Things have really been pretty quiet in the Eagle cane department; I hadn’t received any cane requests all summer. On a brighter side I guess that’s a good thing, at least for our New England vets. Several weeks ago I did make a call to Jack Nitz just to make sure I didn’t miss any. He informed me that there haven’t been any requests for canes for the New England area. Then as I get ready to write this I get a request. Just a couple days ago I did get a cane request for a vet from Boston, Mass. This vet is highly decorated and a real warrior. So I called one of our NEWC members, Stan Williams who has in the past done many canes, his latest count is 26 .Way to go Stan. So Stan agreed to do it. For those interested in seeing all the canes that have been done you can go to the Eagle cane web site www.eaglecane.com there is a lot of information about the canes, what we and other clubs are doing and pictures of the recipients by state, along with a lot of other information. If you want to learn to carve an eagle head check out the tutorial on the web site. They will be very happy if you would take the time to share your talents in Painting, Wood burning, Chip carving, Habitat to Louis Dennis name a few. I’m open to any and all ideas. These can be any day of the week, day or evening classes. Please contact Louis Dennis at; 1-508-757-7303 or [email protected] On September 7th and 8th Lenny Chaisson gave a Barking carving class. The folks shown in the photo all attended the class and had a great time and all completed their projects. This was one of those projects that you can’t make a mistake unless you carve a straight or level surface. Pumpkin Carving Halloween’s coming and I’m sure many of you have seen the great pumpkin carvings out there. Now it’s time to do one yourself. But first, take a look at the best pumpkin carver I know, Ray Villifane, on his website. These are great wood carving ideas also: http://villafanestudios.com/gallery/the-pumpkins2 To start, you need some pumpkin tools. I have a 5 inch steak knife I ground down to be 1/4 inch wide to make some tight corners. 3/16” wide would be better. The length lets me use it like a saw. I also use many of my wood carving tools. The big V tool is great for final details and hair. The #11 and #9 are great for grooves. But you already know that. Stay away from the kids pumpkin tools. They’re junk. Clay tools are also good. The thick, shaped, wire tools do a nice job. In any case, your tools have to be nice and sharp. But you already know that, too. Just remember, a pumpkin carving is just like a relief carving. You only have so much thickness to work with. You can also get dark spots, like an eye’s iris, or an open mouth, my cutting through. Dark spots can also be achieved by leaving the skin on. But that depends greatly on your design. Also, if you’re going to light it from inside, the thinner the material, the lighter it looks when lit. So if you go deep with a cut, it may look great from the outside, but it will look very light when back lit. Back or inside lighting also makes holes in the face brighter, not darker, as when not lit. Lastly are some fun thoughts. You can use the pumpkin stem as a nose, but you need some nice material around it for a good face. You can also use the guts of the pumpkin as puke coming out of the mouth. You can also put in add-ons by cutting nicely fit recesses and inserting them. When you’re done, give it a spray of clear-coat - the same clear-coat you use for your wood carvings. This will extend it’s life up to a week, maybe more. Good luck. Send pictures into the newsletter. We’d love to see them! The New England Woodcarvers Spirit of Wood Show will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Middlesex Community College in Bedford, MA. Paul Ward 10 NEWC Annual Meeting and Member’s Recognition & Awards Luncheon On Sunday, June 23rd, Over 80 members of the New England Woodcarvers gathered at the Middlesex Community College Campus center to enjoy an Italian buffet and socialize after the morning carve-along session. Acting as Master of ceremonies, our President, Jim Hayden, began the festivities with a brief “State of the Club Address.” The text of his message appears elsewhere in this issue. He then introduced all the Board members in attendance and thanked them for giving of their “time, talents and treasures to make sure things get done”. Jerry Grimes, Nominating Committee Chair, representing committee members Yvette Holladay and Rick Boyer, next introduced the slate of officers for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. The following members were unanimously elected to their positions: President (2 year term) – Jim Hayden President Elect (2 year term) – Keith Oldfield Vice President (1 year term) – M. Paul Ward Secretary (1 Year term) – Keith Oldfield Membership Secretary (1 year term) – Mary Chouinard Treasurer (1 year term) – Joe Marshall The Executive Board members then approved the following appointments, made by the President, to one year terms: Directors at Large: Ed Brackett, Paul Durant, Gerd Orgeldinger Newsletter Editor in Chief: Yvette Holladay Merchandise Coordinator: Keith Oldfield Special Advisor to the Board: Jerry Grimes Before honoring all 25, 30, 35 and 40 Year members, Yvette Holladay spoke about the passing of former Carver of the Year Al Grey, who would have been honored as a 40 year member. She also asked for a moment of silence for all members who we lost this year. Awards were next on the afternoon’s program. President’s Award. The award was given to Kathy Webster. According to Jim, “She was invaluable to me in running the 2012 Spirit of Wood Show. She not only did a full 2 day workshop for us prior to the show, but did a seminar at the show, helped with judging and helped coach me in my first attempt at judging. She was also our featured carver and donated a carving for our bucket raffle.” Kathy is also a leader in the Maine Woodcarvers Association. She was a finalist for Member of the Year. Leadership Award. Two were given out this year. The first was given to Keith Oldfield, who, according to Hayden, “has really stepped forward, and continues to step forward to serve.” In the last year, Keith has stepped up to serve as Secretary, has completely revamped and improved our NEWC Merchandise as Coordinator, and now has been elected as the first ever PresidentElect. He will