THE BEAUTY OF BIMINI, BAHAMAS
A STORIED HISTORY:
Just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, the islands of Bimini
are known as The Gateway to The Bahamas. Bimini
consists of two main islands—North Bimini and South
Bimini, as well as numerous cays, all rich in history and
culture. These mystical islands have been gaining the
attention of world travelers for centuries. According to
tradition, the natives of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Cuba
told the early Spanish explorers that in Bimini or Beniny
as it was known, there was a river, spring or fountain
where miraculously curative waters could cause the aged
who bathed in them to regain their youth. Juan Ponce
de Leon who had been with Columbus on his second
voyage in 1493 is supposed to have learned of the fable
from the Indians and unsuccessfully tried to find the
mythical Fountain of Youth in 1513.
With its close proximity to the United States, it’s
no surprise that Bimini was a favorite haven and
supply point for the rum-running trade during
the prohibition era in American history. In the
1930’s, Bimini was Ernest Hemingway’s favorite
escape, and served as his source of inspiration
for his books Islands in the stream and The Old
Man At Sea
Other notables who found solace here include
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was in Bimini
when he wrote parts of his acceptance speech
for his Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1968 also
while in Bimini, he wrote his sanitation workers
speech and his own eulogy, just days before his
assassination. Other notables affiliated with the
island include Marjorie Rawlings, Adam Clayton
Powell, the Duke of Windsor, Anthony Hopkins,
Sammy Davis Jr, Johnny Cash and others.
Today, visitors from around the world continue
to enjoy Bimini’s complex and renowned past,
including the mysterious Bimini Road discovered
in 1968 off the coast of North Bimini. Many
believe that this stretch of neatly arranged
300-foot long limestone blocks, estimated to be
between 5,000 and 10,000 years old, once served
as a road to the Lost City of Atlantis.
