Is There A Future For
Local Motor Shows?
y the time of publication, we’ll be
just days out from the Collision
Repair Expo. I trust you’ve been
preparing for the show – making lists of
who to visit and what products to check
out. I can assure you the companies
getting ready to exhibit have been just as
busy – getting freshly developed products
from factories and onto the show floor
in time, producing brochures, maybe
even flying staff in from manufacturers
overseas for demonstrations. The show
will be action packed when it begins but
the action is happening even before we all
hit the ground running down in Melbourne.
Speaking of which, this is something I
myself am looking forward to – hitting the
ground running! I’m really excited about
meeting all of our industry suppliers and
you our readers as well. We have a large
display stand (AA1) where you could come
and see me, but I’ll also be roving around
the show checking everything out, so do
say hello if you bump into me!
W
hile we’re on the subject of
exhibitions, when was the last
time you went to a car show?
Not a parts or repair exhibition, but one for
new cars? If you’ve travelled overseas it
might have been recently, but in Australia
it’s been three years now since we’ve
been through those massive halls full
of beautiful exhibition spaces with their
exquisite designs and row upon row of car
models and variants. While we all enjoyed
going with family and friends to sit in
each car and check them out thoroughly,
the car manufacturers were actually
getting more and more stressed. It was
costing them hundreds of thousands,
even millions of dollars in some cases to
cover the cost of designing, shipping and
putting the stands together, let alone the
maintenance of the cars during the show
(keeping them squeaky clean after being
touched by hordes of children) and then
disassembling the stands at the end.
One other problem – over time we had
become disinterested in motor shows.
Entry prices continued to increase and
thus show attendance decrease. Soon,
manufacturers were really having trouble
recouping their investments. In 2013,
manufacturer patience had run thin and
one by one, they began dropping out of
the only show we had – the Australian
International Motor Show – that was due
to be held in Melbourne in March that
year. Sadly, the show was canned and
since then we haven’t seen any form of
replacement...until just recently.
From the ashes that was AIMS came
something new called the Australian
Motoring Festival. It wasn’t your usual
kind of motor show – this one was being
promoted with a new format, something
that had more interaction and was further
family friendly than what had come before.
This time we wouldn’t just look and sit in
the cars, but interact with them more. Play
with them and drive them on purpose-built
test tracks. The idea was brilliant.
Sadly, most of the manufacturers were
extremely cautious after losing so much
money on existing shows. In the end, only
six of them took the plunge and placed
their bets – Ferrari, Isuzu, MercedesBenz, Toyota, Volvo and local ATV builder
TOMCAR. Perhaps because of this, the
show didn’t quite get the attendance it
wanted – only 25,000 people over the four
days it was run (26-29 March at Melbourne
Showgrounds) against a target of 50,000.
Apparently representatives from other car
companies did go down and take a look,
but they would have seen rather empty
passageways and halls – not exactly the
best way to sell a show.
Nonetheless management was rather
upbeat, with VACC executive director
Geoff Gwilym saying he was pleased with
the results and taking time to point out
some hard competition the event was up
against on the same weekend, such as
the ICC Cricket World Cup and two other
exhibitions.
One could argue that the struggles of
motor shows in Australia come down to
the internet – if we want to look at a car we
can just pull up the manufacturer’s website
and check out specs, pictures, even video.
We can go to review websites and read
critics’ thoughts or even go to forums
and read other users’ experiences. We
can open up YouTube and find countless
video reviews of every little thing in the
car. There’s so much information now that
you will inevitably ask yourself – why pay
money to go into a hall, sit in the car and
go home? Good point really.
But still, ideas like the Australian
Motoring Festival are noble ones. There
were lots of activities for kids to enjoy,
while car enthusiasts got to check out
a very nice classic car display that you’d
never have encountered in your usual
motor show. Ferrari’s section went beyond
what you’d typically have – going as far as
to call it a ‘pavilion’, it was an homage to
everything Ferrari with a large variety of
both new and classic vehicles from the
Prancing Horse.
With more support from more
manufacturers
(and
perhaps
less
competition from other events on the
same weekend), I’m sure the Australian
Motoring Festival can certainly draw in
the crowds and be successful enough to
ensure its survival for years to come. Let’s
see what happens next year!

Storage Fees Are Destined To Be Outlawed
A
ruling in the New South Wales
Supreme Court has sounded the
death knell to storage fees levied
by shops that receive cars as a result of a
tow-truck pick up at an accident.
In handing down her judgement on
the case between NRMA Insurance
and Maroubra Automotive Refinishers,
Supreme Court Justice Lucy McCallum
rejected
Maroubra
Automotive
Refinishers’ contention that under NSW
legislation, when tow truck operators
nominate a repairer before towing a car,
it implied a contract was formed between
the tow truck operator, the customer and
a repairer.
Justice McCallum said the legislation
specifically banned tow truck operators
seeking authorisation on repairers’ behalf.
The NSW Supreme Court found that
the repairer could not detain the vehicle
pending payment of towing and/or storage
fees; there was no contract between the
repairer and the owner for the repairer to
store the vehicle in exchange for payment

of storage fees; the Tow Truck Industry
Act did not assist the repairer in trying to
create a contract between the repairer and
the owner for storage of either vehicle;
the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Code of
Conduct did not assist the repairer in trying
to create a contract between the repairer
and the owner for storage of either vehicle
and each owner was entitled to damages
for the period after they had demanded
the return of their vehicle up to when they
received it back. The NSW Supreme Court
has ruled smash repairers do not have the
right to charge storage fees while holding
customers’ vehicles.
The law in NSW states that if a repairer
in NSW receives a vehicle from a tow
truck driver, yet does no repair work on
the vehicle and has no direct dealings –
let alone an agreement – with the owner
of the vehicle regarding storage fees, or
withholds the vehicle pending payment of
storage fees, the repairer cannot detain
the vehicle once the owner makes a
demand for its return.

Ford Mondeo, Toyota Prius V and
Lexus NX Score 5 Stars Each
ANCAP has announced 5 star ANCAP
safety ratings for the Ford Mondeo,
Toyota Prius V and Lexus NX. These
ratings extend across all current model
variants.
The new Ford Mondeo due for launch in
Australia and New Zealand in the coming
months scored highly.
It comes equipped with a long list
of safety features including side headprotecting (curtain) airbags for front and
second row seats, inflatable rear seat
belts, smart key, trailer stability control
and automatic emergency call (Australian
models only) as standard.
manufacturers to make this life-saving
technology standard on all variants.
The seven-seat Toyota Prius V hybrid
people mover also passed ANCAP
assessment with flying colours, achieving
high scores in all physical crash tests
and providing a broad range of standard
key safety features. This has enabled all
variants of the Prius V built from 2012 to
earn the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety
rating.
All three models qualify for a 2015
ANCAP date stamp. The purpose of the
date stamp is to clearly communicate to
consumers the year requirements against
which a model has been assessed.
“The Toyota Prius V has excellent
family car credentials,” said ANCAP Chief
Executive Officer, Nicholas Clarke. “It has
side head-protection (curtain airbags) and
seat belt reminders for all three rows,
reversing camera, and provides excellent
pedestrian protection.”
All variants of the Lexus NX launched
late last year also meet the same 5 star
level of safety.
Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
is available for all three models but only
on higher-priced variants. While this
is commendable, ANCAP encourages
Earlier date stamps indicate a model has
been assessed to earlier, less stringent,
standards.
“With ANCAP’s annual increases to
requirements, ANCAP reminds consumers
to look for two simple things when buying
their next car. First, look for 5 stars.
Second, look for a model which has the
latest ANCAP date stamp. That way you
can be assured you’re buying one of the
safest cars possible,” said Clarke.
ANCAP is supported by all Australian
and New Zealand motoring clubs, the
Australian Government, the New Zealand
Government, Australian state and territory
governments, the Victorian Transport
Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance
and the FIA Foundation.
Crystal Clear Future
Complete Body Craft’s second year
apprentice Crystal McLaren scooped the
pool at last year’s GoTafe Awards, taking
home the award for Outstanding 2nd Year
Apprentice (Paint). McLaren commenced
her spray painting apprenticeship with
Complete Body Craft in 2013, and is
developing into a top notch tradesperson.
Having also been awarded a Suncorp
Apprentice Scholarship in 2013 has
assisted her financially and also provided
her with ongoing support and guidance.
“Taking on an apprenticeship was a huge
step for me,” said McLaren. “Until then I’d
been living at home and going to school
full time. Getting this opportunity meant
moving away from home and friends, but
it’s what I really want to do.” McLaren has
met all challenges so far with her trademark
tenacity, can-do attitude and a bright smile.
Complete Body Craft, based in Rutherglen
in north east Victoria, commenced business
in 2000 with just two staff, offering car
smash repairs and towing only. Growth
has seen the business now expand to 17
employees, including McLaren, and seen
their offer also expand to include truck

