COMMANDERS MESSAGE ---------------------------------------------- Thomas Smith
Time is flying by, and before you know it, time for
nominations of officers will be upon us. To all of the
snowbirds heading home, please let us know if you
are aware of anyone that would like to run for an office.
Our membership is doing great with all of our new
members and transfers. Our Post has come a long
way, and all members should feel proud to be a part
of our team. Without your continued patronage, we
couldn’t have done it. Business has been great and I
would like to thank all of the workers and volunteers
for all their hard work . . .THANK YOU! We have
ordered some new kitchen equipment to help the
kitchen run more efficiently. Some of our equipment
was outdated. The new equipment should help a lot.
The Outpost is going to be leased to a group
named the “Veteran’s Alliance Program”. Their
mission is to help veterans with Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder and other combat related problems. They
are trying for a Grand Opening on Memorial Day.
Once they receive their 501C status the lease will
become official. The Legion continues to pay all bills
and taxes until they are up and running. This is a
wonderful program, put together by veterans to help
other veterans. If anyone would like to volunteer, they
can use the help.
I would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for
sending out over 1000 Valentine cards to Bay Pines
Nursing Home. The veterans received the Valentines
on their food trays. What a nice way to put a smile on
the faces of these sick veterans. The ladies also put
on a Chinese Auction that went very well. Everyone
had a wonderful time and the proceeds will be put
back into the community. Thanks to Doris Clark and
the Ladies Auxiliary for supplying bedding (sheets &
blankets) to the veterans home. I’m sure they were
appreciated during the recent cold spell.
I would also like to congratulate Jerry Clark for
being appointed to the American Legion National
Legislation Committee in Washington DC.
Congratulation Jerry!
I want to let everyone know that I am looking to
put the Post in the running for the “National Post
Excellence Award”. We meet all of the qualifications
for this award, so let’s get recognized for all of our
hard work. We have already been presented the top
award for our donation to the Department
Commanders Breast Cancer Awareness Drive. The
award was presented to Post 173 by Dept.
Commander, Jay Conti. We received a very nice
plaque.
If our northern friends would like to have the
newsletter mailed to them after they have returned
home, see the form in this newsletter. For a cost of
$10.00 we will mail it to you. We will miss you all,
have a safe trip and we will see you next year.
I continue to look forward to working with the Sons
of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary. We
can do great things working together as a team.
Thanks for all of your assistance. Remember, my door
is always open if anyone needs anything.
Thank You
Thomas Smith,
Commander

ADJUTANTS MESSAGE------------------------------------------------ Deb Nowakowski
Our membership is about 89%. This is a
typical percentage for this time of year, but we
would really like to achieve 100%. This can be
met not only through renewals, but also with new
members. Do you know veteran who is not an
American Legion member yet? Encourage them
to join our Post. Let them know the many fun
activities we have to offer, and let’s not forget
our wonder and reasonably priced meals! There
are many reasons to be a member, but
sometimes a veteran doesn’t know what all the
American Legion can offer to them.
Warmer weather is nearly her. Happy Spring
to all of you!
Debra Nowakowski

1ST VICE PRESIDENT MESSAGE ................................. Marlene Ungerleider
As the Spring Season approaches, we look
forward to completing several more program
projects. Such as Girls State, Bay Pines Picnic,
School Essay Contest and another donation
project for Steps to Recover.
We also can look back on the year with pride
as we successfully helped so many veterans and
community families and children. This was made
possible due to the American Legion
Legionnaires, S.A.L. members and Auxiliary
Volunteers working as a family. A special thank
you also goes to our guests of Post #173 for their
generous donations.
Remember that March is Female Veteran
Month. If you know one - please take a moment
to say thank you for their service.
Keep up the great work you’ve been doing!
Yours in Service

AUXILIARY PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ....................................... Doris Clark
Time is passing quickly and per Marlene’s
message we have several unfinished projects to
complete.
However, we are confident all will be
accomplished with the continued support of our
Post Commander, Tom, SAL Commander, Rob
and our members.
Our membership stands at 91% and our goal
of 100% can be reached soon by the renewals
to be sent A.S.A.P. Renewal post cards reminding
our members to do so will be in the mail this week.
Renewals must be in now or you will loose
benefits. I might add, we have commitments to
be met and need the funds.
We are proud to say several new members
have been volunteering and helped with the
Valentine Party and thanks to Donna Charlton’s
fund raising ability it was another success.
Thanks to those who took the time to
purchase and sign the 1,179 Valentine’s I
delivered to the C.W. Young V.A. Facility. Our
Auxiliary representative there couldn’t believe our
effort and was pleased to present the Valentines
to the hospitalized veterans.
The value of the bedding for “Steps to
Recovery” was $1,068. Our special thanks to the
supporters of this project.

Saint Patrick’s Day
According to legend, Saint Patrick used the
three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity
to Irish pagans
St. Patrick’s Day
in the United States
Saint Patrick’s Day, while not a legal holiday
anywhere in the United States, is nonetheless
widely recognised and celebrated throughout the
country. It is observed as a celebration of Irish
and Irish American culture. Celebrations include
prominent displays of the colour green, eating
and drinking, religious observances, and
numerous parades. The holiday has been
celebrated on the North American continent since
the late eighteenth century.
Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint
Patrick, is a cultural and religious holiday
celebrated on 17 March. It is named after Saint
Patrick (c.AD 385–461), the most commonly
recognised of the patron saints of Ireland.
Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official
Christian feast day in the early seventeenth
century and is observed by the Catholic Church,
the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox
Church and Lutheran Church. The day
commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of
Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrates the
heritage and culture of the Irish in general.
Celebrations generally involve public parades
and festivals and the wearing of green attire or
shamrocks.Christians also attend church
services, and the Lenten restrictions on eating
and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which
has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s
tradition of alcohol consumption.
Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the
Republic of Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador
and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by
the Irish diaspora around the world; especially in
Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina,
Australia and New Zealand.
