The scarf is the third item in what has become a faux entrelac series, following a shawl and a baby blanket. Patterns for the other two items are also available on this website. Gauge 10 sts = 4”, although gauge is not essential. Materials Yarn: Needles: 330 yards of bulky yarn that knits at gauge of 10 sts/4”. I used 6 skeins On Line Montana (a yarn from my stash that is no longer available). Montana is a loosely spun, single ply yarn, that is 50% wool and 50% nylon. Size US #11 K 10 rows in garter st (end with WS row – 5 garter ridges appear on RS). First band of faux entrelac pattern is completed [1 SQ wide]. At BEG of next row (RS), CO 7 sts, using knitted caston; then K to end of row [14 total sts]. At BEG of next row (WS), CO 7 sts, using knitted caston; then K7, P7, K7 [21 total sts]. The foundation row for the second band of faux entrelac (3 SQs wide) has been established. REP the following 2 rows until the second band has 5 garter ridges appearing on the RS: RS rows: K. WS rows: K7, P7, K7. Second band of faux entrelac pattern is completed [3 SQs]. At BEG of next row (RS), CO 7 sts, using knitted caston; then K to end of row [28 total sts]. Size The scarf is 9” by 84” without blocking. Abbreviations BEG = beginning; BO = Bind Off; CO = Cast On; K = Knit; P = Purl; REP = repeat; RS = Right Side; SQ = square(s); ST = Stitch(es); WS = Wrong Side. At BEG of next row (WS), CO 7 sts, using knitted cast-on; then K7, P7, K7, P7, K7 [35 total sts]. The foundation row for the third band of faux entrelac (5 SQs wide) has been established. By this point, the faux entrelac design should be clearly visible. The first band of the entrelac is a single garter Page 1 stitch square. The second band of the design is 3 squares across – the first in garter stitch, the second in stockinette stitch, and the third in garter stitch. The third band is 5 squares across. Phase 2: Keeping the same width. At beg of next row (RS), CO 7 sts using knitted cast-on (adding 1 new SQ), and K to end of row. At beg of next row (RS), BO 7 sts (reducing 1 SQ), and K to end of row. At beg of next row (WS), BO 7 sts (reducing 1 SQ); K7, P7, K7. Rep the following 2 rows until the band has 5 garter ridges appearing on the RS: RS rows: K. At beg of next row (WS), BO 7 sts (reducing 1 SQ); then K7, P7, K7, P7, K7. WS rows: K7, P7, K7.
