Some other things to know about
First Aid. This will be the usual “Standard First Aid with
a Wilderness Flavour”. It will be a full week Mon-Fri
excluding Wed. Based on requests from last year
includes more scenarios and skill development
opportunities.
B-Con. This is a special first Aid course for anyone
taking the week long course on site. It will be held on
Saturday morning for 3-4 hours.
Archery course will be held on Wednesday. This will be
free to participants in any weeklong course. Others
may join for a small fee.
Magic Campfire will be a full week course and focuses
on making campfires, ceremonies, magic and more.
There will be a Morning Fitness Challenge every
morning before breakfast. Insanity workouts on Mon
Wed Fri; alternate Tue Thu Sat will be a run.
On Wed evening we will hold our usual Pot Luck Dinner
and this year a Skill Swap! Like an informal Mini
Scouting University where the currency is information.

experience working with youth and the role you wish to
fill. MedVents are encouraged to apply. All OOS will
attend a training weekend prior to this event. MedVents
will receive NAEMT-PHTLS Trauma First Responder
training/certification.

Some employers will provide time off and/or payment
of fees for this professional training. In other venues,
this training can cost over $1000. Check with your
Course Director for a letter to provide to your employer.
Most Group Committees will pay for this training as it is
considered a normal budget item for Group operations.
By bringing your family, your training can double as
vacation time since you'll have most evenings free and
all of Wednesday to enjoy Sylvan Lake or the
surrounding area.

Wood Badge II Training
Wood Badge Training began in 1919 at Gilwell Park,
England as a training course for Scoutmasters. Twenty
leaders attended the twelve-day program led by Sir
Robert Baden Powell. Upon their successful
completion of the training, they were presented with a
simple wooden beads and a leather thong. The course
name from then on was known as “Wood Badge”.
The course has grown along with the Scouting
Movement to meet the training needs of its leaders.
Today’s course, Wood Badge II focuses on the
teaching of contemporary concepts in improving
communication, and working with a diversified
volunteer team. It is designed to provide a foundation
of leadership skills that will apply not only to your
position in Scouting, but to your personal life and career
as well.
The primary purpose of Wood Badge Training is to
strengthen Scouting in our local Groups, Areas and
Council. The Wood Badge Course brings together
leaders from all areas of Scouting: Beaver Scouts, Cub
Scouts, Scouts, Venturer Scouts, Rover Scouts, Group
Committee, Group Commissioner and Trainers. The
course content and leadership principles apply to
Scouts in all leadership positions and will provide a
common foundation of leadership skills to be used
throughout all Scouts Canada program areas.
In Canada the Wood Badge program consists of two
parts, an introduction targeted at new leaders and
advanced training for leaders ready for more. Only
phase 2 will be presented over the week at Camp
Woods. During this outdoor experience you will develop
a personal plan for putting the leadership skills you are
learning into practice.
This plan is called your “Ticket”. Ticket commitments
include specific goals and objectives involved in your
own Scouting program, areas of personal growth, and
expanding the diversity of Scouting. You will hopefully
find and become friends with a coach/mentor who will
provide assistance and guidance as you “work your
ticket”.
All Scouters must have Wood Badge I in the same
section that they wish to register for at camp.
Upon successful completion of stage one you will have been awarded
a leather turkshead woggle, on completing stage two you will receive
a distinctive Wood Badge neckerchief referred to as a Gilwell necker,
and Wood Badge Beads – two wooden beads worn on a leather thong
around the neck.
Scouter +
Develop your skills and learn how to effectively teach,
coach and mentor your fellow Scouters. Through
presentations, projects, and discussions with
experienced trainers, you will strengthen skills you
already possess and cultivate new ones. Towards the
end of the week you will have the opportunity to lead
training sessions for the Wood Badge participants who
are also participating in the Family Training Event.
Theory + Hands-on Practice + Immediate Support.
There is simply no better way to get into training. As an
added bonus you can meet previous course graduates
who have gone on to train courses that are being
offered simultaneously.

Boating Skills
Learn how to safely handle both canoes and sailboats
in this one week course that will put you on the water
gathering practical experience every day.
HEROES
HEROES is a Scouter in Training (SIT) course inspired by
the SIT courses run at Blue Springs Scout Reserve during
the mid-1990s and enhanced by a youth focused training
team. The course challenges participants to:

Acquire a wide variety of skills that will allow them to
make a meaningful difference in both their own lives
and the lives of others in a short time;
Believe in themselves, their ability to change the
world, and see how Scouting can enable them to do
both.
The course also provides participants with an opportunity
to do hard things that have a high cool factor. Previous
participants have made their own knives from raw steel,
climbed mountains and found a sunken treasure.
HEROES is an entirely self-contained event. There is no
going back to your family each night or for meals. Once
you’re in, you’re in.
Family Program
This is an opportunity to give your child the ultimate
Scouting experience. Whether they're Beaver, Cub or
Scout-aged youth their day will be filled with games, crafts,
rambles, water, snacks, and adventures. Have a junior
Venturer coming along who isn't quite old enough for the
training program? They'll have the opportunity to act as
activity leaders, assisting with the delivery of the program
and honing their leadership skills. Evening program
includes Family Campfires, GPS, Treasure Hunt plus
much more.

before July 17, 2015
The fees above include camping fees and all course
related programming and materials costs for the week.
Participants are responsible for bringing their own
accommodations (tent, trailer, RV, etc.). In very special
cases it may be possible to offer participants indoor
accommodation in a bunkhouse. Please contact the
administrator for information.
Participants are responsible for their own food. Time
will generally be given for lunch but note that some
training programs may include a requirement to attend
one or more lunches as a course. We are exploring the
possibility of participants joining the staff food plan and
will notify all registrants in the welcome package if this
becomes available.
What is the
“Family Training Event”
It has become a tradition in Alberta Scouting to provide
an on-site day program for children and families of
Wood Badge II training participants to enable them to
both enjoy training and spend time with their families.
With so many people on site providing programming all
at once it made sense to start offering additional
programs simultaneously.
With at least five different programs happening
simultaneously it no longer made sense to refer only to
the WB-II program. We are calling it the “Family
Training Event” to acknowledge the whole family
approach that is being celebrated by this multi-event
approach.
