We are a community of believers, proclaiming that Jesus is Lord.
We come together as Catholics to celebrate the Sacraments,
especially the Eucharist, to hear and be transformed by the Word
of God, to bring Christian values and love into our world, and to
live and share the teachings of Jesus. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we strive as a parish family to further the Kingdom of God,
making God’s presence felt and extending the caring spirit of
Jesus.

Where mission, ministries and resources come together.
St. Mary of the Woods is blessed by many vibrant, effective ministries. The Parish
was twice-blessed by two auxiliaries that provide major resources for our Parish to
continue to serve our ministries, parishioners and the community.
The Parish received $25,000 from Holy Name Society in December, and this week we received
another $25,000 from Holy Name plus $100,000 from Altar and Rosary. These two groups energetically and successfully raise funds for the Parish every year. This year was another great success for them.
All our major ministries benefit directly from their thoughtful service and generous hearts; Liturgy,
Music, St. Mary of the Woods School , Religious Education and catechists, our new Teen Ministry,
Spiritual Development like Retreats, Missions and Bible study, and many others.
Join me in heart-felt thanks to Altar and Rosary and Holy Name Society members and their leadership for the support they provide for all our Parish ministries.
Peace,
Father Pat Cecil
and
St. Mary of the Woods Parish Pastoral Council (PPC)
Dear Friends,
For three years our Parish has celebrated a Child Abuse Prevention Mass in April. We do this because we strongly support efforts to stop childhood abuse of any kind and to be in the forefront of
Parishes leading all protection efforts. While the Archdiocese has led the efforts to insure anyone
in the Archdiocese who works with children goes through rigorous background checks, others
have worked to hold them to that promise. A champion for this cause is right here in our midst,
Michael Hoffman. Emerging from hiding because of the shame wrongly inflicted upon him by his
childhood abuser, Michael, in his healing process, has moved to the forefront of ensuring safety
measures for children while extending the balm of healing to those abused. It is a long and painful process and the abused and those of us around them must be supportive and seek healing.
Through Michael’s efforts in working with Cardinal George and the Office for the Protection of
Children, a Healing Garden was created at a space just outside Holy Family Parish.
With the installation of our new Archbishop Blaise Cupich, Michael wanted to insure that all efforts
to stop child abuse would continue so he with Father Pat’s support, invited the Archbishop to
come to our Child Abuse Prevention Mass on April 18th. Archbishop Cupich sent strong evidence
of support when he eagerly agreed to attend. He will Preside as we celebrate strong, healthy families, raise awareness of child prevention efforts, and pray together for continued vigilance.
Please plan on joining us on April 18th at the 4:30 Mass and plan on supporting our healing efforts by planting a pinwheel
God Bless,
Marcy Mahoney,
Pastoral Associate

The Common Good
As God’s family, we are all called to look out for
one another. It’s not just about “me.” It’s about “us.”
How can we be sure that the decisions we make in
our own community and in the world help build up
and protect God’s entire family?
™Isaiah reminds us that God gives us a “well-
trained tongue … to answer the weary a word
that will waken them.” Do we listen to God’s
Spirit within us? How does the Spirit motivate
us and guide our words as we work for a more
just world?
™Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a
slave.” How are we called, especially during
Lent, to empty ourselves for the good of others?
™This week’s CRS Rice Bowl Story of Hope
takes us to a community in the United States, in
the Diocese of Albany. How have our Lenten
reflections on global solidarity affected how we
view poor and vulnerable people in our own
communities?
“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would
do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in
order to help and enrich others by our own poverty.”

We thank you for the many gifts you have
given us. Bless our prayers and sacrifices
this Lent. May we bring hope and life to
our sisters and brothers who suffer with
hunger each day. Unite us through Christ
with the poor worldwide, and bless our
efforts to bring relief to those in need.

“Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year
during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of
the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience.” ~(Lenten Message of Pope Francis, 2015)
During this Lenten journey, let us no longer
be unmoved to the needs of immigrants suffering the heartbreak of family separation, by
the tragedy of children detained at the border,
and by the pain of refugees yearning for freedom. In solidarity with our Church, let us no
longer be indifferent to our immigrant and refugee neighbors who bear the cross of being
undocumented, alone, or afraid.
ACTIONS: This Lent, pray for the immigrants, refugees and unaccompanied children who are suffering.
Contact your member of Congress at 202-225-3121
and urge him or her to support policies that protect the
most vulnerable immigrants and unaccompanied minors. Learn other practical ways to be in solidarity

God of all people,
We offer you our Lenten journey.
May we learn to walk as one human
family, remembering in a special
way those who are poorest and most in need.
Bless our prayers, our fasting and our Lenten
gifts.
Through these actions, we show our love for
your Son, Jesus, and answer your call to love
one another. Amen

THE BEATITUDES
During recent weeks we have reected on the
Ten Commandments. For the coming two
months we will consider the Eight Beatudes. The beatudes are short and simple
statements. Yet, when trying to nd the
right words to discuss them it was necessary to do a bit of research. Many of the
words are commonplace to us – poor,
meek, merciful–but when presented in a
dierent context there is a slightly dierent
or deeper interpretaon.
The Beatudes, shared with us through St.
Mahew’s Gospel and coming from the
Sermon on the Mount, are an appropriate
follow up to our review of Commandments.
We are moving from the “Don’t Do” list to
a presentaon of the wonderful gis to be
shared with us by a loving, caring God. The
beatudes respond to a natural desire for
happiness. Our loving God and Father
recognizes this desire and the beatudes
dene segments of the Faithful and
corresponding rewards. Blessed
“characterisc,” specic reward.
As children, our catechism taught us in a
simple Q & A manner:
Q. Who made you?
A. God made me.
Q. Why did God make you?
A. God made me to know, love and
serve Him in this world and to be
happy
with Him in the next.
The beatudes show us a road map to
aaining that ulmate happiness.

