Document 2 uses some or all of the following techniques:
Idioms
Clichés
Humour
Alliteration
Rhetorical question
Colloquial expressions
Identify and give examples of two of these techniques being used in the text
and explain how they help to convey meaning.
First chosen technique and example from text
Idiom: Don’t sign your life away.  Tick awarded for the example of idiom
Explanation of technique
The person wouldn’t actually be signing their live away, but using this phrase
is a good way to get across the idea that contracts can be unfair if not checked
properly. It is a familiar phrase that gets across an idea in a succinct way 
Second chosen technique and example from text
Rhetorical question: Do you really know what you are getting yourself into?

Explanation of technique
This makes the reader think about the question and makes them imagine
themselves in that context. 
Acceptable techniques identified, both supported with explanations of how
they help to convey meaning.

things about the band. For instance, the author says Let us get on with our
jobs of making awesome music. It is their opinion that the music is
awesome.
Candidate has identified two valid ways in which the author uses language to

Compare the authors’ opinions of contracts in Documents 1 and 3.
4 marks
The author of document 1 says that contracts are the most important thing,
but the author of document 3 just says they are important, not the most
important.  However, in doc 3 the author also says they are boring (because
he is in the band and is not the manager) but this is not repeated by the
author of document 1.  There is some difference in opinion about who should
be involved in negotiating the contracts. The band in doc 3 don’t want to be
involved but the author of doc 1 says they have a right to be. 
Clear identification of both authors’ views, with explicit comparison, as opposed to merely listing
individual views. A full answer will use words such as ‘however’, ‘whereas’, ‘in contrast’, ‘as opposed to’,
etc.

Total of 37 marks achieved – a very strong pass. Where asked to, the
candidate has supported answers with quotations from the source
documents, and/or provided valid explanations of responses. Careful attention
to numbers of marks available may have resulted in even higher marks being
awarded.
Particularly strong performance can be seen in the responses to question 6,
where the candidate was required to explain techniques used to convey
meaning, and question 11 where the candidate was required to explicitly
compare authors’ views.
