On Tuesday the 17th we held our annual Exhibition in the Airlie
Hall. A very good display of this years work done by our members. It covered a wide range of skills, subjects and materials,
Pencil , Pastels,Water Color, Acrylic and Oils. This we are glad
to say was well attended by the folks of Alyth and further afield.
Who enjoyed some refreshments and took part in a fund raising
Raffle the main prize of which was a voucher for the Alyth Hotel
won by Irene Cruickanks and a lovely bottle of Spiced Rum as
second prize, which was donated by the Alyth Hotel, and won
by Sinclair Reid . The only blot on the day was the lack of our
founder member Biddy Hunter whose funeral took place earlier
in the day which caused a quiet shadow to an otherwise perfect
day

Perthshire Brass
It's been a while since I reported to Alyth Voice on behalf of the band, so we've got plenty to catch up on!
The beginning of the year is always dominated by preparations for the Scottish Championships. We were hoping to
get a better result than the previous year, but knew we were up against some top quality bands in the 2nd Section
following promotion in 2012. I sat back into the euphonium seat for the first time since 2010 to allow my good friend Jason Blyth a crack at conducting us, and this move worked out well as we finished 4th, equalling our highest ever national ranking! I'd like to think that it was the excellent
euphonium playing that impressed the judges, and Jason would argue that the improvement in the conducting was the difference, but the truth is
that the band has a great balance to it with quality players throughout and a brilliant atmosphere between us all which ensures full and productive
rehearsals.
These rehearsals are now focusing on our summer tour to Bydgoszcz, Perth's twin city in Poland. We have been working hard to raise funds for
this trip, and have been very lucky to receive various grants from the Gannochy Trust, Cairncross Trust, Thomson Trust, the Guildry of Perth and
several round tables and rotary clubs. We still have some fundraising to do for tour, and of course we have to work hard all year round to cover
our running costs. To this end, we have a coffee morning in the Airlie Street Hall on Saturday 12th July and would love to see you all there. We
are also extremely grateful to the Alyth Quiz League, and in particular the Strathmore Golf Centre team who kindly donated their share of the
year's profits to the band. Funding is an issue for every organisation, and generous donations such as this allow us the freedom to go out and
support other charities.
Our youth band continues to offer local kids
a first step into the world of brass banding,
and they are a busy bunch as always. They
enjoyed playing at Alyth Gala Day and we
were pleased to see the usual warm welcome for them from the Alyth community on
what was a well run day by the organisers in
spite of the weather! 'PYB' have also been
involved in all sorts of concerts including a
successful fundraiser for Perth & Kinross
Music Foundation, which gives assistance to
children who face financial barriers to learning music. Their strong belief is that any child
with the desire to learn to play a musical
instrument should do so. Our organisation
reflects this inclusive notion and anyone who
has seen the band play will surely agree that
we have a huge spectrum of ability, each
player contributing as best they can so that
the whole is greater than the sum of the
equal parts.
By far the biggest story of our year has been the progress we have made with our band room. It has genuinely been a dream come true that we
have taken on the Darnhall Club as our own, and Perth and Kinross Council have been amazing in their commitment and support. We have had
builders, joiners and sparkys coming and going for months now but we don't mind at all because we will soon have a band room that we can rehearse in all year round! We have had our first social event in it too, a quiz night, and plan to have many more. For those of us who have been in
the band for a long time, this is something we have wanted for years and the reality is that the whole band is improving simply by having our own
home, a stronger identity, and the freedom to rehearse whenever we want. Every time he walks into the band room, my Dad has a wide smile on
his face as he knows better than anyone how lucky we have been. Aside from the tour, the summer will be dominated by DIY with everyone
mucking in to make Darnhall feel like home.
Bingo Tea Thanks
The Menzies family would like to thank everyone who
supported their fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care
by coming to the Bingo Tea in Alyth Town Hall. Also
thanks to everyone who donated cash,bingo prizes,
raffle prizes and made sandwiches and who gave of
their time on the night to make sure everything went
smoothly.
We raised a fantastic amount of £917.90 and we were
delighted so thanks everyone very much.

