A nest of their own
F
or almost 60 years, The Rockport
Group of companies has been engaged in the development, construction, sales and management of quality residential, commercial and industrial
properties.
Rockport pioneered the condominium concept in Ontario. Jack Winberg,
CEO, says, “my father was the first ever to
register a condo in the city, in 1968.”
Following in his father’s innovative footsteps, Winberg and now his son Daniel,
demonstrate this type of forward thinking
in Rockport’s new project, The Nest, in the
emerging, hip, midtown Toronto neighbourhood of Hillcrest Village.
To be completed by the fall of 2016, The
Nest is just right for singles, young families
and empty nesters. This nine-storey midrise is a new project on St. Clair Avenue
West, with 122 suites ranging from onebedroom suites to two bedrooms plus den.
Street appeal is the result of the building’s design of unique stepped stacked
glass boxes with a distinctly geometric
sensibility. Most suites will have balconies or terraces that are six-feet wide. “Anything less and you can’t put a table and
two chairs out there,” Winberg says. The
terraces and balconies will also have gas
hookups for barbecues, eliminating the
need for residents to awkwardly “schlep”
propane tanks onto elevators and down
hallways, he adds. “Because who wants to
do that?”
“At Rockport, we are completely focused
on the needs of our customer, learning
what our customer wants and values in
a home and then striving to exceed ex-

construction and finishes. The Nest is the
result of this process, the best possible
combination of features and prices for

This desire to exceed expectations is
demonstrated in the building’s amenities,
sure to appeal to singles and young families. There is a beautiful indoor entertainment space for hosting parties, and a cool
outdoor roof-top lounge with a fire pit,
fully equipped kitchen, and barbecues for
residents to enjoy the view, socialize and
hang out. This ‘green’ building is built with
geothermal heating and cooling and other
sustainable features including an innovative fibre cement panel cladding.
Winberg says, “We know that in the long
term these innovations will save owners
money and enhance the value of their
property.”
The Nest also offers other thoughtful
and surprising amenities that are sure to
be appreciated. Every unit has unlimited
high speed Internet included in the maintenance fees. Additional concierge services can be accessed through a smartphone app, in which you can arrange to

rying to figure out what to do with
a new house?
One of the best in the business
has some tips for you.
Brian Gluckstein of Gluckstein Design,
who is internationally recognized as
one of the top 35 designers in the world
by Interior Design Journal, sheds some
light on a number of key topics, including matching a buyer with their ideal
dwelling.
“You look at a few things,” Gluckstein
said. “You look at the style of the environment, whether it’s modern or traditional, and you take into account the
style of the structure, because that often
dictates a great deal. And then, you look
at the personality of your client.
“Are they young or old? Adventurous or
traditional?” Gluckstein added. “You see
what’s going to be comfortable for them,
what’s going to reflect their lifestyle, and
so you do an evaluation of the clients
and their spaces.
“And then from there, we come up with
a design proposal that usually is right
on...a marriage of design and client.”
As an interior designer, Gluckstein gets
involved far before the finishing touches.
“Usually, we’ll start when the house is
in the design stages,” Gluckstein said.
“With a condo or house, we usually get
involved in the design stages, before it’s
been built.”
Being a part of the process that early
pays dividends later.
“When you do a new house, you really
want to work on the layout of the house,”
Gluckstein said. “We’re involved before
construction, so we’re part of that initial
team and we often have a great deal of
involvement in the layout of the house
or condo.
“It’s important for us to be involved in
the beginning because of the electrical
plans, shapes and sizes of rooms, and
all the finishes and designs, [which are]
all very important,” Gluckstein added.
“We’re really involved in the planning of
the spaces.”

