Ellis ’13 www.catholichigh.org | 3 Letter from the President Gene Tullier Dear Friends, In 1818, even before the founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Father André Coindre, founder of the Brothers’ religious community, wrote a Prospectus, Pieux Secours, in which he outlined his vision of an initiative to address the pressing needs of the young boys in Lyon, France. Significantly, this prospectus was not addressed to members of any religious community. Rather, it was addressed to the business and civic leaders. Coindre had an intuitive understanding that to achieve any great vision, it was necessary to build a broad coalition of support that included not just those directly involved in the work, but also a much wider network of friends who believed in the vision. Such a coalition, Coindre understood, built the capacity to actualize his vision and ultimately to meet the pressing needs of the young people in Lyon during his day. Catholic High School, today, is a direct heir of Father Coindre and his vision for addressing the pressing needs of young people. Today, unlike in Coindre’s time, many young people enjoy relative affluence and opportunity. Catholic High School provides an environment that challenges these young people to think and act beyond their self-interest, an environment permeated by Gospel values that calls young people to lives of faith and service. No doubt, this is as critical a need in our contemporary times as were the needs to which Coindre responded in his day. As was the case in Coindre’s day, however, no important vision or work that truly serves the critical needs of young people can be achieved without a broad coalition of friends who believe in that vision. Thankfully, Catholic High School has such a group—its alumni. Today, there are nearly 9,000 living Catholic High School alumni. Some of these men are living and working in more than 20 countries around the world. Many others are scattered across the United States, but a majority remain in or near the Baton Rouge community. What all these men have in common is that they grew up here. As students at CHS, they’ve learned 4 | March 2015 the value of hard work and consistent effort. They were formed in the Gospel values of respect for life, acceptance of diversity and genuine compassion for all, but especially for those in great need. I have no doubt that these men continue to live the qualities they learned at CHS in such a way that deeply enriches their families and communities. The CHS Alumni Association is very much like the group of civic and business leaders that André Coindre wrote to in his Prospectus in 1818. The CHS Alumni Association has a clear and important role as expressed in its Mission Statement, “. . . to strengthen our commitment to our school, renew and foster the bonds of friendship, promote continued involvement of graduates and further the Gospel values taught by word and example by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.” I call all CHS Alumni to build an even stronger alumni network that helps to further the important mission of Catholic High School. If you are not already actively involved with the CHS Alumni Online Community, you can register without charge on our website at www.catholichigh.org. Through this online portal, you can connect with classmates, be informed of upcoming alumni events and easily access the CHS website. The motto of the CHS Alumni Association is “It’s More Than 4; It’s A Lifetime!” How true that is. Those of us working daily at CHS to further Coindre’s vision today want and need you as a part of a wide network of friends who truly believe in the value of this work. Thanks for your willingness to be an alumni partner in this work throughout your lifetime. Sincerely, Gerald E. The CHS community dedicated the Habitat for Humanity home on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015. Warrick Dunn ’93 and Warrick Dunn Charities, Inc. (WDC) partnered with CHS and Habitat for Humanity to provide the Gant family’s down payment and home furnishings. When the Gant family arrived at their new home for the dedication, they received the surprise of a lifetime. Dunn met Gant and his two sons, A’Niaje (16) and Chanse (12), as they arrived at their home on Mississippi Street. WDC and CHS volunteers spent countless hours to completely fill the home. From furniture to groceries, WDC made certain that the Gant family could move in without any worries of stocking their home. The pantry and refrigerator were fully stocked by Piggly Wiggly Grocery Stores. “Everything and everyone involved are very much appreciated. It is more than words can express. Just the joy of being able to share this amongst my friends and family make the effort and dedication well worth it. My family and friends are enjoying our new home,” commented Gant. Catholic High School wrapped up the school sponsored Habitat for Humanity Build on Oct. 5, 2014. The two-year process included raising money to fund the house followed by building the house with CHS students, faculty, staff, alumni and volunteers. Catholic High School presented Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge Lynn Clark a check for $50,000 