was very
popular was a tobogganing day which thankfully was
warm and sunny.
The Cubs enjoyed a weekend dinosaur camp in Drumheller in February. They also enjoyed a side trip to visit
the Reptile World where they watched many of the reptiles feeding. The Cubs worked hard to earn their new
prehistoric badge. Another recent event was their Disability Awareness Night where they learned Braille and
‘signing’, and about the many challenges faced by the
disabled. Next they will be learning all about aboriginals
at an Aboriginal Awareness Night. A big exciting event
coming up for them is the annual cub car races.
30
The highlight for the Scouts in February had to be the
ski trip to Castle Mountain. Other recent activities they
enjoyed were laser tag, badge work nights, tobogganing and snowshoeing.
plan is in place. The Johnson’s have even been fortunate
enough to see a few youth graduate high school while
in their care; a significant milestone they were proud to
be a part of.
The Venturer group recently enjoyed a day at the Calgary Shooting Centre. They invited their friends from
the 207 St Patrick’s to attend for a couple of hours of
shooting hand revolvers and rifles. They joined the
Scouts and invited the 207 St Patrick’s group on the
weekend ski trip to Castle Mountain. This will have
been their 5th annual trip!
These experiences have proved rewarding not just for
Nancy and Mark but for their whole family. Their youngest daughter, now 23 years old, shared with Nancy that
growing up with foster children as part of their family
taught her to be more understanding, patient, as well as
accepting. “Each of these children have become a member of our family” says Nancy and to this day, they have
a number of their foster children come back to visit as
adults.
There is a very exciting event coming up this summer
that I would like to mention. The Canadian Pacific Jamboree is held every 4 years and participation is open to
all youth of Scout age who are registered members of
Scouts Canada. It will be held from July 11-18, 2015 in
Camp Barnard in Sooke, BC. We have approximately 6
youth, 2 Venturers, 3 leaders, and 2 advisors attending
so far. I will be posting more information on this wonderful camp adventure in the coming months. Here is
an excerpt from the website to give you a quick peek
at what they will enjoy. “Your Salish Sea Adventure begins with a stunning, scenic 95 minute BC Ferries voyage from the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, across the
Strait of Georgia and past the Gulf Islands to Swartz Bay
Ferry Terminal on Vancouver Island. You will travel south
along the Saanich Peninsula, where you’ll enjoy views of
the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca
to Victoria and then onto the west coast of the island
to the beautiful town of Sooke. Nestled between the
majestic old growth forests and awe-inspiring beaches
of the Pacific Ocean coastline, Sooke is renowned for its
rich cultural heritage. It offers unlimited opportunities
for outdoor adventures and unforgettable experiences,
a truly West Coast experience.”
If anyone has any bottles they would like to donate
to the group towards the Pacific Jamboree please call
Scouter Chris at 403-249-5848 anytime for pick up.
It Takes a Village
by Rayna Fudge
Any number of complex social issues can leave children
and youth unable to live at home. Enter Nancy Johnson
and her husband Mark who have been foster parents
for the past 14 years, having cared for over 65 children
in their home.
Children in their care have stayed for a couple of days to
a couple of years depending on the circumstances, with
Nancy and Mark providing each child with the support
they need until they are able to return home, are adopted into another family, or an alternative permanency
Over the year’s Nancy’s philosophy and reasons for
wanting to help have remained the same: “Mark and
I believe it takes a village to raise a child and we just
want to do our part.” Even though the youth and children in their care have come and gone, Nancy feels that
the connections formed last a lifetime. “I have often said
that when a child leaves, they leave a bit of themselves
with us, and take a bit of us with them.” Now that seems
like a fair trade.

