LCA POETRY ‘SLAM DUNK’
On the 20th March 2015 LCA students from Year 8 to 11 were involved in a poetry slam. Pupils
had the opportunity to work with a local writer to create and perform their own poems alongside
world famous poet Lemn Sissay. The audience was made up of pupils from other schools, the
general public, and other local artists and poets. The pupils who were involved created some
amazing poetry and should be very proud of what they achieved.

Thursday 5th March 2015 was World Book Day.#

World Book Day is an international celebration of everything book-related and an

Meets Rachael Mackenzie
!Leeds City Academy received a knockout visit
from our Sky Sports athlete mentor last week.
Rachael Mackenzie is a world champion Thai-Boxer.
She has been a professional athlete for over 12
years. Rachel has also taken two British titles – both
by knockout – and a European title.
Throughout her Thai-boxing career Rachael has had
to overcome prejudice from people who do not
believe women should compete in contact sports.
Her success and perseverance has helped Rachael to
improve the
profile of, and
opportunities
for, female Thaiboxers.

Having been an Athlete Mentor for several years,
Rachael comments: “My role as an Athlete
Mentor has enabled me to inspire and motivate
young people across the UK to be the best they
can be. Sky Sports Living for Sport offers a great
channel for young people to achieve their goals
and better themselves.”
“The young people I meet are so inspiring for
me. It is amazing to see so much enthusiasm and
desire to achieve. By learning new skills and
disciplines that they can apply to all aspects of
life, today’s youngsters can really strive to
achieve all of their aspirations.”
Year 11 were lucky enough to have had a Thai-Boxing lesson with Rachael, which they seemed to
thoroughly enjoy! Students were taught specific styles of defensive and attacking skills. Some even
managed to build these into a combination sequence.
Rachael is now linked with Leeds City Academy an will be visiting again in May. She is working alongside
Miss Hindle in PE to promote leadership and achievement with a group of year 8 girls. Together with Sky
Sports, LCA PE department is hoping to raise the profile of sports and physical activity in school. More
news on how the year 8 girls are progressing will be in the next issue of LCA News!

Hello, my name is Sarra Al-Janabi, and today I’m going to show you LCA’s recipe of the month.
So, today’s recipe is MINT CHEESECAKE , and even though it’s called cheesecake you don’t actually bake a cake,
in fact in this easy recipe that takes about 30 minutes you don’t even bake a cake at all. Unless you want to bake a
cake for the base instead of using chocolate.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Spaghetti Carbonara
!
You will need
!

1/4 packet of spaghetti
•
Salt to taste •
2 eggs
•
2-3 slices of smoked streaky bacon
•
Black pepper
•
Grated mature cheddar cheese
Method
1. Put the spaghetti in a pan, cover it with water, add a pinch of salt, and leave it to
boil.
2. Meanwhile; beat the eggs and place to one side, adding salt to taste if required. 3. Cut up the bacon into strips and fry in a little butter or oil until golden and crispy. 4. Once the spaghetti is cooked, you need to drain and return the spaghetti to the
still warm pan, stirring in the beaten egg, cooked bacon and black pepper to
taste. 5. Stir for 1-2 minutes; the heat of the sauce pan should just be enough to cook the
egg; but you can use a very low heat to keep it warm - too hot and the eggs will
become scrambled...