Legacy Park celebrates grand opening
at Thornhill City Centre
A
mong Liberty Development Corporation’s most successful multiphase condominium projects is
the celebrated Thornhill City Centre, a
master-planned residential community
on Bathurst Street, just south of Highway
407.
With nine condo towers and 60 townhomes, already occupied since the community was first launched a decade ago,
Liberty has released Thornhill City Centre’s final phase, a 25-storey condo building called Legacy Park.
To celebrate the grand opening of Legacy Park, and welcome first-time buyers
to the community, Liberty Development
recently hosted a unique first-time buyer
seminar. With hundreds in attendance,
the event featured insightful comments
from a panel of industry experts including
Andrew Brethour, of PMA Brethour Realty
Inc.; Greg Tucci, from Falconeri, Munro,
Tucci LLP; and Renata Issakova, a mobile
mortgage specialist from TD Bank.
First-time buyers explored the sales centre and learned about Legacy Park’s distinctive architecture (by the award winning
Kirkor Architects), amazing amenities, and
its well designed, large suites, which range
from 563 to 968 square feet (from one-bedroom to two-plus-den layouts).
Amenities at Legacy Park will include a
state-of-the-art fitness facility, as well as a
sauna and whirlpool for residents to relax
and unwind. Other features and amenities will include a party room with sleek
lounge-style seating and a modern bar, a
media room and a golf simulator.
Legacy Park will overlook the community’s centrepiece, a five-acre lush green
oasis named Thornhill Green, the City of
Vaughan’s first urban park. Offering the
ultimate in “green” living, Legacy Park will
raise the bar in sustainability, with environmentally friendly features such as the
beautifully landscaped roof top terrace.
Located just north of the fashionable
Promenade Centre and the dynamic new
shopping plazas along Centre Street, Legacy Park at Thornhill City Centre is conveniently located just minutes from public transit via VIVA, York Region Transit
and the TTC.
With quick access to public transit, getting around the region will be easy, while
Legacy Park’s proximity to Highways 407,
400 and the 404 will make it easy to get
just about anywhere in the GTA.
“While we celebrated the launch of Legacy Park with first-time buyers, this is a
community that appeals equally to those
looking to downsize,” says Liberty Development’s senior vice-president and general counsel, Marco Filice.
“It has something for everyone. A prime
location, iconic architecture and a range
of dynamic lifestyle features, Legacy Park
promises to be one of the most successful
launches, in one of our most successful
communities.” n

Gluckstein, who was named Canada’s favourite interior designer by
Canadian House and Home, typically loves what he’s working on at the
moment.
“I think your current projects are
always your favourite projects,”
Gluckstein said. “You’re trying new
things, so it’s always the projects
of the moment which are fun projects.”
But what was his most beloved job
ever?
“I could never tell you my alltime favourites, because then what
would the other people think?” said
Gluckstein with a chuckle.
Although Gluckstein does enjoy
working at the cutting edge of design, he warns buyers about getting
too caught up in the current times.
“I think that there are always a lot
of trends and I always say that you
don’t want to do any of the permanent elements too trendy,” Gluckstein said. “If a certain colour is
popular right now, I’d restrict that to
accessories or paint.
“Where you have to be much
more thoughtful about the longevity of things is when you’re doing the
permanent parts of the house, like
the floor, kitchen, bathroom, things
like that.”
That being said, there are popular
current options that should hold up
well into the future.
“We’re seeing a lot of light-coloured reclaimed floors, wood floors
that have a taupe grey wash to
them, [as] a big trend right now,”
Gluckstein said. “It’s not something that’s trendy, because we’ve
seen it in Europe for centuries, but
it’s come to Canada and it’s very
serviceable because it wears very
well. [Some more] big moves are
towards free-standing tubs in the
bathrooms, and in kitchens, we’re
seeing cabinetry looking more like
furniture and not all matching,”
Gluckstein added. “As well, home
gyms are big trends now, [ones]that
have exercise areas, massage rooms,
saunas, steams, and whirlpools.
“It’s the whole idea of wellness,
exercise, and fitness, but in a very
sophisticated way.” n