Nine Tips
to Bring Your
Lost Pet Home
Warm spring weather brings an increase in lost pets.
At Calgary Humane Society, one of our roles is to make
sure lost pets find their way home! If your pet has gone
missing, here are a few tips:
1.DON’T PANIC! As scary as it is to find your pet missing, the most important thing you can do is remain
calm. Stop and take a few deep breaths. Examine the
situation and think about what may have happened.
Once you have some ideas, start making a plan. If your
pet has been gone for a very short time, it may make
sense to go looking and calling for them. If they’ve
been missing for a while, then calling friends to help
look and calling in lost reports might be a better plan.
2.Start making lost reports. When you call, provide as
much information as you can about where and when
your pet was lost and provide as much descriptive
information as you can. Was your pet wearing a collar? Do they have distinctive markings? What is their
microchip/tattoo number? These little details greatly
increase the chance that someone will correctly recognize your pet. Sending or posting good quality
photos of your pet will also help.
Places to send lost reports:
•Calgary Humane Society Animal Admissions – 403205-4455
•City of Calgary Animal Services – 311
•Kijiji/Craigs List/Local Buy/Sell websites
•Facebook/Twitter/social media (encourage others to
share)
•Social media has many local lost pet groups (Southern Alberta Pet Connection and YYC Pet Recovery are
two example of pages in Calgary)
•Contact smaller rescues in the city directly
3.Put out things to entice your pet home. Put food,
a favorite bed and other familiar objects out to help
tempt your pet back home. If your pet is skittish or
32
MARCH 2015 I Great News Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities
scared, renting or borrowing a live trap and putting
the items into the trap may help. Have somebody
keep an eye on these items to watch for your pet to
return.
4.Arrange a search party. Call friends, relatives and
neighbours to help search for your pet. Choose the
people that your pet is most familiar and friendly
with to go out and search. Ask the people who do not
know your pet as well to help with other jobs, like lost
report phone calls.
5.Create lost posters and hang them up. Include a
number that you can always be reached at (like a cell
phone) on the sign. Hang up the posters in the areas
that you think your pet might be, concentrating on
areas where lots of people will see the signs. Remember where you have signs so you can remove them
once your pet is home!
6.Keep updating your signs and lost reports. Update
lost reports and social media posts. Check that posters are still hanging up and readable.
7.Never give up hope. At Calgary Humane Society we
have seen some amazing reunions. We have reunited
pets with their family years, and even decades after
they went missing.
8.When your pet is home, thank everyone! Everybody loves a happy ending. Cancel lost reports, update social media postings and take down any lost
posters.
9.Stop this from happening again. Examine the situation behind how your pet went missing and evaluate
what could prevent a similar problem in future.
As always, prevention is the best medicine. Investing
in permanent identification (a tattoo or microchip) for
your pet and routinely checking your property to ensure your pet cannot go wandering are the best way to
protect your pet from loss.

St. Bonaventure is looking forward to an exciting
March with a number of happenings that are
representative of spirituality, citizenship, and
excellence.
The junior high band program will be attending a
very productive band camp at Camp Evergreen. What
a wonderful opportunity for our band students to
continue to develop their musical gifts and talents! A
special thanks to St. Bonaventure’s band teacher and
the parent volunteers. Please know that your assistance is greatly appreciated. The band program will
also perform at the Kiwanis Music Festival.
St. Bonaventure’s Spanish Program Open House
Evening and the Junior High Open House events
are expected to be very well attended as a number
of perspective families look to gain more information regarding the many programs that operate at St.
Bonaventure. Thank you to our dedicated teachers
and students who make these events a success.
Badminton season is now in full swing. Best of luck to
all of our players and coaches. Go Falcons! Our next
interscholastic activity will be flag football with tryouts commencing the week of April 13.
2.Make sure you send in all the required documents,
any delays will lengthen the time you wait to receive
benefits.
Employment
Insurance Tips
Alexander Shevalier
With the downturn in the economy and the large number of people being laid off here is some information on
applying for Employment Insurance (EI).
1.Apply for Employment Insurance right away, even
if you don’t have your record of employment, and if
you have received severance pay. You have 28 days to
apply for EI if you wait longer it will affect the length
of your benefits and the size of your weekly payments.
3.If you are denied benefits, submit a request for reconsideration within 30 days of the day you were informed
of the decision. People make mistakes, and you need
to make sure the decision made is a correct one. If it
is denied again, you can appeal to the Social Security
Tribunal. You have 30 days to appeal a decision.
4.There is a two-week waiting period where you will
not receive benefits.
5.You must be ready, willing and able to accept work.
6.You have to report every two weeks.
7.EI requires you to keep track of your job search activities. Your claim could be audited, and you must have
the job search handy. Two or more search activities
per business day is a minimum recommendation. You
will only need to present the job search if asked.
8.You must report any absences from Canada. You are
not eligible for benefits when you are outside of
Canada, with a few exceptions.
Spiritually, the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast along with our Ash Wednesday Celebration
marked the beginning of the Lenten season. Many
thanks to our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast parent volunteers along with the St. Bonaventure Parish
for continually demonstrating kindness and Catholicity.
Finally, St. Bonaventure continues to increase student
technology in an effort to improve student engagement and learning. The recent arrival of a new set of
Chromebooks will positively impact students at St.
Bonaventure. Outstanding!