smash repairs, refurbishment and towing.
Working alongside four fully qualified
painters also provides McLaren with the
guidance needed in what is becoming
an increasingly complex industry, and
Crystal is looking forward to being part of
the workshop’s new shift to waterborne
products.
Chris and Fiona Bourke, owner/
managers of Complete Body Craft, wish
Crystal McLaren all the best for continued
success. “Getting fully qualified staff in
the smash repair industry is becoming
harder and harder,” said Fiona Bourke.
“So encouraging younger employees by
offering apprenticeships is a win-win. We
get to give someone a start, and we get to
guide and help them develop their talents,
plus we get to fill some of the gaps in our
workshop.”

“Where technology meets performance”
Updates to the MVBPIRI
Market Research Report
A combination of safer new vehicles and
more risk-averse drivers has reduced
vehicle
accidents
and
decreased
demand for the industry’s services.
For this reason, industry research firm
IBISWorld has updated its report on the
Motor Vehicle Body, Paint and Interior
Repair industry in Australia.
The Motor Vehicle Body, Paint and Interior
Repair industry relies on vehicle accidents to
generate revenue. According to IBISWorld
industry analyst David Whytcross, “A
combination of safer new vehicles and
more risk-averse drivers has reduced vehicle
accidents and decreased demand for the
industry’s services.” New car sales have
remained strong following a big spike after
the global financial crisis, meaning that more
consumers drive vehicles with advanced
safety features. As fewer consumers have
traded-in or disposed of their older vehicles,
the average age of the domestic vehicle
fleet has remained stable over the past five
years. However, the increasing modernity
of the vehicle fleet has meant that more
vehicles have improved safety features,
reducing collisions. As a result of these
factors, industry revenue is forecast to fall
by a compound annual rate of 0.2 per cent
over the five years through 2014-15, to be
worth $7.1 billion.
Revenue is estimated to decline by 1.8
per cent in 2014-15, continuing the slow
descent that began in 2011-12. Although
the number of vehicle crashes has declined
in most years, minimising revenue volatility,
it is the growing power of insurance
companies within the industry that is
significantly reducing industry revenue.
Most smash repairers rely on insurance
claims to gain work, which makes obtaining
preferred smash repairer agreements with
insurance companies essential to ensure
new customers. The falling number of motor
vehicle accidents has reduced demand
for industry services and enabled insurers
to pay smash repairers less, contributing
to the revenue decline. Similar trends are
expected to affect the Motor Vehicle Body,
Paint and Interior Repair industry over the
next five years. New cars will have even
more advanced safety features installed
to help drivers avoid crashes. The average
age of the vehicle fleet is projected to
remain steady, meaning that consumers
will be driving increasingly modern vehicles
as time passes. “Insurance companies are
expected to continue entering the industry
with chains or joint ventures of their own,
increasing their revenue but pushing down
prices”, says Whytcross.
The industry is fragmented due to its
ease of entry. This ensures that there
are always new entrants to the industry
when profit margins are sufficient. The
majority of enterprises tend to only hold a
small share of the market and are unable
to gain significant economies of scale.
This situation is changing with an exodus
of smaller operators, such as working
proprietors. The proportion of working
proprietors to total establishments is
estimated to have declined over the past
five years. This has been partially due to
the exit of working proprietors from the
industry and the expansion of franchises,
which has slightly pushed up market share
concentration.
2015 Suncorp/ABN TAFE Equipment &
Training Grants – NOW OPEN
TAFE Colleges around the nation are
invited to apply for grants to fund
equipment and training as part of the
2015 SUNCORP/Australian BodyShop
News TAFE Grants.
A total of $40,000 is being offered to
help TAFE Colleges stay up to date with
the latest vehicle technology and repair
standards. Previous grants have funded
teacher training, escribe licenses, and vital
equipment such as welders.
Suncorp National Industry Development
Manager, Rob Bartlett, said: “The
industry’s future rests on the training
received by apprentices. Since 2001, we
have been able to award nearly a quarter
of a million dollars in grants to support
the next generation of vehicle repairers.
We are very pleased to offer this funding
to ensure students have access to high
quality equipment and training.”
“It’s always a pleasure to relaunch the
SUNCORP/BodyShop News TAFE Grants,”
said ABN publisher Michel Malik. “When
ABN originally decided to support the
apprentices and the very valuable TAFE
12
BodyShopNews.net | April 2015
colleges, we did not expect the response
and reaction to last all these years. The
feedback we have received since the
inception of the programme has been both
unexpected and satisfying. “The continuing
shortages of apprentices and trained
technicians in this industry can be assisted
by making their training more relevant and
in tune with current technologies.”
“I would encourage every TAFE college
to look to its equipment levels and
nominate areas where they may be behind.
Every TAFE teacher out there must have a
wish list, and here is the way to help fill it.
To apply for the 2015 grants, simply
provide:
• A brief outline of the equipment or
training you wish to purchase;
• A quote for the equipment or training;
and
• A short description of how it will be
used to benefit body repair and spray
painting apprentices.
Applications should be emailed to:

Spanesi Completes Its

Spanesi Americas announced the
expansion of its building footprint
by doubling both the warehouse and

The expansion project includes an
addition to its existing office building,
expansion of the warehouse dedicated
to storing parts for spray booths and
measuring systems as well as the
dedication of a single area to training
on all of the products. Additional dock
and loading areas have been expanded
to address the need for loading multiple
simultaneous shipments. This expansion
comes on the heels of an overwhelming
response to the company’s products,
processes, and training systems.
Repair markets were looking for and
the response has been extraordinary!”
said Tim Morgan, Managing Director for
Spanesi Americas. “This has allowed us
to be able to expand our facility in such
a short time to meet the needs of our
customers.”
With its focus on products that are
growing fastest in the market, Spanesi
expects to increase overall shipment
capacity by nearly 20 per cent, while
adding approximately 35 jobs in North
America.
The company has also increased
inventory to enhance its just in time

Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim
Plant to Become High-Tech
Daimler is comprehensively modernising
the Mercedes-Benz plant in StuttgartUntertürkheim, and is transforming
the location with its rich history into a

centre of competence for highly efficient
engines, hybrid powertrains and the
production of fuel cell systems.
From June 1, the plant will assume
responsibility for a facility in Nabern, in the
greater Stuttgart area, where assembly of
the company’s fuel cell system will take
place.
At Daimler, the electrification of the
powertrain has long been on the agenda
with regard to the future of mobility. The
company already offers a wide range
of battery-electric vehicles and hybrids
around the world. The plug-in hybrid
will be the front-running technology for
the next decade at least. With the S 500
and C 350, a total of 10 new MercedesBenz plug-in hybrid models will be on the
market by 2017. In addition to introducing
more battery-electric models in the next
few years, Daimler continues to pursue
the aim of bringing to market competitive
electric vehicles powered by fuel cells.
The traditional production of engines,
transmissions, axles and components
at the plant will be comprehensively
realigned, and further capacities will
be added. The focus of the efforts to
streamline and modernise the product
portfolio is to keep in-house products with
competitive relevance and to assign other
tasks to suppliers.
Italy’s Biggest
Automotive
Aftermarket Show
Autopromotec has stamped its mark in Europe as one of
the most specialised international exhibitions of automotive
equipment and aftermarket products.
Autopromotec is a unique biennial show in Italy that deals
with automotive equipment, accessories, services and products,
automotive technologies and solutions, parts and tools, heavy and
light machineries and all automotive devices and components.
Over the years, the event has emerged to be a great platform that
has given birth to several business connections and networking
opportunities.
The last show – Autopromotec 2013 – was characterised by
more than 1500 exhibitors of whom nearly 600 came from 52
different foreign countries; a large covered area of more than
135,000 square metres supplemented by an outdoors area of
20,000 square metres and a high visitor turnout of more than
102,000 with nearly 20,000 internationals.
On the collision side, there was a large number of spray booth
manufacturers exhibiting (CMC, Polini, Nova Verta, USI Italia,
Saima, etc.) and straightening bench equipment (Car-O-Liner,
Globaljig, Celette, Blackhawk, etc.). Pro Spot International had a
team from their USA headquarters on hand to lend support to the
European side, while paint companies were thin on the ground
represented by Akzo Nobel, Mipa and Kapci Coatings. Three spray
gun manufacturers were on hand, SATA, Walcom and Anest Iwata
and a multitude of other suppliers such as Festool, sia Abrasives,

