Outerwear
This season one key piece in everyone’s wardrobe should be a signature coat. Outside of elementary school, a
good jacket isn’t something we add into our wardrobe
every year…until this season. Outerwear is making a big
statement in terms of color and detail.
Notable coats are in a bevy of fur trimmed, oversized,
and leather pieces. Choose your new coat wisely…it will
be the signature piece you will be remembered by!
Part of this trend includes hats. For this, I am particularly thrilled. I have always been a hat lover. If you’ve
ever traveled in Europe, you will notice everyone wearing hats. The trend has taken a LONG time to catch on
here in the states; I blame this on our obsession with un-mussed hair. Truth is, a smart cloche can take a very
plain look and instantly make it super stylish.
Fashionistas will don a fedora one day, a floppy knit the
next and baseball varieties casually on the weekends. Pair
hats with something unexpected. For example, a smart
wool dress or suit with a floppy knit hat; or simple jeans
and a t-shirt with an embellished fedora. When in doubt, go
for a beanie.
HOW TO WEAR: My suggestion is to definitely participate in
this trend. Why not treat yourself to a new coat this
season? A word on color: we all know what color looks
great on us…opt for that color coat and avoid the temptation to go with black.
Hats aren’t for everyone – to those that are saying “I am not a hat person” try a cloche first. This hat style is
easy to wear and super fashionable. The beanie can also be cute on many people, and can be less hair-styledamaging.

PRINTS and TEXTURE
This season prints go back to basic. For the past few years we’ve seen
highly patterned looks come off the runway. We’ve even seen unnatural
pairings like a floral worn with stripes. This season, we are heading back to
basics. Hounds tooth, plaid, pinstripe, leopard all make a bold entrance
into boutiques and malls.
Noteworthy tip: many of these prints have a distinct menswear feel. Try to
shy away from wearing these prints as structured office pieces, but rather
choose a menswear print with feminine details.
This pattern trend has a very
Americana feel – think Ralph
Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Burberry.
The IT pattern this season will be hounds
tooth. This pattern will be seen in many
color combinations.
The varietal color splash in pattern we will see this season is what I am the most excited
about. Animal prints in non-animalish colors, menswear prints in pink (maybe?), and typical
summer hues in screen printed dresses.
Leather is a biggy for 2013. Leather can have a harsh look. Wear your leather pieces in
small doses, and take care to pair them with softer pieces/hues. Style the leather pieces as
you would a good structured knit or wool piece.
pg. 5
Polka dots are still around, and look super cool in a contrast color next to the
neutral menswear feel of the season’s other prints (hounds tooth, for example).
Many prints will have a distinct screen print feel, with a high degree of repetition.
Mixing this season is about hard and soft pieces and
mixing pattern and texture (like in Spring/Summer).
HOW TO WEAR IT:
To balance this masculine feel to prints is a strong screen print feel to bold patterns. Look for this in
shirtdresses and blouses.
Mixing solid colors to create color blocked looks was seen on a lot on runways during fashion week. Try the
color blocked look with one unexpected color, like Koi or Vivacious (see colors).
Colored leather has a very youthful vibe. If your image goal is to take on a more sophisticated approach to your
image, then stick to brown or black.
Key leather pieces to add into your wardrobe this season are a leather biker jacket (always a good wardrobe
staple), leather jeans/jeggings or a skirt.

COLORS
Kermit might think it is not easy being green, but I think we’ve all come to love Emerald and all hues of green
this summer. If you’ve embraced and come to depend on those greenish hues in your wardrobe, fear not my
green loving friends, it’s back – or rather it’s here to stay!
Pantone said Emerald is THE color for 2013, and the
fashion world has taken that declaration and run
with it. The difference between the spring/summer
greens and the fall/winter greens is simply in
saturation. The cold weather greens will be – well,
more green. Darker warmer tones rule fashion this
season.
Listen up! Grey is the new black! Let’s be honest, grey has
been the new black for a few seasons now. Grey paired with
hot green hues is a fresh take on an old favorite combo.
Another key look this summer was monochromatic white…we
are seeing that again only done in a cold weather way with
winter white.
pg. 7
Red is a popular hue this season as well (we are calling this color Samba). The
monochromatic feel in all red is very chic.
Blue is an important color this season, and honestly – this season’s blue looks good
on everyone! Bright cobalt blue that Pantone has named Mykonos Blue.
HOW TO WEAR IT:
First, know what colors look good on
you. This season many of the hues have distinct undertones that may not be the best on everyone. The blue
trend we’ve seen on the runway is one that everyone can run with. The blue-greens are also hues that will be
good on all skin tones. If you are one to love monochromatic dressing, and are a black-addict – try moving to
deep lichen green as a neutral. This grey-based dark green can have more of a black look to it, and will be a
good transition for those trying to add some color into their wardrobes.

