WOOD BADGE?
R U Tougher Than A Scoutmaster??
Submitted by Ron Imel, Troop 285 ASM
Also appeared in Dallas Morning News Plano Neighbors Go
That is what the Scouts from Troop 285 in Plano sought to prove they were!! During a
campout over the weekend of Feb 20-22, under sunny skies they ran through a course that
contained obstacles & various activities that included Scout skills designed to challenge
them both physically & mentally. A course they didn’t really
know specifically what was involved until the morning before
they ran…talk about Being Prepared!!
Their overall goal was to see if their Patrol time average could beat their Scoutmaster
& the ASMs. In addition to an overall time, there were risk/rewards that would add
or subtract from their course time depending on how well they succeeded.
The course was setup with alternating obstacles & activities such as, agility weave
(like the dog agility), tomahawk/knife throw, belly crawl, fire starting to burn a string
(they picked their method with a “wheel of fortune”, hand over hand Tarzan ladder,
compass course to find their rifle & shotgun ammo tokens for later, Atlatl throwing,
high stepping (like stepping in tires), 3 knot tying, over/under
(go over one beam, under the next), shotgun shooting (5
stationary clay targets at various distances), balance beam while
balancing a ball in a plunger, rifle shooting off cross-sticks (5 clay targets) and lifting &
securing a log on a rope with specific knots.
We had two lanes setup so there also was a little head to head
competition while they ran the course, total length was about ½ mile,
but I guarantee it felt like twice as far (at least for the adults!!) and
when everybody finished, there were big smiles all around and talk
about how well they did & some wanting (and did) to run it again!!
This turned out more fun & challenging than we ever imagined…some were already talking
about doing it again next year & discussing different activities to include!! And I have no
doubt, the Scouts of T285 will be better prepared & ready to burn through whatever course
we put together next time!!

organization which works closely with the Dallas Woods and Waters Club
(DWWC) to establish mutually compatible charitable goals. Their mission is
to ensure the future of the great outdoors through conservation, preserving
wildlife, restoring habitats, and educating youth in the outdoor disciplines
and the preservation of our natural resources. They also strive to develop
charitable contributions and gifts in order to further our mission and to assist
other charitable organizations with similar goals and objectives.
WWF offers $100 donations for assistance on Eagle Scout Service Projects.
They require a written request describing the project and the board will select
one Scout each month to receive $100 for use on their project. WWF only
asks that the Scout submit an article and pictures of the completed project for
their use in upcoming issues of the DWWC monthly newsletter. Request should be sent to:

Helpful
The third point of the Scout Law is “Helpful.” A Scout cares
about other people. He willingly volunteers to help others
without expecting payment or reward. Scouting reinforces
this basic value.
Activities for Your Scouts
There are a number of upcoming activities and it’s time
to get signed up. These include: Oak Leaf (Leadership
Training) for Boy Scouts. Venturing Rendezvous Weekend
for Venturing Age Youth. Twilight Camp for Cub Scouts.
Parent -N- Pal Weekend for Cub Scouts. Webelos Resident
Camp for Webelos Scouts. All of these activities require
advanced sign up. Don’t make the job of the organizers
more difficult than it needs to be. Sign up promptly.
High Adventure Opportunities This Summer!
A high adventure activity is often the high point of a
Scouting career. It can be difficult to make this happen.
There are a number of units in Northern Trail who have
some openings coming up this summer. They are anxious to
fill these slots. These include Philmont and Sea Base. Check
out the possibilities.

Thank You to Phillip Young for leading this effort and all

Bike Rodeo - April 25
The Rotary Club of Dallas’ Bike Rodeo at Scottish Rite Hospital is on April 25. This is both a great activity for units (or
just families) to attend as well as a significant opportunity to
demonstrate Scouting spirit and community service. If you
have any questions, contact Jeff Bosque (jeff@dallasrotary.