Connected Vehicles Are Here
ackground to the story: At the April
2014 meeting of the Collision Industry
Conference (CIC) John Bosin, then
with AkzoNobel, gave a special presentation
called Data Privacy & the Connected Car.
In July 2014, concurrent with the NACE
Exposition and Conference, I-CAR held
a daylong conference entitled Driving
Excellence in Technology. As part of the
Advanced Electronics, Communications
and Safety session, well known industry
consultant
Sean
Carey,
Founder
and President of SCG Management
Consultants’, spoke about Vehicle Data:
Reinventing the Claims Process.
Over a year ago a group of automotive
and collision repair industry stakeholders
established the Telematics Task Force
http://telematics.freesite.host.
US Senator Edward Markey recently
released a report entitled Tracking & Hacking:
Security & Privacy Gaps Put American
Drivers at Risk (www.markey.senate.gov/
imo/media/doc/2015-02-06_MarkeyReportTracking_Hacking_CarSecurity%202.pdf.].
On March 10, 2015 a class action
lawsuit was filed in US District court
against Toyota, Ford and GM, and recently
CBS’ popular 60 Minutes TV programme,
assisted by the US government Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency
(DARPA), illustrated how a hacker can
‘hijack’ your car by taking over the controls
while you are driving (www.cbsnews.com/
news/car-hacked-on-60-minutes) .
If you’re a little baffled by all of that, so was
I. However, it is more than just buzz. It turns
out that technology designed to enhance car
safety and provide a variety of conveniences
to vehicle owners has resulted in unintended
consequences – at least for consumers.
Apparently the cost of this technology comes
with a price: privacy. Connected vehicles are
here and with them, data privacy issues and
the possibility of hacking.
The class action suit against Toyota, Ford
and GM alleges that the car companies:
“...failed consumers – in all of these areas–
when they sold or leased vehicles that are
16

BodyShopNews.net | April 2015
susceptible to computer hacking and are
therefore unsafe. Because the Defendants
failed to ensure the basic electronic security
of their vehicles, anyone can hack into
them, take control of the basic functions
of the vehicle, and thereby endanger the
safety of the driver and others.”
How did we get into this situation?
On Board Diagnostics (OBD), first
introduced in the 70s and 80s as a means
of meeting US Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) standards, opened the door
for some of the connectivity issues we
confront today. In the mid-1990s the OBD II
standard, which “provides almost complete
engine control and also monitors parts of
the chassis, body and accessory devices,
as well as the diagnostic control network
of the car.” was introduced. (Source: www.
obdii.com/background.html#What)
OBD II resulted in an entirely new vehicle
concept, what we now call ‘telematics’. In
very simple terms ‘telematics’ is about the
ability of a car to transmit and receive data.
As illustrated in the Class Action Suit
allegations, data privacy is a real concern
today. Dan Risley, ASA President & Executive
Director says that people generally think
about telematics as involving self-braking
systems, driver-assist steering, GPS and
diagnostics. But they rarely consider
how much data telematics enables the
car companies and other interested
stakeholders to collect. For example, by
setting up the hands-free calling system
in your car, you could end up sharing all
of your contacts and other proprietary
information – possibly even passwords or
access to your bank accounts and health
records. GPS settings include your home
address. If the appropriate spyware data
protection software has not been installed
or your settings have not been set up
properly others may be able to access this
info. Unanswered questions remain, such
as: Can the vehicle manufacturer obtain
your private data? What happens to your
data when you sell the car? How is the data
deleted? How are these issues addressed
with subsequent owners?
Telematics is of growing importance
as vehicle manufacturers increase the
capabilities of sensors and systems
in new vehicles. Everyone agrees that
concerns involving telematics can only be
resolved if all industry stakeholders work
together. Earlier this year ASA hosted and
moderated a standalone meeting focused
on the impact of emerging technologies
– including telematics – on all sectors of
the automotive industry. More than 60
people representing every segment of the
automotive industry attended, among them:
representatives of independent service and
repair shops, parts manufacturers, parts
distributors, information providers, tool and
equipment manufacturers, associations and
11 different car manufacturers.
The goal of the meeting was to bring
interested stakeholders together for a
dialogue about the issues surrounding
automotive telematics and their impact
on automotive service, collision repair and
insurance. The group is planning a similar
stakeholder meeting sometime during the
first half of 2015.
I knew that there would be challenges
involved in repairing vehicles with rapidly
evolving technology. I expected the problems
to involve access issues such as special
repair procedures and codes, the need for
dedicated equipment, training and more. But
until recently I never thought about hacking
or data privacy as they relate to my car – and
virtually 100 per cent of new cars on the
market today. In the grand scheme of things,
repair challenges may be minor.

