INFRASTRUCTURE MINING & METALS NUCLEAR, SECURITY & ENVIRONMENTAL OIL, GAS & CHEMICALS Bechtel Nuclear We have designed and/or built more than half of the nuclear power plants in the United States Since the earliest commercial nuclear reactors a halfcentury ago, Bechtel has played a pivotal role in every phase of the industry’s development. Bechtel has completed more than 74,000 megawatts of new nuclear generation capacity. Nuclear Industry’s Most Experienced Contractor Bechtel is a leading integrating contractor for large, complex projects focused on nuclear power, nuclear security, and nuclear waste. Since construction of the Experimental Breeder Reactor in 1949, Bechtel has played a significant role in nuclear science and technology. We have designed and built a wide variety of nuclear facilities and tackled some of the world’s most challenging nuclear waste problems. Following the nation’s worst nuclear accident, we decontaminated the site at Three Mile Island, and today, we are managing the shelter stabilization and New Safe Confinement over the damaged nuclear reactor at Chornobyl. We are also designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest and most technically sophisticated radioactive waste treatment plant at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site in Washington state. Bechtel has performed engineering and/or construction services for 88 of the 104 operating U.S. nuclear power plants; was the architect, engineer, and/or constructor on 15 international units in five countries; and has been responsible at numerous DOE facilities for large-scale handling, treatment, and storage of high-level, low-level, and mixed radioactive wastes. We have designed facilities for processing plutonium, uranium, and tritium and converting plutonium to oxide and feed for mixed-oxide fuel fabrication plants. Our nuclear expertise includes: Nuclear safety and criticality, safeguards and security, and material control and accountability systems Reliability, maintainability, and operability tradeoff analyses Remote handling and transportation of nuclear material Gloveboxes and hardened nuclear storage vaults Radiation protection, including ALARA design features, such as radiation zoning and access controls Deterrent and intrusion detection systems Bechtel has engineered and built both large- and small capacity nuclear generation projects worldwide, including plants collectively generating more than 74,000 MW of nuclear power. Landmark nuclear plants we designed and built include the United States’ largest and one of the last commissioned in the U.S. Today, Bechtel is the only contractor preparing construction license applications for all new technologies being considered for new nuclear plants in the United States. Wide-Ranging Capabilities Bechtel teams have worked with DOE and its predecessor organizations, production sites, national laboratories, and other government and commercial customers on a wide variety of projects, including those highlighted below. Hanford Site We are leading a team designing, building, and commissioning a massive waste treatment plant (pictured above) for DOE at Hanford, site of the nation's first and most extensive nuclear defense production program. The goal of this first-of-a-kind project is to immobilize 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored in 177 underground tanks. In addition, we are part of the Hanford River Corridor Closure team responsible for cleaning up waste sites near the Columbia River, cleaning and demolishing contaminated facilities, and placing the remaining plutonium production reactors in safe interim storage. National Laboratories We are managing and operating the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, two DOE nuclear defense laboratories and national security facilities. These laboratories perform sensitive missions including ensuring the nuclear weapons in the aging U.S. stockpile are safe and effective, and are key to America’s scientific and national defense efforts. Savannah River Site Beginning with design and construction of the Defense Waste Processing Facility, the world's largest high-level vitrification plant, Bechtel has overseen hundreds of design, engineering, and construction projects, including nuclear facilities at the DOE Savannah River Site. We are currently part of the team responsible for closing the site’s liquid waste tanks. Chornobyl Shelter Stabilization and New Safe Confinement We are leading an international team to provide a radiologically and environmentally safe confinement for the damaged reactor at Chornobyl. The New Safe Confinement structure, to be one of the world’s largest moveable structures ever built, is intended to keep water out and dust in for 100 years. Unparalleled Expertise Bechtel has more than 2,200 nuclear professionals, which include approximately 150 internationally recognized technical specialists who have been published widely, and have participated in developing industry standards and guidelines.