Twilight Camp & Summer Camp
Now’s the time to start making your summer camp plans.
For all Cub Scouts, Tejas Caddo will be hosting our annual
Twilight Camp from June 8 - June 12. More details will be
coming out over the next few weeks. This is a great chance
to finish the year’s program and kick start the summer season for all your Cub Scouts.
For all Scouts, summer is a great time to take the Scouting
experience to the next level. From resident camps to high
adventure, there is something for everyone. Circle Ten has
week-long programs that are fun-filled and closed to home.
If you have questions about summer camp, just let us know.
For more information about these and other upcoming
activities, check out the Tejas Caddo website - http://tejascaddo.circleten.org/ Webmaster John Thompson helps keep

April-June
April is Camporee month. This year we will be at Trevor
Reese Jones on April 17-19. The camp will also be shared
with Five Trails District. We have had some initial
conversations with their leadership as to how we will share
the camp. More will be shared in the coming Roundtables.
May is another new program—“Ready to Camp this
Summer” is a new community program. If you are
interested, please talk with Gary Debbie, Kim, or Lynn.
June is time for Twilight Camp and Summer Camp
planning.
District Business
Membership In April, we will be making a pitch at the
different schools in our District to get one more round of
recruitment going before the end of the school year. If you
can help make a presentation, please contact Adrian.
Training will be looking to establish a face to face Cub
leader training; BALOO. As a District Committee, we need
to schedule a Committee training date. Currently targeting
early June as a possibility as is will require a few hours face
to face.
Camp Card Sales are nearing closure. There is still some
time left to make some needed funds for your units. This
money can help recharter in December; it can help with
summer camp fees this year and much more. If you need
more cards, please contact Gary Pittman.
Camping is starting to get ready for summer. Summer
Camp Leaders handbooks for Circle Ten are now available.
Twilight Camp will be in June. Are you promoting your
units to continue their program through the summer?
The Circle Ten Xperience will be in November. The
council is still waiting to have early registration in
order to properly prepare for the attendance. Yes, I
know it is in November. Try to plan for a couple of
thousand attendees only to have a high number of
no-shows or the opposite and get swamped. No one is
happy. So get the word out and get our units registered.
Marketing
We need to have the units update their unit websites
and send their information to our Webmaster and Unit
Commissioner.
Do you have information that needs or should be
posted to the District Website. Please let us know so
we can be sure to update and keep our information
current.
Roundtable and Summer Thoughts
We will be distributing a survey about Roundtable
at both Roundtable in April and May plus via email.
We want to strengthen our attendance so candid
commentary is desired.
July is normally a month where we do not meet. We
are thinking it might be a time to have an unofficial
gathering point for leaders to come ask for help
or learning. Look for more to come from our Unit
Commissioner and District Chair about this offering.

Last month’s roundtable with split sessions for Boy Scouts
and Cub Scouts was FANTASTIC! Thanks to Lynn for
stepping up and taking that on for the month of March.
Make sure you plan to attend in April when we talk about
the importance of planning a year round program and
preparing a budget! Following that, Cub Scout leaders will
have part 2 of the Introduction to the New Program and
Boy Scout leaders can learn about the new Sustainability
Merit Badge. Make sure you don’t miss it!
Spring is Here!
Spring has arrived and the sun is finally here to stay! Time
for spring camp outs and summer activity plans! If your
unit is not signed up for Summer Camp or Twilight Camp
now is the time! Did you know that attending summer
camp is one of the biggest factors in retention? Boys who
attend long term camp stay in Scouting. Make sure each
of your boys has the opportunity to camp. Please contact
the District Commissioner, Scott Martin, or the District
Executive, Laura Eggleston, if you have questions or
concerns.
Please don’t forget to snap some photos of your spring
events and send them in so we can include them!
Help! Help! We need HELP!!!
Trinity Woods is still in DESPERATE need of
Commissioners! We need folks to serve as Unit
Commissioners, to serve on the Roundtable Team, and to
serve as New Unit Commissioners. If you know someone
who has a heart for service and a love for Scouting, please
let us know. We can all benefit from having a fully staffed
Commissioner Team, but we need your help to identify
prospects. Please contact District Commissioner Scott
Martin with names of folks that you think would be great!

would like to have it included in the newsletter, send it to