The Geneva Motor Show has always been the venue where car
manufacturers in Europe launch their new creations as well as
their future concepts. A regular to the Show has been Auto Industry
Consulting’s Andrew Marsh, who generously penned this report.
T
here is a growing gap between each
new vehicle announcement and
the quality of the data behind it to
support collision repair. Sure, some vehicle
manufacturers are better than others, but
the pace of engineering development
combined with model upgrades or new
model introductions is really straining
everything everywhere. Some OEMs are
still so cash strapped from the dip of 20082012 that just hanging onto market share
is the first priority. The economic hole has
led to a gaggle of extended model life
cycles, major facelifts and in some cases
deletion of the replacement vehicles.
An annual motor show is an odd beast.
It is a brilliant way to see lots of new
introductions under one roof in a few
hours, to make the call if an ‘all new’ car
is really yet another facelift and more.
However two factors have affected the
major shows in Europe – on-line launches
give the headlines weeks or even months
ahead of anyone seeing a vehicle in
the metal, whilst the second shift was
towards the biggest as well as wealthiest
automotive market place on earth...China.
DELAYS, DELAYS, DELAYS...
Let’s look at two manufacturer groups
– Renault and Peugeot. The former has
had stable sales from Megane III since
2008, but the car which should have been
replaced by 2011 has been facelifted three
times...so far. Meanwhile Peugeot are
emerging from the stress of over intensive
family control, and chose to finally launch
Aston Martin Vulcan.
18
BodyShopNews.net | April 2015
their latest brand – DS – at Geneva with
a DS5 featuring revised bumpers along
with revised interior trim. Hardly earth
shattering. Indeed, Renault’s aspiration to
build luxury cars has all but died and the
5th generation of Espace got through after
one project cancellation and six years of
delays by being re-positioned as a MPV/
SUV cross-over.
The life-cycle of a model programme (the
time the model is in production) has shifted
from distinct phases to extensions, so
allowing the core investment to produce
pure profit way past the break-even point.
Both Renault and Peugeot produced ‘old’
models alongside ‘new’ introductions in
the past but now it has become the very
latest automotive industry mainstream
to extend the production life of a model
range, at a time where the investment in
design/development has largely been paid
off.
LOTS OF NEW MODELS –
BUT WHICH ARE REALLY NEW?
Aside from the marketing cycle
which helps in part to define a new
model programme and how long that
model should remain in production,
manufacturers are obligated to meet new
legislative standards. The main areas of
legislative activity have centred around
powertrain emissions and safety – but
the former is changing faster than the
latter. So from time to time a vehicle
manufacturer will introduce a range of
confusion over voice activated commands)
has already started roll out in the USA.
Honda – placed the work horses (3rd
gen Jazz and Jazz based HR-V) away
from the stars. The Honda Civic Type R
attracted seat warmers all day, as did the
rather slowly developed NSX. The latter is
still in shock having conducted a 3 year
public R&D programme whilst Ford kept
the GT secret – and blew its doors off.
Hyundai – all new Tucson, to replace
the ix35. On view – conventional power,
48V micro hybrid ‘concept’, hybrid and
hydrogen fuel cell powered versions.
Mainstream will remain petrol or diesel
powered.
Audi Q7 e-tron.
Audi Q7 e-tron powertrain.
all new powertrain options or powertrain
upgrades to an existing product line,
knowing that these will move across
to the replacement model at a later
point. The ‘new’ trend which has been
underway for the past two years is to
make quite a big fuss about those major
powertrain investments by describing the
vehicle as ‘all new’.
Aston Martin – ever seen someone
trying way too hard? Not only was the
saloon edition of Rapide there (the Lagonda
Tarak) but also a track special called Vulcan
and...an SUV. So the stand was simply
huge, right? Erm, no. So the releases were
carefully timed and well ordered? Erm, no.
Just remember the Lagonda Tarak was for
Middle Eastern customers only but is now
opened to other world markets, the V12
engine is shot (needs much more cash or
replacement), the V8 engine is going too,
there are new engines coming from AMG
by 2016 and the new VH architecture by
then too. So in little over a year there will
be nothing left of the current line-up. So
why have so many distractions now?
Audi – the Q7 has already shown in
Detroit, but this was the first time the
e-tron had appeared. The significance?
This was the first time the plug-in hybrid
part of the MSB ‘kit’ had appeared, which
will roll out across the Volkswagen Group.
The R8 reveal was a global first, but
then again, it is an evolution with many
features declared/shown in the previous
year. Missing – the new Audi A4 (next gen
MLB).
Bentley showed the EXP 10 Speed
6 – which is the sub-Continental GT
range which will use the Family MSB
architecture. As will the Bentley SUV, now
called Bentayga – the SUV goes on sale
in 2016 and the coupe will follow within a
year or two after that.
Fiat – almost a big zero. True the Alfa
Romeo 4C Spider was on show, as was an
uprated Abarth 695 biposto and the Doblo
Cargo facelift. Pretty thin.
Ford – sport all the way. From the second
generation GT (CFRP intensive tub) to
the much awaited all-wheel drive Focus3
RS, backed up by the revised Focus3 ST
range and the arrival of the RHD Mustang
by September 2015. Stand decoration
featured a Sierra Cosworth, Ford Escort
Mk1 Mexico and a Ford GT40 MkIII – just
so we all got the message. Oddly Sync II is
available in Europe whereas the superior
Sync III system (better software, less
JLR – the Jaguar XE has already had its
coming out party as has the Land Rover
Discovery Sport. So the news? Defender.
It is fully expected to have a record
production year as customers around the
globe take the last chance to buy a vehicle
which always comes with its own unique
water features, odd spot weld pitch and
randomly applied pop rivets. The last of
the hand built Sol-i-hull specials.
Mercedes-Benz – not much that was
new apart from re-naming the entire range
and adding a cross over coupe edition of
Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6.

the car formerly known as GL (just like
BMW did with the X6). However, take
a look at the way plug-in hybrid drive is
spreading across the range like a rash.
No longer will Daimler have to rely on odd
economics of the Smart vehicles to offset
the more profitable larger vehicles.
Mazda have nearly replaced the entire
range, and added a small SUV. Really this
was about the CX-3, the new Mazda2 and
the continuing pre-sales for MX-5.
Mitsubishi – the new L200, which
although has lots of new external panels,
is very much an evolution of the current
Thailand built L200. It has gotten much
longer, and in the process the excess
sheet metal should give repairers plenty
of work in coming years.
Porsche – trim pack derivatives for 991
(GT3 RS) and Cayman (GT4). Missing
– replacement Panamera (MSB) and
Cayenne (MSB).
Renault – introduced the Renault
Qashqai. Or was that the Nissan Kadjar?
Indeed, the hard points of the architecture
show the close relationship with the
second generation Qashqai, and give
Renault an SUV to replace the Nissan X-Trail
T31 based South Korean built and rather
unloved Koleos. Can’t wait for the Renault
Clio III based Nissan Juke re-modelled as
the Renault mini SUV...Oh, wait, isn’t that
what the Dacia Duster is for?
Skoda – the coming out party for the
third generation Superb, which makes the
current Passat seem a bit dull. Only the
saloon appeared, minus the double tailgate
assembly of the second generation.
Subaru – big news is the introduction
of the EyeSight stereo camera based
autonomous braking system which has
finally made it to Europe, 5 years after
it first went on sale in Japan. Otherwise
the Levorg will also be introduced into
Europe having been on sale elsewhere
in the world, to replace the Legacy which
now only appears in the USA and Japan.
Confused? Get this...Levorg is based on...
Legacy!
Toyota – a facelift for the slow-selling
Avensis (its third so far) and a tweak for
the Auris II to bring their front ends into line
with the recently launched Yaris and Aygo.
Auris II is a huge success – especially for
the HSD version – whilst Avensis quietly
waits for its time to come.
Vauxhall – the heavily revised Corsa D
becomes the Corsa E, and the five door
version of the cut down platform becomes
the Vauxhall Viva. All are assured success
regardless of capability, whilst Adam
struggles on having cleared 100,000 units
sold across Europe at least three months
behind schedule. The biggest reveal was
the fully built-in option of OnStar, which
allows seamless access to the internet,
ability to summon assistance or – most
intriguingly – the ability to hide the car
from OnStar if one wants some privacy.
Make no mistake – this is huge, with the
ability to add everything from on demand
insurance through to vehicle condition
monitoring. Vauxhall will not roll out these
options for some time, but the EU call
centre is based in the UK.
Volkswagen – from the major powertrain
revisions to Sharan, to the all-new Caddy
and the all new Touran. The Caddy has
modest engines buried deep inside the
engine bay and so does without a pop up
bonnet, whereas the Touran has a rather
full engine bay with a pop up bonnet.
The ‘concept’ was the next generation
Phaeton (here we go again) which will use
the MSB platform.
Volvo – there was only one show in
town. XC90 has already been shown,
the first edition of 1927 units (yup – the
number of cars reflecting the founding
year of Volvo has already been sold out –
and the order books are full). Pretty rapidly
the new flexible body architecture will
appear as replacements for the V70/XC70,
S60/V60/XC60 and the S80. New bodies,
new multiple choice powertrains and
significantly upgraded driver aids. Volvo is
back in the driving seat.
OVERALL
From the snap shots one can see there
was lots of product and even the now
customary all new Ferrari (488 GTB). There
were the usual Swiss oddities for the super
wealthy who cannot resist buying perfectly
good expensive cars and spending lots of
dosh to remove any trace of good taste
(Mansory to name but one offender).
However the feeling was flat. Sales are
strong, the economy is recovering in most
of the global markets with the exception
of Russia, and all those product ideas are
appearing in public on schedule or more
often than not, somewhat delayed. So
everything is fine?
Not quite. China, even with its slight
economic slow-down, is now the
dominant automotive market. Europe is
not as wealthy, and combined with the
ever increasing pace of new or revised
product launches means there is a real
pull between the time a vehicle is first
seen to the time a customer can go and
collect one. If that delay is too great,
customers will wander off to the next
available product. If that time is too short
the target audience may not take a new
product offering into account.
The result? Mass market confusion and
ever increasing product fragmentation,
which in turn means repairers will face
ever increasing model variations in the
next decade or so. Eventually economics
will come into play and some of the
variations will die out, but that process
has only just got underway. Not good for
process uniformity/volumes, but a major
opportunity due to the greater number
of models on sale for a given volume of
vehicle sales.