to fund a CHS Habitat for Humanity build after a Thanksgiving school Mass held on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. In 2011, with the support of the student body, Catholic High School announced it would sponsor and build a Habitat for Humanity House on its own. CHS Academic Assistant Principal Tom Eldringhoff and CHS Faculty member Greg Sollie led the student-initiated project. The cost to build a Habitat House is $75,000. The Catholic High student body committed to raise $50,000 and Habitat would pay the remaining $25,000. The CHS community embraced the Habitat for Humanity Build and has held dances, candy sales, tailgates, pep rallies, talent shows and restaurant nights to help fully fund this endeavor. In November 2013, CHS students raised the final $26,000 needed to fund the Habitat home during a one week Habitat for Humanity celebration. This amount, combined with the gifts of generous donors as well as the money raised over the previous two years, propelled CHS to the $50,000 needed for their own Habitat Build. “I grew up working construction with my dad, so I love any opportunity to work with my hands. I enjoy the habitat builds because of two reasons: it makes me appreciate the work that goes into building a house and it reminds me of how fortunate I am to have a home. Not everyone can say that they have a home of their own, and I thank God every day that I have a home to call my own,” commented Brett Vidrine ’15. His level of concern for his students and colleagues, his love of his subject, for teaching and Catholic High are what we all aspire to. He often spoke about waking up to go have fun, not go to work. He was a great friend and colleague, much loved and sorely missed,” commented CHS faculty member and friend Vic Caffarel. Sollie taught physics at CHS for the past 18 years. He was the Science Department Chairperson, Robotics Club moderator, Science Club moderator, Astronomy Club moderator and oversaw all landscaping on campus. For the last 18 years, Sollie also organized the annual CHS/SJA Washington, D.C. trip during the Thanksgiving holidays. One project that Sollie felt very passionate about was working with the Habitat for Humanity builds. Catholic High recently sponsored a Habitat build for a local family. When it was time for construction, Sollie was always the first person on site and the last to leave. The loss of this incredible man has had an enormous impact on the Catholic High School community. There were approximately 200 attendees in the CHS gym. These designated endowed scholarships have been established to honor the legacy and characteristics of individuals most meaningful to them. The Mildred Creaghan Robichaux and Gertrude Creaghan Endowed Scholarship in honor of Brother Carl Evans, SC This scholarship was established by twin brothers, Dr. Bob Robichaux ’62 and Jack Robichaux ’62, in the names of their mother and aunt who were career high school teachers and whose sacrifices permitted the brothers to attend Catholic High School. It is also in honor of Brother Carl Evans, SC, their biology and religion teacher at CHS and lifelong friend who served as a role model, educator and mentor and whose personal involvement in their lives contributed greatly to their success as Catholic family men and professionals. Students receiving this award must have high moral character, be involved in service to others and value their Catholic education as paramount. This year’s recipients are Jonathan Herin ’18 and Michael DeSoto ’17. The F. Wayne Frey ’71 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Created by Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Frey Jr. and family, The F. Wayne Frey ’71 Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors the memory and genuine qualities, characteristics and accomplishments of Frey. In recognition of Frey’s outstanding achievements in athletics and academics and most of all in personal character, Cameron Carpenter ’17 is this year’s recipient of the F. Wayne Frey Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Carpenter is recognized for his leadership and outstanding ethical values as judged by the CHS faculty, and who, throughout his academic career, has excelled in his academic achievements as documented by GPA and academic class standing. The Brother Adrian Gaudin, SC Scribe Scholarship Serving as CHS principal from 1976-1980, this award honors Brother Adrian Gaudin, SC’s journalistic passion and his commitment to excellence in communication and publication. Josh Bishop ’15 receives this award for his leadership with the Bearly Published staff thanks to the generosity of Mr. Louis Gaudin and his wife Fran, who established this criteria-based award in honor of his brother, Adrian. Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the CHS criteria-based endowed scholarships. Catholic High School is grateful to all of our alumni and friends for supporting the legacy and mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart through participation in the CHS Endowed Scholarship 14 | March 2015 Jonathan Herin ’18 Michael DeSoto ’17 Cameron Carpenter ’17 Josh Bishop ’15 Program. Brother Ray Hebert, SC made the courageous decision to relocate to Chicago to assist Brother Ronald Talbot, SC and Brother Irenêe Chabot, SC, from the New England area with this formation. The Novitiate will be staffed by three Brothers in order to provide a viable local community and formation for men joining the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. One man, Lincoln Sigwald, began the program in January and will hopefully be joined by others soon. “Brother Ray’s absence will create a void at Catholic High. He is not only an outstanding counselor to our students, but he is a role model for all of us through his kindness, spirituality and visible presence as a Brother of the Sacred Heart. The loss will be profound. However, I hope we can all be joyful for Brother Ray’s ‘yes’ to answer the call. I can think of no one better to help with the formation of future Brothers,” commented CHS Principal Lisa Harvey. Brother Ray’s responsibility in Chicago will be to help establish their residence on the third floor of a rectory. Their initial formation program involves a period of discernment, a six-month postulancy, a formal stage in religious formation programs, a request for admission into the Novitiate and acceptance (Sigwald has written his 16 | March 2015 request and was accepted at a special Mass in New Orleans on Sunday, January 25), followed by the Novitiate program. The Novitiate program is an inter-community program with men and women interested in continued discernment of a religious vocation in various institutes. Since there are few people entering religious life, it has been effective to pool resources and sponsor inter-community programs to provide numbers and better discussions and personal growth. Sigwald will have classes each Tuesday at the SVD (Society of the Divine Word) facility in Techny, Ill., close to Chicago. Once a month those classes will continue overnight and into Wednesday. Brother Ray will attend the classes with Sigwald and participate in the discussions. They will also have lectures in their home on various topics pertaining to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart (history, Rule of Life, vows, apostolate, documents, etc.). “Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives and for trusting me with some of your concerns. Those who wish to contact me can use my regular CHS email address. I promise to remember you in prayer. I feel somewhat like Abraham being called at an advanced age to leave his surroundings and going to a new place; I pray that my faith will be inspired by his and I look forward to the new challenges I will have. My prayer for each of you is that you be open to God working in you and through you,” commented Brother Ray. Catholic High School ARCHIVES Catholic High School is most fortunate to continue to receive items from Alumni for the Archives. Gerald H. (Jerry) Marchand ’49 starred in football, baseball and basketball while at Catholic High School. Marchand passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014, at the age of 83. Linda Marchand, his spouse of 50 years, donated photos and articles of her husband to the Archives. The collection includes action photos of Marchand when he played in all three sports, programs from award ceremonies and graduation and photos from social events. The collection also includes photos of mothers of students who helped in the cafeteria during the years he was a student. Paul M. Hebert Jr. ’64, sent in a copy of the The Golden Bear. It is Volume 10, Number 1, dated Oct. 16, 1945. A friend of his, who is a building contractor, found it in the wall of a house he was renovating. Interestingly, there was an article in the paper announcing the return of Paul’s father, Dr. Paul M. Hebert ’24, to the LSU Law School after a military leave. He resumed his duties as head of the Law Department and dean of the law school. He was also honored as a member of the Catholic High School Hall of Fame in 1971. Rosemary Crifasi Orr, sister of Brother Eldon Crifasi, SC ’39, donated a copy of a brochure from the 1949-1950 school year. The pamphlet included information about registration instructions, fees, band, spiritual organizations, cafeteria and regulations and discipline. Brother Benedict Gaudin, SC served as principal that year and continued in that role until May of 1954. Orr also contributed a football program from the Catholic By Margie Alexander High vs. Istrouma High game played on Wednesday, November 24, 1948, (Marchand played in that game). Anne Felice Fourrier donated her dad’s St. Vincent’s Academy diploma dated June 14, 1928. Her dad was Dr. Daniel J. Fourrier ’28—he was one of nine in the graduating class that year. She also gave the Archives class photos, the commencement program, graduation invitations and various newspaper articles in which Fourrier was featured. The latest items donated to the Archives are a letter jacket and three copies of the Bruin for years 1963, 1964 and 1965. Donald and Helene Baudouin donated these items that belonged to their son, D. Michael Baudouin Jr. ’65. Patricia Catanzaro and her husband, Joe, assisted with these memoirs. CHS appreciates these items which have been added to the collection. Anyone who has memoirs for