SPREAD THE WORD Benevola United Methodist Church June/July 2015 From the Pastor’s Desk Benevola United Methodist Church 19925 Benevola Church Road Boonsboro, MD 21713 301-791-3576 Pastor: John Dean Worship: 9:00 a.m. Sunday School: 10:15 a.m. Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary…Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Psalm 150 In January we started a new worship service at 11:15am on Sundays. Some of you have been attending regularly and I thank you for your presence and participation. For those who have not attended this service, I would like to tell you more about it. It is quite different from our traditional 9am worship service but it is certainly a time of praise and worship. We are using the screen and projector to play the music and show lyrics to the songs. Some of the music is fast and upbeat but much of it is slower and easy to learn. We are using a variety of “contemporary” songs you may hear on the Christian radio stations. Others are simply traditional hymns arranged in a different rhythm or tempo. There is no bulletin or printed program guide and that is intentional. The format is pretty simple: Music/Songs – Scripture – Reflection on the scripture – Music/Songs – Interactive Discussion – Prayer – Music/Songs – Blessing & Dismissal. We tend to finish up around 12 noon to 12:15. We have had live music occasionally provided by Bob & Will Hawfield, Charlie & Alex Leadingham and Conner McGrady. We always welcome anyone who offers to perform some songs for us. Just let me know if you want to do that. We are in need of a “Song Leader” to help and teach us to sing the new songs. We do not yet have a person to stand up front and lead the music. As you know, that is not my gift. If you enjoy singing and helping others to sing out, please come and join us. Many of you who will read this letter already attend our 9am service and may not be interested in a new style of worship. That is OK. What I ask of you is to let others know about it and invite them to try it out. If you have friends or neighbors who may enjoy this type of worship, please encourage them to come. We love to see new faces here at Benevola. Please pray for our church and support our new worship service as we seek to reach more people for Jesus Christ. God bless you!