Happy event in Alyth Town Hall on Thursday 19th July.
After 14 years, hall keepers Richard and Rosemary Duncan are moving
on. Richard and Rosemary have looked after the town hall users, taken
bookings and generally ensured that the Town Hall was seen as a great
place for local people and groups to hold all sorts of events.
The Halls Committee, representatives of local groups, and friends of
Richard and Rosemary gathered in the Lesser Hall in the Town Hall to
celebrate all the hard work that the couple have done for the community
in general and the hall users in particular, over the years.
Fabric Convenor David McLaren made a heartfelt speech thanking Richard and Rosemary for all their help over all the years. David pointed out
that it was not always obvious how much work the couple put in to ensure
that hall users experience in the hall was a good one.
David made a presentation from the committee of a voucher and a bouquet of flowers for Richard and Rosemary.
David also presented Jean Coleman with a bouquet of flowers. Jean has
been helping the committee with the day to day running of the Town Hall.
Halls Committee Chair Jessie McLean had provided a buffet and drinks
for Richard, Rosemary and their guests.

LILY MACKAY
CELEBRATING HER 100TH BIRTHDAY
MAY 28 2014
Born and brought up in Aberdeen, Lily was one of seven children but she was the bold one
who always had the most adventurous spirit. Her teens were full of unfulfilled dreams of going
to work in America or opening a shop and running her own business!
In 1935 she married Jimmy McLeod and they had two sons, Dennis and James before leaving
Aberdeen in 1947 to move to Alyth, Perthshire. There they ran a chip shop and café, The
Springbank Café but it’s still referred to locally as The Honky Tonk. It was in Alyth that their
only daughter Donna was born.
Lily and Jimmy made a great success of the business. As well as lunches and teas and outside catering events it was a popular venue for weddings and coach parties. In 1960 they converted the café into a licensed restaurant, The Isla Restaurant and in the age of the dinner
dance and basket suppers it proved to be a popular venue with people coming from as far as
Dundee for their Saturday night entertainment.
Having sold the business they went on to managing various pubs in the Dundee area and in
the 1970’s settled in the Shakespeare Bar in Arbroath where, at the age of fifty, she began to
play darts and formed the Shakespeare Ladies Dart Team. Lily was also a keen member of
the Scottish Licensed Trade Association and enjoyed the local events as well as attending
national conferences.
After retiring she and Jimmy moved to Kirkcaldy where her son James was also in the trade.
Following Jimmy’s death in 1980, Lily moved back briefly to Arbroath beside her daughter before marrying old family friend Will Mackay They
settled down to married life in the High Street Alyth. Will died in 2008 only a few months before their Silver Wedding!
Despite having a stroke a number of years ago Lily lived with on her own, the help of carers, until eighteen months ago when, as the result of a
broken ankle, she had to move into Meigle Country House Care Home.
Much of the success of the businesses was due to Lily’s welcoming, sociable personality – which she retains to this day! She loves seeing the
many visitors who still call on her. She is so interesting to talk to with her love of current affairs, sports and people in general. Her memory of
both local and national events is prodigious and her ability to remember faces is amazing. When out for a meal just a few weeks ago she spotted
a couple celebrating their Diamond Wedding. She watched the company as they left and declared that she recognized the couple. She had catered for their wedding reception sixty years previously!
Lily was joined for her celebration in the Airlie Street Hall in Alyth by friends and carers as well as her family of three children - Dennis and family
coming over from Canada, seven of her nine grandchildren, as well as her five great-grandchildren.

