Rick Ramos, our hike organizer, has set up a wonderful group of hikes.
There will be one hike on Friday afternoon at 1:00, August 15. On
Saturday morning, a range of choices is offered, from energetic to easy,
from educational to just fun. Walk through tunnels, learn about
archaeology , photography, and geology, go swimming, and more. It’s
one of the best parts of the weekend.
Just enjoy the woods and the company.

COME TO CLAIR TAPPAAN TO HEAR GREAT MUSIC
SATURDAY AFTERNOON, AUGUST 16, AT 3:00 WITH WINE AND CHEESE IN THE WOODS
WITH
STEPHEN HOLLAND
A composer, writer, performer and teacher, Stephen has traveled extensively in Latin America and Europe,
performing and collecting songs. The rhythmic and harmonic invention of the music of Brazil and the
romantic intensity of the Spanish-American authors of Nueva Cancion have informed his work, as have the
ancient traditions of the French Troubadours, traditional Japanese Danmono-Ryu and poetry, the drummers
of West Africa and the Middle East, Appalachian hill songs, the beauty of Lightin' Hopkins, Atahualpa
Yupanqui, Mercedes Sosa, Andres Segovia, and Odetta, strong coffee, and late night conversations with
friends. Stephen resides in the Sierra foothills where he grew up. Check out his music at
http://stephenholland.info/MusicPhotos.html.
SATURDAY EVENING – MOUNTAIN FIRE
This group of musicians is super versatile, equally
comfortable with traditional bluegrass, original tunes,
and honky-tonk harmonies. Their music puts a smile
on the face of all who hear them play. Mountain
Fire’s message is a simple one — get the dogs to bark
and howl!! They are willing to play well into the
evening, as long as there are folks to listen.

COME TO CLAIR TAPPAAN TO LEARN
DAVID SCOTT
President
Sierra Club
David Scott of Ohio was elected President of the Sierra Club's Board of Directors in 2013. Scott is a life-time
member of the Sierra Club and a longtime environmental activist who most recently served as Sierra Club VicePresident. "I’m proud to serve the Sierra Club's volunteer leaders, members, supporters and staff as we continue
our fight for clean energy solutions and a better future," said Scott upon taking up his position as President. "The
Sierra Club is committed to protecting our health, climate and environment, and I look forward to helping build
on the progress we have made to secure climate solutions.” Scott has worked closely with volunteer leaders and
other staff members to expand the organization's influence and to educate and enlist humanity to protect and
restore the quality of the natural and human environment.
On Saturday evening, August 16 at 7:30, David is going to talk about the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.
The Wilderness Act was signed into law on September 3, 1964, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This historic
bill established the National Wilderness Preservation System and set aside an initial 9.1 million acres of
wildlands for the use and benefit of the American people. Now, 50 years later and as a result of America's
support for wilderness, Congress has added over 100 million acres to this unique land preservation system.
JOHN MUIR – 1879 - 1914
John Muir died 100 years ago this year. But he can be seen at Clair Tappaan
during the August fundraiser in the form of Don Baldwin. Growing up in the
shadow of Yosemite National Park, Don’s deep affinity with the Sierra led him to
create a dramatic, first-person portrayal of the famous naturalist. He will be
present around the campfire Friday evening, to share s’mores and brandy and
talk about his beloved Sierra. At 7:30 on Friday, Don will also be showing his
amazing panoramic slide programs of Yosemite and the High Sierras.

COME TO CLAIR TAPPAAN TO CELEBRATE ART
Nevada City artist Susan Barry leads Artist Retreats from Clair
Tappaan every year. Artists come together to learn and exchange ideas
and techniques with other outdoor painters. The artists are asked to
donate a painting of the lodge or the surrounding area that we auction
off at our August Fundraisers. Susan mats and frames the art for our
Art Auction; all proceeds go to the Clair Tappaan Lodge fund in the
Sierra Club Foundation to support environmental education. Some
examples from previous years are shown below. Susan also has art
workshops at the Fundraiser all day Saturday.
