We walked, shuffled, knelt, stumbled,
shivered, prayed and bonded as Catholics.
We were humbled. We endured a small
hardship compared to what our Lord and
Savior did for each of us more than 2,000
years ago. We experienced the incredible
weight of a heavy wooden cross like the
one Jesus had to drag on His way to die
for each of us. But we had it easy-we took
turns carrying the cross, we got to rest
when we were tired. We had not been
whipped and scourged prior to our journey. We did not have to endure a crown
of thorns pounded into our skulls before
we began. None of us had to wipe sweat
and blood out of our eyes. We were not
ridiculed or made fun of. We had it easy.
How goes our personal Lenten journey of
praying, fasting and alms-giving? Are we
finding insights in the little black Lenten
prayer book? Have we reflected on the
amazing gift of Everlasting Life that Jesus
made possible for each of us? Have we
made a commitment to give something up,

While our Lenten journey continues, I
pray that you can experience something
profound this Lent like I did while carrying the heavy wooden cross at the Outdoor
Stations at St Mary of the Lake. May our
yearning for Spring and warmer weather
be exceeded by our yearning for Jesus this
Easter.
May the Peace of Christ be with you.

Patients of all ages need blood daily. It is available to
them only through the generosity of volunteer blood
donors like you.
4th Sunday of Lent
Hungering for Peace
We journey with CRS Rice Bowl to Lebanon to be
present to a people who themselves are on a journey. Here we meet a family of Syrian refugees, a
family perhaps not so unlike our own. We are challenged through our almsgiving this week to reach out
to those who are forced to flee their homes, who are
seeking shelter in a land of peace.
Option for the Poor
Jesus tells us to care for those who are most in need
in the world. He reminds us of our Christian duty to
give a voice to those who go unheard and to help
those who are most vulnerable.

We Welcome Our Elect….
Hi! I am Allison Guttman.
I am a Physical Therapist and grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and have been involved with the Catholic Church & faith ever since I can remember. I went to church on Sundays with my sister & grandparents with the highlight being a doughnut & breakfast after mass. Like most school-aged kids I went
to CCD and went through all the steps of religious life until High School where I surpassed confirmation for playing sports. I then went to The University of Toledo then Physical Therapy school at Texas
Tech and while I always had intentions to go to mass, I could always find something that seemed more
“important” to do. When in Texas I would go to mass on occasion and found peace with attending
mass alone. I found I could relate to the service and while I was thousands of miles from home, I felt
the warmth of the community around me. After meeting Brent, and realizing that I really wanted to
spend some serious time with this guy, we started to talk about faith, religion & the “big” important
things in life. While I haven't always had the strongest roots in my faith I always knew I wanted to
have a family rich in the Catholic faith. I see what my grandparents have and want
that for my family as well. It has been a really rewarding experience to join St.
James and the RCIA program here, Brent & I have both found a sense of community and family in the group which has made our move to Arlington Heights easier. I
am excited to finally become a confirmed member of the Catholic Church and start
married life with Brent with a strong & rich Catholic faith.
My name is Brent Bell and I grew up in Rock Falls, IL. I attended Como Baptist Church, where I
was baptized and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Since then, I have focused more on my studies at Illinois State University (BS in Accounting and Finance) and Texas Tech University (MS in Personal Financial Planning) than I have my faith. Fortunately, while in Texas, God sent me on the right
path to meeting my beautiful fiancée, Allison Guttman. Allison and I have since moved to Arlington
Heights where we each practice in our field of studies and regularly attend 8:30 a.m. mass on Sundays
at St. James. Because of Allison, I have strengthened my faith in God, and God has strengthened our
love for each other as I go through the conversion process of becoming Catholic. It was our goal to find
a common ground and attend church together as a married couple and what better way of starting our
marriage than by making Allison happy and converting to Catholicism. As the saying goes, happy wife
equals happy life. My sponsor is Allison’s Papa, but with him living in Michigan, I have had the honor
of Rich Nagengast filling in and sharing his story with me as we have bonded thoroughly and have become good friends. I never expected RCIA to enrich me with what I have today. I expected RCIA to
be a class where I learned the basics and moved on. What RCIA has actually done
for me is welcome me to the church with open arms, educate me, build lasting relationships for many years to come, and open my heart even more to God and others
around me.