Irene Robertson’s Investiture
A sunny Monday morning, the 16th June, saw a cheerful gathering of folk in the Airlie Street Hall to witness the investiture of Irene Robertson
with the British Empire Medal.
Our invitations had asked us to be in place by 11.50, and so we were. We took our seats and waited amid a quiet hum of conversation, while a
youthful string quartet played excerpts from pieces by JS Bach and Handel. Then, at mid-day, the imposing figure of the Burgh Chamberlain of
Perth entered the room, resplendent in his scarlet faced tail coat with its brass buttons, and commanded us to rise. We rose as one to the music
of ‘Heilan’ Laddie,’ and Her Majesty’s Lieutenant, Brigadier Melville Jameson CBE, entered the hall, accompanied by his ADC and the piper.
Liz Grant, Provost of Perth, and Sir Ian Grant both made short speeches in praise of Irene and the good works she had performed.
The Lord Lieutenant stood, ready to make his speech and pin the medal onto Irene’s dress when the moment came. In due course she was summoned for the investiture itself. The ADC stood ready with the BEM on a cushion, and the Lord-Lieutenant pinned the badge with its bright pink
ribbon onto the bodice of her elegant dress. Irene looked beautiful and we were proud to see her rewarded in the company of her friends in Alyth.

Neverendum I wish it was over! Or Referendum....I don't know much about it and I haven't thought about it.
For some, who have decided on how they are going to vote in this year's referendum they may well wish that it was already over as papers and
TV have little else in them. These people are not going to change their minds. If you fall into this camp you need to ensure that you are registered to vote!
However, there are a large number of people who have not yet started to think about the question ““Should Scotland be an independent country?” This is the most important question of your life as it will affect almost everything in our daily lives. This question needs a lot of thought and
research with facts from both sides of the debate.
First things first! Before you even start to gather information, it is imperative that you are registered to vote, if eligible. You can vote in the referendum if you are registered to vote in Scotland, and are 16 or over on 18 September 2014 and are:
· a British citizen living in Scotland
· a European Union citizen living in Scotland, or
· a qualifying Commonwealth citizen living in Scotland
(Qualifying Commonwealth citizens are people who have leave (permission) to enter or remain in the UK, do not need to have such leave or are

Service personnel posted outside of Scotland along with their spouse or civil partner and any 16 or 17 year old children may also vote in the
referendum if they are registered to vote in Scotland.
Am I registered to vote?
If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to vote. In October and November 2013, each household was sent two forms by their local electoral
registration office requesting the details of all those who will be eligible to vote.

To vote in this referendum you must be registered by 2 September 2014.
And now to the fact finding mission! If you have access to the internet, you can search for things like “how will the referendum affect me” or “what
will an independent Scotland cost”. There are many many factors to be taken into consideration. We live rurally – and so the issues are different
than the big cities. Everything that is written and said needs to be taken with a pinch of salt – from both sides! Try to verify claims and statements
– issues like currency, jobs, savings, mortgages and defence are important to all. We need facts from both sides in order to make an informed
decision. Try to ascertain where the facts have come from – are they independent or do the people making the claims have a vested interest for
one side or the other? Are any figures backed up in other reports? What are the costs to you, your family and community to leave the union?
What are the benefits of leaving or staying? Go to public meetings from both sides and ask questions, read up as much as you can. This decision is not a quick-fire vote for a party that you have perhaps always voted for. This transcends party politics. This is not about watching Braveheart and saying freedom! This is not the next 4 years of a government – this is a huge decision and should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately
once you start to do some research you will come across a lot of name calling, and tit-for-tatt claims. It is up to the electorate to see through this
and question the real claims. Talk things over with friends from both camps, listen to the discussions, question the source of the information and
most importantly make your own mind up!
Voter apathy in the UK is quite appalling – only 50% of voters turned out for the last Holyrood election. I really hope that there is at least 80%
turnout with at least 80% majority, then we can all get on with it. If there is a low turn out or an unconvincing majority we will be revisiting this
issue.
Please ensure you are registered to vote, please read up as much as you can from both sides and please vote!

