But, as we gather with our families, there remain huge numbers of individuals around the world who are not free: victims of modern day slavery. Most of them are not slaves in the traditional sense of the word, but they are slaves nonetheless. Victims of human trafficking, they are “owned” by others who control their lives and their physical beings and use them for their own service or profit. They are kidnapped, manipulated, abused, controlled, dehumanized, physically assaulted and sometimes killed. This includes not only those who are held hostage by sex traffickers, but also by those who force them to work in agriculture, manufacturing and even domestic labor. The US government estimates that there are upwards of 50,000 people being held as slaves at any one time in this country. Some 15,000-17,000 people are trafficked from overseas into the US each year. Over 21 million are enslaved worldwide. That is an astonishing three out of every 1,000 people on the planet. Among the victims of human trafficking are many individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities, the poor, immigrants and refugees: 26% are children; 22% are enslaved for sexual exploitation; 78% are exploited for labor. Judaism requires us to protect the most vulnerable members of society. In the Torah, God commands us over 36 times to love and protect the stranger. The Torah, Talmud and later rabbinic codes are filled with regulations requiring fair treatment of workers. These include being paid fair wages, being paid on time, protection against hazardous working conditions and prohibitions against charging interest, among others. Jewish tradition teaches that every human being is holy – created in God’s image – and must be treated with love, honor and respect. Jewish law treats sexuality as a sacred bond between loving partners, not to be violated by violence, coercion and profit. As a kid, it was a great opportunity to share some Jewish traditions with my mostly non-Jewish friends who didn’t know matzah from macaroons. Every lunch period at school brought a new opportunity to explain why this day was different from all other days and to introduce people to the tasty treat that is matzah with peanut butter and jelly on it. Reactions ranged from “wow, that’s really good” to “thank goodness I don’t have to eat that!” I must admit that by the 5th or 6th day, there was always significant temptation to try to trade my matzah PB&J sandwich for someone’s cold, leftover spaghetti, but even had I wanted to, I’m not sure I would have found a willing trading partner! As an adult, I’ve come to appreciate the fun that a seder can be, perhaps even more than I did as a kid. Maybe it’s that I no longer have to worry that I’ll be called on to sing the four questions or that I no longer feel like everyone in the room is looking at me when we reach the story of the simple son. Or maybe it’s the four glasses of grape juice that are now replaced with wine. Please remember that even at this late date, we occasionally have members of our congregational family or our community who do not have a place to go for seder. If you have room at your table, please let a member of our clergy know. In the meantime, Laura and I wish all of you a chag kasher v’sameach, and we hope you have fun and meaningful seders! The month of April will also feature the return of three of my favorite things about summer. First, many of our congregants who spend the winter months in warmer climates will return to Cleveland, and I look forward to welcoming all of you home. We’ve missed you! Second, the Cleveland Indians begin their season, and, at least until that first game, are tied for first place in their division! And finally, April 17 will bring the return of our very popular Shabbat Rocks! Friday night service. Whether you’ve attended in the past or not, I encourage you to give it a try! The band is great, the music is upbeat and inspiring, and it always leads to kids of all ages quite literally dancing in the aisles. I look forward to seeing you all there! As the meal ends, the search for the afikoman begins. Most families have an adult hide it and children search for it. Sometimes, we hide one large piece, while others break the matzah into as many pieces as there are children. In other homes, it is the children who hide the matzah and the adults search. Whoever finds the hidden matzah has great negotiating power since the seder cannot end until the afikoman is eaten. Prizes are distributed and many families use games, puzzles or books with Jewish themes. Iraqi Jews have a slightly different custom, tying the afikoman to the back of a child to stay awake and guard it, while the other children wait for the guardian to nod off and snatch the matzah. Whoever holds the matzah at the end of the seder wins the prize for being the best guardian. Nearly 2,000 years ago, Rabbi Elazar in the Talmud taught, “Snatch one matza from the other, in order to make sure the children do not fall asleep.” (Pesachim 109a). It was important for the rabbis that all seder participants (young and old) stay awake and engaged in the experience of reliving the Exodus from Egypt. This game of hide and seek is among that strongest of Jewish memories that children hold onto throughout their lives. The concept of eating a last bite after dinner and dessert is connected to the Paschal sacrifice, which in Temple times was eaten at the end of the meal and could