Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulfate, BaSO4. It is usually colorless or milky white, but can be almost any color, depending on the impurities trapped in the crystals during their formation. Barite is relatively soft, measuring 3-4.5. It is unusually heavy for a non-metallic mineral. The high density is responsible for its value in many applications. Barite is chemically inert and insoluble. Drilling mud weighting material - Oil & Natural Gas (BaSO4. 90% / Density: 4.1 – 4.4) Drilling mud is used in the drilling of many oil and gas wells. Because the clay in ordinary drilling mud has a specific gravity of only around 2.5. As a result, if relatively low-density mud is unable to counterbalance the upward pressure of oil and gas, a blowout may occur. It is therefore necessary to increase the density of drilling mud when the subsurface pressure is high. Adding barite powder to mud is an effective way of increasing density. Filler Industry - Paint, Rubber, Plastic and Paper Industry (BaSO4. 95-98% / Density: 4.1- 4.5) The addition of barium sulfate filler to paint can increase paint film thickness, strength, and durability. Lithopone pigment is used in the manufacture of white paint, and is considered superior to lead white and magnesia white in indoor paints. Barium sulfate used as a filler in the paint industry must have sufficient fineness and relatively high whiteness. The rubber and plastic industries also use barium sulfate as a filler, and it can improve the hardness, abrasion resistance, strength, stiffness, and anti-aging performance of rubber and plastic. Mineralizing Agent for Cement and Road Construction (BaSO4. 92-97% / Density: 3.8 - 4.2) A mineralizing agent consisting of mixed barite and fluorite can be used in cement to promote the formation of C3S. Activation of C3S yield significant benefits, improves clinker quality, increases the cements early strength by approximately 20%-25% and later strength by approximately 10%, and reduces clinker firing temperature from 1,450 C to 1,350 C. Radiation-shielding cement, mortar, and concrete - Pharmaceutical (BaSO4. 95-98% / Density: 3.8 – 4.4) Barites ability to absorb x-rays allows it to be used in barium cement, barite mortar, and barite concrete. These materials can be used instead of lead sheet to shield nuclear reactors and construct laboratory and hospital x-ray shielded buildings. The image cannot be displayed. There are different types of Bentonite, each named after the respective dominant element, such as potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and aluminium, (Al). Experts debate a number of nomenclatorial problems with the classification of bentonite clays. Sodium bentonite Sodium bentonite expands when wet, absorbing as much as several times its dry mass in water. Because of its excellent colloidal properties, it is often used in drilling mud for oil and gas wells and boreholes for geotechnical and environmental investigations Calcium bentonite Calcium bentonite is a useful adsorbent of ions in solution, as well as fats and oils. It is the main active ingredient of Fuller’s earth, probably one of the earliest industrial cleaning agents. Drilling mud Bentonite is used in drilling fluids to lubricate and cool the cutting tools, to remove cuttings, and to help prevent blowouts. Much of bentonite's usefulness in the drilling and geotechnical engineering industry comes from its unique rheological properties. Relatively small quantities of bentonite suspended in water form a viscous, shear thinning material. Binder Bentonite has been widely used as a foundry-sand bond in iron and steel foundries. Sodium bentonite is most commonly used for large castings that use dry molds, while calcium bentonite is more commonly used for smaller castings that use "green" or wet molds. Bentonite is also used as a binding agent in the manufacture of iron ore (taconite) pellets as used in the steelmaking industry. Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in color from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red. The iron itself is usually found in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4), hematit (Fe2O3), goethite (FeO(OH)), limonite (FeO(OH).n(H2O)) or siderite (FeCO3). Ores carrying very high quantities of hematite or magnetite (greater than ~60% iron) are known as "natural ore" or "direct shipping ore", meaning they can be fed directly into iron-making blast furnaces. Most reserves of such ore have now been depleted. Iron ore is the raw material used to make pig iron, which is one of the main raw materials to make steel. 98% of the mined iron ore is used to make steel. Indeed, it has been argued that iron ore is "more integral to the global economy than any other commodity, except perhaps oil". One of the most important uses of iron ore is steel production, accounting for the bulk of iron ore processed annually. Ironrich ores have a number of other uses, some of which are literally quite colorful; they are used in cosmetics, for example, and in the production of some paints, inks, and dyes. Manufacturers distinguish between high and low grade ores that contain different impurities mixed with the iron and determine the end uses of iron ore.