The Cinema Comes to Alyth!
Alyth Amateur FC 2013-14 did themselves and Alyth proud when over
the season they finished with 4 trophies out of a possible 5 and were
promoted to the 1st Division as League Champions. No mean feat!
The manager and team have worked extremely hard and we would
like to thank them for all their hard work.
An almost full house in the Ogilvie Rooms enjoyed the showing of
“Philomena” starring Judi Dench. This was the second film shown and
we look forward to more film goodies at the monthly night.
The Club now has a fully constituted committee who select the films to
be shown.
Behind them is a team of willing helpers which include sponsors and
the good people of Alyth and surrounding district who support them at
matches home and away, also a good support at the monthly bingos.
Without you all there would be no team as your support is invaluable.
So thank you all for whatever part you play, it is all gratefully received.

Despite the earnest attempts to increase the numbers of the Choral
Union, membership has fallen steadily and it is with great regret thatr
after the Christmas Concert ,the Choral Union would cease to continue in its present form.
Alyth Football Club for winning the triple Cup matches and the
League. WOW!
A special Concert is planned for Christmas with Perthshire Brass,
soloists and Choir members.
While kicking footballs around we should mention the Alyth Cub
Scouts who won their wee league. Perhaps we should enter a team in
the World Cup!!!
An invitation is extended to past members of every section to come
and join the Choral for that final performance . We hope it will be a
finale to remember!
Not to mention (as in last months Voice), Catherine Gordon and
Calum Tosh for their work with AYP. They received the
Saltire Award.
Rehearsals will resume in the Church in September. Date to be verified.

THE TEDDY BEARS TRAIL 2014
Teddy’s Car Choice
The Teddy Bears Trail 2014 is sponsored by Alyth & District Business Association and is a competition that has been designed
for the young and the young at heart. Teddy has once again arrived in Alyth, Scotland for his Summer Holidays and this year
he has decided to change his car, his present one is giving him a lot of trouble. He cannot decide on whether he wants a new
car petrol or diesel, a classic or a veteran model or an old banger as long as it goes.
Teddy has asked many businesses in Alyth to assisting him by displaying lots of different models or photographs of cars alongside their Teddy Bears in their windows to help him make up his mind.
Collect a free entry form from The Spar, Commercial Street or Costcutters, Airlie Street follow the instructions. Look for the
Teddy Bears in the shop windows and write down the make and model of the cars on display there may be more than one
Teddy with cars in some of the windows.
The competition runs from the 1st of July to the 31st of August.
For the young ones taking part please look and listen for the traffic as you cross the roads. Once you have answered all the
questions please take your entry forms to J. & M. Kay, Ladies & Gents Hairdresser, 13 Airlie Street, Alyth. It is hoped you all
have fun completing the Teddy Bears Trail, and visitors to the town have enjoyed their visit to Alyth.
Thanks must be expressed to the compiler Rev Angela Maughan for all her work in producing the entry form, Mr Charles
Palmer and staff of Classic Restorations for supply all the photos and models and all the businesses for their Teddy Bear

Alyth Halls Committee News
June 2014
There has been a huge amount happening as far as the Alyth Halls
Committee are concerned. The Committee are responsible for managing the running of the Town Hall and the Ogilvie Rooms under a management agreement with Perth and Kinross Council.
After 14 years as the hall keepers for the Town Hall, Richard and
Rosemary Duncan are moving on. Richard and Rosemary have
worked hard to ensure the smooth running and the success of the
Town Hall. The Committee thank them for all their hard work and wish
them all the best for the future. As this is written, we are currently in
the middle of the recruitment process for a new hall keeper.
At this stage, it is only right to mention the hall keeper for the Ogilvie
Rooms. Tina Tripney has carried out her duties in a friendly, efficient
manner for several year. Her tireless work is much appreciated.
David McLaren our Fabric Convenor, continues to do sterling work,
and has done much to improve the facilities in both halls. Over the
summer, David is arranging for new double glazing to be installed in
the Town Hall.
Sadly, David has decided to call it a day, and is staying on for a couple
of months to help us out during the summer. David’s hard work and
wise words will be sorely missed by the Committee.
As a result we are in desperate need of a Fabric Convenor. This is a
very important role, and it is important that we fill David’s shoes as
soon as possible.

