I am very much looking forward to a day when we will be looking to the future of social
work and the future of its professional association in the UK. The scene will be set by high
quality speakers in Brid Featherstone, Vasilios Ioakimidis and Faye Wilson, who in diverse
ways will be conveying messages of hope and possibility. Members will then have the
opportunity to help shape BASW's 2020 vision, thereby strengthening this independent voice
of the social work profession. It's a really exciting day in prospect.

The British Association of Social Workers is a growing organisation, with membership numbers breaking records all the time.
We owe it to our members, to social work, and to all those served by social workers, to look to the future and become the social
work association that is needed over the next five years and beyond. We will do this by building on the strengths, experiences and
knowledge that BASW has developed during its rich history and by creating a vision for how this will be extended to meet the
demands of these times. This day will provide an opportunity for our members to be involved in shaping this vision. We will also be
focusing on the future of social work, and have invited speakers who in diverse ways will speak to the importance of hope and
possibility, both that social work needs and that social workers can engender in others.

About the speakers
Brid Featherstone is at the forefront of current thinking in child protection work, including on the interface between child
protection and family support. Her recent book, Re-imagining Child Protection, sets out a vision for a humane social work with
families.
Vasilios Ioakimidis is a social worker, academic and activist. A founding member of the Social Work Action Network (SWAN),
Vasilios has published widely, including on social work in Greece, and his work is rooted in the politics of hope.
Faye Wilson has worked in mental health for 40 years as a practitioner, manager and commissioner, and she was recognised
last year as having made an Outstanding Contribution to Social Work at England’s Social Worker of the Year Awards.
