The Cliff Communiqué April 2015, Issue 42 Notes from the Chair It is a privilege once more for me to serve as Chairman of Cliff Villages U3A. It is not an onerous task by any means especially with the experienced and talented committee that we have. I will take this opportunity to thank June Elliott for her year in the post. It wasn’t the best time for her with the interruptions to meetings due to the Memorial Hall renovations and the operations she had done, but nonetheless she battled on with her own gentle humour and good nature. Upcoming Events 2015 10/4 Kevin James “Safety in your Home” 08/5 Dr John Sutton, to be confirmed 12/6 10/7 14/8 Jasmit Phull “Arranged Marriages” Karen Crow “Lincoln The biggest advantage to being in the position of Chairman is getting to know what’s going on, as you become the conduit for information from many different sources apart from U3A. Unfortunately this information only reaches members who attend the monthly meetings, so if you are one of those people who think that the monthly meetings are not for you, then give it a go; we would love to see you. Those of you who were at the March meeting had the pleasant surprise of finding on arrival that the usual 50p subscription had been waived for the year. We are in the fortunate position of having a healthy bank balance thanks to our Treasurer, so we are now able to give a little back to all members via the monthly meeting. So yet another good reason for coming! Our 2015 programme is as exciting as ever so do make the most of what is on offer. And finally many thanks to all who organised and supported the auction which followed the AGM, raising in excess of £180 for the Air Ambulance funds. Town Crier” Best wishes Sonja Marshall “Trash or Treasure” Mick Rampton Looking back… As your former Chairman I would like to say a big thank you to all for the support I received during my year in office. It was always a pleasure to see your smiling faces when I opened the meeting, gave out notices and introduced the speaker. As I said at the AGM, we have to say a big thank you to Mary Cook, our speaker finder, for compiling such an interesting programme. Personally I’m looking forward to our June meeting this year; I won’t say more, but I know that it’s going to be very interesting… June Elliott News from our Monthly Interest Groups Poetry Group We meet on the second Monday in the month and our main aim is to look at the works of a chosen poet, always in an atmosphere of learning and reminiscing, with lots of laughter thrown in as well. At our February meeting Barbara Varlow organised a poetry quiz; there were no prizes, but Daphne Adam came first. I won’t mention who came last as it would be embarrassing, and no it wasn’t me! It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and we all learnt something new. June Elliott 01522 522778 [email protected] Church Visits We have a full programme of visits organised, with some big churches and some small, and one or two surprises as well, but I hope that all will be of interest. We start on 16th April at Woodhall Spa and through the following months we will meander across the Lincoln Diocese. We start at 10.00am and are finished, fed and watered by lunchtime. You are very welcome and all I ask is that you let me know in advance. Bob Alder 01522 810093 [email protected] Games Group We have now finished our latest session and recommence in October, meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 2.00pm in Harmston Memorial Hall. This has proved to be a very popular group over the winter months; not at all serious, we have a good laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Hope to see some new faces in October, so contact us for further information. Yvonne and Kenny Moir 01522 720770 [email protected] Industrial Heritage 2015 meetings on the third Friday of every month at the Redwood Drive Community Centre, Brant Road have been very well attended. We meet at 10.00am for a 10.30am start. As the years go by it is becoming increasingly difficult to find local venues to visit and it is not always possible to keep to the third Friday of the month. We are a large group and when numbers are restricted, the policy has been to give priority according to attendance at our group meetings over the previous winter months. The idea was to use the new bridge to access the part of the reserve which has been closed during the bridge’s construction, but unfortunately the opening had been delayed again. It is a substantial structure with easy access for all, including the wardens’ vehicles. All the material used in landscaping the area around the bridge has come from within the reserve so that no alien weeds invade. In addition the tree planting will create a habitat that will encourage nightingales to the site. Worth waiting for we hope? In spite of our disappointment at the delay in the bridge’s opening, we had an excellent walk around the different lakes, about five miles in all and finally moved on to a well-earned lunch at the Harvester.