please contact Sandy McCurdy Secretary.
Jessie McLean as Chair/Treasurer ensures that we continue to maximise our revenues by a combination of grant funding and hall users’
fees. We are trying hard to keep fees at existing levels, but are under
no illusions that with public funding going through a difficult time, we
must continue to innovate.
We are always looking for new committee members willing to do a little
bit for the good of the town.

Stride for Life is a walking project providing
FREE led walks for individuals in their community. The group meets on a Tuesday at
1.30pm at The Airlie Street Hall. Our walks
last approximately 45-50 minutes. Walking
is a great way to keep active and make you
feel better. We think it's much more fun
walking in a group and enjoying a good old
blether! On average we have about twelve
walkers so why not come and join
us. There is no need to book, just turn up

Are You Really Relaxed?
Top o’Toon
The theme this month is the art of relaxation. Eh – art? Isn’t relaxation as simple as putting our feet up, watching some (admittedly)
mind-numbing television, or reading a book? Well, everything is
relative and compared to, say, working on the trading floor of the
London Stock Exchange then, yes, these things are certainly relaxing. They are also, to a greater or lesser degree, also stimulating –
which is not want we want if we wish to gain the benefits of true
relaxation.
First things first.
This time of year, I especially look forward to my morning dogwalking – one reason being the spring birdsong, so powerful it can
almost drown out any intrusive negative or disruptive thoughts that
might try to enter my consciousness. My particular favourites are
the repetitive yet endlessly varied phrases of the song thrush, the
melodic babbling of the blackcap, and even the surprisingly tuneful
song of the resident dippers in Alyth Burn.
Eh cannae be alaine in meh technic dinosaur nithiness. Dinnae hae a
computer, mobile, microwave, dinnae do “soaps” ony mair – Tae
mony archaic reasons! Are ye fed up wi’ ower mony repeat adverts?
Do they think we’re a’ daft numpties?
Research shows that birdsong can help us to relax following a period of stress. There are a number of theories why this should be. It
certainly seems to sooth us and reduce our state of arousal, but
may be an evolutionary trait signaling that there are no predators
around and we can feel safe. We may also associate birdsong with
positive memories from our childhood or relaxed holidays in the
countryside. However it’s difficult to determine whether it’s specifically the birdsong that decreases stress, or the feeling of being part
of nature it may evoke, as studies using recorded birdsong have
also shown benefits.

begin to bring some real benefits in terms of reduced anxiety, improved confidence, concentration and sleep. Some of you may already practice some form of meditation, yoga, or simply listening
quietly to one of the many relaxation recordings designed specifically for the purpose.

