Indiana State University Diversity Task Force Diversity/Inclusion Climate Study Monthly Report March 1, 2015-March 31, 2015 Prepared by Diversity/Inclusion Consultant Dr. Gerda Govine Diversity Consultant Services provided March 1-31, 2015 On-campus visit March 1, 2015-March 7, 2015 1. Interviewed 20 individuals; facilitated two student focus groups, with seven students; facilitated one faculty focus group with three members and attended two student meetings on campus with 23 students. 1st Week March 2, 2015 – (a) four interviews: one administrator, two faculty; one staff member and (b) one Student Advisory Council dinner meeting. March 3, 2015 – (a) three interviews: three community representatives; and (b) Hispanic Student Association meeting. March 4, 2015 – (a) six interviews: one administrator, two staff, one student and two community representatives and (b) Newcomers group fashion show. March 5, 2015 – (a) two community breakfast conversations; (2) two interviews: two community representatives; (3) one student focus group and (4) one faculty focus group. March 6, 2015 – (a) Diversity Task Force Meeting; (b) five interviews: one faculty and four students; and (c) one student focus group. 2. Interviewed community representatives, for example Dennis Tanoos, Superintendent, Vigo County School Corporation; Vigo County Superior Court Judge Lucky Reddy, Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt, Chief of Police John Plasse, Terre Haute Police Department; and diverse administrators, faculty, staff and student populations. 2nd & 3rd Week March 10-11, 2015 & March 12-17, 2015 – Best Practices site visit to San Diego State University March 10-11, 2015. Met with Dr. Aaron Bruce, Chief Diversity Officer and Yousef Abraham, Assistant Program Coordinator, Center for Intercultural Relations. SDSU in a Hispanic Serving Institution. Focus on assessing and converting quantitative data into pie charts and bar graphs and organizing and designing qualitative data structure. 3rd Week March 18-23 Focus on assessing and converting quantitative data into pie charts and bar graphs and Gerda Govine -2- March 31, 2015 organizing and designing qualitative data structure. 4th Week March 25, 2015 - Site visit to meet with Dr. Sue Varela, Associate Vice President, Human Resource Management and Mariel S. Mulet, Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, California State University Los Angeles is confirmed for Friday, April 3, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Cal State is a Hispanic Serving Institution. March 26-28, 2015 – Attended Association of American Colleges and Universities “Diversity, Learning, and Student Success: Assessing and Advancing Inclusive Excellence,” San Diego, CA. The Program focused on four major thematic areas of campus work and organizational change. (1) Diversity and Inclusive Excellence as an Institutional Value System; (2) Equity and High-Quality Learning for All Students; (3) High-Impact Practices and Digital Innovations and (4) Developing and Supporting Educators for Inclusive Excellence, Leadership, and Change. Engaged in conversations with two attendees during breakfast, McCartney N. Andrews, Administrative Assistant III and Allie B. Michael, Coordinator of Learning Opportunities, Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee. Spoke with two presenters ; Kyle Reyes, Special Assistant to the President for Inclusion and Assistant Professor, School of Education, Utah Valley University, and Edith Cho, Student producer, Notre Dame. March 31, 2015 – Preparation of March 2015 monthly report and Invoice. Organizing, designing qualitative data structure and text. 3. Drafting Diversity, Inclusion Climate Study Report of interviews, focus groups, meal conversations, observations & interactions at events and meetings on campus and in the community. Best practice on-site interviews by three Diversity Task Force members Dean Jack Turman, Jr., Washington University; Dean Lynn Maurer and General Counsel Katie Butwin, Western Michigan University, and Consultant at San Diego State University and California State University Los Angeles (4/3/2015). Additional sources include research materials; on-campus diversity workshop, and information gleaned from numerous presentations and workshops at the Association of American Colleges and Universities, Diversity, Learning, and Student Success Conference attended by three Diversity Task Force members: Dean Lynn Maurer, Dean Brien Smith, General Counsel Katie Butwin; Consultant and two faculty members from the Bayh College of Education. The Final report with recommendations will be delivered by Consultant to President Bradley on April 30, 2015. 4.
