Dear Friends,
Collection for week of March 14/15, 2015
Weekly Collection
Weekly Income Needed
$16,308
$18,200
(1,892)
Weekly Over/(Under)
($8,044)
YTD Over/(Under)
Includes $2,519 E-Giving, 15% Participation
Total Debt to Archdiocese:
$2,326,404
Mortgage and past due assessments
As you can see, the weekly income needed to
operate the Parish has been increased to
$18,200. This is necessary since operating
expenses, including employee expenses, utility
expenses and insurance costs have risen.
Recent weekly income has been falling below
that needed to effectively operate the Parish.
That deficit has been accumulating against the
annual budget. Additionally, several new major, unbudgeted, maintenance projects have
been identified which will need to be addressed
soon - repairs to the Parish Center Roof and
Gutters, as well as continued repairs to the
concrete sidewalks in front of the Main Church.
These projects are estimated to cost about
$40,000. Please be as generous as you can.
Today I wanted to share with you some of my favorite quotes from Franciscan
priest, writer and speaker, Richard Rohr. Some of them, directly or indirectly,
have to deal with Jesus’ mysterious line from today’s Gospel: “Whoever loves
his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for
life eternal.”
So much of what Rohr writes about is the apparent paradox of our faith and
how to truly go “deeper” into the life that Jesus promises us is ours, when we, like
a grain of wheat, fall to the ground and die so that we might rise and produce
much fruit. (Warning: some of his words console; others hurt as they challenge!)
We do not think ourselves into new ways of living; we live ourselves into new ways
of thinking. (In other words, I can’t just “think” about Jesus’ words or “think” about
spirituality; that won’t transform me or anything. I just jump in and “live” Jesus’
words, his way, his spirituality; that will transform my thinking, my whole way of
life.
Every time God forgives us, God is saying that God’s own rules do not matter as
much as the relationship that God wants to create with us.
Most of us were taught that God would love us if and when we change. In fact,
God loves you so that you can change. What empowers change, what makes you
desirous of change is the experience of love. It is that inherent experience of love
that becomes the engine of change.
It’s a gift to joyfully recognize and accept our own smallness and ordinariness.
Then you are free with nothing to live up to, nothing to prove, and nothing to
protect. Such freedom is my best description of Christian maturity, because once
you know that your “I” is great and one with God, you can ironically be quite
content with a small and ordinary “I.” No grandstanding is necessary. Any question
of your own importance or dignity has already been resolved once and for all and
forever.
Christians are usually sincere and well-intentioned people until you get to any real
issues of ego, control, power, money, pleasure and security. Then they tend to be
pretty much like everybody else. We often give a bogus version of the Gospel,
some fast-food religion, without any deep transformation of the self; and the result
has been the spiritual disaster of “Christian” countries that tend to be as consumer
-oriented, proud, warlike, racist, class conscious, and addictive as everybody
else—and sometimes worse, I’m afraid.
The Parish Life Center (PLC) and Parish Offices are fully operational. All bills for construction and furnishings are paid. However, to
facilitate timely completion of construction, we
utilized Parish funds - which were repaid in
January. The case statement for the Parish
Appeal planned $50,000 to ABVM School. We
have deferred payment of that commitment
until after PLC bills were paid. These obligations will be fulfilled by October 2015. Therefore, it is important that you continue your
generous support of the Parish Appeal. To
date, we have raised approximately
$373,778 from donations of more than 700
parishioners - such as you. We need to
collect an additional $13,700 by December
2015 to fulfill our obligations for the scope of
this Appeal. Thus, the Goal has been modified to reflect these needs.
For details, please contact John Brennan,
Secretary of Financial Affairs, at
[email protected].
The most amazing fact about Jesus, unlike almost any other religious founder, is
that he found God in disorder and imperfection—and told us that we must do the
same or we would never be content on this earth.
The people who know God well—mystics, hermits, prayerful people, those who
risk everything to find God—always meet a lover, not a dictator.
All great spirituality teaches about letting go of what you don’t need and who you
are not. Then, when you can get little enough and naked enough and poor
enough, you’ll find that the little place where you really are is ironically more than
enough and is all that you need. At that place, you will have nothing to prove to
anybody and nothing to protect. . . That place is called freedom. It’s the freedom of
the children of God. Such people can connect with everybody. They don’t feel the
need to eliminate anybody.
Food for thought for this 5th week of Lent!
Peace and all good,
Fr. Murphy