Family History Project - VAD Nurses Alyth
Three months ago we received an enquiry from the London based
nephew of a WWI veteran who was nursed in Scotland.
Frank Starkey from Oldham, who died in 1978, left a tin tobacco box
of his memorabilia of the First World War. He was injured, physically
and mentally, in the Dardanelles; repatriated by hospital ship and sent
to recuperate from his 'tremors' in a series of Scottish hospitals: The
Royal Victoria Hospital, Craigleith, Edinburgh; Keir House, Dunblane
and the V.A.D. Hospital, Perth. While he was in the latter he was
nursed by a young V.A.D. nurse from Alyth, who signed herself 'J.
Galloway' on two postcards Frank kept, one showing her seated in the
front row and a note to say Frank would be able to identify her. Family
diaries record that Frank was in the V.A.D. hospital between August
and October 1915.
The British Red Cross archives in London have an index of nurses who served under the Joint War Committee in the Great War. Unfortunately J.
Galloway’s record has not survived in the 90% of records which did. In our archive we know the Galloway family farmed Westfield during that time.
We think the daughter Jessie (who died in 1963 at West Park, St. Ninian’s Road) may be nurse J. Galloway, however we have no evidence to
support this.
For two months we have been searching for information on the Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses from Alyth. In particular for confirmation Jessie
Galloway was in the VAD.
The Alyth Voice, Craigie Column in The Courier, our own Facebook page, AK Bell Library Local Studies, have all been involved, and helped in
one way or another to advise there is no news of Jessie’s connection in their records.
We also contacted the Earl of Airlie to confirm whether the lady pictured in the middle of the nurses could be his grandmother, The Dowager
Countess of Airlie, Lady Mabell, who was very involved in the local Red Cross branch during WWI (a fascinating book covers this time in her life
“Thatched with Gold”). Although not 100% certain it is likely from her age and appearance that the lady in the photograph is Lady Mabell.
HOWEVER, we have had a significant breakthrough this week when one of our FHP visitors from past years, Alistair Ferguson, emailed to say
they have identified one of the nurses as being his wife Sheila’s Aunt Nora.
Nora is sitting front right in the VAD photograph (left below), and was daughter of Alexander and Margaret Macpherson. She was born 20 June
1898 in Chapel St Alyth. The right hand photograph was provided by Alistair & Sheila for comparison.
During our enquiries we also received a list of Auxiliary Hospitals during WWI from the British Red Cross. Ruthven House is listed (by Meigle) and
it prompted us to look at a photo of Ruthven House we have in the archive.
Bingo! The glass above the front door is identical in both. The postcard was handed in to the archive with a date of 1920s, unverified. In 1915
there was obviously a shrub border or similar in front of the house, which makes us suspect the postcard is earlier.
One VAD nurse down, 19 to go!

SUMMER FITNESS
Summer is coming and as much as you may love the salty aroma of the ocean and
warm, sun-kissed skin in the summer, don’t forget your fitness routine.
Lots of people work really hard in the run up to their summer holidays then forget all
about their fitness during and afterwards, losing some if not all of the benefits that
they worked so hard to gain.
With lots more social events during July and August – weddings, bbqs, festivals etcit is even more important to maintain your weekly routine than any other time of the
year. You don’t want to regret those additional glasses of wine or yummy bbq treats.
So here are a few hints to help keep your fitness levels up and make the most of
your workouts during your summer holidays.
Always pack your Trainers (and unpack them when you get there)
If your trainers are the first thing you see when you wake each morning you’ll be reminded that you brought them with the intention of keeping up
with your fitness :)
Power Walk/ Jog on the Beach
The added resistance from the sand means that you’ll get a much better workout for your legs and glutes as well working your core harder as you
keep your balance.
Hire A Bike
A great way to explore the area you are visiting and get some exercise too :)
Plan your Daily Activities Before you go
Check out the local area to see what’s on offer – hiking tours, country park
visits, sports programs etc. and book a couple of active days in while you are
there to make sure that at least you get some exercise on those days.
Swim Swim Swim
This is the best form of holiday fitness. A full body workout and can help to
keep you cool and mobile in between long, hot, sunbathing sessions. Whether
in the pool or with the added wave resistance in the sea or ocean – a perfect
way to get your heart rate up, work your muscles and earn your evening cocktails :)
But always remember the most important tip –
MAKE IT FUN :)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me so far with raising money. I recently took on a campaigning stall for
Diabetes UK Week 'I can '. This was held in Alyth Bakehouse and i was grateful for Steven letting me use the space. Many people came and
donated loose change and also picked up some of the wide range of leaflets available. I was really overwhelmed with so many people either with
Diabetes or on the border line.
One other thing is that I'm looking for local businesses to take this opportunity and give a donation towards my fundraising this year. Any business that does will receive a letter of thanks and also logos and names will be used on posters were possible. If you would like to make a donation, please let me know.
My sponsored walk was on the last Sunday of June (29th), the deadline for the Alyth Voice would have been passed so I will update in the edition
of August.

