“ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”
Message from the President
So these are a couple of art opportunities you will
want to be on the lookout for in the near future.
For the year 2016 we have firmed up a two month exhibition with the Vision Gallery in Chandler. This exhibition will take place in July and August. Yes, it's the
hot period in the Valley, but this is a quality venue located in the heart of downtown Chandler and is on the
main street and is the entrance into the City Municipal
Buildings. We are also in the middle of negotiating a
show next April in the WHAM gallery in Surprise. We
are looking to make all the events this year and next
ongoing from year to year. This will help our artists
plan and prepare for their upcoming exhibitions well in
advance.
There's a lot to report this month, so let's get your glasses
on, so we can read away. I would like to start off with
some news as to exhibition for the rest of the year and
going into next. We are planning ahead to give us plenty
of time to hold quality exhibitions and to give you, the
artists, time to produce new works. We want to encourage you to create on a continuing basis so you always
have something new to exhibit. We have to keep our
shows new and exciting, and presenting the same works
over and over will grow stale with the public. As mentioned in the last newsletter, our next juried show will be
September 26 to October 29, 2015 in the Holland Gallery, 34250 N. 60th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85266. It is our
present plan to do a show on a yearly basis with this
group. For this show, contributions will be low (20%) and
we have also just procured some extra quality space that
will allow us to expand the show a bit. This is going to be
a very nice show and give us a chance to present our
work up in North Scottsdale in a venue that has very
strong local support and popularity. This show will host
50 to 75 quality artworks and should be quite competitive
as to jurying and ribbons. So submit your best work and
let’s show off what we can do.
I also wanted to talk a little more about the creation of
our Online Artist Web Gallery. If you haven't been on
the website, http://azartalliance.com/featuredartists/, in awhile, you ought to take a
look. There's lots of new stuff to see.
Also, if you are a member league that
hosts events and are not using our
website to help get the word out for
your events, you're losing out. Anyway, back to the
Web Gallery. If you go to the site and you are looking
at the homepage you will notice a slide show going on.
That slide show is going to feature artists that are in
the Web Gallery and bring them to our homepage,
front and center. These artists will be rotated in and
out periodically. A nice little perk….." being featured
on the homepage".
We have been presented a show opportunity with our
member league, WHAM, and the City of Goodyear to host
an Arizona Art Alliance art tent in their annual "Art is
Alive" Arts and Cultural Festival Oct. 31 and Nov. 1,
2015. This event will be well advertised in print and with
billboards on I-10 freeway. Last year's event drew over
8,000 people and was a big success. The event will also
feature other art, entertainment, and cultural activities.
The Alliance Tent will house only 12 exhibit spaces each
containing 6 of our art panels (one side only) and a table
(approx 12' x 6'). Occupants will find their rented spaces
ready to go, just add art, some promotion, and maybe the
things needed for demonstration. These spots will be
offered for our leagues and our artists to exhibit, sell, promote or to do whatever art event they want. There will
be NO Commissions paid on anything sold. This event
will NOT be juried so it is wide open for any quality artist.
April 2015
That could be you, but only if you are juried and participating in the Online Web Gallery. If you are interested in promoting yourself and trying to connect with
a larger audience, this is an affordable marketing tool
for you to look at. The cost is $50 for a six-month period and, if you want to renew, you must change out
your art with your new subscription. This keeps you
looking fresh. Any sales that come to you from this
tool are COMMISSION FREE. BE ON THE WATCH AS
THIS OPPORTUNITY, AND HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE
OF IT, WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON. Wow, I am going
to look into this myself! Oops, I am already there. As
they say in the movies, I not only

talk the talk, but I walk the walk.
Finally, I want to encourage all artists that are interested
in gaining exposure for their art to send us your art images that we may use in our Marketing. Take a look at
our home page at azartalliance.com and see what's happening. I think you will like it. Send us jpeg images of
your artwork, name of the piece, and your name on the
label to [email protected] and be on the watch.