the Catholic High Archives can contact Margie Alexander at (225) 381-9114 or at [email protected]. Always remember, a Forever Archive Donation would be for you to name Catholic High School in your will. Anyone interested in this type of gift can contact Alexander at (225) 381-9114. www.catholichigh.org | 17 The E.J. and Marjory B. Ourso Family Foundation By Margie Alexander SC. Ourso went on to major in journalism and English literature at LSU. After three-and-a-half years, he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army where he served in the European theater and was an artillery officer at the Battle of the Bulge under General George Patton. When he returned from the war he married Marjory Barbier. They are the parents of seven children. The Oursos started Security Industrial Insurance in 1948 with $10,000 capital and the company was sold in 1996 in a deal valued at $195 million. In addition to the insurance venture, Ourso acquired 56 insurance companies, funeral homes, cemeteries and flower shops. The Baton Rouge Business Report named Ourso Entrepreneur of the Year in 1989. In 1996, he was named Master Entrepreneur of the Year for Louisiana, Mississippi and the Alabama Gulf Coast. He sold his holdings in Security Industrial and founded a management company to administer proceeds from that sale. The Ourso’s formed The E.J. and Marjory B. Ourso Family Foundation which is administered by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. In 1996, the Ourso’s pledged a significant gift to the LSU College of Business Administration. The college was renamed the E.J. Ourso College of Business Administration in his honor and the Marjory B. Ourso Center for Excellence in Teaching was established. The Ourso’s shared their prosperity with their community and have donated millions to local charities. The impact of their philanthropy is far-reaching and it has benefited Catholic High School and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in tangible ways. Jesse Arboneaux, Ourso’s business manager for more than 30 years and now president and CEO of the Foundation, described him as “a very generous man with a special affinity toward the religious.” Mr. Ourso passed away on Dec. 18, 2005, in New Orleans. Included in those names is Brother Bernon Walsh, SC. His memory still remains strong in those who knew him. For Frank Vicari ’74, Brother Bernon’s friendship has a special place in his heart. As a ninth grader in the fall of 1970, Vicari was placed in Brother Bernon’s typing class. Shortly after school began, while in typing class, Vicari found himself in a physical altercation initiated by another student. Brother Bernon had walked out of the room, but apparently had seen enough to know what had occurred. Brother Bernon sent the other student to Principal Brother Donnan Berry, SC. However, Brother Bernon simply told Vicari to meet him after school by the Brothers’ residence. Vicari was terrified – he had just started CHS and now was going to be kicked out. He kept saying to himself, “My mother is going to kill me!” When he arrived at the Brothers’ residence, he found Brother Bernon waiting for him dressed in his customary black robe holding two pairs of boxing gloves. Vicari was somewhat dumbfounded as Brother Bernon told him that he had a good right cross and he was going to teach him how to box. Unbeknownst to him, Brother Bernon was a former boxer who had a passion for the sport. While stationed at Catholic High in the 1930s, Brother Bernon served as a boxing coach for the CHS Boxing Team. Brother Bernon gave Vicari the boxing gloves and removed his robe to unveil his boxing shorts and athletic undershirt. Brother Bernon then instructed Vicari to hit him. Vicari considered himself in a much superior position to Brother Bernen and had no intention of hitting him. After some coaxing, Brother Bernon convinced Vicari to hit him and assured Vicari that Vicari would not hurt him. Every time he would attempt to hit Brother Photo courtsey of the 1970 Bruin. Brother Bernon Walsh, SC, teaching in the language laboratory in 1970. Bernon, Brother would jab and he was unable to get a glove on Brother Bernon. “In the first week, I maybe hit him two or three times. He would keep jabbing and punching and I could barely hold my gloves up. I finally told Brother Bernon that I simply couldn’t keep my arms up,” said Vacari. “It’s taking you a while to learn but you are using 20 ounce gloves,” said Brother Bernon. Vicari laughingly recalled that Brother Bernon was using much lighter gloves while he was having trouble with the heavier gloves. “With the lighter gloves, I was eventually able to get a few punches in but the ratio of punches was probably 100-to-1 in favor of Brother Bernon,” said Vicari. “I have tremendous love and respect for Brother Bernon. He never came across as someone with a boxing background. He had an awe about him that you had to respect. I can still recall him walking up behind me in typing class, looking over my shoulder and telling me, ‘the object is to type something legible. Do it again!’ I will never forget the interest Brother Bernon had in me as a student and I treasured his friendship,” recalled Vicari.