Alyth Bakehouse
A Modern Apprenticeship at Alyth Bakehouse not
only gave Dawn Arthur a new career, but also
restored her confidence and gave her a whole
new lease of life.
“I’m a late student,” said Dawn, who is from Alyth.
“I’d spent years at home as a carer for both my
parents and I think in a way I went to pieces after
they died,” she said.
Dawn said that initially she could hardly bear to
leave the house.
The 49 year old explained: “It was hard enough
even to go into the Bakehouse as a customer
and then one day the owner, Steven Boath, offered me a job.
“That was four years ago and I started with ten
hours a week, petrified to be left on my own,” she
added.
Dawn made a conscious decision that now was the time to go for every opportunity and started a Level 2 Modern Apprentice which has totally
changed her life.
She has now completed her Level 3 Food and Drink Modern Apprenticeship and was nominated at Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards both
last year and this.
“She’s a different person,” said Steven, the owner of Alyth Bakehouse.
He added: “Recently she was left in charge of the Bakehouse for three weeks and the takings were the highest we’ve recorded. As a result she had
to order new stock and she used her initiative and just went ahead and did so.
“She’s involved in training other staff now and is a total asset to the business, who is well known throughout the town by everyone.”

Tree Planting at Springbank Road
Community Trust Meeting
'Great turn out on Wednesday night for the public meeting about the
Town Centre regeneration and how setting up a Community Development Trust might help support it - estimates around 70 folk. We
showed the Comrie Community Development Trust film and a wee
film maid by AYP about what our young folk wanted to see happening in Alyth too. A big mandate from the room to go ahead and set a
Community Development Trust up and around 30 names and addresses of folk who are up for putting their shoulder to the wheel to
help in the setting up! Anyone want to find out more or add their

Paul & Barbara Prettyman had a great day planting trees around our
new homes with the children (pictured) who live in our street. They
were very enthusiastic and are now looking after “their” trees, helping
with watering etc.

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
I claim it as pure blind co-incidence and I am sticking to it. It just so happened that the weekend the Beavers headed south east on their day trip
and sleepover in the Scout Hut, the Scouts and Cubs headed in the complete opposite direction for a weekend at Crieff. The Beavers had a fabulous time at St Andrews visiting the Sea Life Centre and a visit to the
beach. Heather, Claire Ross & Alex, gluttons for punishment that they are,
then brought the entire Colony back to the Scout Hut for an overnight
sleepover. By all accounts, the Beavers were up bright ( and early) and
there was great enthusiasm for breakfast. But as the day progressed the
guys slowed down a bit and by the late hour of 9.00am, were completely
exhausted – time for a sharp exit. Well done the Beavers for taking part
and my compliments to the Leaders for arranging such an adventure for
them. Meanwhile, not a thousand miles away, the Cubs and Scouts had set
up camp at the campsite at Craggan just outside Crieff. The Cubs set forth
on the Friday night and quickly had their tents up as the cooks got underway with the provision for the inner man. The Scouts had a much more
relaxed approach to the exodus by meeting on the Saturday morning and
just about managed to set camp before lunch. This was achieved by the
instruction there were getting nothing to eat until the canvas had been converted from the horizontal ! There has been a long tradition in Alyth scouts
for a quick lunch – jeelie pieces ! Despite the suggestions from that popular
song - the only direction they can be flung is down the throat. Copious
quantities of this delicacy are always available in case starvation might set
in between meals. However this option is highly dangerous when it comes
to the Explorer Scouts / Young Leaders who only have one meal a day – it
starts in the morning and last for the remainder of the day. As one parent
put it – don’t stand still – you might become the next course!!
The weather could have been a bit kinder for us on the Sunday – but it
was certainly character forming. One passing observation was the two
Scouts who were washing the dishes on our splendid wash stand, in the
pouring rain and having washed them attempting to dry them using a
cloth which had long lost any former capacity for drying anything. The
task of moving the moisture from one side of the plates to the other now
completed, our enthusiastic lads proceeded to stack them in the patrol
box which already had the bottom swimming with water. A swift manoeuvre to bail out the box by tipping it over resulted in the clean but wet dishes escaping their captive container and decorating the campsite. “We’ll
gie them a wash whin we get hame”.