become President in 2015, when Jim’s term is over. The second went to Jerry Grimes who served for the last 3 years as Treasurer. He also has served as liaison to the college and food vendors, organized the Roger Melanson Memorial Scholarship, and now will be serving as Special Advisor to the Board for the next year. Chet Card-Gene Matheson Volunteer Excellence Award. Chet and Gene were two of the founder of NEWC almost 50 years ago. They believed in a strong membership dependent on volunteers to make the club succeed. This year, the award was given to one of those volunteers 11 who are always working at our meetings and shows. Bob Schmeichel IS our photographer. He documents everything we do and makes the photos available on-line and on CDs. He was also a finalist for Member of the Year. Member of the Year The big award every year is nominated and voted on by the members. This year, there were three deserving members nominated. In the end, Lenny Hill from Medway, MA has been a member since 1997. He has been an instructor at NEWC meetings and shows for many years. You will see him surrounded by several members at most meetings, as he imparts his great knowledge of techniques. Many of the newer members have been invited to sit in on his carve-along projects. Len was also nominated last year, but withdrew to make the vote for Roger Melanson unanimous. This year, Martin Truitt, Floyd’s son, carved the plaque, and Len was also presented with the Carver’s Statue Trophy, which is passed to each winner. John Marino, Lenny Hill (Membor of the Year) and Jim Hayden (NEWC President) State of the Club, 2013 As Part of the Annual Meeting, it usually falls upon the President to update the membership on the status of the club. With that in mind, I am happy to report that the State of Your Club is STRONG! While I outlined a few financial concerns in the last issue of the newsletter, and discussed the steps that the Board has taken to combat them, including raising dues for the first time in many years, I am not worried. I know that with as many talented members as we have, we can work together to insure that YOUR club will continue to function well. In the surveys we did last year, it became obvious that there were a few main things you cared about: 1) Good Quality Membership Meetings with quality carve-alongs and interesting speakers. I believe with the diverse speakers we have had this last year, we are strong in this area. Thank you Paul Ward for your efforts here. 2) A Quality Newsletter. I think our newsletter, which averages over 20 pages per issue, speaks for itself. I thank Yvette Holladay and all the contributors for this. We are always looking for more contributions. 3) A GREAT Spirit of Wood Show. We were not sure if we could pull off this last one after losing Roger. He ran this show and it was not easy to figure out everything that needed to be done, but with the help of lots of members and non-members stepping up, we pulled it off. We had 93 carvers competing, with a total of 213 carvings entered. I am most proud that we had 9 Youth Carvers participating. Thank you all who helped. We look forward to an even better show this year. We have already started planning. 4) A Library that members can utilize. Thanks to Nancy Swiniarski, we are well on our way to getting this one on line as well. She is bringing some of the books to every meeting, along with sign out cards. None of this can be done without the help of volunteers. I want to thank all of them, the Board, our CarveAlong leaders, and all of you for making this a strong club. We are now looking forward to our 50th Anniversary in 2015. This will be a chance for all of us to step up and make this event a huge success. I thank you all for your support. 12 Introducing…… The 2013 Spirit of Wood Show Auction!!!! How it works: At the Show, there will be a Silent Auction on several items. Along with your usual carving projects, I hope you made yourself a few rubber ducks to enter into the challenge contest. You must give your carving a name which will be somewhat descriptive. For example, if your carving is a Santa Clause name it “Santa Duck” or “Duckie St. Nick”, something along those lines. For the show, each carving will have a placard with a name and number so the public can fill out ballots with this information. I would like to ask that everyone who is going to have an entry for the contest to email me so that I can send you an entry form plus by the responses, I can determine how large to make the display stand for the show. The registration guidelines for the challenge project will be the same as all the SOW show entries with the exception being there are no entry fees involved. I am looking forward to seeing all the creative carvings out there and wish you all the best of luck for the show. I will always welcome any questions, comments or suggestions you may have. Under the direction of Kris Gillis we carved Spirit of the Wood and Castles. She also instructed us on Christmas items, such as small sleds, showing snowmen, angels, poinsettias, etc. Each carver is making two items. With the pine wood left over from the sleds, Kris will be instructing us on another fun item. Our next project will be signs using sugar pine wood. Please let us know where we can purchase sugar pine wood. Each carver will design his or her own sign. In Peabody, we have 17-20 carvers each week out of 31 members. We have a mixture of men and women. Our group is very talented and very willing to help each other. We even have one person who carved nothing but turtles. We had one person who comes in to talk. this is good because it gets people out of their homes. They meet every Wednesday from 9:00 - 11:30 am. DANVERS Danvers is a smaller group. They carve their own projects. It is a friendly group of men. A good place for a beginner to start. They meet every Friday from 9:00 to 11:30 am. The Danvers Woodcarvers carved a wooden quilt, which now hangs in the Danvers Senior Center’s cafeteria. SAUGUS The Saugus woodcarvers meet under the direction of Robert Needham. He likes to carve canes, he does relief carving, caricatures and is also a ship model builder. The carvers meet on Monday afternoon from 1:00 - 3:30 pm. The lighting is excellent and the best thing you do not have to clean up after carving. For more information, contact Frank Reichardt who carves at all three places.
