Fourth Annual
Pediatric Emergency and Critical Care
Topics in Pediatric Emergency and
Critical Care Medicine
Current advances in pediatric care make it essential for physicians,
nurses, allied health professionals and emergency personnel to
remain current in the most up-to-date emergency and critical care
management for these fragile patients.
Desired outcomes
This one-day conference is designed to provide health care personnel
with the latest information on pediatric emergency and critical care.
Participants will gain practical knowledge from expert providers
in the care of acutely ill and injured children. The fourth yearly
conference will feature talks related to the following topic areas:
1. Review the history of the patient safety movement as it relates to
pediatric care.
2. Discuss findings of the Children’s Safety Initiative, a study of
out-of-hospital pediatric safety events.
• ED and critical care bronchiolitis treatment
3. Explore opportunities to improve pediatric patient safety across
the spectrum of medical care.
• Neonatal case-based scenarios that cover home birth gone awry,
infection, inborn errors of metabolism and congenital heart disease
4. Develop a rational framework to address fear, pain and
movement in children undergoing outpatient procedures.
• Seamless transition from the rural facility to pediatric critical care
— initiation of pediatric transport
5. Review new developments and opportunities in pediatric
procedural sedation.
• Child abuse cases
6. Review the basics of bronchiolitis; discuss the most recent
evidence-based recommendations for bronchiolitis management
through the continuum — ED to PICU.
• Infectious disease management
• Pediatric patient safety
• Pain management and sedation in children
7. Increase awareness and familiarize the audience with the range
of child abuse conditions that present to the office or ED setting.
Hands-on training
8. Review the most common cases referred to a pediatric infectious
diseases specialist.
This year we are excited to again offer practical skills stations for
hands-on training. Skills station offerings will include:
• Defibrillators
• UVC line placement
• Pediatric PIV line placement adjuncts
• Point-of-care ultrasound use
• Emergency transtracheal jet ventilation
• Newborn resuscitation/T-piece resuscitator
9. Actively participate in a productive discussion that focuses on
the early activation of pediatric transport.
10. Increase knowledge of evidence-based evaluation and
management of common newborn emergencies.
Target audience
Emergency physicians, pediatricians, family practice physicians,
pediatric intensivists, nurses and pediatric allied health professionals,
physician assistants and EMT/EMT-P personnel
• Pre-procedure preparation