CUTS and SHAPES
Peplum made an appearance on the covers of fashion magazines a few seasons
ago, and fashion lovers everywhere took a real liking to it. Peplum is a silhouette
flattering look that is great to define a waist, disguise mid-section fluff, and if
worn right can even add some curves in all the right places.
You can fake this cut with jackets and sweaters by adding a belt. They key to
pulling off the belted coat/sweater look is to be sure things are bunching in the
right place (not at the side, but rather gathered at the back). This is a very
popular look this season.
Fall/winter keeps the peplum look, specifically in
sweaters and jackets. The peplum dress/top is still
around, but not as prominent as I saw in
Spring/summer.
The 80’s are back with big rounded shoulders as a silhouette this
season. Those with an “A” body shape will especially love what
shoulder pads will do for your shape. The rounded shoulders also take
a style cue with dropped shoulders (dolman sleeves) which can be a
flattering look for the “V” shape ladies. Don’t know what your body
shape is? Click HERE
The slouchy pant is another silhouette that harkens back to the 80’s –
and is here in 2013. Most of the slouchy pants have a peg-leg look, which can be
challenging to wear for some. This look has a very dramatic, high fashion feel.
The juxtaposition between body conscious pieces and oversized pieces bring us leggings
with oversized sweaters, palazzo pants with slim jackets, short skirts with oversized
sweaters, and slouchy pegged pants and turtlenecks.
One of the big pairings this season will be skirts and
sweaters.
pg. 9
HOW TO WEAR IT:
Everyone can grab on to the peplum trend this season except those that are an “A” shape. If you are petite and
have a classic “A” shape, use caution before embracing this silhouette. This look does bring attention to the
small of your waist, but can also draw the eye to ones hips. Be sure the fluff of the peplum falls to about your
fingertips to avoid adding unnecessary bulk at your hip (that is, unless you need to add some curves there!).
The skirt and sweater trend is definitely one everyone needs to know and love. It is a look that can be very uptown sophisticated and Friday-night fun. The key is in the details (accessories). Proportion is key in this look;
remember too much fabric can translate (visually) to added weight. If you want to try the oversize sweater /
skirt look, be sure to wear a high heel for additional proportion help.
pg. 10
DENIM
Printed denim is still around for fall; try it in the season’s hot color
- emerald. A street-smart look is to buy your skinnies in a size
bigger to create a slouchy look.
Skinnies are the ‘it’ silhouette in denim; thankfully this has been
the ‘it’ look for several seasons, so pull out your favorite skinnies /
jeggings from last winter and get some more use out of them. The
new way to use this wardrobe
staple is to ground them with a
short (ankle) boot.
HOW TO WEAR IT:
If you aren’t the skinny jean type, then I want to challenge you to try a jean
that has a slim thigh, with a slight flare at the knee. This style is very
flattering especially when done in a dark (no distressing) wash.
I am, however, a believer that just about anyone can wear skinny jeans (and
jeggings / leggings) if done right. Most of us want a sophisticated look with
our style, and the skinny jean can do that. How? With the right footwear! A
cool stacked heel or an ankle boot (try a sandal-boot!).

TREND INSPIRATIONS
There is a military feel as inspiration this season from many
designers…as we see about every season. This time around, it is in
color (army green, military browns/khaki), and in structure. Even the
peplum (belted) silhouette comes from a military influence. The
military look is seen in hardware (strong and bold), and especially in
footwear.
Luxe up the trend with soft details like frills, lace, peplum or fur.
Another inspiration in trends is folk. As much of a contrast as this is
to the military inspiration with clean lines and simplicity in pattern,
there is a distinct folk feeling from some design houses. These
pieces are done in loose silhouettes with a hand-made (or handdetailed) feel. Embellishments like embroidery, ribbon, sewn on
lace all offer this folk vibe.
HOW TO WEAR IT:
Military – I will be you have some pieces in your wardrobe with this feel right now.
As I said, the military influence has been a part of fashion for a long time. If you
have warm coloring, bring on the army greens! This will be a stunning palate for
you. If you are not feeling the love for the army green hue, then bring on some
military feel with your footwear. Lug sole, bold hardware even the lace-up trend in
stilettos come from this influence.

