All ELLs have cultural and linguistic differences that require the specialized knowledge of language acquisition and the cultural competency of their counselors. In the case of immigrant students and/or families, knowledge of the Acculturation Process is crucial. In this presentation, we share research on the Acculturation Process, detail how HILT Resource Counselors work closely with school staff, teachers and administrators to provide information on cultural differences, culturally sensitive and sound practices, and how this work enhances student success. English Learners are very diverse, not only in culture, but in academic backgrounds, socio‐economic experiences and many other factors. Participants will learn about models for those differences and how they impact students' acculturation process. The presenters will use a case study to reflect one student's needs and how educators can address those needs. Participants will view the APS video on Reunified Families which highlights a very challenging issue in the EL community: children who were separated from their families, sometimes for many years. Through these reflections, participants will learn more about the barriers EL students face and the impact of those barriers on their successful acculturation. Successful interventions for EL students and families will be shared by the presenters and participants. MUSIC INTEGRATION ACTIVITIES FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS THAT CONNECT WITH CORE SUBJECTS Session # 201529094107 Tuesday 10:10 ‐ 11:30 Presenter(s): Maritza Sadowsky Audience: All Elementary (PK‐5) The purpose of this session is to share music lesson plans/activities that integrate music into academic subjects such as English (Language Arts), Science, Social Studies, and Math in grades K‐5, using a variety of standard musical resources found in existing music curricula. Music teachers are often asked by general classroom teachers to help them incorporate music concepts into a particular unit of math, science, language arts, and social studies, because classroom teachers may feel that integrating music into core curriculum classes can be intimidating. I have created or adapted activities using several different music approaches, methodologies, websites, and apps that make learning fun and interactive. These activities involve fundamental music concepts (beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, form, dynamics, timbre) using songs, movements, and instruments that are applicable to the needs of the students. They are also intended to help classroom teachers to find a way to incorporate music into their classes and improve their skills in adapting specific strategies to enhance their own lesson plans. Music integration is a necessary component of the core subjects in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (Title 9, Part A, Section 9101 [11]). Fundamental concepts of the Core Curriculum are similar to concepts in Music. Through Music‐Integrated lessons, students become engaged and focused on the content, because it aids in educating the whole student. They get to hear, see, create, and have better understanding of the core subject concepts through music. I currently use these activities with my students at Jamestown Elementary School and I feel confident asserting that creativity and problem‐solving skills acquired through music training reinforce concepts and prepare students uniquely for their future success.