Take a peek through the window! As
we embrace the future.
I am structuring a number of viable
plans to departmentalize operations
inside the Art alliance, this will pathway us into a
smoother transition in moving forward with the
changes that are now being implemented. These
changes will provide better control over departmental
oversights, logistics, and add better operational procedures, and add accountability.
The departments that are being implemented are as
listed below by name.
(1) Department of public relations.
(2) Department of business development.
(3) AND...I am proud to announce the formation of The
Arizona Art Show.TV
The Arizona Art Show.TV.... will be the premier art
television show hosted, produced, and shot here in
Arizona. Stay tuned for more information and updates
concerning the lunch date, and channel information.
Arizona Art Alliance
Changes for the
League Representative Meetings
The Az. Art Alliance will be changing League Representative
Meetings to once every quarter instead of monthly. The Board
of Directors for the Alliance will still meet monthly as usual
and on the last meeting of the quarter (every three months)
we will invite the League Representatives for that month's
Board Meeting. That meeting will be abbreviated so as to allow time for any Rep that has questions or wants to address
the entire Board or any of its members .
All of our Board meetings are open to any rep any time they
want to attend. There will just be no formal invitation or Rep
Meeting the first two monthly meetings of any quarter.
Our next meeting with the Reps will be Friday, June 19th
at 9:30 am at our Tempe Headquarters.
Don't worry, we will send out a
reminder and the “coffee
will be on”
Listed below are the names of the social media sites
that you will be able to watch on your iPads, smart
phones and computers. ."YouTube, YouStream, and
vibe". Will be easily accessed on those devices. Other
mainstream social media sites are Facebook, twitter,
LinkedIn, and Pinterest which most of our readers are
already familiar with. Lunch dates times and invites
will be sent out via newsletters and press releases.
The above strategies are being utilized to bolster public awareness of our artists, and the extraordinary
work that they have created, and free recognition to
our affiliated organizations and number of organizations we support. The Arizona art alliance is a nonprofit 501c3 organization, and we are bridging a pathway to become one of the premier
not for profit art organizations in
Arizona.
Partner with us as we embrace
The future!!

In Remembrance
of
Pat Gellenbeck
Pat passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Hospice of the Valley in Glendale. Pat was born January 24, 1928 in
Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Gus and Letha Aneshansley. She
was united in marriage to Daniel H. Gellenbeck for 65 years.
Pat was a homemaker, mother, and accomplished artist, doing
large beautiful vibrant abstracts. She was a founding member
of the Phoenix Artist’s Guild and a 20-year member of the Arizona Art Alliance as well as being a member of the Arizona Pastel Artists Association and Critique Encounters XII where she was
that league's representative to The Arizona Art Alliance for several years in the past.
Her and Dan worked so hard to make sure we had successful
shows for 12 years. She was also a very active member of the Critique encounters 12 ( group of painting
ladies with a gallery in Prescott Az.).
Pat held an office with the Phoenix Artists Guild for 29 years. She was one of the founding members and
was very very active with us for so many years. Her husband Dan Gellenbeck, was the glue that held the
PAG shows together every year. He built all the panels for our shows, and helped hang every show.
Any time we had a question you could go to Pat and Dan to solve the problem. Pat will be missed by so
many of the people in the artist community.

Inspired in Jail?
Joyce Hergert was born in, Port Clinton,
Ohio a small town located near Lake Erie.
“Condor”
At that time, her Father was the Sheriff of Ottawa County so the first 12 years of her life
were spent in the jail. Years ago, the jail was connected to
the Sheriff’s residence so her “Wonder Bread Years” were spent living in a big wonderful
house and jail. Her mother was the Matron who cooked and did other tasks for the prisoners. Consequently, one of her earliest art inspirations came from one of the prisoners who
also happened to be a very talented artist. She still remembers
the beautifully detailed color pencil drawings that he had created in his “spare” time.
In the 70’s, seeking sunshine, she moved to Florida and later to
Southern California. In 1980, she arrived in beautiful Arizona
and now considers it home. Inspired by the vast intensity of the
sunset’s colors, the serene subtle hues of the desert, and the
towering pines of the high country she picked up a paintbrush
and never looked back.

Joyce’s “style” is a “continuing journey.” She
enjoys the dramatic immediate impact of pastels
as well as the unexpected exciting surprise that
“Love Geraniums”
watercolor delivers. The possibilities of other
Pastel
mediums and their combination are also frequently explored. Her love of vibrant colors and
a loose, relaxed approach is evidenced in her work. Her subject matter is varied from still life,
landscapes, florals, animals, figures and abstracts to whatever impacts her at the moment to feel “that would be an
awesome painting.” “It seems that almost everywhere I look I can see a potential painting and feel fortunate to live in
such a beautiful inspiring environment.”
Joyce Hergert holds degrees in computer graphics, advertising design and business management. She has studied watercolor, pastel, acrylics, mixed media and most recently
sculpture with many talented art instructors. She has entered and been juried into many shows and exhibitions
where she has received numerous awards. Her work is in
several private collections throughout the country.

