General Information
Chesterfield Competitive Festival of Music and Drama aims to provide a
competitive platform for amateur musicians, singers and actors to perform in
public and to receive a professional adjudication on their performance. The Festival
aims to give the general public an opportunity to enjoy the talents of competitors
and to appreciate performances of music and song in a festival environment.
Classes for school choirs and school instrumental ensembles will be held on Friday
24th April during school time. Other classes may be on either day of the Festival,
but are most likely to be on Saturday 25th April. Details of exact times will be sent
out with competitor’s entry tickets approximately three weeks before the Festival.
On the evening of Saturday 25th April there will be an All-Winners Concert.
Entrants who win their class with a mark of 87 or more (86 or more for under 12s)
will be invited to take part in the All-Winners Concert, where they will compete for
the Festival trophies: Vocalist of the Festival, Instrumentalist of the Festival, and
Young Performer of the Festival. The trophies for Choir of the Festival and Most
Promising Young Singer will also be awarded at the concert.
Our Adjudicators for the music classes will be: Christina Thomson and Dr Vivien
Pike. They are members of the British International Federation of Festivals and
work within the guidelines and regulations of that Federation. The Speech and
Drama classes will be adjudicated by John Goodrum, a local professional actor
and theatre director, and also the President of our Festival.
Our Official Accompanists will be:
Andrew Marples, Jane Palmer, Katy Strudwick and Chris Flint.
Further information can be found on our website,
www.chesterfieldmusicfestival.org.uk
or on our facebook page Chesterfield Music Festival.
May we remind you that:
Entrants whose piece requires piano accompaniment must use the Official
Accompanists. (see rule 6). We do not allow entrants to bring their own
accompanists (except choirs or instrumental ensembles). Our accompanists have
extensive experience of accompanying at all levels of performance. They are
excellent sight-readers, however in order to support the entrants properly they
must have the music well in advance. Please ensure that any music is sent in with
the entry form as specified in Rule 7 of the rules and regulations.
4
The use of recorded backing tracks is allowed in certain classes only - these are
clearly identified in the syllabus. Backing tracks must be on a cd and be legitimate
recordings. A sound system to play the cd will be provided in these classes.
In addition, our adjudicators need to be able to see a copy of the music on the day
(see rule 7). Please remember to bring a copy of every piece being performed and
hand it in to the steward at the start of the class.
Entrants in the Drama classes must send in a copy of their chosen piece with the
entry form and also provide one on the day for the adjudicator.
The smooth running of the Festival depends to a large extent on precise
timekeeping of the various classes. Please assist us by considering the specified
time limits carefully when choosing own choice pieces, and by stating an accurate
duration of each piece on the entry form. Performances which exceed the time
limit specified in the syllabus will not be fully adjudicated. (see rule 9).
If you wish to perform any ‘Songs from the Shows’ please note the following: All
performances using music from the shows in current production are subject to
copyright law. Songs from shows in current production may be sung as a concert
item, i.e, with no costume or movement without need for copyright permission.
Where movement or costume are included in a performance copyright permission
is required and the Festival committee accepts these entries on the basis that the
appropriate copyright permission has been sought. Performers or teachers with
queries on how to obtain copyright permission for performance items should
contact Festivals House on 01906 302 1302 before making their entries. (Calls cost
maximum of 50p per minute).

GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
The use of sound recordings, video or photography (including mobile phones) is
strictly prohibited during a performance or adjudication and at all other times while
the festival is in progress.
1.
All entries must be made on the official form found in the centre of the syllabus. Photocopies may be submitted for multiple entries. Cheques should be made payable to Chesterfield Music Festival and accompanied by a stamped addressed
envelope for the return of entry tickets. Closing date for entries will be strictly adhered to.
2. The committee reserve the right to refuse an entry and to cancel or amalgamate any class for which there are insufficient entries. In the event of cancellation the
entry fee will be returned.
3. The Festival classes are open to amateur performers only. An amateur is defined as a person who does not derive the main part of his/her income from that section of the art which he or she proposes to enter. This rule does not apply to conductors.
4. Festival entrants must comply with the age limit where applicable. The entrant’s age on the day of the Festival is deemed to be the age for the purpose of the entry. Proof must be produced if required.
5. The adjudicator’s decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
6. The Official Accompanists must be used for all solo or duet classes where piano accompaniment is required. The Accompanist is also available for choirs and instrumental ensembles if required. Backing track accompaniment (on CD)
can only be used in classes where it is specified in the class name in the syllabus.
Entrants must provide their own legitimate backing track. The Festival will
provide suitable sound system to play the CD.
7. Details of own choice pieces must be given on the entry form. A copy of the music must be brought on the day and given to the adjudicator’s steward before the class commences. If the piece includes piano accompaniment then a copy of the music must be sent in with the Entry Form for the Official Accompanist. All entrants for Drama classes must also send in a copy of their own choice piece with the Entry Form. All copies must be clearly marked with the entrant’s name and class number. Failure to provide suitable copies at the appropriate time will result in disqualification from that class.