Family History Project
In March just after the first appeal to identify these photographs, we had a second enquiry from Missouri USA looking for Powrie ancestors. Connecting the enquirer with our
Canadian friend noted in the email trail below, it turned out they were indeed searching
for the same family and did not know of each other. Amazingly they both planned to
visit Scotland last week!
Ellen from Canada was on a coach trip stopping in Dunkeld on Wednesday and she
took a taxi over to Alyth so she could walk in her ancestors’ footsteps. Nancy is touring
the UK from Missouri with her family and they arranged to meet Ellen in Edinburgh on
Friday. Both were delighted to meet each other and to be connected through Alyth Family History Project. Today Nancy and her family visited AlythParish Church and left with
local cemetery maps and route plans to walk where Powries once walked.
While searching for Powries in the 1881 Census today we realised that David Powrie lived at “Backburn” Alyth, which no longer exists but was at
one time the row of cottages now known as Loyal Cottages (just off Loyal Road on the right before the Lands of Loyal Hotel drive). Backburn was
given its name as the cottages lay along a small stream starting at Kirklandbank, passing Den Well, bordering Loyal House and running east towards its junction with the Alyth Burn at Pitcrocknie.
Could the cottage below (David Powrie’s home) be one of Loyal Cottages? Was the road up to Loyal passing Hay Street lined by stone dykes and
trees in days gone by?
Family History Project - Corporal William A. Mitchell
Many thanks to the mystery author who popped a note through my door this week, which read…
“William Mitchell, Scots Guards. Son of Mr & Mrs David Mitchell, Hay Street Shepherd to a Mr. MacKinnon, Blairgowrie Brother Angus, Australian
Army killed June 1915 at Dardanelles. Copied out of Alyth Guardian 1916.”
The interest in finding Wm. Mitchell’s living relatives is to let them know a lighter made in the trenches by Wm. Mitchell will be put into theRegimental Museum this year. Our enquirer bought the “trench art” item and has been researching its history. To be able to add Wm. Mitchell’s family history to it will bring the lighter to life in a museum case.
As you can see the copper and tin lighter has been fashioned from regimental badges, and engraved with Wm. Mitchell’s details. It is quite remarkable that an item such as this could have been made in the trenches whilst enduring the horrors of war.

Alyth Trainee Plumber Wins Award
A Dundee & Angus College prize winner saw skills recognised on a
national stage when he took part in the 39th Skillplumb Competition.
David Elder (19) a 3rd year apprentice with Murray Pennycook Plumbing & Heating Alyth was one of the Country’s top trainee plumbers
who took part in an event held in Falkirk winning 3rd prize overall.

At the AGM of the Alyth Senior Citizens` Lunch and Socialising
Club held on Monday 26th May we all learnt, with sadness, that
our Mary (Mary Hogg) wished to retire from all her various duties
within the Club.
Over the years she has shown devoted dedication to all her responsibilities such as `Treasurer` of this Club, `Walk Leader` and
Walk arranger for the `Stride for Life` group, `Treasurer ` and organiser of the Exercise Group, together with being involved with a
number of other groups within the Community of Alyth.
Throughout she has proved to be a powerful member of the Community. Her concern for others has resulted in a dedication to all
groups which can be truly described as `Outstanding` and ` Second to None`. This has been despite her dealing with some hard
ups and downs with her close family.
She will be greatly and sadly missed by everyone concerned within the many groups and especially by those of us who have worked closely with her.
So, MARY – Many thanks for your company and devotion to our Community. Well done Mary and wherever you and Brian happen to finally rest have
a great time and God go with you.