Why: Why do aircrafts use “mayday” as their call for help?
Because: This comes from the French word m’aidez –
meaning “help me” – and is pronounced, approximately,
“mayday”.

Every weekday, over half a million Calgarians get around

Transit operators do so much more than just drive;
they ensure passenger safety, keep to a schedule,
check fares, give directions, remember stop requests,
all while manoeuvring large vehicles through unpredictable traffic, adverse weather and tight spaces.
Most do all this and more with a smile on their face.

Plan allows The City to maintain most of its services,
with some enhancements and new investments, along
with a continued corporate-wide movement toward
achieving our City’s long-term goals. The Citizen Summary will help you understand City budgets, property

March is Business Continuity
Month! Is your Business
Prepared?
Did you know that small businesses – defined as having fewer than 50 employees – account for 95 per cent
of all business activity in the province? In Calgary,
twice as many people are employed in small businesses than in large businesses. Small businesses represent almost 40 per cent of Calgary’s GDP.
Clearly, small business is BIG business! The Calgary
Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) wants to
help ensure the continued operation of Calgary businesses. With almost 64 per cent of Calgary businesses
reporting an interruption in the past two years and
evidence showing that up to 40 per cent of businesses
are not able to re-open after experiencing a large interruption, preparing for emergencies and disasters is
more important than ever.
There are many things a business owner can do to ensure their continued operation and success. Business
continuity is about understanding the risks that your
business could face, and developing plans or strategies to deal with disruptions. Risks can be natural
(such as flooding or severe storms), technological (IT,
telecommunications or supply chain disruption), or
human-caused (vandalism, cyber attack, sabotage).
Emergencies and disasters can occur without warning
but preparedness and planning can help reduce financial losses, keep your doors open, and protect your
staff and customers from harm.
Creating a business continuity plan has five steps:
1.Analyze your business
2.Assess the risks
3.Develop strategies
4.Make a plan
5.Exercise your plan
CEMA, in conjunction with the Calgary Chamber
of Commerce, has developed a business continuity handbook to help guide you through the steps of
building a plan. You can access the handbook and additional worksheets and templates at calgary.ca/cema.
You can also register your business for the Chamber’s
Emergency Business Contact database to receive information about emergencies that could impact your
business operations. Visit calgary.ca/cema or calgary
chamber.com for more information.

Response to Calgary’s Economic Situation
Our city’s local economy is driven by the oil and gas
industry, making our investments dependent on this
sector’s economic viability. As your City representative,
I am very much aware of how significant the sudden
drop in the price of oil has and is impacting citizens
and local businesses in Calgary (See my YouTube video
where I posed this question to City Manager Fielding
@ www.councillordiane.ca). In the ten short weeks
since City Council passed our four year business plan,
thousands of people have lost their jobs which in turn
is requiring a shift in how The City spends your money
and invests in future growth.
At this point in time, we believe we can stay the course
on the operating side of our organization and not
reduce services. However, it is a different story on the
capital side (see our four year business plan @ www.
calgary.ca/actionplan).
City Council must think hard about what we defer,
what we self-finance, and what we must debt-finance
going forward. In the third quarter Council will make
adjustments to the 2016 budget as required. City
Council and Administration are working closely
together as we closely monitor the impacts on a weekly
basis. We are all in this together. We are approaching
these impacts by constantly determining:
•
•
•
•
What the impacts of falling oil prices are on our
local economy and population growth
How the impacts of falling oil prices affect
operations and by what magnitude
What opportunities and vulnerabilities have
materialized
How our workforce is impacted
Our budget was constructed to accommodate a
population growth of approximately 25,000 people.
In 15 of the last 20 years, Calgary has seen more than

20,000 people move to our city. Our budget has been
established to meet this continued population growth
and can accommodate the range of population
changes that our city may see. We have also started a
new savings plan for both our operating and capital
budgets. This will ensure that much of the operating
and capital infrastructure can proceed, along with the
needed human resources to deliver.