6. Serve immediately with the grated cheese. Serves 1 - 2

LCA News General Knowledge Topic of the Month!
World’s oldest Mummies found!
The Chinchorro mummies are mummified remains of individuals from
the South American Chinchorro culture, found in what is now
northern Chile and southern Peru. They are the oldest examples of artificially mummified human remains,
becoming popular up to two thousand years before the Egyptian mummies.
To put this in perspective, the earliest mummy that has been found in Egypt
dated around 3000 BC, while the oldest mummy recovered from
the Atacama Desert is dated around 7020 BC. The artificial mummies of
Chinchorro are believed to have first appeared around 5000 BC and reached
a peak around 3000 BC. Often Chinchorro mummies were elaborately prepared by removing the internal
organs and replacing them with vegetable fibres or animal hair. In some cases an embalmer would remove
the skin and flesh from the dead body and replace them with clay. Shell midden and bone chemistry
suggest that 90% of their diet was seafood. Many ancient cultures of fisher folk existed, tucked away in
the arid river valleys of the Andes, but the Chinchorro made themselves unique by their dedicated
preservation of the dead.
Radiocarbon dating reveals that the oldest discovered Chinchorro mummy
was that of a child from a site in the Camarones Valley, about 60 miles south
of Arica in Chile and dates from around 5050 BC. The mummies continued
to be made until about 1800 BC, making them contemporary with Las
Vegas culture and Valdivia culture in Ecuador and the Norte Chico

Red Nose, Step-up-day
On 13th March 2015 Year 9 and 10 students from LCA spent their
Step Up day doing something funny for money to raise cash for
Comic Relief. Comic Relief gives money and help to those
affected by famine and poverty across the world. Pupils took
part in fundraising activities such as face-painting, stand-up
comedy and juggling workshops, baking cakes to sell, silly
sports activities, and washing the cars of 19 very brave
members of staff. Pupils across the school also contributed £1
to the cause in exchange for a non-uniform day. We raised
£531 as a school, and the government will match this, giving us
a grand total of £1062 to give to those who are most in need.
Well done and a huge thank you to all who gave their time,
effort and money to make this Step Up day a success!

Nestle Workshop
On Wednesday 25 February 2015, Year 10 & 11 students took
part in a workshop that was delivered at Leeds City Academy by
‘MyKindaCrowd’, on behalf of Nestle. 40 students attended the 2
½ hour session which was focused around the STEM subjects with
a Factory Production Theme.
The group was split into 8
smaller groups with each group
then designing a factory that
produces instant coﬀee. The 6
production processes had to be
identified, from receiving the
raw coﬀee bean through to
packaging the instant coﬀee.
This may sound easy but after
the design process a number of
challenges took place. If a
group gave a correct answer to
a question they were allocated
a ‘green’ challenge which
basically enabled them to make
improvements to their factory.
If, however, the wrong answer
was given the group received a
‘red’ challenge which meant
they had a problem to deal with
which may have been a human
resources issue, contaminated
coﬀee, the marketing company
going into liquidation etc. Every
situation was based on real life
scenarios that had to be
resolved.
5 students have been selected to progress to the Nestle Assessment
Day in York which will take place on Wednesday 3 June 2015. At the
Assessment Centre students will be assessed in a variety of ways so
that they can showcase their individual skills which may then lead to
paid work experience at a Nestle Factory for a 2 week period over the
summer holidays.

“Thank you to Leeds City Academy for hosting the
Nestlé workshop for MyKindaCrowd last week. The session was a great success and the students
participated throughout with professionalism and
creativity that saw for a competitive selection
process. Thank you to the students for their
contributions. I was particularly impressed that
they asked a great deal of questions (something
Nestlé look for) and they made sure that they
understood at all times what was going on. It was
very hard to select only five but the individuals I
have chosen showed consistent hard work and
interaction, as well as stand out ideas and
processes”.

STEM EVENT
On 19th March 2015 a group of girls went to a STEM event (Science Technology Engineering and
Maths). This was an opportunity to raise awareness of STEM careers for young girls who still had not
decided what they would like to be when they are older as there are not enough women joining STEM
areas (only about 10% of each STEM business are female and 90% are men!) The women running this
event invited some women from diﬀerent STEM businesses to come and talk to the girls about their
jobs. There were women there in a variety of job, including RAF pilots, virtual reality designers, and
many more. It was surprising how many diﬀerent jobs there are in STEM businesses. After break they
set up diﬀerent stalls for the girls to go to and learn about the STEM businesses that fascinated them.
There were loads of FREE goodies ☺.
After lunch the girls were put into groups
and were given a chance to discuss
some things with women about how to
get into STEM business. One group
talked to a woman who manages an
engineering business. It was good fun
but she hoped that more females would
consider these businesses as STEM has
a serious lack of women! !

