We are planning a fun-filled evening of sampling various wild game, fish, and some other unique surprises. Domestic food will also be available for the less adventurous. We anticipate this to be an evening of fun and fellowship for couples and singles alike. There will be a raffle table and Chinese auction along with a number of items for the female gender. If weather allows, we will again be holding the annual fishing tournament in the pond; someone will go home with a $100 dollar bill and bragging rights. The event will be held at the Holland Fish & Game Club with doors opening at 6:00 pm. This evening is open to the public and membership is not necessary. The cost to enjoy this evening is $15 per person. Upon receipt of your check, your name will be entered on our master list, which will be checked upon your arrival at the door. Due to recent state laws, we can no longer sell beer and wine. If you desire beer or wine, please bring your own. Water, pop, and coffee will be provided. So we are over 90 years old. Many times I have been asked by a potential member, why should I join the Holland Fish and Game Club? What will it ddo for me? The simple answer is if you enjoy hunting and fishing and the conservation of our natural resources, and the teaching of our youth about the Great Out of Doors, and service to the community, and the commerodity of all this, then the Holland Fish & game Club is for you. My first experience with the Holland Fish & Game Club was in 1940. A notice had been placed in the newspaper that the Holland Fish & Game Club was placing a stone monument at the corner of 136th Ave and Van Buren Street to commerate the first planting of pheasants in Michigan in 1895. For many years after that dedication of the monument in 1940 the Holland Fish & Game Club raised and released pheasants to aid in the creation of much enjoyable hunting. That monument at the corner of 136th & Van Buren still stands today. In early 1980 the board of directors of the club began a discussion of the lake access and public launch sites on Lake Macatawa. The board did a complete study of the area and determined that a large piece of property owned by Mrs. Dunton would be an ideal place for a boat launch. The board decided that Mr. Gord Veurink and Mr. Charley Overbeek should attempt to contact Mrs. Dunton to see if she would be interested in a launch site on her property. It of course was all up to Mrs. Dunton because the Holland Fish & Game Club had no money to purchase the property. And so to make it happen she was asked to donate the property. After much discussion and the promise to name the park Dunton Park, Mrs. Dunton graciously gave her approval to donate the property. So now it was time to construct a launch site. That is when Mr. Gary Brewer of Brewers Coal Dock stepped forward and said I will donate the launch site. So under the guidance of Mr. Mike Miedema and Mr. Gary Brewer and much help from the Holland Township Board the launch sire became a reality. A large boulder placed by the Holland Fish & Game Club with a plague in gratitude for the launch site construction by Mr. Gary Brewer still stands at the site. But one thing soon became a reality to the board that reality was that the club did not have sufficient funds to create the kind of park that the property and Mrs. Dunton deserved. The Holland Township Board had been very active in our early development and had expressed much interest in the park. So as a final result and through the graciousness of Mrs. Dunton, Holland Township is the owner of the park and has done a fabulous job of developing, expanding and maintaining it. The Holland Fish & Game Club got the whole ball rolling and the whole community is receiving the benefits. Word came to the Holland Fish & game Club that the Snellers lake front property located right next to the DNR launch on Ottawa Beach Road was being put up for sale. What an opportunity for the DNR to expand their terribly crowded launch site. Our first call was to the DNR to determine if they had any interest in obtaining the property. Their answer was yes! The Holland Fish & Game Club negotiator began the project of negotiating a contract for the sale of the property. After much negotiating there was still a sizable sum between what the Snellers would accept and what the DNR could pay. The Holland Fish & Game Club and Wildlife Unlimited each stepped forward with sizeable donations and the deal was completed. With the expansion of the launch site came a new problem, not sufficient parking. Cars and trailers were parked along Ottawa beach road and adjoining streets. A call to the DNR informed us that yes they realized the problem and the safety issues and they did plan to develop the parking lot on DNR property across Ottawa Beach Road. The money had been appropriated for the installation of the parking lot, but the holdup was that the DNR refused the bid for the removal of the 300 trees because it came in way above their budgeted amount. We immediately made the proposal to the DNR that the Fish & Game Club would take down the trees and remove all the wood that was burnable, leaving only the small brush and stumps if they would start construction of the parking lot. As soon as we finished, their replay was yes, we will. We put out the word to our members that we needed all hands on deck with chain saws, axes and lots of guys to do hand work to prepare the site for the parking lot. Want firewood bring your truck or trailer and bring your friends and neighbors too. What a turnout we had, wow! I have no idea how many turned out but in two Saturdays we had all of the 300 plus trees removed and the DNR was ready to roll on the parking lot.