only be eaten in one location. The name afikoman is found in the Mishnah and is thought to be derived from the Greek word, epikomon, which referred to a drinking party. It was Greek custom to end a festive meal by visiting other friends’ homes to drink and talk all night long. The rabbis did not see the seder in the same light as a big social outing. As Rabbi Jonathan Sacks describes, the afikoman was meant “to finish the evening with the taste of holy food in one’s mouth.” Eating the matzah at your home table to conclude the sacred meal marks a clear distinction between Jewish and Greek values, holiness as opposed to hedonism. The rabbis wanted the taste of matzah to linger in our mouths. This holy hide and seek game reminds us of the need to search for that which is missing in our lives. There are no guarantees that we may find what we are looking for. And yet, sometimes just a bite of Passover dessert or a small piece of the dry, crumbling matzah can bring completion and satisfaction. May we each find the hidden treasures in our family and home this Passover. Hag Kasher v’Sameach from my family to yours. Rabbi Hal Rudin-Luria Joel Joel Herman 440-461-6262 Herman Joel Herman 440-461-6262 440-461-6262 www.bnaijeshurun.org April 2015 Nisan/Iyar 5775 3 Education & Youth Passover: Experiential Education at its Finest Among the strongest trends in schools today is a move towards experiential education, developing methods of teaching where students learn by doing and gain understanding through their experiences. With opportunities such as the G-dcast studio, where our pre-B’nai Mitzvah students create their own animated video on a weekly Torah portion, to immersive experiences like our Youth Shabbaton at Camp Wise, to the Shtetl project where our 7th and 8th grade students recreate shtetl life right here in northeast Ohio, unique experiences help guide our students’ Jewish journeys here at B’nai Jeshurun. Yet, as we work to develop more experiential learning for students and families, it’s easy to forget that the Jewish people have been practicing experiential education for millennia, long before it was trendy. What have we been doing? Maybe you’ve heard of it, it’s called the Passover seder. The seder is the quintessential educational experience. Rather than simply telling a story, we become part of the story. We eat bitter herbs to recall the bitterness of our slavery, we dip parsley in salt water to remind us of the tears of our ancestors, and we eat matzah to remember our hurried departure from Egypt. We sing songs, place symbolic foods on our seder plate and declare we are obligated to feel as though we personally came out of Egypt. And there are so many ways we can build on that experience. The Talmud teaches us we do things differently at the seder precisely so we will ask questions and learn more. We are encouraged to keep people on their toes so they will always be asking. So, as we continue to build our experiential programs throughout the year here at B’nai Jeshurun, I encourage you to add a custom or two to your seder this year that will help enrich the experience. Perhaps you can adopt the Afghani ritual of getting green onion stalks for each person and playfully hitting one another during ‘Dayenu’ to remember the taskmasters in Egypt. Or you could adopt the Egyptian custom of wrapping your matzah in a sack and walking around the table to represent the physical journey out of Egypt. You can add songs or readings, or you can act out the story in costume! In place of (or in addition to) awarding a prize to the person who finds the afikomen, you can let the finder choose a cause to support and donate to tzedakah. And we can even give our children the opportunity to create their own ritual to share at the seder. GUCI campers and staff create an atmosphere where Jewish heritage, history and values are celebrated and lifelong friendships are created. Our Isaiah congregant, Rabbi Melinda Mersack, is the Cleveland GUCI Representative. She and husband, Mark Jacobs’, children have enjoyed many wonderful summers there. Isaiah, age 12, tells us, “I like climbing the migdal (65’ alpine climbing tower) because it’s challenging and fun. While climbing, your cabin cheers you Eli on, and everyone wants you to reach the top.” His brother, Eli, age 10, says, “I like Shabbat at camp because it’s a special day. Friday night we celebrate with a special service, dinner, song session, Israeli dancing and a bonfire. Saturday is a free day and I play lots of sports with my friends.” Many children from B’nai Jeshurun will be heading to overnight camp in a couple short months. We hope your child is one of them! Whether an outright gift today, a planned giving tool like a gift annuity, or a bequest upon one’s passing, endowed support of B’nai Jeshurun ensures a lasting legacy and an enduring impact. Appreciated stocks, life insurance policies and retirement plans can be wonderful tools for combining your philanthropic wishes and tremendous tax benefit. You can still dedicate a paver in the rejuvenated Linden Family Courtyard! Make your dedication by April 30, 2015 to be installed Spring 2015. Courtyard pavers provide a lasting way to: • Honor a family member or friend • Pay tribute to a loved one • Recognize a special event, wedding, Bar/Bat Mitzvah or milestone birthday Contact development director Kim Cole to learn more about our endowment campaign plans and how you can be a part of it!