When your vehicle body has taken slight cosmetic damage, Smart Repairs
are the techniques best used to fix them efficiently and effectively. While
the term encompasses a variety of repair techniques and applications, they
are arguably a ‘magical’ way to get a car body back to pristine appearance.
ABN Editor Albert Malik takes a look at the world of Smart Repairs.
C
ars endure all forms of stress
over their lives, and sometimes it
can be particularly painful when
you discover the damage. Tiny scratches
from loose gravel or the driver next to
your parking spot who swung his door too
wide, grazed alloy wheels from getting
that little bit too close to the footpath,
or that overnight hailstorm which left
your car looking like a gigantic golf ball
(perhaps a slightly extreme example, but
it’s happened before). The most efficient
and value-for-money way to take care
of cosmetic problems such as these is
what’s called Smart Repairs.
Smart Repairs is an umbrella term for
small, targeted cosmetic repairs that aren’t
structural in nature. Examples include
bumper repairs including scratches,
scrapes and chips; scratch repair including
paint scratches, key scratches and car
park scratches, and minor dent repairs
on both panel and plastic parts. It also
encompasses plastic and trim repair, alloy
wheel refurbishment, air conditioning
repair (in some cases), detailing and
touch-ups.
The key point here (and why they’re
referred to as Smart Repairs) is that you can
repair the exact spot where the damage
occurred, rather than replace the entire
surface or part involved. Whereas in past
times a door scratch necessitated an entire
rub back, priming and respraying, these
days you can just repair the area around the
scratch itself using specialised equipment,
saving time, money, stress and more.
So what equipment allows you to
perform these repairs? We took a look
around at the offerings available today.
NEW SPIES HECKER 1K UV STARLIGHT PRIMER SURFACER
Priming at the

lamps are now more portable and flexible
enough to dry hard to reach areas like door
jams, making UV technology all the more
attractive.
Save time – lose nothing.

D8080 ANSWERS THE NEED-FOR-SPEED
Collision repairers are on the hunt for
faster and more productive products and
processes, particularly when it comes
to smaller, quick turnaround repairs, and
PPG MVP Manager ANZ, Greg Tunks
sees it all the time. While conducting
regular demonstrations around the
region to highlight lean and efficient ‘best
practice’ repair methods, there is one
PPG technology which apparently catches
people’s attention on a regular basis.
“One of the biggest eye-openers is
D8080 UV Cured Primer Surfacer. It’s an
innovative product that’s been available for
quite a while but some repairers are now
recognising its advantage because they’re
looking to be faster and more efficient.
No flash-off and the ability to cure in just
three minutes under an approved ultraviolet
lamp are just two of the huge time-saving
advantages but D8080 has plenty of
other features which help to dramatically
reduce costs. For example, the time-saving
convenience of the aerosol can is all about
cutting cycle-time and reducing material
usage. There’s no need to mix – just shake
it, spray the required area, cure it, then
sand it and the priming/topcoat process
can begin immediately. There’s no waste of
material – just what’s needed for the job –
and time is saved in not having to clean a
mixing container and spray gun. In addition,
the aerosol creates very little overspray
which saves on masking (time, materials
and disposal costs). Amazing film builds can
be achieved – up to 120 microns in a single
application – and when it’s cured, D8080
has a clear, transparent finish so the primer
patch won’t increase the size of the repair
and that saves on top coat application.
“When they see it for the first time,
repairers are generally blown away by
the speed and ease of use of D8080.
Importantly, that speed isn’t just something
that happens in a demo – it’s backed up by
everyday results from customers. Indeed,
that ability to dramatically reduce cycle time
without sacrificing a high quality finish has
made D8080 a tool of choice for major high
volume collision repairers across the region.
For any repairer looking to get ‘primed for
speed’ that makes D8080 an opportunity
that’s simply too good to pass up!”
SATAMINIJET 4400 B
When it comes to maximising profitability
on smaller repairs, choosing the most
efficient products, tools and processes
is essential – and that includes using the
right spray gun. Using a compact spray
gun specifically designed for the job,
such as the SATAminijet® 4400 B, will help
minimise the repair area and the amount
of material used – both of which are crucial
to ensuring the job is profitable.
What’s more, although the SATAminijet®
4400 B is perfect for smaller jobs and
difficult to get at areas, the outstanding
versatility of its design means painters
will find plenty of everyday uses for
it. Because it mirrors the design and
ergonomics of SATA®’s premium, full size
gun – except in a more compact size – the
SATAminijet® 4400 B has quite a large fan
so it reproduces colours very well and
gives excellent colour consistency. It’s
also ideal for clearcoat application – if
required it could clearcoat a whole panel.
For convenience, all gun control elements
can be easily operated while wearing
gloves and the round/flat fan control allows
rapid and precise adjustment of the spray
pattern with just three-quarters of a turn.
It also features a full size QCC (Quick Cup
Connector) so users can take advantage of
SATA®’s full range of ultra-convenient RPS
(Rapid Preparation System) disposable cup
sizes – 300ml, 600ml and 900ml. Painters
have the choice of HVLP (High Volume Low
Pressure) or RP (Reduced Pressure) nozzle
technologies which are both perfect for the
application of all modern paint systems and
deliver exceptional material transfer rates.
For quickly and efficiently tackling smaller
repair jobs, few tools are as effective as the
SATAminijet® 4400 B. Don’t be fooled by
its compact size – it’s big on performance.
It has the feel of a full size SATA® gun,
it produces excellent results just like a
full size SATA® gun and it uses the same
recommended settings as the full size gun,
yet it’s inexpensive to purchase. That makes
it a real asset for any paint technician.

FINIXA POLISHING PROGRAMME
The Finixa polishing programme is a
simple ‘one compound’ system that
offers a fast and cost effective polishing
process. It’s easy to use and produces
outstanding results with some very unique
and important features. Finixa POL 10 is
based on revolutionary nanotechnology
with these features and benefits:
• Can polish very fast, from coarse to very
fine, bringing back gloss degree to 95%
• Stays “wet” for a long time and
minimises the risk on dry powder rests
are for waterborne.
Each dispenser box comes with 50
lids that are individually plastic-wrapped
to prevent any contamination. A range
of FPS adapters are also available for a
wide variety of spray guns to complete a
conversion.
If you are already using the Finixa 650ml
mixing cup, all you need is a box of the
lids, an FPS adapter for your spray gun and
you’re set to go. Features include:
• No paint loss/remainders: the cup can
spray completely empty
• Can be used on old and fresh paints,
2K products, clear coats and the newest
generation of ceramic paints
• Supplied with strainer and valve fitted
• Developed for the renewal of old, faded
headlights
• Applicable to new, modified rubbers
and plastics on modern vehicles without
staining, graining or damaging the typical,
polish-sensitive substrates
• Can be used in a number of different
applications – removing dust, polishing
spray zones, polishing contamination
after sanding and bringing back gloss on
old faded paints. Also good for removing
scratches and blemishes rejuvenating
weathered surface coatings.
Finixa POL 10 can be combined using a
variety of polishing machines, but Finixa
recommends using the POL 55. This
800W polishing machine can be adjusted
continuously from 700 to 2500 RPM and is
fitted with a unique flexible support for the
foam following the contours of the surface
to be polished. If necessary you can polish
eccentrically with this machine or you can
use only the side of the foam to create a
“blending” effect.
The orange and black polishing foam
pads (POL 20 and POL 30) are open cell
foam pads – the orange has a rather solid
structure and the black has a soft structure
– the white polishing foam pad (POL 25)
has a closed cell structure while lamb’s
wool pads (POL 35) are also available.
Most work can be done with the orange
foam pad. The white foam pad can be used
to remove more material faster, while the
fastest way is to use the lamb’s wool pad.
To finish and remove holograms you can
use the black foam pad, which can also
be used eccentrically on the machine to
more easily remove holograms. Finally, the
super soft green Finixa microfibre cloths,
packed in five pieces, are ideal to remove
polish rests and to create a gloss on the
surface.

