Balloon Fest Experiment Design

Balloon Fest Experiment Design Team Entomo Members: Marco Rossetti, Marissa Farelas, Alexis Cuevas Uriostique Purpose of this experiment: We want to test how the impact from the drop will affect our cockroaches when it hits the ground. We would like to see if the cockroach that hit the ground has the same ability to stabilize itself like a normal cockroach after such a big impact. *Research: Because the cockroach is 800 feet high it will have a loss of oxygen. With the addition of the speed and the impact of the project this cockroach will be unfluctuating than Test Subject #0 (Controlled Variable). Hypothesis A: The impact of the wooden case will hit the ground with nothing bracing it. This will cause a greater impact and it will affect the stabilization of the cockroach more. The speed and impact will make the cockroach so discombobulated that it will not be able to properly function through the maze as Test Subject #0. Hypothesis B: The impact of the wooden case will hit the ground with a small pool of water that will slightly brace the impact of the cockroach to have it not be as greatly affected so that it will be able to make its way through the maze but not as fast as Test Subject #0. Proposed Experimental Method: We plan to drop a cockroach from 800 feet and see how the impact affects the cockroach on different surfaces. Using a wooden box and an electro magnet we will drop the cockroach and once it has hit the ground we will put the cockroach through a maze to see if it is not able to stabilize itself like Test Subject #0. We will record the cockroaches going through the maze so that we will be able to document how fast the cockroaches make it through the maze. It is important to quickly get the cockroach out of the wooden box and into the maze as fast as possible so that the effects of the cockroach don’t go away before we can record our data. Test Subject #2
We are planning on doing 2 tests on three separate
test subjects. Multiple tests will allow us to have more reliable data to conclude our experiment. Cockroach Type: Madagascar Hissing Quantity: 4 Size (length, weight): 23 in. 0.8 oz
