WELCOME
With this assembly of 1,300 educators and industry leaders, the Alabama
Educational Technology Conference (AETC) enters its nineteenth year.
The conference will again be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention
Complex. The Entertainment District with nighttime activities and restaurants
has expanded since last year as well! AETC 2015 promises to be another
exciting conference with the Opening Session, concurrent sessions, hands-on
workshops, vendor exhibits, student showcases, poster sessions, and iShare
sessions. The conference will focus on providing proven and practical solutions
to the challenges facing the educator in the area of instruction and integrating
technology into the classroom.
During one-hour concurrent sessions and hands-on workshops, see Alabama’s
classroom teachers demonstrate tested solutions. Nationally known featured
speakers, Jeff Utecht and Leslie Fisher, will return this year. We have also
invited David Lockhart to join us this year as a Spotlight Speaker. You can see
bios on all of our featured speakers on the conference website.
The Exhibit Hall will provide even more opportunities for
attendees to see the newest educational technologies
and related software. There is something for
everyone, from the beginner to the
advanced user. We are confident your
participation will be both productive
and enjoyable, and we look forward to
you joining us as we set sail on the
technology seas!

The New Learning Experience: Taking advantage of the Information Age
Presenter: Jeff Utecht
Code #
318ThA Thursday, June 11
8:30-11:30
Society is changing. We are more connected than we have ever been in the history of mankind. We are
producing more content, sharing more ideas, and learning at a pace never before seen. This workshop
will look at our changing global society, changing universities, and how teachers can take advantage of
the wealth of knowledge in their classrooms. Recent research shows that today’s students fall into what
is called the 1-9-90 rule. That is that only 1% of students are actively creating content, 9% know how to
curate digital information, while 90% of this current generation only consume digital information.
What are schools doing to encourage students to be creators of content and not just consumers of
information? We will focus our time on looking at everything from how we can have students create
their own core text for a class to creating digital maps to make sense of their world. We will explore new
approaches to learning within the connected classroom as well as how educators can move from a
Pedagogical approach to a Heutagogical approach to learning within their classrooms. Participants will
have time to explore, learn, discuss and walk away ready to take advantage of the information age in
their classroom. This workshop will focus on the essential question: What skills need to be replaced in our
schools to ensure we are preparing students for their future not our past?
Building Student Centered Blended Learning Environments

1:30-4:30
The latest statistics out of the U.S. show that 80% of college freshmen will take at least one online course.
Most of these classes will be in the form of a “blended classroom,” meaning that time will be spent both in
a traditional classroom and online. This institute will focus on creating a blended classroom for learning.
We will discuss how pedagogy changes within a blended classroom environment and how true studentcentered learning is created with technology. As part of this workshop, we will look at ways to manage
your virtual classroom and create a plan on how you can incorporate it into your everyday teaching and
make it just what you do. Teaching in a blended classroom is not about knowing technology, it is about
having a mindset of allowing students to take control of the content and helping them to make meaning
and create knowledge from it in multiple forms, styles, and media.