VALSPAR 1-404 AIR DRY CLEAR
The smash repair market is under constant and
increasing change. Advances in car technology
such as parking sensors, blind-spot sensors and
distance sensors have resulted in safer cars leading
to a reduction in the size of vehicle repairs. In
general, one third of insurance claims are smaller,
cosmetic damages. Many of these damages are
not being claimed and repaired due to consumer
fear of losing their no-claim discount.
A specialised approach is required to effectively
approach this large and growing market segment.
Valspar Automotive has a range of products designed
to meet the needs of the smart repair market. One
such product is DeBeer Refinish 1-404 Air Dry Clear.
DeBeer Refinish 1-404 Air Dry Clear is a fast finishing,
high quality clear coat with “revolutionary” features
enabling body shops to achieve faster turnaround
times, making it suited to the smart repair process.
1-404 Air Dry Clear requires no flash off between
wet-on-wet coats allowing for fast, easy application.
In addition it is dust-free in 10 minutes and is air dry
to nib and polish within 30 minutes. Finally, two coats
achieves 46-56 microns and it has an excellent pot life
of one hour at 25°C. All of these features save body
shops time and energy and increase work throughput.
Benchmarking with other similar products shows
DeBeer Refinish 1-404 Air Dry Clear Coat to be the

LOCTITE 3090
Henkel Australia has launched its new
multi-material adhesive Loctite 3090,
which represents the latest development
in two-component adhesive technology
combining high gap filling properties with
high bond strength and fast cure.
Loctite 3090 not only offers the same
high bond strength and fast cure which
made the Loctite Instant Adhesives an
industry benchmark, but can also fill gaps
up to 5 mm. Users also benefit from
the significantly improved handling: the
clear instant adhesive is a high-viscosity
gel, which allows easier application to
vertical surfaces – without dripping.
Another new feature is the convenient
two-chamber syringe packaging enabling
precise and clean application. Unlike onecomponent systems, Loctite 3090 does
not depend on the moisture in the air to
cure, but has an additional activator. The
two components are dispensed using
one of the seven integrated static mixers
included, to ensure that the components
are always mixed in the right ratio and
that curing is triggered within the defined
timeframe, regardless of humidity and
temperature.

H
All New Honda HR-V
onda’s anticipated HR-V crossover
has arrived in Australia. The HR-V
provides a balance of personal
space, utility and safety. Its unique exterior
design echoes that of a coupé, with sharp,
dynamic lines linking the sleek upper
body with the stable and planted lower
body, achieved without compromising
the interior practicality of the car. Honda
says engineers designed a vehicle with
state-of-the-art technology, contemporary
styling and dynamic performance, with
features such as Electric Parking Brake,
City-Brake Active and three advanced
active safety features being firsts for
Honda in Australia. The company says
safety is paramount and the new HR-V
features Forward Collision Warning,
Lane Departure Warning and High-Beam
Support System. Another safety function
is City-Brake Active, which works at low
speed and provides the driver with visual
and audible warnings if the vehicle in front
brakes suddenly, or automatically applies
braking if required when the driver loses
concentration.
The front-wheel drive HR-V is powered
by a 1.8 litre i-VTEC engine coupled
with Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology
CVT, delivering “exceptional” driving
28

performance and improved fuel economy.
Its low centre of gravity and sedan-like
steering feel make it ideal for bumper-tobumper city traffic or the open road.
The HR-V’s centre fuel tank location
creates one of the most spacious and
adaptable cabins in the small SUV
segment. Honda’s unique Magic Seats –
as found in the Jazz and Civic hatch range
– make use of this versatility by enabling
18 different seating configurations, with
the ability to fold the rear seats completely
flat for added cargo space.
The main features of the HR-V’s body
frame include an inner-frame structure,
highly-efficient floor load path structure
and a new method of body rigidity
analysis. The highly-rigid body frame is a
result of the inner-frame structure that is
made from high tensile steel. In addition,
the front and rear sections of the body
are reinforced to achieve a lightweight
and highly-rigid body that delivers sporty,
linear driving.
The HR-V utilises Honda’s proprietary
Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE)
body-structure technology to enhance
occupant protection and crash compatibility
in frontal collisions. ACE utilises a network
of connected structural elements – with
an improved design and a greater use
of high-tensile steel – to distribute crash
energy more evenly throughout the front
of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash
energy management helps to reduce
the forces transferred to the passenger
compartment and can help to more
evenly disperse the forces transferred to
other vehicles in a crash. ACE also helps
minimise the potential for under-ride or
over-ride situations, such as during headon or offset frontal impacts with a larger or
smaller vehicle.
Unlike most conventional designs
that direct frontal crash energy only to
the lower load-bearing structures in the
front end, ACE actively channels frontal
crash energy to both upper and lower
structural elements, including the floor
frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By
creating specifically engineered pathways
that help distribute these frontal impact
forces through a greater percentage of
the vehicle’s total structure, ACE can more
effectively direct those forces around and
away from the passenger compartment to
help limit cabin deformation and further
improve occupant protection.

Featuring a “bold and distinctive CUVstyle (crossover utility vehicle) design”
and substantially higher quality interior,
the new Carnival offers both greater
use of space and a range of safety and
convenience features not seen in the
model previously.
The new Carnival will offer a pair of
engine packages, a 3.3 litre V6 petrol
engine and 2.2 litre four cylinder turbo
diesel, both combined with a standard sixspeed automatic transmission. Power and
torque figures are 206kW and 336Nm for
the V6, 147kW and 440Nm. It carries over
the previous-generation’s MacPherson
strut front suspension and multi-link rear
suspension; however the adoption of
a hydraulic rebound spring on the front
axle and stiffer suspension bars and
cross-member bush mountings on the
Completely redesigned and built on an
all-new chassis, the Carnival introduces a
wider-looking stance and clean profile – the
front incorporates a wide, upright ‘tigernose’ grille, with wrap-around headlamps
and prominent, framed fog lamps,
giving the car a more modern, imposing
appearance than its predecessor. The
rear carries wide tail lamps, broad metal
surfaces and a glass-area shaped to give
the car “more prominent ‘shoulders’”. The
interior of the new Carnival is a groundup new design, with a cabin made up
of higher quality materials and premium
features and technology. The two-tone
interior features a higher proportion of
soft-touch materials and extends from the
dashboard into the door trims, creating a
premium ambience and consistent design
throughout the cabin.
The new Carnival features a stronger
structure than the outgoing model, with
improved crash safety performance, due
in large part to a far greater proportion
of ultra-high tensile steel – up from
seven per cent of the body shell in the
outgoing model to 52 per cent in the allnew Carnival. A stronger core structure
increases torsional rigidity by 74 per cent,
with the higher tensile strength steel used
to reinforce the engine bay, A-, B-, C- and
D-pillars, roof, rear sub-frame and floor.
Careful application of the stronger steel,
and newly-engineered crash structures
throughout the vehicle, effectively lower
the body shell weight while ensuring
greater safety. The amount of applied
structural adhesives has also been
increased sixty-fold in the third-generation
car, while 830 stronger large-diameter
welding points (the previous model
employed only general welding points)
further improve body shell and chassis
strength.
A range of safety technologies are
available – standard fitment includes
six airbags, electronic stability control
including ABS, traction control, hill start
assist, brake assist, cornering brake
control and roll over mitigation) and rear
parking sensors. Options include lane
departure warning system, blind-spot
detection, lane change assist and rear
cross-traffic alert.
The all-new Kia Carnival is available now
from $41,490 plus on-road costs.
Despite the Carnival’s slightly reduced
height and length, the new model benefits
from greater interior capacity than the
outgoing vehicle, with a longer wheelbase
and a range of features to ensure a more
efficient and flexible use of space for
all occupants. The Carnival majors on

SPECIAL FEATURE OH&S
Creating a safe work environment is critical to the survival of any business and its
employees. Implementing safe practices and equipment require significant investment,
but attempting to cut costs instead can backfire spectacularly and severely. This is why
Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) should never be overlooked, but on the bright side,
extra attention focused here is also one of the best ways to retain staff and maximise
productivity. ABN Editor Albert Malik examines the basics.
B
usiness
owners
have
responsibilities required by law
regarding health and safety in
the workplace. At the most basic level,
directors must ensure the business
doesn’t create health and safety problems
for employees, customers or the public.
Knowing and understanding OH&S laws
will help avoid unnecessary costs and
damage to business caused by workplace
injury and illness. It also provides a strong
foundation to achieve long-term success.
There are some simple steps in reducing
health and safety hazards:
• If you’re aware of a serious safety risk,
have it fixed immediately.
• Assess access methods, especially to
areas above ground.
• Keep all Class 3 flammable liquid
containers (check labels) – including
empties – capped and away from other
fuel loads.
• Ensure all spillages of flammable liquids
are cleaned up immediately.
• Test
all
fire-fighting
equipment
regularly, including mandatory testing of
extinguishers and operating fire hose reel
systems. Is it properly labelled, accessible
and are staff trained in its use?
• Have electrical leads and safety switches
regularly checked and tagged as required.
• Conduct fire drills for all staff.
• Appoint a staff safety representative to
liaise with management.
• Prepare job safety analysis for all tasks
in the shop.
• Clean up rubbish, especially around
entry and exit areas and any flammable,
sharp or otherwise dangerous materials.
• Acquire Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for all potentially hazardous
products on site (available on the web –
simply download and print).
• Ensure all staff members are fully
trained, especially in the use of heavy
equipment such as benches and jigs.
• Keep the first aid kit stocked and
encourage or pay for someone to take
training.

