Welcome Reception at the Palace of Pedralbes

The Royal Palace of Pedralbes is a building located in the middle of a large area of landscaped
gardens in the district of “Les Corts” in Barcelona.
The Royal Palace of Pedralbes has been declared a National monument of Historical and Artistic
Interest. It was begun in 1919 and finished in 1926, when the Palace was formally offered to
King Alfonso XIII. Its moment of greatest magnificence came during the Universal Exhibition in
Barcelona in 1929. Today the Palace houses the Ceramics Museum and the Museum of Decorative
Arts and is the permanent headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean. The Palace has its
origins in ancient farmhouse of Can Feliu, the seventeenth century. The property was acquired in
1862 by Count Eusebi Güell. Together they formed the Finca Güell, covering large areas of 30,000
m2.
The Can Feliu building was remodeled by the architect Joan Martorell i Montells, who built a
Caribbean-style small palace, together with a Gothic-style chapel and surrounded by magnificent
gardens.
Later the building remodeling was given
to Antoni Gaudí, together with the
construction of a surrounding perimeter
wall and the side entry pavilions. Gaudí
also partially designed the gardens
surrounding the palace, placing two
fountains and a pergola and planted many
Mediterranean plants.
The gardens surrounding the Palace were
designed by the architect Nicolau Maria
Rubio, respecting the original trees and
shrubs. Special interest has the fountain
formed in wrought iron in the shape of a
dragon, designed by the internationally
famous Antoni Gaudí between 1870 and
1880.
