La Plata County Register of Historic Places La Plata County Historic Preservation Review Commission Mission: To provide an application and review process for residents to receive Historic Landmark designation by the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners, to increase awareness of historic and cultural heritage as embodied in these designated historic landmarks, to provide educational opportunities to increase public appreciation of the County’s unique heritage, and to increase economic and financial benefits through heritage-tourism. The Pine River Cemetery has served the Pine River Valley since early settlement and is still in use to the present. The first burial is believed to be Susan Dunham in 1882, but there is no surviving marker. The land was donated by Walter Dunham to preserve her final resting place on a hill overlooking the Pine River. Many members of pioneer Pine River Valley families are buried in the Cemetery, including individuals from the McClure, Hood, and Hampton families. The first burial was Sefton Hampton in 1880. Today, burials occur but they are infrequent. Ten acres of land for the Cemetery were designated in the 1950s; it is cared for by the Ignacio, Allison, Oxford Cemetery District.