Many Albertans in and around Calgary have expressed their support for the completion of the Calgary Ring
Road. There have also been concerns raised regarding the status of the project, given the current fiscal climate.
Alberta Transportation is committed to building the infrastructure needed to move goods and people safely
across the province as we support our growing economy and population. We continue tostwork with the
Government of Canada and the Tsuu T’ina Nation on completing the historic land transfer agreement that was
signed in the fall of 2013. The 2015-16 budget and capital planning process is underway, but final decisions
have yet to be made regarding specific transportation infrastructure projects that may be affected by the recent
drop in provincial revenue. The safety of Albertan’s travelling on our roads and highways has always been our

“RAMP” helps pay for home modifications to accommodate those with disabilities: grants are up to $7500 and
you may be eligible for up to $15,000 over a 10 year period. The following are eligible for a RAMP grant: all
wheelchair users, regardless of age, who meet program criteria (homeowner, tenants, and people living with
family); Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have lived in Alberta for 90 continuous days and have a
valid Health Number; aboriginal people living off- and on-reserve; people with multiple sclerosis, muscular
dystrophy, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), non-recovering stroke
victim, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, spina bifida, and/or spinal cord injuries; seniors aged 65+ who
are using a wheelchair or a or a 4-wheel walker on an ongoing basis. For more, please call Alberta Human
Services: 1-877-427-5760.

Condominiums: thoughtful changes will protect
consumers and support continued industry growth.
The Condominium Property Amendment Act passed in
the legislature in December; and it will give Albertan/s
greater confidence in how condominiums are bought,
sold, governed, and operated. If you live in a condo, or
plan to buy one, you will benefit from these changes.
The responsibilities of developers will be clarified,
emphasizing responsible business practices; and
you will have access to more information including
financial details at the time of purchase. The way
your condo boards are governed will be enhanced,
and penalties for offenses will be stronger. A new
condominium dispute tribunal will provide owners
and condo boards a way of settling disputes outside
the court system; and new training and standards will
be set for condominium managers. In short, the quality
of life in condominium developments throughout
Alberta is going to improve, thanks in large part to the
input of over 4000 owners, developers, condo boards,
and the general public during extensive consultation.
Their message was clear: our condo market is growing,
and its laws needed an overhaul to keep up. More
than 88,000 condo units have been built in Alberta
in the last 10 years, and they make up roughly 20%
of homes sold in Alberta each year. Albertan’s will
continue to have a say in how this important housing
sector is governed. The gov’t will soon begin creating
new regulations to support several of the new pieces
of legislation, including the dispute tribunal, and
condo manager training. Stakeholders will be invited
to provide input on this key phase in the evolution of
the Condominium Property Act. For more, please visit

Official Statistics Provide Interesting Insights Into Life
in Alberta
Alberta’s population grew by 3.5% in 2013—triple the
national average—surpassing the four million mark
for the first time. A newborn baby girl in Alberta is expected to live for nearly 84 years on average, and newborn boys are expected to live for almost 80 years. The
average monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment
ranges from $739 in Medicine Hat to $2,061 in Fort McMurray. About 75% of Alberta’s high school students
graduated within three years of entering Grade 10, and
almost 82% within five years--a notable improvement
since 2004-05. Alberta workers enjoyed the highest average weekly earnings ($1,108.01) in 2013: 22% above
the national average. During the past decade, Alberta
produced about one-third of the nation’s wheat, slightly
more than one-third of the canola crop, and almost half
of the barley crop. In 2013, almost half of Albertan’s
who volunteered chose to contribute to sports and recreation activities by coaching a team or by officiating or
organizing sporting and recreational events. In 2013-14,
9 out of 10 Albertan’s attended arts events or participated in arts activities. For more, please visit: officialstats.
