Harvard College Financial Aid Office 86 Brattle Street Cambridge MA 02138 (p) 617.495.1581 / (f) 617.496.0256 (e) [email protected] Harvard College Study Abroad Supplement 2015-2016 Deadlines: May 1 (fall study) and October 30 (spring study) Submit this form to the Griffin Financial Aid Office by May 1st (fall or full year study) or October 30th (spring study). If you are receiving financial aid and are approved for academic credit for study abroad, your aid should be available to be applied toward your program costs. Please note that you must also submit a complete 2015-2016 Upper Class Financial Aid Application by May 1, 2015. If a program is more than a Harvard semester, we can provide additional grant up to $5,000 more. Normally, if a budget is more than $5,000 above your Harvard standard budget, the costs in excess of that $5,000 threshold will not be eligible for additional scholarship funding. A subsidized loan will usually be available to meet these additional expenses. General Information Meeting Your Term-Time Job Expectation Optional: Your aid package normally includes a termtime job expectation. If you would prefer a subsidized loan to meet the job expectation while you are abroad, please indicate below: accept term-time job loan for study abroad Your name __________________________ Class ____________________ Email ____________________________________________________________ Semester(s) of study: Fall Spring Both Study Abroad Program Information All study abroad programs must be approved for academic credit by the Office of International Education (OIE) in advance for you to be eligible for financial aid. As a matter of policy, all expenses should be education-related, and attached documentation of all costs is required. Please attach copies of your program description showing anticipated costs. Normally, we will construct your budget from the official program costs, a standard travel allowance for the host country (unless otherwise documented), and a standard personal expense/book allowance. For programs that do not include living expenses, please provide estimates and detailed documentation. Keep in mind that living arrangements should be similar to standard college options (dormitories, shared apartments, etc.). We generally expect the personal expense/book allowance to be similar to the one here at Harvard (2014-2015 amount is $1,821 per semester). Once we approve your budget, we will subtract your normal parent contribution and student contribution from this budget. The remaining amount will be met with grant aid. That means if your budget is less than that of a Harvard semester, you may be receiving less grant but the costs to your family should be the same. Unexpected Expenses Loan Optional: You may take out up to $2,000 beyond the costs of your budget in Harvard loan funds to have with you while abroad in case of unexpected expenses. If you do not use these funds, you can return them after the program ends and there will be no interest. If you would like this emergency loan, please indicate below: accept unexpected expenses study abroad loan in the amount of $____________ Payments *Be sure to sign up for direct deposit through the Student Receivables Office (instructions are on their website)* Your financial aid credits will first be posted to your Harvard term bill to cover any necessary fees and outstanding balances.