“As I have shown and exhibited my work, I have realized
the joy and satisfaction I receive when others respond to
one of my pieces with the same emotion that I had experienced which originally inspired me to create the painting.
It is at that point I know I have been successful in my work.”

Reaching Out to Lifecare
When Joyce Hergert was asked “what do you enjoy most about creating art?” She replied, “sharing it” She
shares her love of paint and color with the residents of Paradise Valley Lifecare Center several times a month.
Through the Art Alliance Outreach Program, she partners with Vince Valicenti of Desert Sage Artists and others
to paint regularly at the center. Some of the residents are artists who have not painted in a while and others
have never painted but have always wanted to try.
Joyce affectionately states that Vince, who has volunteered at PVLCC for over 17 years, is her hero. “He is an extraordinary person. It has been such an inspiration to know him and so touching to watch his interaction with the
residents. Some he has known for many years. They love him and it obvious he loves them too.”
“The experience of seeing the joy and reaction of the residents to paint, paper and color cannot be put into
words. It is a wonderful life lesson in sharing, giving and living that I highly recommend to all.”
Art Alliance is always looking for volunteers for many of their Outreach programs. Contact them for more information, you’ll be glad you did!

ART ICULATION
Cami and John are two of our very
favorite special friends. And what
talented friends they are! Cami is a
very gifted artist and John is an
amazing chef. They live outside
Taos, New Mexico in a Pueblo-style
house surrounded by fields of dahlias. Cami seems to have a spiritual
connection with her dahlias. It’s almost as though they
speak through her when she paints them. And Boy-OhBoy, can that John guy cook up a storm. Several years
ago we were hosting a dinner party at our home. He literally turned an epic barbecue disaster into a culinary
event to remember. Think, “explosion” and “burned arm
hair.”
Upon walking into the room where I had arranged my
nativities as part of my Christmas décor, Cami appeared
to be noticeably shaken. She explained that while she
was painting my gift, a small scene began to appear in
the heart of the flower. After a while she could see that
it was a very abstract nativity scene. She also said that I
seemed to be a very active presence in her studio as she
painted.
WARNING. The next paragraph might be considered a
little spooky. You may want to hold hands with someone
near and dear as you read it.
In 2006, the Big Irishman commissioned Cami to do a
special painting for my Christmas gift. “ROSE OF THE DESERT” was created by Cami and hand-delivered by both
Cami and John shortly before Christmas.
“To see the world in a grain of sand,
And Heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your
hand,
And eternity in an hour.”
William Blake
Please forgive my skill shortage in the areas of editing
and photography. Remember, I’m a word artist.
On the back of the painting Cami wrote these words.
To me, this is a perfect definition of ART.
Questions and Comments: [email protected]
Very quickly, I need to explain to you, dear readers,
about one of the Brennan Family Christmas traditions.
Throughout my life, I have collected over 100 Nativity
scenes from all over the world. Many countries are represented and every possible artistic medium has been
used in their creation. They are all precious to me because of their beauty and the different methods that
were used to tell the same age-old story.

paintings of hearts, made Chinese rice paper scrolls with the characters of the sheep/goat and their own animal sign from the Chinese zodiac for the Chinese New Year’ celebration and they worked
with pointillism in the style of George Seurat.

The awards from the annual Gourd

Teen Category (high school) and
the Youth Category (middle school)
are represented. You can see by
the pictures, just a few of many,
that this is a highlight of the year.
We cannot thank the Gourd Artists enough for their sponsorship
of this activity.

Quilting Designs were a theme for the Opportunity House children this past month and are in the project plans for
Desert Artists Extra Special Art classes as well. Some of the young children did not really know what a quilt was
and volunteers brought in quilts to show. The students made a paper quilt for display in the classroom by tying
together the quilt “blocks” that each child made.
This project can be adjusted for age groups and abilities—the older students can learn about the incredible history
of quilting and the many ways quilters tell stories and record events with their quilts. They are exposed to definitive patterns from America and around the world. Quilts are often made to send to our troops, comfort those in
hospitals, record life events. The Fabric Arts contribute greatly to our artistic world.

