Symposium Description
This symposium is designed for ophthalmologists. We invite technicians, nurses
and allied health professionals involved in the evaluation and management of
general ophthalmic diseases to also attend this symposium. Reports on therapies,
new procedures and technologies developed in the field of ophthalmology,
and a desire to maintain ethical standards for physicians and other health care
professionals are contributing factors used in selecting topics for this symposium.
The overall goal is to improve the quality of care provided to the patient
population served by the attendees. This symposium will deal with common
cases and solutions presented via didactic lectures and panel discussions.
Symposium Objectives
Upon completion of this symposium, the participants should be able to:
• Discuss the indications, contraindications, and efficacy of keratoplasty surgery in the pediatric patient and the use of keratoprosthesis in adult and pediatric patients.
• Describe how glaucoma medications lower IOP, how to best initiate therapy and whether generic drugs are as good as branded medications.
• Review the clinical features, causative organisms, treatment outcomes and current management options of endophthalmitis occurring after cataract surgery.
• Review the various components used to calculate IOL power and the potential sources
of error.
• Describe the clinical features, treatment options and visual acuity outcomes in the treatment of diabetic macular edema.
• Improve the understanding of the clinical evaluation and surgical techniques available to address astigmatism with IOLs in cataract surgery.
• Review the various causes of double vision after routine cataract surgery and how to prevent and treat them.
• Review the best methodology to select test object size and area of field to be tested.
• Review how to determine visual field progression.
• Describe strategies for the management of unhappy patients after premium IOL
cataract surgery.
• Discuss angle closure glaucoma and its treatment.
• Explain how to use canal-based MIGS procedures in your practice.
• Identify the treatment options, new techniques and visual acuity outcomes in retinal detachment surgery.
• Review common methods to prevent and manage complications of cataract surgery and obtain basic information on iPhone ophthalmic photography.
• Discuss the moral, ethical and humanistic side of treating a patient with Ebola.
• Describe the impact that the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States had on the facility and the lessons that were learned.
