UTAH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Position Announcement Title: Work Location: Pay Rate: Closing Date: Anticipated Employment Dates: Crew Leader/Botanist and Wetlands Technician Utah Geological Survey, Salt Lake City, Utah $15-17/hr (Botanist), $14/hr (Technician) April 20, 2015 (April 13 for full consideration) Early June - end of September, possible extension depending on funding Position Description: The Utah Geological Surveys seeks to hire two employees for summer field work assessing condition in Utah wetlands. One technician will serve as the crew leader and must have experience with botany and use of dichotomous keys. The other technician will be trained to collect soil pit data. The position is based out of Salt Lake City and will require extended work days and occasional overnight stays at field sites. Work days will typically consist of four 10-hour days in a week, but other schedules may sometimes be required. The job may also entail occasional office work such as data entry, making site maps in ArcGIS, and processing and identifying plant specimens in the office or at herbaria. Qualifications: Completion of at least three years of education towards a bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, wetland science, botany, wildlife biology, or other related field Knowledge of data collection procedures and ability to collect data with attention to detail Ability to perform field duties outdoors in conditions that may include exposure to rugged terrain, hot or cold weather, and mosquitoes all while maintaining a strong commitment to team safety and a positive attitude Willingness and ability to work long hours and unusual schedules (up to 8 consecutive days); travel extensively during field season; camp or share rustic quarters; hike moderate distances through occasionally rough terrain.