8. A set piece from another class may not be offered as own choice.
9. Time limits will be strictly adhered to. Adjudication will cease after the limit and the adjudicator may ask for the performance to be stopped.
10. An own choice test piece may not be performed in more than one class.
17
11. The Music Publishers’ Association has issued a revised code of practice on copying copyright works, and the following concession is made for copying own choice
pieces from volumes only for the adjudicator. Other items must not be photocopied without the permission of the copyright holder in each case. When own choice is selected from a publication containing several different works and which is not published separately, one copy may be made for the use of an
adjudicator at a festival provided that the competitor has already purchased his/
her own original copy and that the copy is retained and destroyed by the Festival
chair immediately after the Festival.
The original copy of the volume from which a piece is to be played, must be available in the room at the time of performance and adjudication.
This permission specifically does not apply to set works. Single copies of items may not be photocopied without the prior permission of the copyright holder.
The permission does not apply to making copies for the accompanist, who should always be given a printed copy from which to work.
Photocopies for the adjudicator must be totally legible or they may be refused.
Please note there are no facilities for producing photocopies at the Festival.
12. Adjudicator’s report – one copy only will be available after each class.
13. The order of competing will be shown as in the programme. This order can only be varied by arrangement with the adjudicator’s steward.
14. Certificates and awards may be withheld if in the opinion of the adjudicator competitors have not reached a sufficiently high standard.
15. Successful entrants may be invited to perform again at the all-winners concert on the Saturday evening session of the Festival. At this concert trophies will be
awarded for overall excellence.
16. Entrants must not be replaced by a substitute, nor may they change their own choice pieces. The Festival is under legal obligation to supply to the
Performing Rights Society details of all items performed in the Festival and the
co-operation of teachers and entrants in sending information at the correct time would be very much appreciated.
17.
Winners of trophies must sign a receipt before taking the trophy away.
In accepting a trophy the winner undertakes to keep it safely and return it adequately packed and in a clean condition to the Chair of the Festival Committee, Mrs Julia Tew, 11 Cheetham Avenue, Unstone, Derbyshire, S18 4DL
by the 1st March 2016.
18. The decision of the Festival Committee on any material raised or not covered by these regulations shall be final.

CHESTERFIELD MUSIC FESTIVAL CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
Statement
The safety of children and vulnerable adults is paramount and all, without exception,
have the right to protection from abuse. All suspicions and allegations of abuse will
be taken seriously and responded to quickly and appropriately and all Committee
members, Consultants, Teachers and volunteers have a responsibility to report
concerns.
Purpose and Function of Festival
The aim of the Chesterfield Competitive Festival of Music and Drama is to provide a
competitive platform for amateur musicians and singers to perform and to receive
a professional adjudication on their performance. The Festival aims to give the
general public an opportunity to enjoy the talents of competitors and to appreciate
performances of music and song in a festival environment.
Festival Environment
The Festival is organized by the Festival Committee with assistance from professional
teachers, music consultants for the programme, volunteers, accompanists and
adjudicators, to provide a safe environment for all competing children as far as is
reasonably practical.
Application of policy
This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and vulnerable adults of any
age, who are identified to the organisers prior to their arrival at the Festival. This should
be done by contacting the address at the foot of this policy. In recognising the needs
of children from ethnic groups and children with disabilities, the Festival actively seeks
to meet those needs notified by parents, guardians, carers and teachers. All Festival
personnel are informed as to whom they should direct children and vulnerable adults
with any concerns.
Festival Personnel
All Festival personnel are Committee members, Accompanists, Music Consultants or
volunteers and can be identified by the badges provided by the Festival. Badges will be
worn throughout the Festival and anyone wearing a badge can be approached in case
of a problem and will report the matter to someone who will be able to help.
During the Festival, the Chairman, who is in overall charge, or the Vice Chair, can be
contacted via door entry table staff.
The roles of all Festival personnel are considered during recruitment and the
Committee holds contact details for all personnel. Where they are working with
children and vulnerable adults on a one to one basis, a reference or criminal records
declaration will be provided. All Festival helpers are aware of and support this Child
Protection Policy.
19
Preparation for Attendance at Festival
lf parents, guardians or carers do not personally attend with their children, we draw
attention to all aspects of this Child Protection Policy and require them to be satisfied
that their children will be accompanied to the Festival and adequately supervised by a
responsible adult acting on their behalf.
Performance and Changing Areas
This Festival does not offer changing facilities or designated practice areas. Toilet areas
are considered to be public areas and are not subject to supervision.
Photographs, Video Recording and Press Photography
Video recording, sound recording and photography of any kind are prohibited at all
times during the Festival. The Festival Chair will invite photographers from the local
press in order to publicise and promote the Festival. It is hoped that anyone invited to