Fifth Sunday of Lent
Scripture Reflection
March 22, 2015
In today's Gospel, Jesus speaks about death. He gives the
analogy of the grain of wheat that must fall to the ground
and die in order to produce much fruit. Later, he speaks
about how he will be "lifted up from the earth," making
reference to his crucifixion. He says that the fruit of this will
be that he will "draw everyone" to himself. Jesus is telling us
that death yields a greater good, that it produces fruit. So,
when he insists that we must follow him, we can take
courage. Yes, following Jesus means accompanying him all
the way to the cross. It means that we too are called to carry
our own cross and die to ourselves. But this death leads to a
greater kind of life.
The season of Lent is designed not only to help us reflect a
bit more deeply on the sufferings and death of Christ, but
also to prepare us for the glory that follows. The joy of Easter
and the triumph of the Resurrection are all the more powerful
precisely because they emerge out of the darkest, most
"hopeless" of situations. When we cling to Jesus even
through these kinds of circumstances in our own lives-whether they be sickness, unemployment, conflict, or
disappointment--we are those servants that Jesus spoke of,
the ones who go where Jesus goes, even when the going
gets tough. But let us remember, as we march through Lent,
that this journey will bear much fruit.
John 12:20-33: How do you see the cross of Christ
“glorifying” God?
Jeremiah 31:31-34: How do others see that “the law” is
written on your heart?
Hebrews 5:7-9: What do you find most interesting from this
reading in Hebrews?
HEALING OF FAMILIES
PRAYER SERVICE
Tuesday, March 24th
Assumption BVM Church
at 7:00 pm
Please join us on this special night!!
Lent is a time of repentance, conversion, and growth in discipleship. It is also a time of healing. We believe the Lord continues to
heal us so that we can grow in our life of discipleship and be the
people we were created to be—men and women who grow in
healthy, holy, life-giving relationships.
Sometimes we may experience the need for healing in our own
families—hurts, wounds, divisions, tensions. As Christians, we are
equipped with the gifts of the Spirit to cooperate with God to advance such healing. For more information on this topic, visit
http://www.healingoffamilies.com. As part of our Lenten offerings,
Fr. Murphy will be offering a Night of Prayer for Healing of Families
on Tuesday, March 24 at 7 pm in our church. All are welcome.
Altar Servers Needed:
Our Altar Servers are a blessing to us. They are a major help in assuring a beautiful Mass.
Children must be baptized and have received their first Holy Communion. If your child will be
entering 4th–8th grades this Fall or are in high school and would like to serve, please call Ann
at the Parish Office at 610-869-2722. Training sessions will be held on Saturday, April 18th
and April 25th from 10:00-11:00 am in the Church. Children need to attend both sessions.

Living the Mass
We are encouraging all parishioners to read the “Living
the Mass” book during Lent. In addition, we have pulled
some of our favorite notes with questions to ask yourself as
you read and ponder the Mass.
In “Living the Mass”, did you notice the following?
Page 142: That by participating in the Eucharistic prayer,
sign of peace and partaking of Eucharist itself we are embraced by God and strengthened to go in peace. Have you
ever taken a moment after receiving Communion to feel
God’s embrace?

Page 144: When the church teaches us that the Eucharist
is the "source and summit" of our lives, it is reminding us
that God alone, who is present in the Eucharist, is our
source of fulfillment. How do you let God challenge you to
admit that He alone sustains you?
Rev. Pio Mandato, FMHJ is a Franciscan priest living as a missionary hermit in the Diocese of Scranton, PA under Bishop
Joseph C. Bambera, D.D. His family is from Pietrelcina, Italy, the
town of Saint (Padre)Pio, the famed stigmatist priest. Fr. Mandato’s parents knew Padre Pio well & Fr. Pio received his first Holy
Communion from St. Pio before coming to New Jersey.
Page 150: Holy Communion is not a call to retreat into seclusion with God but is a call to action. St. James challenges us to "be doers of the word, and not merely hearers".
How do you become a doer of the word during the week?
Rev. Ronan Murphy hails from Dublin, Ireland & is a priest of the
Camden Diocese. Ordained on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima in
the Jubilee Year 2000, Father has served as Parochial Vicar in
St. Mary’s Parish, Gloucester City & St. Peter’s in Merchantville.
He also served at All Saints, Perth City in Australia & has given
missions and conferences in many countries. He is presently
stationed in Holy Child Parish in Runnemede.
Page 154 & 155: In the concluding rights, we are sent forth
as a community of faith, unified in Christ Jesus. We are:
One, meaning that we are unified.
Holy, meaning that we are followers of the one and only
God.
Catholic, meaning that we are universal and are sent to
proclaim the Good News to all nations.
Apostolic, meaning that we are sent, commissioned by
Jesus to proclaim His word.
While the Mass sends us in a general direction, it is up to
us to put God’s word into action day in and day out. How
do our concluding rights challenge you personally each
week?

Parish Clean-Up Day
Saturday, April 18th, 8 am
Meet in front of the
ABVM Parish Center
We are in need of volunteers to help with the Parish Clean-Up Day. Since
we have done such a marvelous job over the years with the inside of the
buildings, we will concentrate on the exterior areas this year. Please come
prepared to work outside cleaning up overgrown brush, downed trees and
general clean up. If available, please bring work gloves, rakes, wheel
barrows, pick up trucks,……you get the idea!! For questions, contact
John Brennan at [email protected] or call 610
-869-4100.
Parish Receives Disbursement of $4,447
from Heritage of Faith
The Archdiocese has transferred an additional $4,447 to our
Parish’s Heritage of Faith – Vision of Hope Trust Fund Account.
Our Parish currently has received almost $298,000 based on your pledge
payments. To date the Parish Finance Council has allocated monies from
the Trust Fund as follows:

Parish Debt Reduction ------- $80,000

Church mortgage ------------ $45,000

School Expansion ------------ $50,000

Parish Life Center ------------ $110,000
We are pleased that 223 of our parishioners have totally fulfilled their
pledges. Another 38 parishioners are on track to fully meet their pledge
payments. The Campaign will end in 2015. These funds are an important
part of the Parish budgeting process. Your generosity has enabled us to
reduce our debt while supporting the expansion of our Parish School and
the completion of the Parish Life Center.
We are grateful to all who have pledged, worked and prayed to make the
Campaign a success.
Second Collection This Weekend
Our Archdiocese will take up a collection for
the Church in Latin America on the weekend
of March 21 and 22, 2015. Please be generous
in this collection and take this opportunity to
support the many catechetical and youth programs as well as financial aid to the marginalized and suffering in Latin America and the
Caribbean. Your support makes a difference.
