Creating Dramatic Skies with Watercolour By Marlene Palagyi Summer Sky COLOUR PALETTE • Raw Sienna • Alizarin Crimson • Ultramarine Blue METHOD 1. Wet paper and layer washes of raw sienna, alizarin crimson, and lastly ultramarine. 2. Leaving a halo of yellow in the centre above horizon. 3. Add in your own landscape. Tutorial by Marlene Palagyi CLOUDY SKY COLOUR PALETTE • Raw Sienna • Alizarin crimson • Ultramarine Blue • Burnt Sienna ( a touch) METHOD 1. Wet paper and layer wash as on Summer Sky 2. Tissue out cloud shapes (smaller at horizon) 3. Touch in mixes from colour palette list at base of clouds. 4. Dampen out hard edges using wet brush. RAINY, WINDY SKY COLOUR PALETTE • • • • Raw Sienna Alizarin crimson Ultramarine Blue Burnt Sienna METHOD 1. Wet paper and wash in raw sienna lay board flat 2. Add in mixes of dark cloud colours across middle section 3. Tilt board in direction of wind allowing paint to run into sienna- mist sprayer can be used to help it run if needed. 4. Lay board flat to dry Tutorial by Marlene Palagyi Dramatic Night Sky METHOD COLOUR PALETTE • • • • • Raw Sienna Alizarin crimson Ultramarine Blue Burnt Sienna Prussian Blue 1. Wet paper and lay a wash of Raw Sienna intensifying at horizon 2. While still wet wash in intense – Alizarin, Ultra Marine, Prussian Blue and Burnt Siena, leaving a halo of yellow in the middle of horizon. 3. Dry painting, then wet and dab out moon shape. Add some cad yellow. 4. Using an intense mix of Prussian blue and Burnt Sienna to add dark dramatic clouds. By Marlene Palagyi
