On October 26, 1993, the National Football League awarded Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson the
29th NFL franchise and professional football was brought to the Carolinas. Richardson became
just the second former player to own an NFL team.
One of only three privately funded stadiums in the NFL, the Carolina Panthers' Bank of America
Stadium opened in 1996. The open-air, natural-grass stadium includes training facilities, practice
fields and the administrative offices.
The stadium facade features many unique elements, clad in building materials that accent the
team colors of black, silver and Panthers blue. Six Panther statues, named Indomitable Spirit,
guard the three 80-foot arched entrances, and the names of thousands of Permanent Seat
License owners grace the bases.
The interior has been designed to provide a generous ratio of concession and restroom facilities
among wide and tall concourses. A renovation project during the 2014 offseason incorporated
state-of-the-art technology into the fan experience, all while maintaining the stadium's classic
American design and stadium-in-the-park feel. Additions included four escalator bays that whisk
fans to the upper levels, high-definition video boards above each end zone, vibrant ribbon boards
encircling the entire bowl at the club and upper levels, and a high-efficiency, high-octave
distributed sound system throughout the bowl.