WOODS SENIORS
This is just a friendly reminder that the committee investigating the revival of a club or organization for our Parish’s

(1) a discussion of the recent survey results; and (2) the
creation of a format for the club or organization, covering
such topics as a name for the club, officer positions, dues,
relationship with other seniors clubs in the Deanery, and
any other suggestions you may have to help revive our
senior organization. We will have the surveys and their

REFLECTING
As we begin our entry into Holy Week, we
need to remember those with far less than
we have. We have journeyed through Lent
with our Rice Bowls, a constant reminder of the
call to Alms giving during Lent.. Please remember to return your filled
Rice Bowl this week if you haven’t already done so.
Holy Week floods us with emotions as we enter the journey with Jesus. There’s the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, which we might
associate with having praise heaped upon us for some accomplishment. Boy, it feels good. Then there the questioning Jesus get from
the Pharisees and Scribes. That might be akin to having others question our motives. At last there’s a celebration of Passover with his
friends, we all love celebrations. But, something important changed
here and we stand in awe of what Jesus did. Jesus changed the
Passover feast forever for his followers when he became the Pascal
lamb offered for all sins. Jesus instituted the Eucharist, sharing his
Body and his Blood by blessing and sharing it with his Apostles. We
are taken back for we know what lies ahead of him, the tests he will
endure.
Tested he is as he experiences the betrayal of a friend, the denial by
another, and the humiliation before the Sanhedrin, Herod and Pilate.
Yet, this was not enough for a blood-thirsty crowd. Jesus would carry
the cross of our sins, be publically stripped, and crucified before our
eyes. We stand broken-hearted at the foot of the cross, but we know
the hope that a new day can bring. Easter comes and Jesus rises to
new life and so fills us with hope and love. We know of God’s saving
mercy.
Please join us as we travel through Holy Week together and experience all of the wonder it brings.
God bless,
Marcy Mahoney

Supports Child Abuse Prevention
Month
April is designated as Child Abuse
Prevention month. On Wednesday, April 1st, we will
join Alderman Mary O'Connor, Illinois First Lady
Diana Rauner and Wildwood School in a pinwheel
planting ceremony. The pinwheel is the national symbol of child abuse prevention efforts. It represents the
innocence, joy and fun that should be the experience
of all children. We will be planting pinwheels around
the entire school and community as a reminder of our
commitment to protect all God's children from harm.
St. Mary of the Woods School students will hold a dollar dress down day on April 16th to raise money for

Our Holy Thursday appeal helps persons living with HIV/AIDS. Catholic Charies HIV/AIDS services and Ministry provides

basic life necessies (as food, housing, transportaon, in-home services, nancial assistance, counseling and advocacy as
well as educaon and outreach) to those people who are on the margins – – the poor, the uninsured, those without
health care, those with chemical dependencies or mental health issues and to many who have no other support systems, in addion to living with HIV/AIDS. They may be strangers to us but may also be our family members, neighbors,
co-worker, friends and acquaintances.
OUR GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION NEXT WEEK IS FOR THE HOLY LAND
Chrisans around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Chrisans
in the Holy Land. Many Chrisans in the Holy Land depend on the collecon for their lives. As a poncal collecon requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collecon oers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace
and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are supporng Chrisans in the Holy Land.
Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formaon and educaon,
maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducng pastoral ministry. For more informaon, visit
www.MyFranciscan.org.TThe Good Friday Collecon is requested by the Holy Father. Please be as generous as your abundance allows. Our parish will support Chrisans in the Holy Land through today’s Good Friday Collecon. Please support
our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to today’s special collecon. The poncal collecon allows for care
of Chrisanity’s holiest sites and for God’s people living in the Holy Land.

If we give according to God’s principles, God will give back to us. The young man who gave his loaves and
shes didn’t have to go without dinner.
Stewardship reminds us to count our blessings, acknowledge God’s gis to us, and express thanks to God by
a proporonate giving of our me, talent and treasure.
“God can mulply his favors among you so that you may always have enough of every thing and end
even a surplus for good works.” (II Corinthians 9:8)
The decision to give has not so much to do with calendars and budgets. Really, the decision to give is really
a maer of pung your life with God into perspecve.

CARE & CONCERN
Queen of All Saints Basilica Bereavement Support Group - Phase I
The death of a loved one involves serious “Grief Work” and it can be overwhelming. Healing is not a passive event; it is
an active process and requires emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual energy. It is most difficult to go through
alone. It is helpful to have fellow companions who will bring you comfort and support during this difficult journey. We offer you
this opportunity. Sunday, April 19th from 2 pm to 4 pm This is an introductory meeting and includes a film entitled
“Working Through Your Grief,” followed by a sharing of experiences and insight. Materials will also be available as well as opportunities for continued support. It will be held on the 2nd floor of the Benedict Center, 6275 Ionia Avenue. When you arrive, please
ring the bell for ‘religious education.”
Follow up sessions will be held Tuesday evenings at 7 pm at 5225 Rivers Edge, Chicago, #408 (First building)
April 21, 28; May 5, 12, 19. Please try to attend all meetings.
