FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST
Mark's Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors
and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked
powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his
origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark's passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus' two-fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus' return to his native place, and further points out that he is in
the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus
received the least. In the day of the Gospel's writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson
to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of
Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are
Jesus' followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as
signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he?
Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence?

Our parish Faith Formation Program will
begin on Tuesday, 9/8/2015, and end on May
25th, 2016. Catechists (teachers) are needed
for various grades on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If God has been calling your name and
you are not sure what to do and you can commit to the 32 week program of instructing our
parish children in the Catholic faith, then WE
HAVE A PLACE JUST FOR YOU!

be done through the Diocese and a Protecting

When natural disasters occur around the world, like the recent
earthquake in Nepal, the Catholic Church is quick to respond with food,
shelter and other humanitarian supplies. Through the efforts of Catholic
Relief Services (CRS), the official international humanitarian agency of the
Catholic Church, we are able to quickly assist those most in need.
The CRS Collection, taken annually in July, funds six Catholic
agencies that serve men, women and children of every ethnic and religious
affiliation around the world. CRS helps us to see Christ in every person and
to serve them out of love for Christ. Whether combating human trafficking,
educating poor children, assisting with refugees fleeing civil conflict or constructing wells for drinking water, CRS seeks only to love and serve Christ.
Each time CRS is able to assist someone in need, you are there
because of your prayerful and financial support. Thank you for the many
ways you have served Christ around the world through your generous support of Catholic Relief Services. Next weekend, on July 11 and 12, our parishes will conduct a special collection for Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
Your contribution will assist CRS in its continued work in Nepal as well as

Understanding Grief
We live counting on the people closest to us – to love us, to help us feel safe, and to ensure we retain a
continuing sense of purpose and meaning in our lives. We cherish the people, places, activities and
belongings that bring us pleasure; we expect them to continue to be a part of our lives. When we experience a separation from a loved one, or a change in our familiar routines, or we lose something precious to us, our personal wellbeing is disrupted and we react. Grief is our personal reactions to loss or separation.
Most of us have had experiences with loss of one kind or another. We’ve lost
friends; beloved pets have died; treasured belongings have gone missing. We
faced losses due to life changes such as a child leaving home, divorce or relocation. We somehow got through the hurt of all these losses – maybe without even
noticing how we managed.
The death of a loved one may affect us as nothing has before. But, however deeply we are affected, we can live beyond the loss. We may in time discover we still
can find joy and live well. Grief is varied and unpredictable - No two people
grieve the same. Our grief reactions also may vary in duration. Grief is a process
– This process unfolds over time. The separation from a loved one can have an impact on every dimension of our
being. It takes time to recognize the effect of the physical loss and to make the practical adaptations to our life.
Grief progresses – from a sense of “unreality” about the loss and physical separation to slowly facing the reality, and
then adaptation of the loss. Grief has a purpose – it allows us to suffer, endure and then heal from the effects of being
physically separated from someone precious to us. It allows us to survive the separation, adjust to the changes daily
life now requires, and to engage again in life toward a future filled with memories that sustain us or give us joy. We
can find new energy and renewed purpose in our lives. When we sense renewal happening, we know grief has accomplished its important work in us.
