REGULATIONS:
1. ALL ENTRIES ARE SUBJECT TO THE BY-LAW
REGULATIONS OF THE SOCIETY.
2. Delivery and collection of exhibits:
Delivery: Exhibits to be delivered to the Showground’s
on Tuesday, 24th October between 8 am and 12
noon.
Collection: All exhibits will be available for collection
on Monday, 30th October between 8 am and 10.30
am only. The Society will not accept any responsibility
for exhibits not collected before that time.
3. NO LATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED.
4. All knitting must be in wool or wool blend. No cotton
allowed.

Regulations:
1. Each article must be made from Pure Wool / Wool
Blend of any ply and must have attached label
from wool used or label or receipt from Woollen
Mill.
2. Any exhibitor may represent only one Society at
Group Level and one Group at State Level.
3. An article having won at a Show will compete at a
Group Final; the winning article will then compete
at the next Royal Melbourne Show (2007)
4. The Melbourne Group 14 winner of the current
Show will compete as a finalist in the following
State Final at the Royal Melbourne Show.
5. Any article having won a State Final, is no longer
eligible to compete in the competition.
6. Each article entered must be the bona fide work
of the exhibitor.
7. If, for any reason, a winner is unable to compete
at a Group or State Final Level, then the second
placegetter is eligible to compete.
8. A person will not be permitted to win at more than
one Show within the State in any one Show year.
Persons not adhering to this rule will be required
to forfeit/refund prize money.
9. All work to have been completed within the last
twelve (12) months.

1. The garment or article fulfils the criteria of the class in regard
to description and yarn.
2. The overall appearance is attractive and appropriate.
3. Design and stitch are appropriate to yarn and intended use.
4. The garment or article is wearable, i.e. the armhole and/or
neck openings are neither too small nor too large, back neck
openings are made if necessary for babies and toddlers.
5. The tension is appropriate to yarn and design, i.e. soft for baby
wear, firm for work garments and socks.
6. Color use and color combinations are appropriate for either
traditional or contemporary styles.
7. Knitting technique is competent, i.e. even tension; no holes or
loose stitches in intarsia; no long strands in Fair Isle; the same
number of stitches for bands or trims are picked up on either
side of a garment/article; no holes showing at base of
neckbands where stitches have been picked up; cast-on and
cast-off are elastic and appropriate to garment. The use of
invisible cast-on and cast-off is preferable for rib welts and
bands.
8. Seams are appropriate to garment type and yarn, should be
inconspicuous for outside and not bulky.
• Flat seams are preferred for baby wear
• Mattress stitch or back stitch is used for vertical seams
• Horizontal seams such as shoulder seams are joined
either with back stitch (matching stitches) or the two
pieces case off together. The short row technique is
preferred for shaping shoulders
• The same yarn is used for sewing-up as for knitting; the
yarn being split if a heavy yarn has been used. Stripes or
matching blocks of color are sewn with the same color as
the knitting. It is impossible to sew the knitting yarn; the
matching plain yarn is used.
9. Button and buttonhole bands are either knitted on or neatly
sewn to the garment; length of bands is calculated correctly so
as to avoid sagging.
10. Button and buttonhole spacing are appropriate to the garment.
Buttons are sewn on with the knitting yarn.
11. Buttonholes are neat and of the appropriate size.
12. No restriction is placed on button type unless this is stated in
the criteria for class.
13. Horizontal stripes and/or patterns match exactly at seams and
each side of front bands on cardigans or jackets; vertical
stripes and/or patterns match on the shoulders.
14. Patterns are centered properly both vertically and horizontally.
15. Yarn is not joined in the middle of the row except in circular
knitting, in which case it is sewn in horizontally as neatly as
possible, or spliced.
16. Row count and seams, when sewn, match stitch to stitch in
general match ribbed welts and bands and lengths.
17. Double bands are not twisted and when sewn down matched
stitch to stitch.
18. Edges may be finished with a narrow crochet edge such as
crab stitch.
19. In lace knitting, a straight cast-on/cast-off is not usually
appropriate. For cotton lace, the usual finish is a looped
crochet chain and for Shetland lace, a knitted edging is used
either to commence or finish work
20. Fine knitting and lace are knitted in appropriate yarn and
needles for the style of work. Fine knitting does not
necessarily mean knitting with fine needles