Dear Worried,
I can remember when I had exams; I was scared, worried and
thought I wouldn’t remember anything. One piece of advice my
parents and teachers gave me is that we have had years of
teaching and learning, so now is the time to relax and not to
panic.
Make a daily plan and rota. Rota in some study time, some
time to spend with your friends and family and most
importantly get some rest. A healthy body leads to a healthy
mind. You can also talk to your friends, teachers and parents
if it is really bothering you.

Dear Love Struck,
Some advice: if you are in Year 7, 8 or 9 you
should be studying and not thinking about boys!
Focus on being their friend, and in years to come
you will realise friendship is important it might
lead to romance. Also, most boys are only
interested in sport- that’s their true love!
If you are in Year 10 or 11 you should be revising
for your exams and not thinking about boysthey won’t get you the grades. At your age
education and friendship is important, so don’t
risk ruining it unless you know the boy feels the
same way and your parents approve.

should I do.
Confused Dear Confused,
Going to college and getting the right course for you is
important. My advice to you is to think about things like what
are you good at, what are your predicted grades, what job do
you want for your future? Talk to the school career advisor,
talk to your parents, teachers, and friends, and ask the college
if they do taster days. Just remember that whatever you
decide your parents, teachers and friends will always support
you.

Windows 10 is the future for
Microsoft, so here’s 10 things
about it!
1)Microsoft has announced that windows 10
will be free to update from Windows 7, 8 or
8.1, but only for one year
2)Windows 10 will have 2 browsers : Since
Internet explorer is dying Microsoft is
developing a new browser called ‘Spartan’
and it is supposed to be better than Safari.

3)Cortana and Windows 10 Phones will beat
the phone market: earlier this year Microsoft launched Cortana, a personal assistant like Siri on Apple
products. 4) Cheap and Best: Microsoft is working on developing cheap tablets and PCs. Windows 10 will take less
space, and it will be cheaper than Apple Macs.
5) Oﬃce 365 Universal and Oﬃce 2016: Microsoft is developing a very easy to operate and more useful Oﬃce
software. It will be cheaper, and this super update will become available end of this year.
6) Windows 10 will be great for gaming:Microsoft is bringing big changes to PC gaming with Windows 10. We’ll
see the debut of the DirectX 12 API, which promises faster, “closer-to-the-metal” gaming performance and
greater eﬃciency. Windows 10 will also include a "game DVR" mode to allow recordings of the last 30
seconds of play; all the better for social gaming. In the most dramatic gaming move, the company said it
would enable cross-platform, PC-Xbox play. Microsoft has attempted and failed to unite these platforms
before, however, so we'll see how it works this time.
7) Windows 10 will have hologram technology!
At the January consumer preview event, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Holographic, a set of technologies
that will enable 3D imaging and hologram projection for Windows 10 apps. A video and live demo showed
people wearing Microsoft HoloLens projection goggles to interact with remote coworkers, play a 3D version
of Minecraft, or explore a 3D projection of Mars. Developers will be able to use HoloStudio software to
develop 3D applications.
8) Windows 10 is coming out this year, maybe soon :After releasing a business-oriented major preview last
October and a consumer-oriented major preview in late January, the oﬃcial launch of Windows 10 is planned
for some time in this year. A major pre-release version, or possibly even the final version, is expected to drop
at the time of the company’s Build conference, April 29 - May 1.
9) And the Start menu : If you hated Windows 8's full-screen Start screen, you're in luck: the new Start menu
harkens back to the good old days, sitting on the left side of the screen and presenting that familiar pop-up
column of shortcuts. And if you liked Windows 8's approach, there's something here for you too: the new
menu will incorporate Live Tiles and can be customized.
10) Main Icons and Multitasking will Beat apple Mac OS X: Multitasking is not that fancy but it’s very fast and
handy then Macs and also the new icons will make windows 10 special from all angels. You will get your
choice to customize and apps border and multi windows will make it best OS Lunch ever. New Virtual Multi