Share Your League’s Outreach Activities
Our Alliance non-vets programs go on doing their good work each week/month, mostly without great fanfare. But
the lives they impact in a positive way is incredibly important. We have a 105 year old participant in the Caring
Thru Art program and children as young as six in the Opportunity House Art Program. We find excellent response
to our work in the pre-teen and teenage participants in the Desert Artists Extra Special Art Program.
John Fontana is working monstrous hours with the “Art of Healing” veterans programs (4 of them), as well as
other Alliance business, and is keeping you informed of those activities in his monthly column in the newsletter.
He has outstanding volunteer league participation and accomplishments are great.
I am reasonably sure that each Alliance member art group has its own way of reaching out that they have not
shared with us through the newsletter. Let’s get that changed and have your group share what you are doing on a
volunteer basis for the community. You are doing good things, let us know about them.

2015 GOVERNOR'S ARTS AWARDS
Presented by:
Arizona Citizens for the Arts in partnership with the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Office of the Governor
There were two special events for the Nominees for the Governor's Awards in March. Receptions in Tucson and
Phoenix in early March and the gala night of the Awards Dinner on March 23rd at the Sheraton in Downtown
Phoenix. Two of your Arizona Art Alliance members were nominated this year for "Arts in Education" Awards: the
WHAM Art Association, founded in 2006 by Connie Whitlock, and your Arizona Art Alliance Community Outreach
Director, for long-term work with the Special-Needs and Mentoring Art .
More than 600 arts supporters, artists, advocates and business leaders attended. Governor, Doug Ducey, spoke
about the importance of the Arts in Arizona. Michael Vargas, President of the Arizona Citizens for the Arts introduced the honored guests. Nicole Crites of CBS5 was the Mistress of Ceremonies. SRP's, Peter Hayes, introduced
the Governor and welcomed us all to the event.
There was a cocktail hour and a silent auction of wonderful items on which to bid. Dinner was delicious, the entertainment delightful and the announcement of the awards was exciting. What an opportunity to meet so many
dedicated people of Arizona's Artistic world!
(Go to azcitizensforthearts.org where the following information is posted on their website, also, go to azarts.gov
to view pictures of the winners and the art presented to each one.

Veterans Outreach Program
A Veteran Art Based Program Addressing the Invisible Wounds of War
Greetings Veteran Supporters!
Thanks to the VFW Post 3632 and American Legion, Post 2 for their
invitation to display our Veterans’ art and to be part of the Vietnam 50th Anniversary Commemorative Celebration. A special
thanks to Mike Ferguson, USMC for extending the invitation and
for his generous support.
The Friday evening ceremony was well-attended by many Vietnam
Veterans, high ranking representatives from the Department of
Defense, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order Purple Heart and Lady Veteran Advocates and Veteran supportive organizations.
Mike Ferguson, USMC
It was an ideal opportunity for us to tell our story how art can help heal and provide the therapeutic nonmedicated benefits to the invisible wounds of war. Our bio was read to the audience reflecting our Veteran Outreach Program commitment and the benefits Veterans are receiving from art. As a result, we have received several
inquiries from Veterans requesting information regarding class locations, times and contact information. One Veteran stated, “I wish I had known about your program years ago, it would have been a big help to me”.
By giving back, our program is helping many Veterans in need and is rewarding to both the Veterans, the instructors and their helpers. Our challenge is to educate the public on the benefits of art and our successful program by
offering an alternative to medicated solutions for PTSD and TBI. Please help by informing your friends, neighbors
and contacts of our efforts to help those that have sacrificed so much. Any donation amount is appreciated.
For many returning Veterans, the invisible wounds
of war still rages on. We must not forget them!
The Veteran Outreach Program has grown to a successful
and gratifying status. What is needed now is assistance
with computer talent to promote and communicate with
other Veteran Organizations, Veteran Publications, sponsors and grantors. Needed are writing and computer skills,
with a passion to make a difference in Veterans lives.
Four hours per month is all that is needed for a rewarding
experience. Work from home. Will work closely with Project Manager.
E-mail john.fontana@azartalliance if interested and for
more information.
Thank you Outreach volunteers one and all!

We took a Picasso and cut the picture into 15 pieces. Each veteran received a piece and used their artistic ability to
create their part. we then put them all together. It is hanging at the Mesa Active Adult Center and will move to the
Disabled Veterans center in Mesa.