ANEST IWATA AIR FED MASKS
The use of personal protective equipment should form part of a welldeveloped hazard management programme. The Occupational Health
and Safety Act clearly includes breathing air quality as an employer
responsibility, making the use of this type of equipment a priority for
all concerned.
Designed with safety, comfort and hygiene in mind, the AF2100 full
face breathing mask from Anest-Iwata meets the requirements of AS/
NZS1716. The mask is rated as a Class LDH3 safety device, providing a
protection factor of 200 times the occupational exposure limit.
Another important safety feature is that all AF2100 masks are fitted
with double action safety couplings to prevent accidental disconnection
of the air line to the mask.
The Airfed 2100 is supplied with a waist belt and pre-set air regulator

which the filters are replaced will be
determined by many factors, including
the cleanliness of the air supplied, the
type and age of the compressor and the
numbers of hours the system is being
worked each day.

EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY WITH LORI LORENZ*
Can You Answer My Student’s Question?
R
ecently one of my students
asked me a question that I could
not answer with certainty: “The
technician has a 10 years old, top of the
range spot welder and he is working on
a 2014 model car. Before he commences
welding, he performs a series of test welds
and is able to match the OEM nugget size.
Is this acceptable or does he need a new
generation inverter spot welder for this
task?”
My initial thought was most likely similar
to yours, if the nugget size matches the
OEM, it should be OK, but then I had some
second thoughts. Older welders have less
amps and therefore need longer welding
times and that of course translates into
more heat and this in conjunction with
high- and ultra-high strength steel...The
longer I thought about it, the more unsure
I was. So I asked the question on LinkedIn
(similar to Facebook, but for professionals)
and got a lot of opinions, hearsays and
views from very passionate people.
To get a clearer answer, I contacted
Martin Strasser from Wielander and Schill,
a man I have known for some time and
whose knowledge and integrity I value.
He provided the pictures below to
illustrate the problem with older welders
and why they can no longer be used on
modern vehicles.
This is a typical spot weld on a quarter
panel where it is welded to the pillar.
It might look all right to you, but it is a
completely unsatisfactory weld from an
older style spot welder on modern steel.
Please note, the thinner top piece has
not been welded at all, even though
a destructive test between the lower
and the middle panel would reveal a
sizable nugget. The reason for this is
the combination of different steels in
this assembly and explains why older
welders would not be capable of welding
it successfully.
The three steels are similar to what
we find in a centre pillar or sill panel, the
lowest piece is USIBOR ultra hard, the
middle is ZSTE 340 medium hard and the
top piece is soft high grade galvanised.
The problem is that these three metals do
not have the same resistance and the two
high strength pieces have “sucked up” the
welding current so the top piece was not
welded at all.
This is an X-ray of a good spot weld with
a modern spot welder. Again different
steels were used, two ultra hard and a
medium hard high zinc as found in an Audi
Q5 pillar. The three panels have perfectly
fused together.
Modern welders, or as I like to call
them, “Smart Welders”, achieve this with
an inbuilt computer that calculates the
voltage, amps, gun pressure and weld
time for each and every weld. The software
may decide to preheat the metal, then
upslope the current, just blast it with all
the grunt it’s got or any setting in between
and all this is happening in hundredths of
a second.
You might have an older style welder
with comparable amps, but if it cannot
evaluate the resistance and the thickness
of the metals to be welded, and then
calculate the required welding parameters
for each weld, it can only weld two pieces
of the same steel on an older car.
For once, we cannot blame the
insurance companies for this and neither
can we blame the welder manufacturers.
This upgrade is necessary because cars
become more and more complex to repair
and this means that we also need more
and more complex tools and machines to
repair them.
I realise that it is a bitter pill to swallow;
some of these older spot welders have
not yet been paid off and many have not
paid for themselves yet. This is of course
exacerbated by the increasing number
of write offs and it comes down to a
simple business decision. However, if you
continue to repair modern cars, there is no
other option than to upgrade.
So what can you do with your old spot
welder?
Sell the copper wiring for a carton of
beer and use the trolley to make a staff
BBQ.
Jokes aside, perhaps you can sell it to
a sheet metal fabricator or a car restorer,
but there is no point in keeping it in your
workshop. The temptation for a staff
member (or my student) to use it is too
high and the consequences as illustrated
above are just not worth the risk.

Accepting And Planning For The Inevitable
Sometimes Difficult
By Steven Toth*
• Nominate beneficiaries for your estate
and, again, nominate second choice
beneficiaries in case something happens
to the original beneficiaries.
• Understand what assets are covered
by your will. As discussed below,
assets owned by a family trust or your
superannuation fund require separate
documentation.
• Leave bequests as a sum of money or
a percentage of your estate rather than
specific assets, as there is a risk that some
will no longer be owned when the estate
is distributed.
W
hile taxes can be managed
throughout our life, planning
for one’s own death is more
complex and difficult.
The first issue is having a will. When
asked if they have a will, more often than
not people answer ‘no’, and even when
the answer is yes, it is often followed by
‘but it hasn’t been updated for years and
no longer reflects my circumstances’.
Nobody likes to contemplate their
own mortality but not recognising the
inevitable means it is unlikely people will
develop a sensible estate plan. Without
estate planning, the likelihood is that your
hard-earned wealth won’t pass into the
right hands once you’re gone. Inadequate
estate planning can also be a heavy burden
and cost for family members, at an already
distressing time.
A will is the critical first step to ensuring
your estate is distributed according to
your wishes. Without one, the law sets
out who receives the estate and a court
controls distribution.
A well-structured will is therefore the
best safeguard to ensure the wealth you
have built is transferred smoothly.
There are some key points to consider
when preparing a will. These include:
• Nominate executors who are likely to
survive you, who have an understanding
of financial affairs and understand your
wishes clearly. To be on the safe side,
alternative executors should also be
nominated in case the first executor dies
before you.
34
BodyShopNews.net | April 2015
• Nominate money to be held for
beneficiaries under 18, like funds for
children’s or grandchildren’s education in
testamentary trusts.
It should also be noted that the rules
governing wills and estates vary from
state to state and territory and overseas
assets may need a separate will.
TAX EFFECTIVE
DISTRIBUTION
A will can also establish a testamentary
trust that becomes active on death and
which can be a tax effective tool for
distributing your estate. A discretionary
testamentary trust enables a trustee to
decide the best distribution of capital
and income to beneficiaries, taking into
account their tax situations.
POWER OF ATTORNEY
While discussing a will it is also important
to address the issue of Power of Attorney.
This can allow affairs to be conducted
in an appropriate way when you can no
longer make sound decisions.
Attorneys are not permitted to do
anything illegal while operating under a
Power of Attorney. Nor can they prepare
a will on your behalf, or transfer the Power
of Attorney to someone else unless they
have been specifically granted that right
under the original Power of Attorney.
There are three types of Power of
Attorney to consider:
1. General Power of Attorney
Provides restricted or unrestricted
authority over financial affairs, except
when they apply to health care, but the
power of attorney lapses if you lose
mental capacity.
2. Enduring Power of Attorney
Provides restricted or unrestricted
authority over financial affairs until you
die, except concerning health care. It
continues even if mental capacity is lost.
3. Enduring Medical Power of Attorney
Provides authority to make decisions
about medical and other needs if you are
unable to make those decisions. It can
also be known as Advance Care Directive
or Advance Care Plan.
WHAT ABOUT
SUPERANNUATION?
Superannuation generally does not
form part of an estate because the
superannuation trustee must distribute
funds according to the fund’s Trust
Deed. These funds, known as a death
benefit, include the withdrawal value
of the superannuation account and any
life insurance payable from the fund.
To control the distribution of the death
benefit, a Death Benefit Nomination
must be made. These are instructions
on how and to whom benefits should be
paid.
There are two forms of Death Benefit
Nominations – binding and non-binding.
For both, a death benefit may only
be paid to a dependant as defined in
superannuation legislation, or to a legal
personal representative – the executor or
administrator of an estate.
REVERSIONARY
PENSION
Those receiving a pension from their
superannuation fund may wish to have
this pension converted to a reversionary
pension in favour of a surviving spouse. As
can be seen, estate planning is a complex
area. It’s a good idea to discuss your
situation with advisers who can provide
financial, taxation and legal advice, and
who understands current legislation and
how it will affect the treatment of your
estate.