As for folk, this is a definite style personality preference. If your style is feminine and artistic

KEY PIECES
Things to embrace, pull out of the back of the closet or add into your wardrobe this season are:
 Turtlenecks – I have always loved LOVED the
skinny pant / turtle neck look (a-la Audrey Hepburn in
Breakfast at Tiffany look). This classic pairing is spoton this season, especially as a layer to a bold
statement outerwear jacket. Style the turtleneck as
you would a plain t-shirt. Beware of the chunkiness of
the turtle if you don’t have a long neckline. Seek out a
cotton turtleneck, a thin fabric that you can layer or
wear alone. A few years ago Target offered some uber
soft turtles that I loved; let’s hope they bring those
back this season.
 Slouchy Pants – remember harem pants? The idea of the genie pant has a fresh new take this season.
Most look peg legged, which can be hard to wear. Find some that are slouchy and
lose fitting, but with a wider ankle opening. Fake the silhouette by rolling up the
cuffs.

pg. 13
Below the knee pencil skirts - This look has a very modern, Mad Men feel and is very chic when paired with
a smart jacket and pointed toe stiletto. Try this skirt in a
menswear print like hounds tooth.
 Leather – a leather motorcycle jacket, leather jeans or
leather leggings. Trust me, you will wear these pieces and
you will be the fashion envy of your friends.

A beanie. Choose one in your signature color and wear with a monochromatic outfit. If you need to, bobby
pin the beanie in just the right place so it doesn’t move around.
 Fisherman knit sweaters – bulky neutral sweaters will
be the perfect thing to cozy up with once the weather cools
down. This style sweater paired with leather is hot. We are
going to see chunky knit sweaters worn with everything
from skirts to harem pants.
pg. 14
SHOES
In boots the runaway look this season is in over the knee
boots. ALERT: if you are petite, you may want to skip this
trend.
To contrast the over the knee boot, ankle boots will also be
a wardrobe staple this season. Wear with skirts and
leggings.
Transitionally, the boot/sandal hybrid will be making a bold statement in early
autumn. Once the weather gets too cold to show your toes, just pull on a tight
with this statement look.
The pointed toe is key this season in footwear. Out with those rounded toed
pumps, and in with the leg elongating pointed toe stiletto. Many heels have a
1940’s feel.
The lug sole on everything will be a big trend as the
weather gets cold. Along this same feel we will see heavy heeled shoes as well.
pg. 15
HANDBAGS
Purses with structure are the trend this season. By structure, I mean a definite
shape. Styles include everything from camera bags to clutches and the basic
satchel.
Handbags also take a cue
from wardrobe pieces
with a lean toward
texture. Pattern, fur,
leather, strong hardware
– all things we saw on the
runway. They most
important thing this
season seems to be top handles. All bags with handles
are top handles.
Many bags this season are done in pure black and white (of course, with details or texture). If you aren’t sure
about the menswear trend with pattern, consider a lady-like satchel in a black and white hounds tooth.
The new clutch is called the pouch or portfolio. This bag looks like
an oversized envelope. The trend in this piece is to use as a
statement accessory to your monochromatic outfits. This pouch is
oversized, not the small clutch as we’ve seen in years past.
pg. 16
ACCESSORIES
Textured tights are back this season in a variety of options. Polka dots, sparkle, pinstripe, hounds tooth…you
name it and you will see it. Remember that donning a highly textured tight with your short skirts will bring a lot
of attention to your legs. Be sure you want that attention on your gams…cuz you are gonna get it!
Socks with sandals – I wasn’t kidding when I started talking about this look a year ago, and I’m still not kidding.
This trend has it place on campus or as part of urban street fashion but perhaps not in the office (unless, of
course, you are the editor of a fashion magazine).
In jewelry sterling takes center stage, as summer’s gold take a back seat. Necklaces
are being worn layered with simple pendants. A Lucite feel continues into fall with
some jewelry pieces donning crystal-like stones. The crystals aren’t necessarily clear /
white, but also in the popular hues of the season.
Necklaces also take a street feel in bold charm pieces. The noteworthy
components of these pieces are metal that looks like barbed wire, bike chain
or some other utilitarian metal.
Pearls are back again this fall, and are being worn in a very simple lady like way.
pg. 17
MAKEUP
A hot look on the runway this season is the cat eye. The cat eye is
marked by strong eyeliner. The hot way to capture this look is
with color. Successful makeup artist tell me the way to wear this
trend is to keep everything else on your face very simple. In
other words, no bright blush, no vibrant lips. The statement is
your eye – keep it that way.
Also noteworthy on eyes, is orange shadow. If you are a ‘warm’ this is a gun trend to try.
Orange can be a hard color to pull off on eyes; makeup artists tell me to try a brown with
subtle orange flecks.
Red and wine lips are all the
rage again this fall/winter. The
secret to keeping the red on
your lips (and not on your chin
or teeth) is to first line your
lips with a good lip liner, apply
the lipstick and then use
powder to set the lipstick,
then reapply the lipstick again.
I promise it works!