Five tips for improving staff
productivity
2. EXPAND SKILL SETS
Rotate employee tasks wherever possible.
Staff will develop a more diverse skill set,
people will feel that they are making career
progression, and it will increase employee
engagement. Assigning one staff member
as a trainer or mentor to others who will
be learning skills from them is a great way
to demonstrate confidence in someone,
while simultaneously giving you an
opportunity to evaluate their leadership
skills before a promotion.
I
mproving productivity is a common
concern for most businesses, in
particular finding ways to help
employees make the best use of their time
in the office. Making it both easier and
more rewarding for staff to do their job
well is much more time- and cost-effective
than outlaying vast sums on additional
employees or new systems.
Five tips for improving staff productivity
include:
1. MOTIVATE STAFF
While remuneration is an important factor
in job satisfaction and staff retention,
there are a lot of other contributors to job
satisfaction. Research has suggested that
employees increasingly value factors such
as a flexible workplace, additional time
off, or recognition and praise. Ensuring
that workplace complaints are heard and
seriously considered is another significant
factor in staff motivation. Additionally,
increasing individual accountability for
tasks will improve work ethic and increase
people’s sense of achievement.
3. TIME
MANAGEMENT
A common complaint from employees
is wasting time in meetings that they
don’t feel they need to be at. Encourage
staff to keep meetings to a minimum,
and to question whether they need to
attend. Similarly, returning phone calls
and responding to emails is not just timeconsuming but can also be extremely
bad for employee productivity. Constant
interruptions break people’s concentration
and can be very distracting. Encourage
staff to have specific times each day that
they return phone calls and emails to help
improve productivity and concentration.
By John Raffaele*
4. DIGITAL
ORGANISATION
It’s easy to equate a ‘paperless office’ with
an ‘organised office’, but it isn’t always
the case. If staff has difficulty locating
computer documents or programs, this
can be a significant barrier to productivity.
Additionally, it creates a sense of disorder
that can impact their perception of
management. Organising the company’s
digital work place, and encouraging
individual staff members to be similarly
organised, can go a long way in improving
productivity.
5. PRODUCTIVITY
SOFTWARE
There are a lot of new productivity software
products and apps that are designed
specifically for the workplace. Some
of these are even created for specific
industries or roles. Examples of helpful
software products or apps include digital
time trackers, to do lists, productivity
monitors and project management
software.

Autel DS708 Body Shop Scanning Tool
The increasing complexity of modern
vehicles make working on them a
difficult task for many panel beaters.
There are more complex electronics
controlling not only the engine, but
other critical areas of the car as well.
Most panel beaters are aware of their
duty to deliver customer vehicles that
are repaired to OEM standards while
meeting the highest possible levels of
safety.
Currently, most body shops don’t
normally have the internal resources to
cope with this element of the repair job.
High skill levels and equipment cost have
meant that it has become a sublet item.
Now for the first time, not only can
your mechanic use a suitable device, but
the work can also be taken care of inhouse, thus controlling both cost and time
constraints.
The
state-of-the-art
MaxiDAS
is
delicately engineered and built by Autel
Intelligent Technology, a scanning tool
R&D company based in China. Established
in 2004, Autel is now recognized by the
automotive aftermarket industry as one of
the fastest growing scan tool companies,
providing the best price-performance
ratio OEM-level diagnostic products
and first-class customer support in the
world. The MaxiDAS Diagnostic System
is ingeniously designed to recreate the
functionality of the OEM tools used
by automotive manufacturer dealers,
empowering independent garage shops
to provide complete servicing in their own
shops, including data stream, reading
and clearing of diagnostic trouble codes,
component activation and immobilizer key
coding, and more.
contains universal coverage of all
European, American and Asia Pacific
vehicles as well as locally made Holden,
Toyota, HSV and FPV variants.

GearWrench Sets The Bar High
If you’ve ever needed a pry bar on the
job, you’ll know how handy they can be.
You’ll also know that they can also be
quite cumbersome in many situations.
This is all about to change with
GearWrench’s new Indexing Pry Bars.
The GearWrench Indexing Pry Bars come
in 6 different sizes from 8” to 33” in length
and one-two extendable shaft models:
18” and 29” and 29” to 48”. These tools
will lengthen for extra leverage and retract
to fit nicely in your toolbox. The Indexing
Pry Bars have been purpose built to tackle
a range of jobs including: automotive,
repositioning equipment, aligning steel
components, engine repositioning, and a
variety of heavy-duty applications.
The ingenious design of these hand
tools give users more versatility and
accessibility than ever seen before in
such tools. The patented push-button
angle selector on the head of the pry bar
allows for a full 180 angle of head arc and
has 14 different locking positions to give
you maximum leverage and unmatched
access regardless of the job at hand.
Built with the highest quality alloy steel,
the GearWrench Indexing Pry Bars exceed
the ASME Standard* for a regular pry bar
by five times, meaning that your tool will
never bend or break under force on the
job.
The handle of the pry bar has been
ergonomically designed to fit nicely in the
hand to maximise grip force. Both 24” and
33” pry bars have been fitted with notches
in the head for extra traction for the bigger
jobs.
GearWrench didn’t invent the Pry Bar,
but there is a very good chance that
other manufacturers are going to have to
reinvent theirs in order to compete with
these indexing beauties!

PPG SATAjet 5000 – As Versatile As You
Created in co-operation with the
renowned Porsche Design Studio, the
SATAjet 5000 B is a seriously stylish gun,
but the design work that’s gone into
SATA’s all new premium spray gun is far
more than just skin deep.
The development process focused on
a spray gun with outstanding versatility
in terms of inlet pressure and application
distance, as well as adaptability to the
specific requirements of different paint
systems. Inlet pressure can be adjusted
between 0.5 bar and 2.4 bar, and
application distance between 10cm and
21cm depending on the material being
sprayed, ambient conditions and painter
preference.
HVLP and RP versions are available. The
‘Super Saver’ HVLP version achieves high
material transfer rates from its low pressure
technology, while the ‘Super Speed’
RP version uses precise high pressure
technology to maximise application speed
and minimise overspray. Both versions
benefit from transfer efficiency rates far
exceeding 65 per cent.
PRESSURE UNDER CONTROL
Outstanding ergonomics are another
advantage – via clever packaging, the
handle of the digital version (with in-
built pressure gauge) is identical in size
and shape to the standard model, so all
painters will have a perfect fit regardless
of their hand size. In addition, the air
micrometre used to adjust inlet pressure
is now considerably larger, making it
much easier to regulate, while switching
from round to flat only takes a half turn
on the spray fan control for even better
adjustment than before.
Long lifespan and very low maintenance
also reduce ‘whole-of-life’ ownership cost.
The satin-chrome pearlchrome surface
finish is corrosion resistant and easy to
clean. Superb quality seals, premium
quality components and ultra-accurate
manufacture mean the gun requires
minimal attention, but nonetheless there’s
comprehensive back up support and ready
access to replacement parts if needed.
STANDARD FEATURES:
• Quick Cup Connection at only a ¼ turn
• Self adjusting packings
• Softer trigger pull
• Optional inbuilt digital gauge reads to
two decimal places
• Colour-coded clips quickly ID different
guns (different painters, water or solvent)
• Optional RPS mixing cups – convenient
and cost effective vented
spray cups. Guarantee
consistent spray pattern/
paint atomisation and also
maintain perfect gun balance
without cumbersome adaptor
• Quick Change – larger thread at the air
nozzle for faster removal and reduced
cross threading risk
• SATA three-year warranty
• Authentication security label proving
genuine SATA quality equipment
The SATAjet 5000 B is available from your
PPG Plus and Protec Select distributor.
